  • Qld gov rebate should still apply here ($6000). That is an indnae price with the rebate too. I think some other states have rebates too.

    • +2

So, should I buy interstate and drive it to Melbourne?

      • do you have a QLD address?

      • Probably needs to be registered in qld.

    • Can i use someones qld address to buy an ev

  • -5

if a car company can easily slash 10k from the price, does this not make you concerned about quality ?

    • +3

      No.

It's not a new lower cost product. It's an existing product with a price reduction.

      All cars have huge margins.

      • theres alot of tax involved, they dont actually have huge margins, most car markers make their money from spare parts / service

    • +16

Bags of chips go half price on sale regularly. Does that make you concerned about their quality?

      • Well said.

      • -1

your now comparing bag of chips to a new car? good one

    • just means they're milking consumers

      • Not to mention every day these cars sit unsold puts more and more pressure on the manufacturers to get them out the door. Even at a loss if need be to free up capital.

  • Phone is fine?

  • How do you take the offer and do test drive?
The send enquiry button doesn't seem to work.

  • +1

So the dumping has started - as predicted.

  • +1

Hopefully not a stupid question but is there a fair chance the warranty will outlast the battery?

    • +1

These things run Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are much longer lasting than the NCA and NMC batteries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_iron_phosphate_battery…) you find in longer range EVs (including the MG ZS EV LR model in this range). Also quite a bit less…fire inclined, something that's massively overblown anyway.

    • +1

The battery will last longer than the car. LFP batteries are not complex and less volatile than most. This battery is made by the manufacturer SAIC and has decent specs, cooling and battery management systems. It’s not a cheap setup at all.

It’s potential lifespan is well beyond the life of this car

  • +2

Think they are dumping stock ready for announcing the replacement model the MG S5

    • +2

      Runout sales are nothing new.

  • +1

Surely home battery prices are going to use these batteries and become a. cheap b. larger.

    • This is why EVs will never be worthless. These batteries are reusable in home setups. And the size is 3-5 times larger than the average large Aussie home even needs per day

  • These guys are just nuts. Why in the world would you ever price an EV this low??!!! It's literally begging for US style tariffs to be applied.

    • +2

the US is already tariffing anything chinese anyway, it's effectively an embargo at the ridiculous rates they put up.

australia is different, we have no domestic car industry to protect, which is good for us the consumers

      • Australia will eventually follow the US, so reducing prices like this is definately not a good look and simply asking for trouble. And we already have a semi car manufacturing industry back up converting left to right hand drive trucks.

        • +12

doubtful, as I said, we have no domestic industry to protect so it makes no economic sense, and there will be significant repercussions politically - think farmers that suffered during the last trade war. it's a political lose lose situation. the only possible way for that is being strongarmed by the US to do so due to geopolitics in event of something catastrophic like a regional armed conflict but this is very unlikely

    • +3

Countries only apply tariffs to protect home industries, something we haven't had in the automotive sector since 2020.

From a government perspective this would only serve to accelerate the adoption of EVs, so they're not going to stand in the way of that.

  • +1

Should be illegal to sell cars here without a spare wheel

    • +5

why? plenty of cars are without spare wheels nowadays. most people drive this car as a city get around, and half of them don't know how to change a wheel without calling Roadside assist

    • At the very least I would be happy if it was mandated to have a decent spot to place a spare wheel..

    • +2

When did you last change a wheel on a new car?

I’ve been driving for 30 years and had to change 3 wheels

      • I'd say that's about right. I've been driving my own car for 20 years in Melbourne and have had 2 punctures. How much petrol have I wasted carrying around a spare, and it wasn't even used when I had a puncture!

      • I've had 5 punctures on my car within the first 3 years of ownership.
        Have had no luck

  • +1

even if your resell value is 0 if you NL this car the yearly ownership cost after 10years would be sub 2k

    • +3

700,000kms. Battery is at 74% health.

      • Do Tesla and MG have different battery tech or same same?

        • Same. MG or SAIC makes this battery. It’s LFP. Tesla uses battery suppliers like CATL and BYD. the model 3/Y RWD uses a similar battery chemistry

    • Does that include residual value payback?

      • yes, it depends on how you do it of course and your tax bracket. 10 years is a long time you can do 2x 5 year leases or 3x 3 year leases, or recycle 1 year lease every year.
you get into the sub 2k territory doing 2x 2 year leases alone depending on your marginal rate

        • +1

if you stack 1 year terms, you won't get to reset the residual to 65% each time. From my experience doing them (15 years worth) generally 3 years is needed to get the reset on residual value. 3x3x3 would get you from 35 to 16.5 then 7.7 then 3.6. Even though the last term is still 100% pre-tax, you might find the management fees negate the benefit.

          • @Matt P: I'd probably just keep the car and pay the residual, even better if you need a second car / 'give' it to family/friends and NL a new car

  • Need some advice here please. Shall I sell my 2019 CX 5 and buy this? I live in QLD and living in an apartment with free charger (well as tenant). Thanks.

    • cx 5 is a great car

    • If the car meets your requirements, couldn't see why not.

    • Yes, you need to buy this car, you've already decided in your mind, don't miss out!

  • +2

    I excite!

  • +2

Great win for everyone on the 10 year warranty. This will put pressure on the other car markers to step up their game

  • +1

    MY23 model ?
have these been sitting in the back lot for 12 months?

  • I keep getting tempted to buy an EV but then remember I only really drive about 5000km a year and cant justify spending the money.

    • +1

Well this car is for you. If your current car is fine then don’t worry about it. If it’s not and you have a drive way and can charge at home from a PowerPoint. This is a bargain

  • +1

    New one coming out soon

  • -1

Excite, yep it will when it faulty and gives you electric shocks

    • +1

Is it better to be electric shocked or get bit by a shark? One of the greatest questions ever asked.

    • Is that a common occurrence or is your comment indicative of a lack of understand about how anything works?

  • +1

Computers used to cost 100's of thousands of dollars and were as big as a room. Now they're a few hundred dollars and fit in your hand

The first people who bought computers were suckers and should have waited.

    • The first to buy anything is usually rich people. Yea they're suckers but I don't think the amount was anything significant for them

    • +1

Considering the computer could process calculations faster per second than 100's of people on $1000 salaries in a single day. I think the first people who bought them were pretty happy with their purchases.

    • Materiality is subjective. Not necessarily suckers. That's like saying early customers for GPS tracking system are suckers because now it's pretty much free.

        /cries over my TomTom

        • Loved my tomtom. If they had kept maps free indefinitely They probably would have continued to kick ass.

I think this car comes with a free home charger.

Victoria still progressing backwards with no EV scheme.

    • +1

$177 billion in debt limits what the gov can do I guess.

Though it doesn't stop them progressing the $216 billion metro rail loop.

      https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/mar/13/labor…

      • Yes and to relieve that debt, they tried to punish EV owners with EV tax. charging like 2.8 cents per km driven.

    • +3

Victoria is a basket case mess who finally realised they can no longer spend other people’s money endlessly.

Victorians are not even close to understanding the slap in the face they are going to receive in the next 2 decades once the government really clamps down to pay this debt.

We thought property taxes were bad, that’s just the start.

      • Let's just hope the $216 billion forecast for the rail loop is correct, costs almost always blow out very considerably.

        • It’s not, but at this point who cares when you’re spending about 30 million a day on interest you just go with the flow at this point.

      • Definitely going to start cutting down on public services, screw cost of living and a downgrade in Victoria's credit rating, increasing borrowing costs and further straining the budget. Definitely more cuck ups but these are like the forefront in my opinion. Prob won't be liveable end of 2030.

        • Yep agree, I wouldn’t laugh and think I’m in the Truman show if they actually stopped building a project expected to cost 200 billion and has no business case, but it’s that comical now that I just don’t know what to say. I’m just grateful that when I need to I can leave Victoria and go elsewhere, not as easy for everyone else unfortunately.

      • +1

Victoria: Why I'm proud to be a South Australian.

    • isn't that the case with any governments who doesn't want to promote businesses, but rather than tax, tax and tax..? and make everyone poorer

  • +1

Interesting this YouTube video is claiming real world range of 250-255KM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3c7HeBL76dY @14:43. Compared to the 320KM it's claiming.

    • Yikes. That's really bad right??? Or is it okay considering the 35K price???

      • It’s not really bad. It’s just a bit disappointing. But this is the right price for this. It’s a city car with half decent performance and good enough usable range for the same price as the disappointingly cheap Hyundai i30.
        What would you prefer?

    • +1

Not idea how he got 20kWh/100km. The only time mine goes over 20kWh/100km is when I am towing.

My average is below 15kWh/100km, giving me a real world range in excess of the 320km WLTP.

      • This is reassuring

      • prob has a lot to do with how much of a leadfoot you are.

      • +1

Same, my average over 20k km (1.5 year with the car) is 15.6kwh/100km.

  • I have a feeling this price is in anticipation of the new entry level BYD Dolphin which will be priced very close to 35K driveaway or under.

  • Great price and value for money as secondary car.
Word of warning to all car makers (especially the German/French etc), seems like they gonna suffer the same bloodbath in next couple of years with these highly efficient chinese car makers. Recently test drove BYD and it was amazing. Sorry to say most of the previous generation cars can compete at these price ranges

    • Neither can most of these Chinese car makers compete themselves. Alot will go bust over the next decade too.

  • BYD is much better. MG is not that MG from GB. Now it's just a cheap made Chinese brand with 2 "MG" badges.

    • I get that the BYD battery tech is impressive, but both the interior and exterior honestly look so tacky. It's a shame, you'd think one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world would be able to invest in better designers.

      • they hired wolfgang the head of design at Audi.. I don't mind the Seal, Atto3 could be worse but dolphin is not much to look at. looks are very subjective though

        • +4

Wow, that IS interesting - I can certainly see his hand in the BYDs, I think the issue is that they over design. His designs at Audi was restrained in just the right ways, but at BYD there are just so many extra and unnecessary little curves, flairs and lights - almost like the opposite issue of Teslas extreme minimalism. Even the logo uses a typeface that that looks like it was stolen from a D-list sci-fi movie.

I've been driven inside a few of them and they've all made me feel like I was inside a bluetooth speaker from Aliexpress, especially with the ambient lighting changing colour and intensity with the music haha!

          • @poppingtags: I agree the interior on the atto 3 was too polarising (I didn't mind really but my wife vetoed it as soon as she sat in one) and they toned it back a lot in the Seal and Sealion 6. Seal looks slick exteriorly but also a little too busy if you had to nitpick.

      • Father in law bought one a few weeks back. I really like the look of it and prefer it looks wise to Teslas. But maybe I'm just tacky.

        • +1

Haha, looks are very subjective! The exterior tends to have fewer over-designed elements imo (the cheap looking black and silver plastic is what immediately stands out), it's the interior that just looks like you were swallowed by a whale!, compared to something like the Hyundai Kona or the Kia EV5 (both of which preserve many physical buttons like BYDs), which in my opinion look more refined and restrained.

That said, they've been selling really well - and Tesla's own designs are polarising too!

    • BYD is not in the same price bracket though, so should be better.

    • If you can wait and want a better spec car then Sealion 7 is worth the wait. It's coming this quarter or early next year

  • Bought one over a year ago, when govt was also giving rebates on top. Nice to drive, wife loves it, got the essence with openable sunroof unlike a tesla.

Like most ev's the best range is only during summer. During winter on the southeast states you lose about 1/3 of the range.

Vcheap to run, now that more electric companies offer free power from 12 to 6am to ev owners.

    • +1

Which companies offer free charging between 12am and 6am?

  • Any owners can chime in confirming REAL world range?

    • Check youtube.
