Warranty:

MG has introduced the longest factory warranty ever offered by a new-car maker in Australia – 10 years or 250,000km, whichever comes first. In effect from today (1 August 2024) for all newly-registered petrol, hybrid and electric MG models, the new warranty applies to vehicles not deemed to be "commercial use" – such as Ubers, taxis, food delivery couriers and driving schools.

Value for Money
Car is depreciating assets unless someone wants to go back to Covid era

Range Anxiety
Many in city, may be fine with 300 km for week usage. May be their secondary vehicle. So it has its own market.

  • Our second car is on the firtz being nearly 16 years old and we're looking to replace it. Regardless of this being EV or not, it's still relatively cheap as a car - even the base-line Toyota Corolla Hatch (new) is more than this MG deal.

The MG is a good candidate for second and local driving vehicle. Normal wall socket charge works as our current use might have the second car sitting for days without use.

    Need to crunch some numbers.

  • All collapsing against the Chinese made cars

    • +1

It is a Chinese made car, but I guess that proves your point.

  • +1

    Consider a used/demo mg4 excite 51 for less

  • Oh boy, was on the cusp of buying the Peugeot e-2008, don't know if I can resist biting on this deal though!!!

    • Where from? Didn't they all get snapped up a few months ago? I see only a few $40k+ ones on Carsales

      • I was one of the lucky ones who got in early with a deposit when the deal first dropped, but later pulled the pin

  • +1

They are certainly backing themselves with that warranty. If nothing else it should help make the EV market more competitive.

  • how does this compare to the top of the line MG ZST ESSENCE for $30,990

    • The ZST is on a newer platform. The interior in particular is much nicer than the ZS.

    • The zst is amazing value

  • +2

If you buy it on a novated lease and therefore pay for it through pre-tax income and you're on a 35% tax rate, you'd be getting an EV for $20K with no ongoing petrol costs and a 10 year warranty. That has seriously got to be one of the best deals on a new car ever.

  • Can someone with a far superior brain than myself advise if something like this would be worth while for our situation;

    • My wife can get a novated lease/salary packaging through Ramsay Healthcare.
    • Works part time approx. $65k per year.
    • Drives approx.10,000 km per year.
    • Currently drive a VW Tiguain 2013 worth about $11k.
    • I drive a company car that I use privately if that makes any difference.

    Cheers

    • Hard to say without key details such as your rough salary and the how much debt you both owe.

  • +1

This car should be $29900 drive away…no more to pay …then it will be the end of ICE cars.

    • +2

It is even less than that in Qld ($6000 rebate)

  • +8

Pretty cheap, bought my Essence version of this car a couple of years ago for close to $50k, the essence has leather seats and roof rails and electric drivers side adjustable seat.
KM wise, its down to a full charge of around 301km, so not to bad. I am yet to reach the servicing for the car, which is capped at around $250-$270 every two years, so next nothing. I have driving it about 200km at most in one go which was basically out to Dalby from Ipswich, and it goes quite well, def needs a charge coming back home, it was taking most of the hit going up the range, so 200km of driving is more like 260plus of usage (so despite it saying it has 300km of travel, that's based on normal driving, not up hills for long periods, not aircon running full on). I also own a Tesla model Y, its def a bigger car internally, also harder to park, easier to scrape the wheels for some reason. But Tesla does have faster charging speeds and more available chargers at like hotels because its been around longer, but otherwise you can charge both cars practically anywhere. This is a bargain really, and I would highly recommend it. If you can salary sacrifice the car probably even better (I believe there is no FB tax on this car, but I'm not entire sure, so dont quote me). The car is speedy enough, not quite as fast as the tesla but still waste most cars on the road. Very comfy to drive, steer. lumber support could be better. Apple car play only works with phone plugged in, but Tesla has no apple car play (which sucks), so it has Tesla beat there anyway. Android phones work wireless. Also has wireless phone charging, cupholders etc. I would like to see the car with an extra 100 to 200km of distance, but other than that its a good car, better than any ICE car you will drive today, even a merc.

Forgot to mention that EV's are classified as 1-3cyclinder cars, so cheaper on rego also. But check your insurance and they can be more expensive there. And also this car's battery is designed to be charged to 80% most of the time, with 100% for those odd occasions you want to drive further. The Tesla Model Y variant that I have has an LFP battery and is able to be charged to 100% constantly.

    • +1

These are listed as LFP batteries too. Thanks for the good write-up BTW

    • Hey does it automatically stop charging at 80%?

  • The price is causing me to question buying a tesla for almost twice the price if I spitball the risk all electric cars will lose 50% of value in 5 years 🤔

    • +2

Mate you only live once. Money go to the grave when you die.
If you can afford it get a Tesla.
Sitting in an MG is not the same.

      • +10

But that assumes that the money saved is left to the grave, in reality he’ll spend that $30k on a nicer house or eating out, or yearly holidays etc.

        • +1

I'd sit on a beach sipping cocktails over in a Tesla (or ferrari for that matter) on the way to work any day!

          • -5

@May4th: Yes keep driving your shitbox.

            • +1

@neostarsx: if that helps your ego, sure..but imagine using tesla as an example of living large..

  • I know some people mentioned novated lease. What's the best way as a self-employed person living in QLD? If I go through the business, I can FBT exemption but can only claim $3k from rebates. Is there a novated lease equivalent for self-employed?

    • +1

If you're a sole trader, you generally cannot get a novated lease. Sole traders cannot pay themselves a salary or wage, which is a requirement for novated leases. However, if you're self-employed and operate under a company or trust structure, you may be eligible for a novated lease. The key is that you must pay yourself a regular wage as an employee of your own company and pay PAYG tax to the ATO

  • +2

The Peugeot E-2008 is way bettter and was only an extra $5k. It dropped from $65kish to $39990 then in WA you get another $3500 from our thieving government. The E2008 drive is amazing for the money. Such a great car. Only thing that it needs is a bigger battery. Range is OK at 320km odd but would be perfection if it came with another 10kw to get a further 100kms or so for say another $5k.
The prices of EV's are getting cheaper and hioefully keep going down with tech and batteries getting better.

    • Possibly, but also $5k more expensive.

Exciting times ahead I reckon, so many more ev deals will pop up

  • This is tempting as I’m looking at 10+ carollas with over 150km for under $10k.

I don’t know anything about mg though not reading anything terrible about them , everyone seems to say ‘good for the price’ . Thinking with warranty and locked services it’s gotta save me in 10yrs on petrol alone.
There’s gotta be a catch right? Ie when you need replacement parts as part of service might cost a fortune ?

    • My colleague has this car, it's surprisingly ok inside, though the suspension is half baked. Hit a few bumps and the car pogos for longer than I'd like. My 2 cents, for the city a perfectly decent car, though if I was doing longer highway jaunts, I'd get something with tighter dynamics.

  • +1

The sunroofs leak then the footwells fill up with water .
But warranty’seem to pretty good from Chinese manufacturers these days ,

I’d still get good comprehensive car insurance just to be safe .

    • +1

Any sunroof leaks when the drains fill up unfortunately. Has happened in my Merc and Subaru (in a very leafy area).
Sunroof drain design could be a thing though if not done right.

My next car WILL NOT have a sunroof for this reason.

  • Aren't MGs absolute garbage cars with horrendous service and repairs?

  • +2

Drove a standard MG HS with recent car rental. What a nightmare design of the ACC! Not to mention confusing buttons and sticks… Made me wanna return the car the second day I drove it. Let's hope the EV fare better?

    • I drove a MG HS Vibe (2nd trim from bottom) with as a rental as well. Can agree that the air-con control panel is ridiculous - press a physical button to go into the air-con menu only to have to control temp/fans/vent via touchscreen. If you are using Android Auto / Apple Carplay there's no physical button to get back to it after you swap into the air-con or any other menu - you need to hit the Home physical button and then select the correct mirroring software onscreen.

At least the cruise control worked on the HS - easy enough to figure out on/off, unlike the ZS where I found it was impossible to know what the cruise control stick did, as the function of the buttons seemed to change randomly.

Doesn't seem to be much chatter or enthusiasm from anyone actually buying one, just a lot of upvotes…

Chiming in here. My wife was keen when I told her about this deal on Friday so we went down and took one for a test drive.
We compared this to a Model 3 test drive we also did on the weekend. (We have driven the BYD Atto 3 last year as well). For the price and for her usage it was a no brainer and we just qualify for the full $6k QLD rebate. Driveway price with blue premium paint and after rebate is $29,960.

I didn't drive it, but rode shotgun. Honestly, Australia has been crying out for cheap EVs and it feels like they are finally here. With the improved charging infrastructure up our way (Sunshine Coast) I think it's a great opportunity to seriously consider an EV if your are in the market for this class/size of vehicle.

      • +2

Thanks for the reply. Yes think we're pulling the trigger as well, cooling off period will end today. Envious about the rebate you guys get there!

        • +2

I went to a dealership in WA and they said that the car is sold out here. They might bring a few over to WA but said that there are roughly 15 people before me on the waiting list. That was Friday afternoon. Maybe even more on the list now.

    • +2

We have given this some serious thought but have decided to hold off.
Why? There are 12 Chinese EV brands coming (dumping) into Australia over the next 12 months and lots of new models. The effect has to be competition and reduced prices - its' economics 101.
This is really a run out deal on a 2023 car. Its a great price but you will be able to pick the same thing up used even cheaper in 6 months or who knows what new offers?
We are going to wait it out, This is just the first shot of what hopefully will become an EV price war.

      • +1

Economics 101 will also tell you to look at the amount of money you could save on petrol over the 6-12 months you wait. Yes, cars will get cheaper, but depending on the kms driven and whether you have solar it might be diminishing returns

  • People are sharing feedback on car's design , performance etc but have we give a thought on how Aus roads are getting deteriorated over last few years?

  • a thought on how Aus roads are getting deteriorated over last few years?

So what can the government do ? Maybe they should increase the fuel levy.

    • What will that do?

The fuel levy has not fixed the roads so far it simply puts more money into general revenue

      • Maybe it will result in less car on the road.

        • As the road network deteriorates it makes that big 4x4 look like the better option and the EV without a spare wheel looks like a city only solution.

    • Or reduce the distance between cities and towns?

      • More towns might not be a practical solution but more service options like a mobile service that brings you a spare wheel to suit your car as a loan while you get yours fixed and the ability to return it to the nearest depot rather than where you got it from for convenience would be a step in the right direction.

  • -1

We are paying almost 50cents per litre , roughly 15 BILLION per year. Having roads in major cities where every 500 meter, you will notice pothole, having bigger and more comfy car is better option for your back.

Building and Maintaining road has to be someone's responsiblity.

  • Anyone know if the Essence model (with sunroof) will receive similar price reduction?

    • -1

Its a brave man that would trust Chinese sunroof seals not to leak after a few years in the hot Aussie sun.

      • I agree, but I wouldn't write of a car with a leaky sunroof. Like most parts of a car, a seal can be repaired/replaced and most likely under warranty

  • +2

      MG ZS EV Essence

For $40,000, this is a good value. It handles responsively and offers a smooth ride, driving better than I expected for an inexpensive full electric SUV. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

      • +2

Picked up mine today (just the Excite version). Happy with it, although already a few quirks such as cannot scan the QR code to connect to the iSmart app and the navigation won't load due to an error. Will chase up with the dealership next week. Love the white, looks sharp!

  • If you organise your own comprehensive insurance for NL, do you sign up as under finance or no finance? significantly cheaper if you say no finance

Good luck with your EVs clearly the tech is not right yet watch this…..

    https://youtu.be/vNo9PJP9Qa8?si=rgsmyh4hIGvxVIJz

I would be parking away from the house not in the garage attached to the home…..

Depends on battery tech I reckon.

      • But what battery tech is the right one that is the question.

I see a place for electric cars and would buy one as a city runabout but I don’t see them as a viable touring vehicle at this point.

  • +1

Dealership in Adelaide just offered me the Essence for $41k if I wanted to upgrade. I'll of course ask to get it at $39,990 to match the Sydney offer. The synthetic leather seats are a big turn off for me though.

    • +1

Ha. So they're not willing to come down. In fact, they want to tack on an extra $500 to include tint, rubber mats, a ZS EV key ring and a bottle of wine from the Barossa Valley.

I'll stick with the Excite in that case, thanks.

  • I got a message from a dealership that all excite MY23 are sold out nationwide and that also includes fleet vehicles too!

    • wow, i was at the dealer two days ago and they had no mention of lower stock

    • +1

Really? So deal is over then?
We need to get confirmation on this

  • +1

I can't be the only one that's irritated that this is not likely to tick over to 500 upvotes… can I??? So close!

    • +2

    • +2

      There you go.

    • +1

Thanks to you both! Feel much better now!

  • These will be good buys at 5-10k second hand in a few years

    • -1

You won't have to wait that long LOL

  • +2

Update for anyone still following this:
I just spoke to the a Vic dealer and these are still available but the Excite model is only order-able in the blue colour unless other stock is held by local dealers.

    • Just got told 100% out of stock in Australia. Not sure if salesperson was trying to funnel us to certain cars though as another family got shown the Excite EV.

      • My info is from Sunday - technically possible they are sold out but car but salesman's number 1 motto is 'sell what you've got' - so they could be trying to upsell you. Also, probably very low profit margin for them on the $34,990 model, so better for them to try to sell you something else

        • +1

Yeah he was young. Awkward moment when another family got shown the EV in front of us. Could be stock at non MG dealers as well.

          • @Cave Fire: What was your response when you saw that another family were being shown the EV?

            • +1

@inasero: Didn't know what to say, but at the same time, the other sales person could have not have known it was OOS. Only remember now he was trying to persuade them away from getting a full EV.

  • +1

This is actually a really decent price for city run about. Price parity at last!

  • Pretty cheap for an EV - good to see prices are coming down

During COVID times the chip shortage made the price of cars ridiculous

seems like the influx of Chinese cars will counter balance that and overall benefit the consumer

  • This is insane value
