  • I wonder if you can use a 2280 SSD?

    • +3

      Apparently only a 2242 slot:

      • M.2 Slot 1x 2242 PCIe NVMe 4.0 x4

      Source: Laptop Media

  • +1

Any review of this laptop on youtube? Pictures?

      • Not the same but similar

    • +2

146 upvotes on last deal… I’d say it must be pretty good

    • My reply above has a link to a review by Laptop Media; it seems quite comprehensive, including tear-down video and method. Their review sample has the same CPU and screen optioned but I am not sure how much RAM was specced.

Edit: The review sample has a smaller battery than the config in this deal.

    • When you close it, the gap is a bit big between the screen and body. The Screen is not as good as my XiaoMi book (2 years ago, OLED, 500 nit, higher resolution). Other than that, all good.

  • +4

Damn, very tempted, wish it was the 14inch model.

  • Would laptops like this be able to play GTA5 or RDR?

    • +3

GTA5, pretty easily. Can probably play very high 1080p and the 1% won't dip below 60 fps.

In R2D2, it'll do 60 fps if you do low to medium settings.

Think of this as around the performance of a 1060 3gb.

      • +1

If your gaming better off getting something like this:

        https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/laptops-&-notebooks/gami…

Thats a decent deal, and the laptop is fine (I have a differnet model with a faster cpu but this will easily play)

        • -1

I agree, but if I'm playing older games like GTA and R2D2, this laptop has alot going for it.

Pretty big fan of 1440p OLED screen and the 76w battery add on. I also found myself needing 32gb ram surprisingly often as well. So I'll personally choose this.

Edit: wait wtf, why is it 1280p? I thought it said 2k?

  • +1

Is this integrated graphics? How is it with gaming?

    • I'm also curious about this - if it can handle some games (not even at 4k), this might be a winner!

      • Might look into this, my LG gram is also integrated but can't even play any 3d games tho..

        • If you find out, let me know! This ticks a lot of boxes, but if it can game as well then I think it's a definitive purchase

          • @Opaquer: This is slightly more powerful than what's in my ROG Ally which is a dedicated gaming handheld - yes you are going to have to turn down graphics settings and resolution but I haven't found anything it won't run yet.

    • +4

Yes it's integrated. AMD's best integrated is the 890m I think, which is very rare atm. The 780m can play most games at their lowest settings and is a little bit slower in most cases than the Intel Arc integrated.

Need to pay $20 for backlit KB??? Shouldn't this feature be standard these days?

    • Kaikor I paid the extra $30 for backlit kB.

      • Well the wife did. Birthday present and I am near on blind. Backlit yeah should be included. Bit hey 1339 all up delivered is a great deal.

        • Yeah for sure my old eyes need backlit, and that abyss blue color looks really sexy too, another $30!

          • @kaikor: D'oh I should have done the abyss blue too :( oh well when I look at it I'll go not as sexy but I got $30 for something else :p

    • Comes up as $30 for me.

  • How much more would I need to spend to get something with:

    a) a screen I can read in sunlight
    b) expandable RAM

The Legion 9i might fit the bill screen and RAM wise. Somewhat pricey though. I'd be happy with a older slower power efficient CPU even a 2nd hand machine with discrete graphics.

    Suggestions?

      $1K more

One option is to buy one of the Pro IPS models and swap in your own 500nits OLED display:

      Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 R7-8845HS, 32GB DDR5, 512GB SSD, Radeon 780M, 16" 2.6K IPS 350nits 120Hz, 84Wh Bat $1299 Delivered @ Lenovo
      Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5i EVO CU5-125H, 32GB DDR5, 512GB SSD, Arc 7, 14" 2.9K IPS 400nits 120Hz, 84Wh Bat $1348 Delivered @ Lenovo

For a cheapest DIY upgrade base, there are plenty of sub $1K ThinkPads that run dual SODIMM slots with 45% NTSC IPS screens like this recent deal

      • Thanks, I don't know if I can manage a screen swap. If I could I'd put in a transflective screen if any were are about in that size. I don't know about the E-series. Is the build quality decent enough? The hinges tend to go on my laptops or break the plastic. Is the L-series a happy medium?

        • For a rugged tank like build, a custom Metabox is another option

They have a number of models with RAM slots and ability to option up to a 500nits display

Send them an email with your configuration requirements and see what they come back with

    • I ordered a legion 5 slim the other day with 500 nits anti-glare screen and 2 SODIMM slots. Could be an option.

      • What's the build quality like of Legion 5's? How many nits is enough? I have much to learn…

        • +1

Lenovo Legion is known for its build quality among gaming laptop brands

          • @tjoy: Thanks, but how does that compare to build quality of Lenovo's other brands? Really, only considering the Legion for the screen and upgradeable RAM.

  • +1

just bought one. This ticks almost all the boxes replacing my Macbook M1.
    Upgraded to 1T.

    • Why the switch? Just after something different. The MacBook monitor limit has been annoying me (if it was 3 external in clam I’d be fine ) but iMessage alas owns me due to family and also iPhone cameras being consistently good.

      • +2

Yes, Monitor limit annoyed me too! I had a docking once work with 2 external monitor, and suddenly not.

plus, RAM and Storage are too expensive to upgrade.
plus I wanna switch to Linux too. which I've been using for years.

        • Yeah I too hear the call of a Linux thinkpad.

        • +1

          I'm doing exactly the same.

Looking for a Lenovo to replace an m1 pro 14 in an effort to switch to Linux as darktable runs poorly on macos, but tbh the screen, speakers, general build quality and possibly battery are a big part of the appeal I'm finding hard to replicate. Let us know how you go.

          • @Unotifoso: I have problem with the CUDA setup in my Linux PC with 4060. guess AMD runs a bit better than Nvidia on Linux.
hope this one will be better.
I'm not a big fan of Apple. M1 was really good years ago, won't go with M4 as it's not justified with the expensive RAM and Storage.

            • +1

@sydney rider: My desktop is Ryzen 5700x + RTX 2060, Ubuntu 24.10, running first party Nvidia drivers. I believe I had to install the cuda dev kit for ollama optimisation but all working okay in Ubuntu. Should be the same in mint and other distros that play nice with Nvidia and have a decent user base such as Fedora.

Don't hate me for my snaps

              • +1

@Unotifoso: thx so much for the insight. will try when I hv spare time.
I tried to mount using my dockers on my PC, running browsers VNC from my M1 (saving memory of the MBP lol)
somehow the Nvidia doesn't work well(it once worked ok. strange again.)

          • @Unotifoso: I have mbp m1 pro 14 and it's really hard to go back to anything else. need 16" but not too keen to go mbp 16 - too dear and too heavy

but this Lenovo is no replacement, need higher res panel. everything 16 with good panels is $2000+ and I could just get a refurb mbp m1 16 for that money it's superb.

            • @shabaka: yeah. it's a personal choice. go for it.

            • @shabaka: I wish they would make a lighter MacBook :)

              • @Lastora: haha they already have, I still look at mba 15 from time to time, but they downgraded it too much (for marketing purposes) even tho pricing once you start upgrading it makes even less sense

I wish they just wiped model line clean and did a 15 inch pro that is light like mba 15 with proper miniled screen and speakers, 17 inch mbp again, and airs I don't really care what they do, not my market

            • @shabaka: My thoughts are similar. Also the offset keyboard irks me. I'm a sucker for MacBook aesthetics and dedication to the tactile experience… But surely one of these Lenovo posts will eventually hit the spot

              • @Unotifoso: p16s comes pretty close if you got access to education - for just under $2k can configure high res OLED panel but that would be 16gb and need storage upgrade too

HP was clearing x360 model 16" with a good (but super glossy) OLED panel for $2k, aluminium body too. 32/1tb. but keyboard sucked

                no joy for now

all I crave for with my mbp 14 is just a lil bit more screen real estate, everything else is perfect. screen, speakers, keyboard, design, power, battery life..

not using darktable tho, is it any good? I got Luminar it's super good and not subscription based, also M silicon optimised

                • @shabaka: Lots of Apple haters due their tactics and pricing, but sit down with the hardware and it's hard to fault 👌🏼

                  • +1

@Unotifoso: I must admit on my mbp 14 I experienced a lot of crashes and restarts when switching display calibration profiles, using just the standard settings, no fancy stuff.

so experience wasn't as smooth as I would have expected. otherwise no other complaints

                    • @shabaka: Similar here… If this happened on Linux (via dmesg or some other logs) or even Windows (thanks to the large user base), you'd likely find some solutions. But on macOS? Hardly anything. No idea why it's such a black hole for troubleshooting!

    • Upgraded to 1T.

      What is "1t"?

      • 1T SSD. It's 512GB if not upgrade.
I could have chosen DIY but just don't wanna bother.

        • fingerprint for $20. not expensive and future proof for me.

    Touchscreen?

    • Only when my fingers are greasy.

  • I was looking at the Yoga Slim 7i Aura but with the OLED screen, this seems to tick the 4k movies ans basic gaming box. It's just a bit heavier.

  • thinkpad homies represent xoxo

  • USB-C supports up to 3840x2160@60Hz

Is that one monitor or can it do two monitors at that resolution and frame rate? Specifically the LG 32UN88A of course

Realistically, what's the battery life? 8 hours?

No reason why I can't remove Windows and chuck a Linux distro like Ubuntu on?

  • IdeaPad Slim? Or IdeaPad Pro? Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 R7-8845HS, 32GB DDR5, 512GB SSD, Radeon 780M, 16" 2.6K IPS 350nits 120Hz, 84Wh Bat $1299 Delivered

    • I personally prefer the OLED

      • Yeah it would certainly look nicer, is brighter too, but chat elsewhere said OLED uses a little more energy too. So I guess if battery life was the ultimate goal, maybe the pro could win out there.

    • +1

i'm considering the Pro for better battery life (every other screen in my life is IPS anyway, don't want to ruin the experience by getting OLED)

      • +1

You wouldn't really "ruin" the experience. IPS is still good screens.

OLED is just really nice, that's all.

    • +1

      Received the ideapad pro yeaterday.
Wished i got this ideapad slim, for the better screen , finger print reader.

    • +1

I got this exact laptop (Slim 5) inc fingerprint/larger battery/32Gb. It's a great machine for the price. The screen is excellent but definitely reflective so be careful if using in bright spaces. The resolution is absolutely fine on this screen size.

      • Fewer pixels to push may result in another slight battery gain too…

  • 1280p isn't exactly high res, tiny upgrade over 1080p. need at least WQXGA

  • -3

    Fingerprint reader?

    Only 2K display?

    • -2

      WTF is with the downvotes?

Fingerprint reader is not listed in the specs. I checked and you have to pay extra for it.

The post right above mine comments on the 2K display. I think its bad for a 16" personally.

There are some real idiots on here.

  • No touch screen .. 😭

  • how's the battery life of this compared to an M3 MacBook air?

    • Windows laptops have left the chat.

  • Tough decision over this one or the Snapdragon® X Plus X1P-42-100 model. Thoughts?

  • Just wondering if anyone can recommend a 13 to 14inch laptop that's touch screen, folds all the way around like a 2 in 1. Similar specs to this, thank you

  • Just a heads up that at least for my laptop order, DHL Express tracking showed a saga about a mass shipment from China that got broken out into sets of packages once it entered Australia. I was getting regular updates about my order as it entered AU yesterday, yet today my package doesn't even show up in any of the sets of packages going to Canberra.

Meanwhile Lenovo's quietly pushed back the laptop delivery date to 19/11 instead of 15/11 as originally stated. I can see other people's shipments in the same waybill are out for delivery, so that's nice for them I guess.

  • Very good price!

I wonder what the battery life is like compared to the Qualcomm laptops. Those have insane battery life. I get they are a different class in terms of use case but similar spending price.

  • I was able to get Jbhifi to price match. It was the 3 cell battery, but with the backlit keyboard and 1tbssd. Very happy. It's a wonderful looking laptop. I had a HP envy which was pooping itself.

    • any link you could share or receipt?

      • Hey Jaff. Not sure how to share an image in here, but if you DM me, I think I can send photos that's way if you want.

    • Was that in store or online? and could you please send me the receipt too please, I'm trying to get one through JB

  • Does this thing have an aluminum body, or at least to cover the screen.

I bought a lenovo PC with a plastic body, the screen got bent, broke and then Lenovo tried to charge me 80% of the RRP to get it fixed, so really want to avoid that…

The reason why I ask is because it says: "The bottom cover of the laptop uses 50% recycled aluminum, and 90% ocean-bound plastic in the system"

Rang Lenovo, who stated that both the top and bottom casing is aluminium. Hope this assists.
