    Bigger screen - 15.6" vs 14"

Often 15.6" are cheaper compared to 14". Some people prefer the small screen.

Big fan of Metabox, would recommend them for custom builds.

    • +1

i was gonna say. Even a 14" is a big laptop these days. Anything bigger is a negative for me.

    • +2

Great to see you don't have to pay the Microsoft tax if you want to install Linux!

  • +6

Damn this would be perfect but screen too big! Want a 14" laptop for portability!

  • +5

    Chonky boi

  • Can it be charged though usb c port?

      • +1

There appears to be a barrel AC port on the back of the laptop in one of the photos, the specs also mention 180W AC Adapter and 1x DC Jack in
The USB C port on the laptop looks like a USB C port with display output capability only from what I can tell from the picture.

        • +1

          Thanks for the clarification.

        • how can you tell what type of usb c port it is by looking at the pictures?

          • +2

@morediscount: By zooming in on the picture that has both sides of the laptop displayed, you can see a USB looking logo next to the port. usually it gives you a hint of its capability, it definitely doesn't look like a thunderbolt port otherwise you would see a lighting bolt logo next to it.

      Deal breaker if you cant

  • So tempting.

  • +1

Very nice, pity the battery isn't a bit larger like 65-70wh

  • +3

Only built in graphics and Intel's on board graphics is not good.

    • +4

Not a gaming laptop so it's fine

A dGPU would just chew up the already short battery life even more

There's a name I haven't seen in an eternity! I used to have an 'adjacent' brand aeons ago (the mighty "Clevo" P170-HM) and it absolutely ripped! Well, it did at least until the ATI Radeon 6990M graphics chipset plague descended… sigh!

    • I'm curious. Lots of search results showing problems with the GPU but it's the "descended" part I would like to know more about.

Was it a bad update that bricked anything with that GPU or did the chipset have a tendency to cark it before its time?

      • +1

Some had overheating issues (beyond what the ambient chassis & cooling could mitigate), others just died for no good reason, it wasn't what I remember as a "widespread" problem but it was still "not uncommon". A real shame because it was an absolute stormer of a GPU back in the day!

Metabox for the win. My 17.3" Metabox laptop is 6 years old now and only just required a new screen ribbon cable. It survived being opened and closed ~20 time a day, 5 days a week for 6 years lol. That's about 30,000 opens and closes!

  • +1

Yeah Metabox is reliable I reckon.

I have still in semi regular use…
    2 x Metabox W370SS laptop 17.3" - GTX 860M
    from 8 Sept 2014.
(Couple of keys a bit sticky and battery needs replacing)

That website is so user unfriendly both on a computer browser or on a phone. I would have loved to have some other (real) photos of that laptop.

  • +1

Metabox is a great vendor - they have good bang for buck and have generally great service/delivery. They buy Clevo (or similar) chassises and build the laptop from there.

  • +1

Great specs for the price, this would be perfect if it had a Thunderbolt port.

  • I bought a second hand Metabox about 6 years ago and it just refuses to die. Two keys have come off the keyboard and that's it!

  • My metabox lasted about 3 years. Hinge broke then screen broke. Decent otherwise

  • Is it a reliable machine for IT studies ( run multiple virtual machines etc) any suggestions

  • +3

    32GB (one-1) version for $799 even better I reckon

    https://www.metabox.com.au/store/b507/note-One-1-Laptop

    who needs 64GB anyway?

    • +2

My mate says anyone who uses adobe software. And even then its not enough apparently. Was considering original linked
puter but your link is now my kids school puter for next year. Thanks!

    • Note the 32gb one also "only" has 1tb SSD instead of 2tb. Still a good deal though, and can always add more storage down the track

  • anyone know the screen brightness?

    • In my experience, metabox use great screens. I don't think that will be your issue with this.

  • any thoughts on https://www.metabox.com.au/store/b478/Metabox-Edge-NL57AU-i7… it looks like better one

      • quarter or eighth the memory of one-1 and one-2 respectively. Base model 8GB is really not enough and I'd recommend 16GB as a minimum.
      • 12450 has similar performance to the 1355U in your post
      • the 1355 would have much better battery life due to the 1355U being much more power efficient
      • 1355U graphics better than 12450H

essentially, for the extra $, you're getting better graphics performance, and better battery.

For an extra $400 (minimum, or $458 if you choose 16GB), I don't think it's worth it tbh

      • thanks….may be the one-2 then

        • forgot to mention, the one you posted is also slightly thinner (also looks better imo)

        • honestly, one-2 is the worst of the bunch. I'd either get one-1 or the one you posted.

the one-2 has 64GB ram (which is stupid in a laptop like this), the one-1 has 32GB (which is probably twice the amount you need so ample.

The one-2 also has 2TB disk, but in my experience, you would never use this unless you're downloading movies. the one-1 has 1TB which is more than enough for most people.

          • @butter: yeah…I was thinking get the Edge and put more ram in it..I need around 36GB of Ram to run the suite I need to run with Linux ( or 64GB as minimal for Windows). And you are right, I may actually get one-1 and put more ram myself. Let me ask the Mrs what budget she would approve first :-)

            • @xmchen: if you need 64GB, then the one-2 is perfect.

  • My experience with metabox p650re (I think I bought it in 2016):

cpu fan is extremely loud (has been since day 1) even without any load, when you put load it roars like a plane taking off (any advice is appreciated)

keyboard began dying (key by key stopped reacting to pressing) right outside of warranty, so had to buy a keyboard and replace it

other than that all good so far
