    Soldered RAM unfortunately.

      16GB no problem.

      8GB problem.

      • today yes.

        tomorrow no.

      • +8

16GB is still decent, especially for a ~$850 laptop, but it would be pretty awesome if you could chuck another 16GB in it.

      It's a sub-1kg laptop…

      • I don't think so.

      • 1.7kg aint it?

        • +3

Check the item description on the eBay link.

Also Pavillion Aeros on the HP website are sub 1 Kg. The Aeros have been around 1 Kg for a number of years now.

My parents bought one last year and it's 1 kg

        • @Phoebus

Third image in the carousel. It's sub 1kg.

And it's a 13.3" thin and light - how the heck can it be 1.7kg? That's probably the package weight, wherever you're pulling that number from.

@Phoebus: Off the HP website for that specific model:

              Dimensions And Weight
              Dimensions without stand (W x D x H)
              29.73 x 21.12 x 1.65 cm (front); 29.73 x 21.12 x 1.74 cm (rear)
              Weight
              <1 kg

Pavilions don't have the best build quality. Good price for the spec but a refurb Elitebook may be a better bet.

The screens always feel so flimsy in store.

Bought the R7 last time the deal came through in Nov, paid $968.80.
Ingram Micro (HP) sent through a tax invoice which actually showed the pre-coupon price of $1,211 so copped a $110 TRS at the airport.
The trackpad leaves a little to be desired but is otherwise an excellent unit.
Processing power is adequate and while the 780M GPU is an integrated chip it still does an excellent job at the casual games I throw at it and the occasional modelling in fusion360.
Easy all day battery for standard work tasks ie office and browsing. Windows Hello with presence sensing sometimes feels like magic and is incredibly lightweight.
I upgraded from a 5 yo Lenovo Yoga 730 and while it feels a little less premium, and sometimes I miss having a touchscreen, I'm very happy with my purchase.

The trick is to not close the screen.

Just keep it open on your desk

    • Had a previous gen one with a ryzen 5000 CPU.
Will agree with the build quality point, in particular the plastic trackpad felt crap, and the (paint?) coating chipped off at the edges pretty easily.

Otherwise was happy with it though!
Battery, performance, and screen were good and the light weight was really noticeable and appreciated.

Ended up giving to a family member but would've been happy to keep it.

  • Was just about to buy the Lenovo Ideapad slim 5x refurbished for $739: https://www.lenovo.com/au/outlet/en/p/laptops/ideapad/ideapa… and OP posted this just in time to change my mind.

Thoughts on the extra $ for QHD? Probably decreases battery life a little but will have higher PPI. Then again, not sure if it would be noticeable on 13inch.

    • Are you ok with the battery life not being as good as the Snapdragon in the lenovo? I would prefer the Snapdragon myself.

Hanging out for another deal like this one:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/892465

      • Decided to buy it - nicer screen and less weight matters more to me.

  • Good find.

  • What laptop around a similar price point of $800 - $1000 offers the best bang for buck in terms of battery life these days?

Happy to go refurb from Lenovo, Dell etc as they often come with 2 or 3 year warranties anyway.

We paid $1086 for this last Nov, very good unit, the QHD IPS display is worth the extra if you are using it standalone.

That said it did fault recently with a BitLocker error and we were stuck in a loop even after providing recovery code. HP support is next to useless and it was painful to rebuild, but this could happen with any PC.

I just checked the OP's links and they're all priced AU $1050 or higher. Not at prices stated.

There aren't many competing laptops to choose from in the <1kg category, but an Ollee would be cheaper and possibly more robust.

Is it worth the extra $100 for the R7? It's for a uni student studying physio.

My most recent purchase is the Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 R7-8845HS which is for a Mech Eng student.

Trying to compare R5-8640U, R7-8840U and R7-8845HS benchmarks and getting confused.

  • I'm a bit clueless when it comes to AMD chips. Considering the Ryzen 5-8640U model but know nothing about them. I do pretty basic web browsing but don't want anything slow. Also would like something with good battery life. Anyone have one of these who can comment on performance, battery life, and if the fans are quiet?

  • A steal at this price. I bought this in December from India for equivalent of 1100 AUD.

It weighs less than 1kg, excellent battery life. USB C charging.

  • Can't believe they're still using the "Pavilion" brand. It's the first time I've seen it for more than 20 years and I was still hit by a convulsing wave of nausea
