  • is this good for uni IT student

    • +3

No, unless you're using it for note taking

      • -1

But you can write only on top side, half of the bottom side is used by fan exhaust.

    • -3

No. Get a windows laptop or Mac.

      • +15

Err this is a windows laptop. Runs Windows 11 24H2 out of the box.

          • +17

            @Freestyle: System —> About

Edition: Windows 11 Enterprise (I changed the key)
            Version: 24H2
            OS build: 26100.3037

You didn't say Windows on x86 or x64 did you?

As far as daily driving goes, zero issues here, everything just works. x86, and x64 binaries run fine.

    • +15

i wouldnt, there is some stuff that still doesnt run on ARM based processors
and IT can be one of those industry where some random tool may be quite important.

      • +5

^ agreed, it's tempting as i personally want to purchase it myself but definitely not worth it at this point in time

      • +1

I disagree with IT programs being an issue. I can't really think of anything that I used while studying CS that doesn't work on Windows ARM. Worst case, if something doesn't specifically support Windows ARM you can get away with using WSL.

There is a lot of non-IT stuff that's a bit iffy - online proctoring/exam programs are one of those - and in those cases you can't use WSL.

        • +1

does snapdragon run unity game engine fine?

        • +1

Depends, but we have had some tools we use just refuse to run (working in IT currently, not studying), most recent was wireguard VPN clients.

Personally if in IT for study or work I just want as little headaches as possible with the OS/hardware I'm using.

No doubt Arm will get there but bugger being the guinea pig at this point…

    • What kind of IT? If you are studying programming I reckon it's fine to get this

Jetbrains IDEs have been support ARM on Windows for quite a while for example https://www.jetbrains.com/go/download/other.html
and golang has supported it since 1.17 also openjdk since 388

But we both know all you need is just VS Code

  • +9

I am super happy with mine purchased from the outlet store last week for $1038 with 32GB, 1TB, OLED specs.

    • +4

I wish I had this when I was a student, I bought a xps13 8th gen i7 with 8g ram in 2018, it's expensive, hot, underpowered. Fans go crazy even with only vs code and chrome running

    • How heavy is the laptop? It says 1.28kg or something but wanted to get exact numbers of the OLED model. Also does the keyboard or screen flex much?

  • -4

IT person at JB Hi-Fi told me stay away with Snapdragon processors for now as theee are some issues with those.

    • +2

And they are? Care to elaborate…?

    • +16

I have been working in IT for over 20 years, and live daily in VS Code, Visual Studio, and whole assortment or weird and wonderful dev tools. All have worked fine. About the only "issue" I had was connecting my old Brother laser printer and just needed to go to advanced section of the wizard to say "my printer is a little older, help me find it".

      • Fix for this is to use Microsoft generic drivers.

        • +1

Yep, used the Microsoft Postscript driver I think, and boom trusty 10+ year brother is doing it's thing.

Is the battery life on these ARM laptops better than Intel / AMD in general? The company I work for is looking for business laptops for our representatives which can last longer between charges than the current HP Elitebook 640 G10's with Intel i5 1335u CPUs (which seem to only get between 3-4 hours of screen-on time). Not suggesting we'd downgrade to these Ideapads, but just after an idea on efficiency.

    • +4

Will actually go all-day, and runs cool too, fan almost never comes on. The only thing I was comparing in Intel/AMD land was the i7 ultra 258v but for half the price of a equivalent laptop, this thing has been a massive win.

    • +4

      Expect double the battery life.

    • +2

Battery life is 2x better than even x86 CPUs on the newest nodes, but expect software compatibility to be hit-or-miss in the early days.

    • +2

it was until intel stepped up and released lunar lake. lunar lake 256v and 258v have identical battery life to snapdragon but has zero app compability issues due to x86 architecture.

      • Where can you buy Lunar Lake though? There's very few models that actually have it.

  • +2

The Snapdragon X Plus is an ARM-based CPU, which may lead to compatibility issues. For example, some printer drivers fail to install.

  • +3

Is there any particular reason to buy a laptop with a Snapdragon rather than an Intel or AMD? Do you get more performance per dollar?

    • Read above comments from BlinkyBill

    • +12

The performance of this laptop has seriously impressed me! Take application startup:

On a fresh boot Slim 5x (SD X Plus) vs Yoga Pro 9i (13th gen i9) both with comparable SSD 6182 MB/s vs 6218 MB/s (CrystalDiskMark)

      Visual Studio 2022, Slim 5x, 2 secs / Yogo Pro 9i 6 secs
      Word: Slim 5x, 2 secs / Yogo Pro 9i 4 secs
      Excel: Slim 5x, 2 secs / Yogo Pro 9i 4 secs

Then there are things like when you "suspend" (ie close the lid) the Intel Laptop, even if you have say 80%, leave it a few days and you'll be greeted with a dead laptop that needs to be plugged in. I did the same with the Slim 5x, and the battery per cent didn't move.

It just seems like a far snappier experience, and this is the lowest spec SD X Plus 8 core, the 12-core Elite I guess would be even better.

      IMPORTANT:
These laptops aren't for everyone. Gaming isn't its forte. I don't game other than playing some retro emulators like MAME and WinUAE, etc, and they all run fine. But don't expect Triple-A titles to run on it. But for a daily driver and what these things cost, it's an excellent product.

  • Why is it cheaper to get 1tb storage instead of 512 gb?

    • +2

I asked that in the Lenovo online chat and the agent just said it's a promo. I was fine with 512GB, just happened to see the 1TB offer there.

How much to upgrade to AMD?

  • +1

Has anyone gotten a full Linux install to run on these Snapdragon X SoCs?

    • I’m wondering as well
      Found this post https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-24-10-concept-snapdrag…
I’m excited to see an ARM base mini pc. I’d buy one as a home lab server

      • -1

If you want an ARM mini pc, just get a Raspberry Pi or an RK3588-based SBC and put it in a case.

    • Yes and no (mostly no with how much still doesn't work). See: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-24-10-concept-snapdrag…. Seems like OEMs aren't really coming to the party to help with hardware drivers and Qualcomm is also dragging their feet on a few promises they made.

    • +2

2025 is the year of the ARM linux desktop!

      • Desktop is stretching it a bit, but definitely would LOVE an ARM Linux laptop.
I have a M2 Pro MBP, and all I use it for is copious amounts of web-browsing with so many tabs and windows open that it never feels slow to use (of course I also have 32GB memory, but the swap space is great), as well as some light audio production, VDI (read: cloud desktop) with my local gaming desktop, AI and machine learning inference (with Ollama and a bunch of models, most recently Deepseek R1 and not the 671b model that is making Wall Street lose their singular brain cell) and some light gaming (e.g., modded Rivals of Aether).
The audio production can go, since Mac is the home of that, but if the next laptop can match the M4 Max in perf/W with a similar or better battery life under Linux and with LOW idle usage, my MBP will be replaced with it.
But I know it’s not going to happen for x86, so I only hope Qualcomm or someone else scales up mobile ARM to the same level Apple has while also coming with a Linux install. Windows doesn’t mean jack shit if it’s just BETTER than any other Windows laptop.

      • I got the joke. Well done.

  • +2

Hearing about the battery life and how cool these run sounds promising. As a cool laptop is a top priority for me.

Wish it was in a 15.6 inch screen though.

I want one for home use and 14 is just a teensy bit too small a screen for me. So I'll be waiting for something that suits me better.

Still wish I'd bought a Intel NUC M15 while they were still available as that would have been perfect for me needs

EDIT: Hmmm, they do have the Ideapad Slim 5 for only a couple of hundred more which also has a metal build…

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-5/len…

    • I have two monitors in the home, small screen is not a problem, it's good for traveling

  • The other one was 899 oled

  • Is the 32gb ram upgrade worth it for this?

    • Yes

  • If you plan to game, or any possibly for it, forget these. For me, that defeated the purpose of windows over a Mac.

  • Anyone used this with a couple of 4k external displays and a docking station?

    • Mine is connected to a single 4K display at 60 Hertz using a Lenovo usb-c doc.

  • What's the outlook for these things? Are they trying to compete with Intel and AMD? Is it all about battery life? Is it possible there will be a breakthrough in this technology eventually and it will take market share from Intel and AMD?

  • How much does it weigh? How many nits brightness? Is the screen high quality? I couldn't find this information in the description.

    • 14" WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 100%sRGB, 300 nits, 60Hz

      • -1

        300 nits. Aren't phones 1200 nits?

  • How does this compare to the other Lenovo Deal:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/890506

Cant make up my mind. Need it for browsing and Ms Office. No gaming. Maybe some video streaming.

    • +1

This one is slightly lighter and running a more efficient processor resulting in longer battery life. So based on your use case this may be a better buy but the other has a better chasis ? but without looking up close so hard to tell

      • +1

        Thank you 😊

    • Literally any modern laptop can browse and use ms office

      • You are right Netscape and Lotus 123 used to run on my IBM Thinkpad 760 too.

      • +1

But we want new and shiny things

  • +2

    Great price for 5 laptops
