      HELL (profanity) YEAH BABY!!

      Update: (Contract expires Dec 1 :( )

      • Damn, sorry :(

      • Hahaha mate I remember your comment on that other post! I’ve been waiting for this deal to land too!!

      • Just eat the break contract fee of 1 month, itll still be better than a $1100 gift card.

E: nvm guess its 2 months.

      • I had a similar kerfuffle. Just got a new number on e-sim and switch my normal number over to another cheapo 365 day provider on expiry (physical Sim). Have both Sims on the same phone. Doesn't make much difference.

      • profanity yeah

    • Wish I'd seen this earlier.

About to embark on nomadic travels around Australia soon.

Will need between 100gb to 200gb per month data plan.

Have an older phone, so having the voucher towards a new phone with 5g could have been very useful.

Anyone have a crystal ball and know when they are likely to have the next one of these?

Is that included or not included? By your formatting it looks like it's not included

    • Hi Charcoal. 5G Network access is included in this plan and the data can be shared between other JB Mobile services within the same account.

Your post would read better like this then:

          Yes confusing

  • +1

Does anyone know if you’re able to sign up to this if you’re already with Telstra or do you have to port your number to another provider and then sign up after the 30 days or whatever it is.

    • +2

You can sign up to a new mobile number and ask them to merge your current number to the new number and keep that new plan activated.
That's what I did two years ago during their Boxing day sale.

      • I did this 2 years ago as well. I tried again recently at 3 different JB HiFi stores and they said they couldn't do it anymore. Might try again tomorrow

        • same, it was a no when I asked last week

      • How does that "merge" work exactly? I'm currently on a Telstra plan and would like to take advantage of this.

        • -2

Call Telstra or go into a store or online chat. You'll have the most luck with younger knowledgeable staff.

JB plans show up as regular Telstra customers in their internal systems. It's not that staff CANT do it, most wont know how to or want to, since its wastes their time and makes no added money for Telstra or JB.

Staff at either place shouldn't be doing it, but there's nothing stopping them if they know how to work around Siebel.

          • +3

@Shak2093: These plans aren't even provisioned in siebel anymore for over a year. It doesn't work like that. It's not really possible without the risk of breaking a huge code of conduct. Don't waste your time or promote wasting time to other people

            • +2

@despavr: Swapping the owned/assigned number between two specific services on your own Telstra account between is a fire-able offense that breaks some sort of ToS/Code of Conduct?

EDIT- For a Telstra employee? Just noticed you're repping JB. Not sure if you can answer this? I've always done this the next day at a Telstra store.

(Old contract phone number = 123. New contract phone number = 456. Go into Telstra store and request "123" number be moved onto new contract, and "456" be moved to the old contract. Now old contract = 456, and new contract = 123).

              • +3

@CharcoaI: Ah, so this is how it's done. But can a Telstra employee swap a "JB" number with a Telstra number?
I know they are both being served by Telstra, but JB plans don't even show up under your Telstra account, anymore, and you're forced to use the JB plan app to have access to it (I know, I already have one).

                Thanks

            • -1

@despavr: Well if you think it's a waste of time then you're free to tell your customers whatever you'd like. I'm trying to help people get around stupid rules which only benefit the Telco. I don't work for JB or Telstra so i couldn't care less about what rules you have to follow as a staff member.

It is still very possible, as evidenced by the fact that i got a mate who still works for Telstra to do this exact thing for me less than a month ago, in store as well. The plans may not be provisioned in Siebel from your end, but all customers using the Telstra network still have a presence in the backend systems that can be messed with.

          • @Shak2093: Pretty sure Siebel system was changed over a year ago and system doesn't allow it anymore.

            • @PG57: You’re very strange. I’m here to tell you that JB Hi-Fi staff won’t do this for you. You’re free to go to Telstra. It’s sad that you have this disregard to people and their employment for the sake of your own benefit, You also provided misinformation and i corrected you (these plans are not processed through siebel etc). Don’t understand why you’ve got your panties in a twist now.

      • +2

people were fired for doing this. no you can't do this.

        • +2

You think these pagans care , no they don't !

    • +1

I ported out and in same day and got the voucher on the $1K version of this deal a couple of weeks ago. I used WW mobile and would pick another provider for that next time - got a $2 sim but they forced a $25 recharge to activate it.

      • How much was termination fee? $800 + $89?

        • Sorry, I didn’t terminate, I’m keeping the plan - I get reimbursed for a significant portion of my mobile spend.

      • Amaysim $2+$12 I think.

Just get a boost 365 day sim if you are mostly on wi-fi (benefit Telstra 5G).

      • +1

You didn't need to wait 30 days?

        • I didn’t. It processed all good on the same day.

      • I just tried the same trick, and it worked - eventually.

What I didn't expect was the outstanding ETC on the cancelled plan would prevent me from passing the credit check for the new plan! Managed to resolve it by paying it off once I understood that was the problem, but had to go through 4 different people at Telstra to get a straight answer that it was the problem. Credit checks are otherwise a complete black box as far as most of them are concerned :(

        • Headache lol.. what's your time worth?

          • @G-rig: Apparently, its worth $198.

I lodged a complaint and the resolutions officer gave me a refund direct on my credit card :p

Actually worked out to be a pretty sweet deal in the end: I had an email offer from Amaysim for $200 off any phone with a new service, and they had the Moto g54 on sale for $209. So I ported out to Amaysim on a $30 plan (less $3 cashback), got a $300 phone for $9, got a $1,200 gift card when I ported back in, and a $198 credit.

            300 + 1200 + 198 + 3 - 30 -9 - 734 = $934 profit! Plus the $1100 previous gift card. And work pays for my ridiculous phone plan ;)

            • @Dalryk: What's the first 300 you are including, bonus GC?

Nice rorting the system you should be able to buy a better phone then with all the profits.

              • @G-rig: 300 is the moto g54, which is going to my daughter for her birthday as a first phone (she is guaranteed to break it within 12 months ;)

                • @Dalryk: Looks like you counted it twice (198)

    • Doubt it. Last time I asked they said you have to be moving a non-telstra into telstra.

So annoying having to move out and back just for this. It's actually making me want to just buy outright and go with a cheap MVNO

  • Does anyone know if this will work with an Apple Watch cellular add on? I learned recently that JB plans are slightly different than standard Telstra plans these days.

    • +5

Hi Jake T. Telstra One Number is compatible with this plan. $5 extra per month.

      • Yep, did this myself, can confirm this works.

    • +1

For $5/month extra, I use number sharing with my Apple Watch on the JB plan.

    • I did this deal in 2022, and added the $5 esim to my watch via the Telstra app in 2023. Works fine.

  • Can this be used in a pocket wifi or a sim modem to replace NBN (currently 25/10)? Cheers

    • Yes

  • +8

Early termination fee for the 99 plan was $763 for me with the iPhone deal a week or two back. Don't think this will be any less unfortunately but in theory

    Sign up, pay 89 bucks
    Get 1200 voucher
Go to Telstra, cancel deal, pay 763 ETF, get 89 refunded

Almost 450 for freezies, fantastic if you were looking to buy a big ticket item at JB soon.

    • Can you provide some more detail on how this works? I’m $15 per month amaysim, wife is on Optus deal $89 a month or so mid-way through

      • First and formost, is the $15 dollar a months plan all you need now and is telstra coverage better on Telstra for you as this years iPhone should be called the AiDud! Also nows the time to track down a near new flipped iPhone15 for a nice discount (mines worth $815 to trade back to Vodafone in credit and I paid $1000)

But if it is what you want, yeah this is a good deal. The phones warranty is 2 years as is the plan. Its $1200 off the phone you pick, id recommend the base model and add iCloud $1.49 a month 50gb online storage option so factor that in with the $89 a month on top. You will probably get 3 months AppleTV for free, so check it out and binge it all in the three months! Thats 12.99x3=$39 saving that people overlook bonus!

Personaly I buy a good case and Ive never broken anything wile they have been looked after but the second you take it out of one, they are fking easy to do lots of expensive damage too but the 'added insurance' and excess is a scam. The phone basicly healvily marked up and all could drop 33% tomorrow and eveyone would still be in gravy even on the base model!

        • Can you explain more about this?

Also nows the time to track down a near new flipped iPhone15 for a nice discount (mines worth $815 to trade back to Vodafone in credit and I paid $1000)

          Thanks!

    • +12

Stuck with $1200 jb card vs having cash hmmm

    • is it cheaper to buy an iPhone 16 with the gift card and plan or outright + yearly prepaid is still better?

      • -6

Trade in your old iPad for one with a calculator, then get back to us to double check your figures.

      • +2

It depends on how much you’re currently paying for prepaid, and how much data you need.

After subtracting the voucher, this plan costs you the equivalent of $39 per month. That’s good value if you need 300GB, but if you currently pay less per month, and don’t need that much data, it’s not great value.

Other considerations are whether you’re happy to stay on a 24 month contract, and if not, if you have the cash on hand to buy the phone outright.

        Math: 89 * 24 = 2136 - 1200 = 936 / 24 = 39

        • Yeah don't know many people who would want to be on a two year contract and still have to buy a phone outright as well.

          • @G-rig: You get a $1200 voucher to cover most of the cost of the phone. You just effectively pay for that voucher over the contract via the high cost of the plan.

            • @Hargain Bunter: Yeah all the same, not a super deal if you cancel the plan (or if you keep it and don't need 300gb per month.

              • @G-rig: After reading through the comments: the real deal is signing up for the contract, getting the $1200 voucher, then cancelling it straight away and paying the $766 early termination fee.

                • +1

@Hargain Bunter: Yeah I know, the same loophole as before lol.
It's all in the previous two threads and all the same questions haha.

As I pointed out you only really make $434 and another credit check. Something for your time I guess.

    • +1

Is the ETF equivalent to the Voucher Repayment Fee outlined here?

    • -2

Don't see how this would work now…

The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of the base
Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months) remaining in your
Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-month Voucher Term, then in:
      (a) Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received;
      (b) Month 12: You will need to repay 11/24 of the Voucher you received; and
      (c) Month 23: You will need to repay 1/24 of the Voucher you received.

      • +2

Again same questions get asked lol

They don’t replace the gift card value in the CIS when you sign up. This remains at $800

        • CIS? Critical Information Summary? Again this

          • +4

@cryptos: Yes, it’ll be the $800 pro rata as they don’t replace that value to $1200 when you sign up

            You still get the $1200

        • Whats a CIS? So you mean to say you have to repay 23/24 of $800?

          • +5

            @nokidsandthreemoney: Costs:
            $89 first month of plan
            $767 voucher repayment fee (23/24 of $800)
            = $856

            ‘Reward’
$1200 JB Hi Fi gift card

            • +2

              @SirFrankGrimes: Yes it's a lot of effort to get a free $433
(Or $344 if you manage to get the $89 refunded), and you still don't get a handset.

If they actually amended the cis to match the voucher amount it would be totally pointless - not sure why they haven't after the last deal with the S24U & pixel 9 xl.

              • @G-rig: It's not so much ammending the piece of paper as it is updating the backend systems that support it all. And while it sounds easy enough in theory, Telstra almost certainly already has a giant backlog of "features" they need their custom-built platform to support, and this sort of thing probably isn't high priority.

                • @Dalryk: Yes so it's not in the CIS contract then don't worry. It's almost like the JB staff were trying to get you to sign and understand the printed piece of paper with the cis table but it isn't legally binding so just ignore.

        • But if you look at the image of the promo in OP it says "The $1200 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary"

          • @encryptededdy: Yes, but the voucher repayment fee doesn’t change

          • @encryptededdy: It may say that and they will tell you that but if it's not in the actual CIS table which forms part of the contract then it's irrelevant. You can also view the telstra contract from the app and it just says $800 (not $1200 or $1700 from the other deal).

    • What happens to the number you ported over from another carrier when cancelling this plan? Is there a way to keep it?

      • +1

Port to another service provider and pay $766 voucher repayment fee.

      • +5

if you are going to kill the plan, just don't port. get a new number.

    • So did you use the voucher before cancelling? I guess telstra cannot cancel the voucher right? Im looking to buy a phone, then cancel plan as described..

    • I though they stopped refunding the first month via Telstra/JB chat.

      • Depends who you get. Some will do it, others won’t. I’ve had far better luck on the Telstra chat

      • +2

        I went in store.

Did JB, walked across the road to Telstra. Cancelled the contract, paid the ETF. They said the 99 was still processing and if it doesn't get refunded in a couple days just come back in. Couldn't be stuffed going back in, did their online chat thing, spoke to someone for like 30 seconds and they were no wuckin' furries about it and processed the refund quicksmart, came through the next day.

        • Where do you need to pay the ETF.? Is it to Telstraor JB..?

    • -1

Of course a 1200 voucher is only worth 1080 or less in cash

      • How do you figure that out, you could buy something at JB with it for $1200 and even return it (but not for cash).

    • whats your trick to get $89 refunded ?

    • I bought iPad with a similar deal but the first month wasn’t refunded :(

    • -1

can you get 89 refund ? i thought not

      • So you want a mobile plan or not lol

    • +1

      but isn't 1200-763=437

437 is close to 440 not 450 right

      • +2

Some people need a phone with a calculator hey

      • 440 is close to 450 right?

I wouldn't round up to 440, sounds weird. I'd either say the exact thing or round up to the next notable increment, in this case, 450.

But I also used a 10 buck Perks voucher when I paid for the iPhone so my memory is skewed ever so slightly that extra tenner.

        • 440 is close to 450 right?
I wouldn't round up to 440, sounds weird. I'd either say the exact thing or round up to the next notable increment, in this case, 450.

Well if you keep going like this you round 450 into 500 but apparently 437 is not going to be rounded as 500

But I also used a 10 buck Perks voucher when I paid for the iPhone so my memory is skewed ever so slightly that extra tenner.

I believe this is the true reason of thinking 437 as 450. I've never seen anyone rounds 43x into 450 so far in business

  • +1

costs $39 per month after you pay for the $1200 gift card….

    • +1

But no one pays full value for JB Hi-Fi gift cards, so the formula needs to be adjusted

  • Does anyone know if the 30 days period applies to only tesltra sim or boost as well ? I port out of Telstra a month back to boost and from boost to amaysim a week back.

    • I ported Boost to Optus yesterday night and back to Telstra/JB this afternoon. No issue.

  • +15

FYI - I created a FAQ for those JB qus
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866578

  • -1

For everyone trying to get this and cancel for the free cash, the T&C's seem to say you've got to repay the entire voucher cost. I'm not understanding how you're going to get any amount for free if the entire voucher has to be repaid?
