Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra 256GB $487 ($1700 off) + $300 Giftcard on JB Hi-Fi Mobile $99/M 24M SIM Plan @ JB Hi-Fi (in-Store)

2760

Credits to JinTheGod for discovering this via the similar deal for Pixel 9 Pro XL here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866174

As confirmed in the previous JB Telstra cancellation deals , the cancellation cost would be $766.59 + $99 for the first month fee
Hence the total cost would be $766.59+$99+$2187-$1700 = $1352.59 for the 256GB Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
In addition to the above, JB is throwing in an extra $300 Bonus Giftcard for this sign up, bringing the cost down to $1052.59

Not bad if you're eyeing the S24U and don't mind exploiting the cancellation loophole.

EDIT: for those who are with Telstra, you might have an opportunity to bring the price lower by asking JB to price match Telstra store.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15703584/redir

As quoted, by ShinyDiamond
"I spoke to Jbhifi Melbourne Central, they mentioned they can price match Telstra if I show then in store that I have an active Telstra account. Telstra 256gb is $1899 vs $2187 at jbhifi. They agreed to price match this price.

256gb price = $1899 - $1700 + $99 + $766 = $1064 and $300 gift card"

Clearly you didn't even read the post

Your opinion is its a bad deal because of the 99 per month for 2 years but the deal posted in here is including canceling the plan

    • What plan is for $15 using Telstra network?

        • +31

That effort isn't worth it for some people

          • -7

@TheFreaK: I admit it but it saves me lot of money and I always get Telstra netwrok and everytime. They ported my sim in 4 hours.

            • +7

@Avi0001: Cheapest Boost 12 month deal works out to <$20 per month not including any cashback deals or specials you may get it at.

I'd rather pay the $5 extra not to have to deal with having to cancel a sim, buy a new one and port a number every month.

              • @TheFreaK: lol @Avi0001…I don't think anyone in this thread cares about the Telstra plan

              • @TheFreaK: I did not get the same amount of Internet Data on annual plans.

              • +2

@TheFreaK: Yes what a pain, having to set up a new sim every month for two years is ridiculous, just get a 365d Boost Sim, I'm on me forth and 140gb or whatever is heaps(wifi home+work).

Anyway sounds like I risk these kinds of hacks in the event you can't cancel your 2y contract straight away and would anyone actually get an s24 over a pixel now? May as well get a top model iPhone if these are almost as much.

                • +3

@G-rig: Better than iPhones in a couple of ways though-
                  - 3x to 5x zoom is better,
                  - longer software support (this sounds absurd, I know, but the roles reversed regarding software the start of this year)
                  - faster charging
                  - an S-Pen
                  - the benefits of Android, like:

                  • Customisability
                  • Freedom
                  • More privacy*
                  • Ability to actually use the desktop-class performance you get to its fullest through apps like DeX and Termux

                  Cons
                  - will be ever so slightly less optimised for some apps (conversely though, theres some apps that are better on Android)
                  - iPhones do take slightly better videos
                  - The drawbacks of android:

                  • mainly the fact that it will be ever so slightly prone to crashes
                  • if you're in a social circle which absolutely loves iMessage then get better friends you'll have to get an iPhone.

*iPhone is slightly more private than android by default, but on android you have the freedom to get rid of Google for a massive increase in your privacy. I personally use Proton mail.

@LilSlip: With Samsung Dex, the phones are basically laptops with an external monitor.

                    • +1

@smartProverble: Yep, makes them so much more usable down the line if in like ~5 years the phone breaks and you can't get a replacement screen.

Or you can install what amounts to a lite version of linux on them and use them as software development toolboxes
Or you can connect them to a TV and emulate some games

There's just so much more you can do with the phone even after its usable life span is over

                  • +3

                    @LilSlip:

                    • I can't remember the last time my S21U crashed.
                    • Wrt to privacy, unless you have reasons to be an ultra-private person, e.g: :you work as a detective, or have millions on investments, and so forth, Android is private enough as long as you keep the OS updated.
If the concern is behaviour tracking, the way to go is to browse using a browser that doesn't allow tracking or ads, eg: Brave. And also uninstall apps that track usage, eg: FB, TT, IG, etc. Android is not the issue, as using those apps on iPhone to browse has the same issues. I know for a fact that when I talk with friends about something new (I haven't do a search on my phone at all about the subject), FB is listening and starts to suggest to me and the other person (as long as we are FB friends) posts related to the conversation we just had - this is insane and it happens.
                    • With regards to better videos, I can understand this is an issue for content creators…
                    • +1

                      @Potatohead82: About the S21 Ultra

                      • Fair enough, mine was pretty stable too till I cracked the screen. Now its running a docker container lol.
I really just wanted to add the part about stability just because you hear the anecdote fairly often

And regarding your point about updating the OS:

                      • I think you're confusing privacy and security. Updating the OS will make it more secure, yes, but not more private; ultimately Google services are still running on your device harvesting information. I agree with your recommendation on a good browser (use Mull myself) and getting rid of ads and invasive apps, but Google's services inherently do track you more than iPhone does by default: a study that found that Google takes about 20 times more data than IOS. Google disputes this and says it's 'only' 2x more though so take it with a grain of salt.
Sidenote, I'm still not convinced on the 'Facebook is actively listening to you' part, I think it's more that they simply know what your friends are interested in, know that you're close together through nearby Wifi SSID's and then infer that you may have talked about something your friend is interested in.

Also, completely agree with the content creator issue, huge missed opportunity from Samsung that they don't offer Log or an alternative to ProRes.

@TheFreaK: Or amaysim $120 365days plan . (Optus network though)

          • +2

@TheFreaK: surprised it's worth it for anyone

          • +1

@TheFreaK: Too much time and effort. Most people would figure their time is worth more than the potential savings at play. Years ago when you’d get $30 credit to spend on the google play store from these sim packs it was worth doing though. ;)

          • @TheFreaK: not worth it for 99.9% of people

      • Woolworths 365 day long expiry plan. I'm on it.
Works out to be $14/month 10gb /month. But I think that plan is now no longer for new subs.

    • +3

It's not bad if you want the phone and can use the data. 300GB is enough that it could replace NBN for some people (although it's annoying to have to tether that much).

You have to pay $2,563 over 2 years (assuming the $300GC is worth getting also), but remember it includes a $2,187 phone, so the plan costs less than $400 on top of the phone. Whereas at $15 for 28 days you're paying $390 over 2 years anyway.

Even the best pricing for this phone recently through the samsung edu portal was about $1,700, so the phone plan is about $35 a month for 300GB on telstra. That's not bad pricing.

      • +1

Even better if you can claim your plan cost and the phone cost as work expense in tax return.

      • -1

There is no "cancellation loophole". Whoever has signed up for this are going to quickly find out that they have just paid almost $4k for a mobile phone.

        • You can very easily see for yourself in their T&Cs.

  • Can this be further reduced via price match?

    • This is what I am wondering.

      • +4

I asked in the Perth city store on Wednesday and was told they would not price match with this deal, unfortunately. I was trying to price match with Amazon which currently has them for $1699.

I'm sure, as is often the case, you might have a different experience at another store.

        • Isn't the Amazon one is sold by third party instead of Amazon which nullifies the price match?

          • +1

@keepsmiling: The JB bloke said they would price match it for me, just not with $1700 off plan deal. Don't know the ins and outs but I just said it was $1699 on Amazon and he said yep they do price match them.

Here's the link if you're interested. Looks like the Samsung store on Amazon.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra AI Smartphone, 12GB RAM 256GB, Titanium Grey https://amzn.asia/d/8SbIJ83

            • @Plava: This was showing Amazon's choice and "Visit Samsung Store" so I asked JB HiFi customer support for a price match. The guy replied with a lol + mentioned that they've watch-listed this seller coz the trading address is residential

    • +2
      • +1

Did this work for you? I guess you could only use $199 of the $300 gift card towards the phone, leaving you with $101 on the gift card.

        Out pocket cash would be:
        1899 - 1700 - 199 + 766.59 + 99 = $865. 59 and have $101 remaining on a JB gift card?

Sounds too good to be true.

        • +1

I think they ll give you $300 voucher after phone purchase, not before.

          • @dealhunting007: Thats correct. They issue the gift card after the purchase of the phone.

      • @udyz did you try to cancel the plan? how much did you need to pay back?

        • Thats something I need to check.

        • Yes, successfully cancelled.
          Early Termination payment was $766.66

      • When did they started price matching Telstra?? 🤔(Telstra requires Telstra Id)

  • -5

Yeah but this doesn't actually work, does it?

    • Why not? it worked on the pixel

      • +2

Yeah but I heard they patched up the loophole within a few days after they noticed a huge surge in cancellations…

        • +2

If you're talking about the last year Harvey Norman Optus deal for Pixel 8 Pro, then yes they have made some changes to the cancellation terms

As for the JB Hi Fi mobile plan by telstra, I'm not sure if it has been patched as the CIS still mention $800 for the max repayment. Reason being Telstra only see $800 in their system and any cancellations will refer to that.

If anyone has any update on this, I would love to know

          • +3

@evilhomura89: JB staff was the one who recommended me to do the loophole when I was looking to buy an iphone a week ago (it was a $1100 gift card deal). I’d assume it’s still not patched, and probably wouldn’t be if staff are actively recommending this method unprompted.

            • @jpeg-jpg: How long after signup do we cancel?

              • +1

@XucCac: Staff recommends just doing the whole month before cancelling cause you do get a reduction on the penalty the later you cancel, plus you already got that $99 plan you can take advantage of.

If you want to cancel ASAP they recommend a minimum of 3 days, though theoretically you can cancel the next day. Just can’t cancel on the same day.

                • @jpeg-jpg: Interesting, did they explain what reduction on the penalty is this referring to?

                  • @BargainsGrabber: iirc the math goes like this:

                    24 months = 730 days
Penalty reduction each day is $800/730 = ~$1.09
                    Penalty reduction after a month: $1.09*30 = ~$32.7

                    Total penalty you pay after a month: $800 - $32.7 = $767.3

I could be wrong, I'd recheck with staff about the math.

                • @jpeg-jpg: Can definitely cancel same day. I bought the s24+ and cancelled like within a few hours. Just paying termination fee

          • @evilhomura89: Would this pixel fold deal have same cancellation cost?
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866164#comment-15699972

            • @Kanjus: If the CIS remains the same for the $99 JB Hi-Fi mobile plan, then yes the cancellation cost would be the same

        • what's the loophole? as far as I understand…$800 off is Telstra standard for JB plans…. the "extra" $900 to make it $1700 (+$300 bonus gift card) is JB/manufacturer bearing the cost… So this is all above board afaik?

        • It's been a thing for years. Did it earlier this year for the Ipad Pro M4 along with many others. A former customer service rep posted further info about how it works for JB Hifi too

        • +1

patched up the loophole within a few days after they noticed a huge surge in cancellations

Who and where did they tell you this?

I signed up to the pixel deal too and I’ve a screenshot of the JB Mobile chat that said my cancellation fee is $766.59

  • How much it'll be for 1tb storage?

  • +3

Confirmed with Jbhifi, they will price match any Australian Retailer to bring down the price (not grey imports: Kogan, catch, Becextech…..)

Plus you will get $300 gift card on top.

    • +1

Can anyone confirm this? Few here said price match doesn't work.
The phone is currently $1699.99 on Amazon, Samsung store

      • +1

Not sold by Amazon, hence, I was told that they can't price match.

        • +1

Yes they don't price match third party sold products

    • +1

      Can confirm.

Yes, just price matched Telstra - $1899
      Plus $300 JB gift card

  • +1

Is the website being bombed? I loaded into a semi-dead link but their $30 sign up popup came up..

  • So what are the actual steps to harnessing this deal? I cannot see any instructions on the jbhifi website?

    • +5

Go in store and ask for the JB Hi Fi mobile upfront plan together with the phone
Sign up, pay the $99 and $487 difference, go home and then cancel the plan from your Telstra app

      • cancel the plan from your Telstra app

Cancel the plan now on the JB Hi Fi Mobile app.

        • Is it really that simple to cancel directly from the app? Also, I assume getting a new number would make the process a lot simpler, right?

          • @Pinchme: It takes 5 minutes to cancel via JB HIFI app chat.
New number or you'll need to port out your number instead of cancelling, otherwise you'll lose your number straight away.

          • @Pinchme: Yes, you can port out your number or cancel the service from within the app's chat.

  • Will this work if i'm on Telstra currently. Doesn't explicitly say port in only, that i could see.

    • +2

If you're on Telstra, it could be to your advantage since u don't have to pay the $99 upfront, just sign up for a new number and then cancel it
Depending on your billing date, you'll be paying only $487+$800 only since you're cancelling before the first billing

        1. Available to port-in and new customers only (excluding JB Upfront/Prepaid, The Good Guys Mobile & Broadband, Telstra & Boost).
        • +5

A new number should be considered as new sign up if I'm not mistaken

    • +1

Nevermind. I see it now in the fine print. I need to get off Telstra in preparation for these deals. Seems like a good deal even keeping the phone and plan. I'm paying $75 a month now, stupidly. Getting the phone even at $1200 is $50 a month over 24months. Not many plans for $25 with a decent amount of data on Telstra.

      • Does anyone know if there is a time limit on being away from Telstra first? i.e. can i port to Optus today and go in tomorrow?

        • +2

You don't have to port out or use your current number. Get a new number and it will be considered as a new customer for this deal.

    • +1

I signed up to this plan yesterday. I was with Boost Pre-paid (Telstra), purchased a $2 Optus Sim, ported over to Optus in about 5 mins, then went in store to sign up to Telstra at The Good Guys and 5 mins later was back on Telstra. Mind you this was a weekday, so not sure how instant it is on the weekend, probably is though.

Comment and post are 2 diff things.

    • Should have posted as a deal

  • +3

Also, they won't price match AND do this deal. Have tried a couple times, think you're pretty lucky if you've found a staff member that does both!

  • Can I use the $1700 and $300 voucher from this scheme to pay back when I cancel the plan? Or, do I need to pay that as cash separately and I will be left with vouchers?

  • Can someone please help me understand how to do this deal? I was really trying to grab a 24 ultra for a cheap price after breaking my phone couple of weeks back. If so would be much appreciated, thanks.

    • +3

Go in store, sign contract, get phone, cancel contract.

      • +3

How much do I have to pay upfront? So I would be getting the JB Hi Fi mobile upfront plan together with the phone. Sign up, and then cancel on the JB Hi Fi app or Telstra after I get back home?

        • +2

          Upfront cost is $487.

Upon cancellation anytime in the first month: $766.59 + $99

          Yep pretty much.

          • +1

@lawyerz: And it is the $99 for 300gb upfront plan with JB Hi Fi am I correct? Sorry for all the question, am new to all this.

            • +5

@Suvi36: Yep, $99 for the first month cost.

No prob with questions, this is a high effort deal. I had the same questions when I did this with my pixel 8 pro.

  • +21

Shouldn't the title say the cost is $1352.59 and not $487. Price in total is meant to be total after any fees and taxes but before any rebates (eg a gift card). So it should include the cancellation fee.

  • +2

The $300 bonus gift card is the bit that prob makes this deal. Was $1405 just a few days ago for the 512gb

    https://www.pictr.com/images/2024/09/13/xmfhAJ.png

And just needed any Westpac acc to get access to this price. Deal ended early though.

  • +2

Is the $1700 characterised as a voucher? Or do they just straight up reduce the price of the phone?
Are there loopholes where you can end up with a $1700 voucher and a $300 voucher without a phone, and only pay $800 ETC?
