    Dark Mode…kekekeke..

    • Requested about a zillion times already. There are some prerequisites that need be implemented / fixed first — no guarantee when that will get started.

    • +10

You can use "Dark Reader" add-on for Firefox. Works on Firefox for Android. I am using it to get Dark mode everywhere including OzB.

      Sample: Screenshot

      • Yeah I'm using Dark Reader on Chrome (desktop), it's awesome.

    • Samsungs browser does dark mode..

  • +12

    Mobile app…

    … just kidding.

    • It might actually come this year — a simple app that just wraps around the mobile site.

      • +60

        App with dark mode… micdrop

      • +1

I think there already is one. Even has push notifications

        • Yes there are already many unofficial apps with various level of functionalities, and for a long time we do not think we actually need an app because the mobile site is doing fine.

However at the moment we might be forced to have a simpler official app on the app store / play store as "defence mechanism" against others claiming to be OzBargain.

      • Progressive Web App?

      • +17

Please don't make the app a mandatory choice when using a mobile.
I hate it when a site functions perfectly on a desktop site, but then says that you must use an app on mobile.
I am not going to download more bloat that eats my battery and data.
OzB mobile site is perfect as it is.

        • +9

There are few things I hate in life. This is one of them.

          • +2

@peterpeterpumpkin: And then "Request Desktop Site" doesn't do anything to help.

            • +1

@Blue Cat: Fricking device sniffing sites are the pits. Almost nothing can be done about them on a non-jailbroken Apple device. (Short of running your own proxy server or remote browser.)

Yahoo Mail is my peeve hate - can't create a disposable address for it (or access a lot of other functionality) on an Apple device, even using their own app! Simply because some idiot has decided that you shall not use desktop mode on a mobile device. They might have a very weak justification for this for a small screen phone (provided the app allows access to all the functions), but for a large display device like an iPad? Come on!

              • +1

@robinCTS: Yes, this is the worst! When you access it on mobile, they force you to download the app, but the app is gimped anyway so you can't even use the features you find on a desktop site!

      • +1

As a developer I'd be interested in making this in Flutter. It's a lot easier to make an app that wraps the ozbargain site but it could look a lot prettier than that and potentially be more user friendly.

Just my 2c (although if there's any interest in this, hit me up)

April 1st suggestion - Site rebrand to OzLegalissues.com.au

And I'll take kudos for the idea.

If you delete this comment, we'll I'll know it's on the cards

    • -1

      Site rebrand to OzLegalissues.com.au

It won’t be possible to have that URL though…

      • Why not?

        • -1

.com.au domains require an ABN meaning Scott would have to buy the business name “OzLegalissues” (if it available) meaning it would cost a lot.

          • +1

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Don't need to actually buy the domain, or redirect.

It's not difficult to say "we've rebranded, soon we'll have this domain specifically for our forums"

          • -1

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: All those rules sadly went away when domainers took control of auda.

    • OzNoInsurance.com.au?

This was posted in the previous thread as well.

    Multiple Users Per Household Account

I think there should be the ability to have multiple accounts per household OR 1 account with multiple users (example: like the Netflix login page) where each user can set a pin/password. All accounts within the household won’t be able to vote on each other’s comments, deals, etc. with a limit of 4 users per account.

    • multiple accounts per household

      We do allow that.

      1 account with multiple users

We know some people do that (especially brands / stores) however we do not recommend that. The general rule is — one account per individual. Unlike Netflix accounts — OzBargain accounts don't cost you anything. Therefore I do not see the point of multiple individuals using the same account.

The discussions from the previous thread got dragged on, and I do not wish to continue here as it's pointless IMHO.

      • We do allow that.

Oh, I did not know that, thanks for your response.

The discussions from the previous thread got dragged on, and I do not wish to continue here as it's pointless IMHO.

        I agree,

Ability to link with Android auto / Apple car play to audibly readout new posts while I am driving.

Then I can make a decision whether to pull over and review further.

    • +1

I just use Google Glass for this while driving.

    • Or just have the web wrapped app added in so we can scroll through and browse. :)

    • +2

Then I can make a decision whether to pull over and review further.

I'm sure the team can get some sort of text to voice thing going to read out the top voted comments/reviews, then you can ask Siri/Google Assistant to find a store with stock and start navigation to take you there.

      • +1

You're living in 2030 while the rest of us are in 2020.. next will be to use Tesla's autopilot to go and pickup the stock without even having to be in the car!

  • +20

A reviews page, everytime I need to get something I have to search previous deal posts and read the comments.

  • +25

Negsplanation would be cool - a dropdown menu of why you are downvoting someone.

    eg:
    The comment is rude
    The comment hurt my feelings
The comment called me out for my BS
The comment was made by someone I dislike
The comment only said "bikies" and I don't understand why

    etc.

    • +28

The comment was made by someone I dislike

      99% of negs lol

      • +22

        More like:

        Comment was made by jv.

        • +6
          • The comment went over my head
          • The comment triggered my outrage
          • The comment challenged my erroneous knowledge
          • The comment was right, but I don’t like the reality of it
          • The comment already had 8 negs. I didn’t read it, but voters must be right.

Can’t we just get rid of neg votes on comments. Leave it for Reddit. I have seen some of the best and most correct comments get downvoted to oblivion because of the neg sheep.

Or, if they are to stay, you can’t leave a neg comment on a post you don’t reply to, the same as deals.

And while we are at it, if we are not going to get rid of comment votes, why can’t we upvote and downvote forum threads?

          • @pegaxs: Can you give an example?

            • +1

@ozbd: Yeah, any E10 fuel thread.

              • +1

@pegaxs: Anti-science is too common here but I dont agree with no negs, maybe a time limit say half hour before votes come in. Let the discussion foster without votes.

                • +1

@abuch47: Or maybe not showing a comments votes until a user votes on it themselves. Then, after they have voted, they can see what the voting pattern is like. Not just "OMG! NeGz!! Here, have another!!!"

                  • @pegaxs: Yeah but then there is no point to voting. As the sole purpose is to grade comments. Reddit does this better than ozb

                    • @abuch47: I was just trying to come up with a way to remove "sheep" votes, as I think that is the biggest issue with the current voting system. People on here tend to drop negs because they see negs. Often it has nothing to do with the factual in/correctness or useful/uselessness of the comment and was born more out of someone's spite for another user proving them wrong or just for having a different opinion.

I don't really know a "works for everybody" solution, but I am always working on it. I just know that the current system, while well intentioned, is broken.

The other problem is, we definitely do need neg votes, because there are same absolute dumb-arse things that get posted that need to be down-voted to oblivion, but it should not be at the cost of someone getting negged to hell based on nothing more than a personal grudge.

        • +2

So… Are you implying "everyone dislikes jv", or are you saying "jv posts 99% of the comments so jv garners 99% of the negs"? 😉

          • @robinCTS: jv seems to be on the leaderboard most months for “Most Disliked Comment” so I’m guessing jv gets most the negs…

      • +2

More like I jumped on the neg wagon with the other neg Lemmings.

Is there a way to get notified when a particular product gets posted as a deal? I've only managed to get store/user notifications but only can put the 'want, have, had' thingy on the product. I've missed quite a few deals for some stuff because I only go on Ozbargain after baby goes to sleep 😢

    • Right now the closest thing is search alert, which is sent out once an hour, keyword-matching the posts from previous hour.

      • I think when you search a product there is options like if you want or had. I think if we make it want then we get notifications for that product

      • How about a watch for city and a separate one for limited time deals < 24 hours .

        • and a watch for products as well.

      • @scotty Is it possible to send search alert email straight away rather than hourly. You would missout on the deal if you check it after and hr.

        • It would be easier if alert is triggered by simple keywords but we have to support the full search syntax so has to go through our search engine backend, where the index is only re-generated once an hour (a relative intense process).

  • Any way to delete all or selected messages in Massages > Conversations > Trash? I had a look and couldn't see any option other than move. Since I have old deleted messages that I'm never going to look at again dating back to 2013 I want to permanently delete.

  • +6

At the top of the page, could there be a link to "Jump to next new comment" which works like an anchor? Saves scrolling down and scanning the page for the new comment marker.

  • +9

Before a new user can post a new post on the forum, they need to have contributed to the site in some way. Been a member for X amount of time. Have made at least X amount of comments and/or have a 0 or positive vote count in that time.

So many trolls come here and post useless, community inflaming rubbish and are never seen again or who don’t even have the decency to reply to their own thread or never update with an outcome after receiving the help. So these threads are pointless anyway.

I know we want to be inclusive, but these people who sign up to post one question and then vanish into the neversphere are not being inclusive anyway.

    • +3

If people do not respond to the post, it will just get buried. In contrast, I posted few practical questions, but only got one or two responses most of the time. So people do like the trolls may be because they are entertaining.

    1. Improved search for classifieds
    2. Sorting by number of votes when viewing deals by store or product
    3. Easier way to find the lowest price ever recorded given a specific product/model
    • +1

Historical lowest price, like CamelCamelCamel would be amazing, but I think it would make deal submitting harder, as the OP would need to tag the exact product model etc.

      • I think it would make deal submitting harder, as the OP would need to tag the exact product model etc.

Not so. Doesn't matter how much you "encourage" posters to correctly tag deals, a lot will continue do just what they do now, and not tag correctly or at all. It's always been up to the moderators and us power users to correct the deals.

        Could be a useful feature.

    • Price Hipster has some of the functionality of point 3 for some stores (major australian retailers and online stores eg coles, woolies, jbhifi etc)

      • Exactly. Only some stores. And Camel3x only for Amazon. Furthermore, not every items in that stores are recorded.
OzBargain has more variety and wide range of stores/items.

  • Complete ground up redesign of the frontend whilst implementing existing design features to bridge the gap between old and new and being careful not to stray too far away from the original layout concept.

    • +1

What are you suggesting this will achieve? (Genuinely curious what upside you're seeing here over other suggestions)

    • Complete ground up redesign …
      implementing existing design features …
not to stray too far away from the original layout …

Sounds like a lot of work for not much gain. Sorry we don't have enough resource for this type of over-engineering.

  • +6

If would be good to have an option to repost old deals.

Quite often expired deals come up again that are exactly the same (or extremely similar) Could be cool to have an option to “repost” expired deals that have come up again - obviously under the new users account. Perhaps it just automatically copies the old deal and it’s information in a new post for editing.

For example, deals by TM Lewin are usually the same and it would be nice if users could repost old posts with comprehensive information.

    • +3

And a duplicate button so you can change a little around and post it.

      • +1

        Yes. That was my thinking.

Plus. It could mention it’s a repost and provide a link to the old deal. This would be useful and often the comments have often asked questions.

        • +1

Or maybe when a deal goes from out of stock or expired to being back it can be in new deals again like a new post so more people can see it.

  • +7

Security notices for publicly breached merchants.

E.g. if haveibeenpwned published a new breach, any affected websites are flagged here on ozb. Any deals posted will have a big red notice informing users that there might be an issue.

It's a bit of work tying the databases/data-feeds together but highly valuable imo.

  • +14

A button that you can say I've followed through with this deal as a legit purchaser.

    • +2

Downvoting the sh-t out of this. I don't want to know how much I am spending on bargains. It would completely shatter every thought I have of this being an exercise in frugality.

    • Great idea. I like this in that, you can see who's brought an item and get feedback here directly rather than some fake reviews online.

Only because the ozb community is like family (weirdos and all) but my family.

On the otherhand, would be bad for marketing/spamming by dodgies.

      • Except majority of the people using this site dont login or have an account, i would like to see that enforced to some degree.

        • i would like to see that enforced to some degree.

As in forcing people to make an account?

          • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: have an account and be logged in to see the deals / bargains. At least this way there is more chance they will partake in the community and not be a hit and run, which i think may play more with brodens.

    • I like this idea quite a bit because positive votes don’t necessarily translate to actual purchases. I’ve come across deals which get upvoted because it’s a good price and then see comments asking if anyone actually got the item at that price.

Would be nice to know how attainable some of these deals are so you can decide whether it’s worth the effort, especially when you need to physically go to stores.

I can remember the good ol' days when 69¢/L was the good bargain and 50¢/L was when you bought it by the pallet load! Nowadays it's rare to see it even at $1.

      • I remember when petrol was cheaper per litre than milk. 8(

    • The group buy idea isn't bad - @tightarse used to do a few arranged voucher codes from memory which is a similar concept without having the make sure everyone goes through with the purchase.

Have "Top Community Initiatives" section on the right of the page similar to "New Competitions" to allow people present the causes and get help as a way to give back and help out. We do great with posting rebates and grants for people affected by the current fire disaster but there is so much more potential. I know it is OZBargain, but finding a way to help someone together is similarly rewarding as finding a new deal and sharing it.

We have so much talent and great people here as I can often see by some of the posts, I am sure there is amazing untapped potential to bring people together and make world a little better while enjoying a good deal.

Auction that spot off to the highest bidder and only allow it for very good bargains only

      So many issues there.

      1) What is your definition for 'very good bargains only'? There's enough heated discussion as to what even constitutes a bargain (see here for the latest example)

      2) OzBargain would no longer be the community that discovers and shares bargains if companies can just pay their way to be front and centre on the site.

Calm down on the micro management from mods. Go check the revisions on the front page, 50-60% have been revised by mods for the silliest things.

Mods constantly change titles, add edits into the deal with their own blurb. This is a community, if you want to go around editing posts changing minor things on titles like a capital letter, or re-word it so it looks a little more sexy then post the deals yourself. Why do you need the community?

Mods are editing deals to change or add tags. Why? The search feature is terrible you hardly get to the most relivant option without going 3-4 pages deep anyway, as if adding an extra word into the tags changes the entire issue with the search.

It’s next level the lengths these mods are going to, just calm down.

    • +6

Most of the edits were probably done by Power Users, and they do it to keep the site clean.

Not sure how it affects you, if they're editing to make it nicer so it doesn't become a shambles? It's their time and effort, not yours

This change on your post, took out the mods edit to link back and credit the original poster, yet you felt the need to remove it… why?

When revoking a vote on a deal generally from an accidental click from mobile.

In terms of the “accidental click” this happens to me a bit as well, it would be good if there was an extra pop-up that said “Are you sure” OR a checkbox next to the revoke button (meaning you have to click the checkbox before you can click the revoke button) would be nice.

it also removes that deal from your voted deals.

Correct, once you “remove” your vote that registers as a deal not voted on meaning it will not show up in your voted deals.

About the referrer, not sure if it is pure random or can it add in place some fair rule that no one gets picked up twice until everyone in the pool get picked at least once?

    • Random referrals are weighted to those who are active on the site. e.g. Someone who signs up to an account, puts their referral in, then never signs back in would get weighted less. We will be implementing a sorting to use least used referral for referrals that have limited uses per referral for stores that have this limitation. e.g. A store's referral system only allows a person to refer a maximum of 5 people.

I think a lot of good deals for products not popular with the primary Ozbargain demographic often don't make the front page and attract reasonable attention.

Deals on women's shoes (or women's anything) for example. A way to highlight these quality deals that don't attract the same upvotes as the usual Eneloops or SD cards would be nice.

Negsplanation would be cool - a dropdown menu of why you are downvoting someone.

    A variation of this…
    Negvotesplanation would be good too.
These "hear hear" lets drive-by negs go through too easily, at least it would give some justification to why a neg vote was cast against a deal.

    • Aye! 🙋‍♂️

The ability to get cashback directly from the link on ozb - its a pain to have to jump multiple links and login in to a cash back to get a deal

Is there a way to tick a cashback service and then click the ozb link

Maybe this also opens the opportunity to have a strategic relationship for ozb to take a bit of the revenue for cashback services or create a cashback of its own

    • Maybe this also opens the opportunity to have a strategic relationship for ozb to take a bit of the revenue for cashback services or create a cashback of its own

OzBargain already serves affiliate links on deals for guests and signed out users. No point over complicating something that already works and wouldn't get off the ground.

      • Why wouldn't it get off the ground?

        • Why would cashback companies want to pay OzBargain? It just seems pointless to save a few clicks.

          • @Clear: As a user I would value the convenience
As a cash back provider they may gain more clicks which has value

    • That would be too close the relationship between OzBargain and the cashback sites to my liking. I believe the fraud detection process on cashback sites would also make it difficult. OzBargain has supported half a dozen cashback providers over the years, and I've actually suggested this when PricePal was MoneyBackCo — however the amount of data exchange required makes me uncomfortable.

Afterall I believe cashback sites have already provided a lot of convenience — browser extensions and apps etc.

There are some pretty obvious troll comments, normally they are top voted and sticks out the most, more than genuinely helpful comments. comments like bikies, what did x say when you asked them? They generally do not, not meet commenting guidelines

    • -1

in more peaceful times, circa December 2012, all neg votes must fall in either of the 3 category

      • found item cheaper elsewhere, Site X linked here
      • the product supplier is shoddy eg fraudulent, no business details etc
      • the product is faulty, dangerous, very badly made etc

all other neg votes were invalid, and thus revoked

      and it was good.

Flash forward to 2020, the deal pages are an absolute wreck, filled with bandwagon negative votes based on the most random "ethical" justification and the comment pages are filled with virtue signalling numpties.
Sorry to say, I think the site owner & head admin here are reaping what they sow.

      • It was getting too time consuming and too inconsistent for moderators to decide whether a negative vote is valid or not. We aren't experts at everything. When we didn't remove votes, people complained. When we did remove votes, people complained. Many times it's a grey area. So we came up with a list of reasons that are invalid. Voting Guidelines. Negative voting has never worked well but it's probably at the best it's going to get, which is not great.

Opinions are always welcome on Ozbargain but we ask that users refrain from attacking others for their opinion and try to be respectful to each other.

        • What about just have no restrictions on negative votes but limit it to 3/day and still allow the community to revoke.

        • hi neil,
I take back the 2nd part of the comment then

all other neg votes were invalid and thus revoked

thus revocation is up to the community (intervention not required) but at least the rules/basis for Neg Votes are tightened so there should be less occurrence of people massively neg bombing any deal page they don't like.

  • Can you have a page with cheap international prices paid. Many ozbargainers travel OS and purchase products from duty free for example. I think it would be useful to have a updated page with the cheapest prices with dates purchased on a particular product ie watches, alcohol, perfume etc. If an ozbargainer is travelling they can purchase OS or at least make a fair comparison with an Australian product.

  • As a user, I would like to filter out posts mentioning Australian states that I'm not interested in, so I can see only relevant posts and posts that do not mention a state at all.

Sorry if this is possible already - I've not seen this feature.

    • +1

This is already possible provided the deals have the correct title tags. (This is one of the things the Moderators and us Power Users fix, when we come across them. Feel free to report any deals that still need fixing.)

You also need to select the "New" option from the "𐌎 Grid", "☰ List", "☰ New", and "⚙ Personalise" options at the top of the page for the new front page algorithm to work.

        • I also don't think it works properly. I constantly see front page deals for de-prioritised tags that I have added.

  • TLDR mode on comments so I can just see the upvoted ones (with collapsed thread) when time is short

    • Are you aware of the 'show most voted comments' option? It's in the bottom left corner of the screen in the hamburger menu.

      See more here

  • 1 - Sort comments by Neg deal vote. More often then not the neg comments provide decent info and counterpoints contained within a heap of random comments.

2 - Ability to flag a comment as off topic if its just a joke or random throw away comment and then the ability to hide those flagged comments.

I get that ozbargain is a great community and there's some fun banter and jokes and these should definitely still be encouraged because it is what makes a website turn into a community. However sometimes you can't be arsed reading through eleventy billion comments just to get info that is really relevant to the deal or the product on hand.

I'd like to think it would also encourage the many lurkers and non registered members to be more active as I bet you a lot of the random banter makes people not already within those circles less inclined to join in on the conversation.

    • 1 - Sort comments by Neg deal vote. More often then not the neg comments provide decent info and counterpoints contained within a heap of random comments.

You can navigate to each comment associated with a negative vote by hitting the dropdown in the menu at the bottom of the page right below the Preview and Post Comment buttons, and selecting neg voters, and then hitting the >. Test on this deal

2 - Ability to flag a comment as off topic if its just a joke or random throw away comment and then the ability to hide those flagged comments.

Where can I give feedback or post small site issues like some wording needed to be updated or revised.

For example on the page https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/ubereats.com

The cashback information needs to be updated to say new customers / first orders only and not just say standard cashback as it seems life every order will get that cashback but long the first order on new customers will.

Where is the best place to report these kind of typos or wording that need rephrasing?

Didn't want to make a new post just for this and this seems like the best place to put it aside from messaging one of the mods to change and fix it.

On deal pages I usually hit the report button but obviously not every page on the site has a report button but maybe they should do the person on the other end reading the ticket doesn't waste time trying to find the affected page or element or thing whatnot etc.

    Good feedback?

  • Affiliate Links for Users Logged In

I think that users that have an account should be able to turn on affiliate links so that they can support OzBargain. (This of course would be turned off by default.)

  • Can you make it easier to post deals from mobile, it's so much more effort on a tiny keyboard and a crappy browser.

I'd love to be able to put in a link like https://store.playstation.com/en-au/product/IP9102-NPIA90006… and have the deal PlayStation®Plus: 12 Month Membership - 25% Off filled in.

    • It will be easier when there is an App…

    • So what you want is actually pre-filling the deal title from the URL?

The deal submission form is complicated and is getting more so over the years because people wanted more and more info. We have considered putting URL field first for a while and let the backend determine how the form would be after the URL has been determined. However it would break some existing process. Something that needs to be planned & redesigned.

It would be cool if we could have 1 account or 1 login (where we could link accounts) across CheapCheapLah, ChoiceCheapies and OzBargain.

If you are talking about data exchange between all sites — then it's not really possible as they are designed to be independent, living in different data centres without any connectivity in between.

Allow us to report the same deal multiple times. Currently there is a restriction that one user can only report the deal once

    • Just report a comment in the deal and we can sort it out. All reports are read manually so we'll understand.

  • Using the new front page option I still see posts I have select as less. e.g I'm not a gamer so I have gaming set to less and tags like [PC] [PS4] [iOs] [switch] [XB1] set to less but still see these posts at the top of the home page. Either these settings don't work or don't work the way I want them to?
Please add a slider option below less to none. Thanks.

    • From what I understand, the filters only work for the New option on the front page. If you are viewing the top deals instead I don’t think the filters work. Or I could be completely wrong.

    • You also might want to try hiding the store. So for PC games, click a deal that uses the steam store, click hide and hide the whole store. Dunno how effective it would be but might help.

Create a sub-section for events like natural disasters (eg bush fires) so these promotions are contained in a seperate part of the site. Better for those who need it and want to search all the offers available, and better for those of us lucky enough not to need these offers.

    • Create a sub-section for events like… (eg bush fires)

Already exists for bushfires simply search for the tag “Bushfire Relief” and you will see al the deals tagged with that tag.

      • +1

Maybe that tag could be under the 'Pages' heading up the top of the page?

Also, mods is it possible to change the links at the top of that tag page to be links and not text?

        • under the 'Pages' heading

I think it's something that won't apply to many and those who do need it will know where to find it. Pages menu is more for something that needs to be accessed continually (easy access) and by a fair number of people.

to be links and not text?

Just double checked and it's not possible.

Frequently deals come up where buying multiple quantities of an item gets you either a better price or an additional freebie.

Right now, if I comment on the deal page by asking if anyone else is interested in joining in on the deal or asking if anyone else wants to buy the other item if I order 2, I get penalised for "private selling" even though I don't yet have an item to sell.

Can you guys please think of a better way to facilitate members coming together to take advantages of deals like these without having to advertise in the classifieds? The classifieds post aren't linked and cannot be posted to the main deal page so they can be hard to find for people who do want to join in on a deal.

Afterall, isn't Ozbargain about helping its members to find and take advantage of bargains? Thank you

Associated & 3rd Party Posts should count as the same

    Example

On 3rd January (and now today, among other examples), 2 posts - 1 associated & 1 third party. No store rep could post twice on the same day, promoting their site. Both those posts promote the same company, either directly through the main link, or a link at the end of the description.

My opinion, they should both count as 1 and be counted the same towards a store rep's posting limits. 2nd post that day shouldn't have promoted Beat That Flight at all.

And lets be honest here, their 3rd party links aren't basic. This is at the bottom of every post, be it associated or 3rd party:

For more deals like this from Beat That Flight, visit our site - sign up for updates, deals, flight hacks and error fares, or follow us on Facebook or on twitter.

Deals from Sydney, Deals from Melbourne, Deals from Adelaide, Deals from Canberra, Deals from Perth, Deals from Darwin, Deals from Cairns, Deals from Brisbane, Deals from Hobart

    • +1

It sounds like Beat That Flight are taking advantage of this loophole.

      • Yep looks like they have it sussed

    • And yes, my report for the deal was replied with:

      Message:
Rep posting limits and third-party posting limits are separate

      Which shouldn't be the case

    • We don't necessarily want to treat them as the same, as they are quite different (3rd party deal vs store rep deal).

This only affects a handful of users and would also require redevelopment of the posting limit system, as 3rd party posts are user based and not able to be attributed to a particular store. There would also be other issues that we'd need to address/redevelop due to the differences in the posts. Not something we are considering for now.

In regards to the links, yes that is something we already have guidelines for ("Store Representatives ensure that any links to your site are both relevant (not unnecessary advertising) and at the bottom of the deal description only."). We've cleaned those up and have/will contact reps with excessive links/advertising at the bottom of their deals.

      Thanks

      • Hey ham, do mods need to assess each 3rd party post to see if it's exceeding limits? I know it's automated for store reps, but I see a few posts manually edited when posting limits are exceeded.

Seems a bit of a pain in the ass :P

        • No we don't need to manually calculate it, the system sends an automated report if it believes the limits are exceeded.

Agreed just like the competitions 'hide' button there should be a 'hide' button for deals

    • at the moment I just collapse offtopic comment threads using the +/- button next to a user's avatar

  • There should be more disclosure when someone posts cheap airfares.

Every single "deal" I've seen on OzBargain are on flights which have long layovers or arrival times at 10:00pm at night that are just slightly cheaper than direct flights with more sensible arrival times. Things like this should be disclosed by the OP.

When reps from flight aggregator websites post them it's basically clickbait.

  • -2

When submitting a comment there should be a "post off topic comment" or "post on topic comment". That way people can filter what they whether they want to see jokes and stuff or purely relevant information needed to assess whether or not to buy.

    • Ok to further expand on this. The comments section has many time has better prices post, alternatives, general discussion about past pricing. So when a deal has heaps of up votes and hundreds of comments it takes so much time sifting through it all, especially with the amount of JV's bs comments. So how hard is it at time of posting for people to press one button or the other right next to it. Those that enjoy the banter and jokes can have all comments visible and those that just want relevant information can switch on to have "on-topic posts" showing? Although i enjoy and partake in the banter and funnies, when there is a crazy price error or limited stock deal posted and want all the relevant information ASAP. Think about it, it requires a picosecond for the person posting to decide what their comment is and yet we get a huge increase in he quality of information for those that want or need it. It would be opt-in so wouldn't affect anyone that wants the unfiltered version of all comments.

    • See here. The issue is that moderators and power users are usually the ones who tag in the product to the deal which may take days to do depending on the queue.

      • +1

I see. Thanks for the insightful reply. Hopefully we all can work towards tagging product to the deal as the ozbargain community :)

  • Could you let us set a reminder later for the same day? Either by adding time in addition to date or having the reminder show up in notifications right away.

Just annoying when an event doesn't start until later in the day.

  • Category tags for deals are now purple? Feature or Bug?

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: It's also feedback. My loyalty is not to the moderator but the community that provides me with deals. They mostly align but not necessarily always.

I've read the rules and don't think it provides guidance.

Would the people who vote negative comments why?

              • @brisdaz:

My loyalty is not to the moderator but the community that provides me with deals.

If your loyalty is to the community then why not just leave them alone instead of spamming them with messages?

                • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: That's why I said grey. I'm not certain it's spamming since it's related to what they voted/show interest in.

Users have the option to turn pm off and if the site really didn't want messaging then they would obscure it like feedback on eBay. Perhaps ozbargain should?

              • @brisdaz:

                It's also feedback.

Feedback on what?! "Is this spamming?" That's not feedback.

                  • @brisdaz: Unwanted PM's are spam, yes

Just because they voted for the deal, doesn't mean they actually downloaded the game

    • Is this spamming?

Yes. Sending unsolicited messages to groups of users is not permitted.

  • Bug: Some posts glitch on the mobile site where you can zoom out further than intended

Looks to be caused by this comment

    • Looks like it works on any post. In comments I can scroll to the right a little.

  • I've recently been contacted by a fairly new ozbargain user ( User A) who sounded suspiciously like someone who had developed a weird fascination with me and was stalking me on OZB ages ago ( User B). I've noticed that User B is currently a disabled user and I've blocked user A. So no biggie. However, out of curiousity, does ozbargain mods ever allow users to retire their old account and start fresh with a new one?

    • Only in some extreme cases, but generally, no.

In your case it might be a ghost account that didn't get caught by the moderators. You can use TWAM to report the case.

      • Cheers Scotty!

  • Can we please change the rules so if a non associated person is indicating a general discount at a site then we don’t need to find specific examples? Can we also relax the rules so people don’t need to search the internet to see if a cheaper price is out there. I think most of us have the skills to find out if there is something we might like by going to the relevant site and/or doing our own Google searches. Thanks.

    • Can we please change the rules so if a non associated person is indicating a general discount at a site then we don’t need to find specific examples?

There is no rule for this however a valid post can be 50% off Sitewide @ Acme Corp. However, putting examples in the description are obviously useful.

What is not OK is situations that don't provide enough info such as Up to 50% off Sitewide @ Acme Corp with no examples as 99.99% can have no discount and 1 item could have the 50% off so this is where you need to provide an example. Or Big Anvil Sale @ Acme Corp, etc.

Deal posts that reference a sale, catalogue or store but don't provide enough information to find at least one bargain, may be unpublished. Deal posts that contains ambiguous or non descriptive titles such as 'up to 50% off sale', 'big clearance' or 'sale' may be unpublished unless specific items & prices are mentioned within the deal description OR a dedicated offer/discount such as '50% off sale' is present (preferably in the title).

      Deal Posting Guidelines:

Can we also relax the rules so people don’t need to search the internet to see if a cheaper price is out there.

It's good practice to ensure the deal you post is the cheapest price out there. Moderators won't remove deals that are not the best price, that is up to the community and users can use the negative vote button to indicate it's cheaper elsewhere.

      • Thanks, I can tell people who “quote the rules” they are wrong.

  • Often when clicking into a comment and reading the comment is still not ready unless manually pressed to mark as read.

  • Would it be possible to have a "trader feedback" section? People can post about how their classifieds dealings have been with other members, a few forums I've used have done this.

    • +1

  • Hey guys, the thought just crossed me a second ago, along with the votes wouldn't be good to have another tally box for people to add a + if they actually bought the deal based on seeing it on that post. Would good everyone more of an idea of how many people actually bought the item.

Probably has already been suggested a few dozen times but anyway.

    • Yes it has been suggested many times. For your own tracking, you can use bookmark/folder to track your own purchases. However we do not have a solution to work out how many people who actually make the purchase, because

      1. It won't be accurate, as many are browsing as guests and some might not mark it.
      2. It gets complicated, when the deal has multiple items, or a sitewide deal, or other complicated setup.

For now we just don't have a good solution for it.

      • No problem, thanks for the reply Scotty.

  • Bug Report - Referral PM System

I submitted a referral PM with my email address at the end of it, but the OzBargain PM system dropped the last letter (@icloud.com –> @icloud.co)

I know for a fact that I submitted the correct email address, as I have Typio Form Recovery installed, which confirmed it.

  • +1

i dont know if this has been suggested before but it'd be nice to separate out newly posted deals and new replies to your post into separate dropdowns. E.g. facebook as dropdown for notifications and a separate one for messages. Right now all my subscriptions and reply notifications are all clumped together and it's just bit messy.

  • The view all comments button is no longer view all in shot anymore as seems to also be limited to a certain comment length per page, see this example, two pages long: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/514558/comments

    • Even in the all comments mode it's limited to 1,000 comments per page so that the backend doesn't take too long to generate a page. It has always been the case so not a recent change.

      • -3

….then the button should be renamed to "1000 comment per page view" instead of "View All"….

        • Well, it's not technically wrong and is false advertising to an extent….but if you're negging me because you prefer a shorter title, fair enough….

  • +2

When you are subscribed to a post, and a deal that is posted on the main page is merged into the thread you are subscribed to, you don't receive any notification for that comment.

  • is that auto scrolling on mobile phones a missed bug? when a guest reads the pages, the pages will keep on loading deals, and would never allow a guest to go all the way to the bottom to look at your footer pages (eg. about us, rss, etc)

there should be a button to 'load more' instead of automatically loading .

this is on chrome on ios.

    • That's just how auto-scrolling works. There are many other pages that do not have auto-scroll that allow a guest user to check the footer, including this page and the OzBargain front page (which for most people would be their landing page when they come to OzBargain).

      • only product pages don't? I was having a hard time trying to locate the RSS link when I'm on mobile.

        • For "listing" pages, usually you just add /feed at the end of the URL to get the RSS.

  • Is there a population graph or site traffic chart to show how ozbargain has been affected by the corona virus events has traffic surged or gone down or have we seen users log in more or less.

Since everyone is at home now and people have more free time and money is tight I would assume this site to experience an increase in traffic definitely but cannot find any links or sources of information to observe this.

Mainly curious about site traffic and user registration numbers.

Is this open to us is there like a live chart or something?

    Just curious.

If it is confidential disclosed information that is cool no worries then.

    • See discussions here:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/524916

I don't see too much difference,

      • While more people are WFH, I suspect that many office dwellers were doing a lot of ozbargaining anyway during work hours.

      • Definitely more COVID-19 related discussions, but way less travel related deals. Retails are getting a hit as well. Crap AUD means less overseas deals as well.

      • With economy downturn, people also have less buying power, so less searching on OzBargain.

Just looking at our ads revenue, last 30 days is down by 20% comparing to last year, showing that advertisers (mostly retailers & brands) arent that hot either.

      • Interesting points and yes I guess you are right.

Ozbargainers that were already doing it from work are just now doing it from home so the only real change is the ip addresses I suppose.

Why is the AUD doing so badly now I know COVID-19 is not helping but before this event it was still not performing well.

        • In simple terms, the economy was slowing, in effort to boost that interest rates were cut, which in turn has an effect on the exchange rates.

          • @Baysew: I see so I guess our economy is slowing faster in relations to other economies?

            So we are worth less.

  • For a while maybe if we can stop posts that encourage hording on the main page? E.g. masks, toilet paper etc.

    • A post doesn't encourage "hoarding", it helps people to be able to buy it.

Feel free to neg posts for being overpriced (eg masks), but not just because they're in stock.

  • -1

I think it's time ozbargain puts in their effort in helping reduce the spread of covid-19. What I suggest is the banning off all posts that encourage people to travel; this means no posts for in-store only purchases/pick-ups or free items given out at certain locations. Posts should be for online-only purchases or online give aways. Once restrictions are lifted from Australia, so are posts here. By allowing posts like these, as bad as it sounds, you are contributing to people being morons and breaking self-isolation.

  • Just wanna say I like the new grey highlight for OP comments, def makes it easier to see :)

    • +1

Except it's confusing because your own comments are also highlighted in grey.

      • Yeah they are highlighted as well, but mine show up as a slight orange tinge instead of grey like an OP.

        Might need some tweaking still

      • Your comments are highlighted with light orange shade.

OP's comments are highlighted with light grey, except in the case where you are the OP, then it's light orange shade instead.

        • Hi Scotty! That orange is so light it's essentially indistinguishable from the grey. Colouring comments should make it recognisable at a glance - at the very least, the entire gradient needs to be a different colour.

And another suggestion, a reverse gradient might look better, dark at the top and bottom, lighter in the centre of the text box. That focusses the eyes towards the middle where text, similar to a vignette on a photo.

As it is, your gaze is kinda pushed out of the text box.

        • +1

I see the saturation of the orange has been intensified - that helps somewhat.

          • @dm01: Yup, def better now. Though I guess when they're both close together, it can look a bit strange.

Might I suggest some sort of defining border around the OP comment box in addition to the highlight

Can we please have a keyword search feature which we can set and then if a new ideal pops up with that keyboard we get an email?

For example I am looking for mulch deals at the moment. It would be great to set the keyword 'mulch' and then get emailed when the next mulch deal pops up.

    cheers Peter

    • Peter,

You mean search alerts? Just search for something, and then click on "Create" to create a search alert that will send you an email when posts contain those keywords.

  • I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the mods. Made a report at 4 a.m this morning and it was actioned immediately! Do you guys/girls ever sleep?🤨

  • +5

Long running deals should have the system auto repost the original deal to the main page every six months rather than having users repost for easy upvotes (guilty).

They could go in a queue for power users to quickly check that the deal is still active and terms have not changed before being given approved.

    • +3

Great idea! Obviously have an exception where if the deal has changed significantly then it's okay to be posted again. An example of where a long running deal has had a significant change is Github.

    • What's the issue with people re-posting deals after 6 months? Why are posters who re-post deals after 6 months less worthy than the original person who posted the deal?

Deals should be judged by their content and not by the person who posts it.

There is definitely a benefit of the idea for those forgotten long running deals that don't get re-posted after 6 months but it seems like a lot of dev time and workload for power users/moderators to ensure accuracy of the deals.

      • +3

You raise a point I didn't consider so I've changed my opinion on the matter but…

Deals should be judged by their content and not by the person who posts it.

We all know this isn't true. A rep posting a deal or being considered a "top poster" certainly changes the outcome of the deal. It shouldn't happen but unfortunately it does.

        • We all know this isn't true. A rep posting a deal or being considered a "top poster" certainly changes the outcome of the deal. It shouldn't happen but unfortunately it does.

That is the issue that needs tackling and we've spoken about it before. Influencers are quite common on Instagram, Facebook and other services whereas we are attempting to de-influence users. At the end of the day, we should be ensuring that deals are being voted to the frontpage due to the deal and not the poster.

          • +2

@neil: There is no denying it's a very difficult task. I think you're doing good so far :)

      • +1

What's the issue with people re-posting deals after 6 months? Why are posters who re-post deals after 6 months less worthy than the original person who posted the deal?

I see these issues with reposting a popular long running deal without referencing the previous posts.

        1. Issue with administration: Users have to remember that there was a previous post, find it, report it as expired and report the new post as long running. If no one remembers then these actions don't get done.

        2. Issue for users: Without a link to the previous post, we lose our collective experience and memory of the deal: How the deal worked, how to get it with the least amount of hassle, what to avoid, the reputation of the merchant, etc.

        3. Issue for posters: The original posters had spent more work and time to find the deals and write up the posts than a reposter, who merely needed to check sufficient time has passed to satisfy the duplicate rule, and the deal still works as advertised. The efforts of the original posters are unacknowledged.

I suggest all reposting of long running deals be required to give credit to the original posters and link to the previous posts.

        • I suggest all reposting of long running deals be required to give credit to the original posters and link to the previous posts.

To be fair, I think it's very rare that happens, and if it does it's normally mentioned within the first couple of comments and a mod/power user normally adds it

Most re-uploaders are people who have posted before and know the way to go about it

          • @spackbace: This is only if an user remembers the existence of the previous post, whereas the reposter knew that it exists. As to how often it happens, based on my personal experience, it happens much more frequently and regularly than you suggested. (The mods will probably give some stats to disprove it though.)

            • @alvian: Search function is partially to blame. I've seen people credit the previous deal when there had actually been reposts since then. When you go and search that previous deal is what shows up with the default relevance filter.

Any way you can change the title auto-settings to stop forcing a gap before a $ sign? EG US$ becomes US $

    • Any follow up to this, if it's possible to remove that from the auto-correcter?

    • This will be changed in the auto suggest in the next update, thanks.

      Example

      • Thanks!

  • Clicking on a deal in the Live list takes me to the last comment instead of the top of the page. Whats the purpose of this change? Can I turn it off?

    • You must have clicked on a comment on the live page rather than a deal.

      • Thanks. Never noticed this for some reason.

  • Another OzBargain twitter account from new forum posts and/or hot discussions.

  • An additional tick box option of Title Only on the search page would be great - especially when trying to type in the option on mobile.

  • I'd like to request the ability to subscribe/receive alerts for new deals linked to a product.
    For example - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/ipad-pro-10-5

Vote count here shows "lactose_the_int…", and when commenting, same thing

    Seems redundant ;)

    • We only show the first 20 characters of username, and in the case when it's more than 20, we show the first 15 characters followed by ...

Yup, there's limitation on the username length, which is 20. However that limitation (+ many other username limits) only got introduced in 2015. Some of the users created earlier got long names. I just did a query and currently there are 267 users with username longer than 20 characters, longest being this guy.

Maybe we'll gradually force those older accounts to change their usernames.

  • when you're in the penalty box, and you get a PM, does the person sending the message get any notification?

    • You still get notifications when you are in Penalty Box, including PMs.

      • No, does the SENDER of the PM get any notification? Like an automated message saying “this member is in the penalty box and can’t reply to pm”

        • Like an automated message saying “this member is in the penalty box and can’t reply to pm”

          Nope.

        • +1

Plus, there's no essential need for any such notification. AFAIK, everywhere that you can click "Start a Conversation" there is a line stating that the user is in the penalty box.

You just need to remember to check that every time before sending a PM. (Sure, it might be nice to have that feature as a backup, but you can always check this afterwards if you send a PM without checking and don't receive a timely reply.)

      • +1

On a related subject, if you have communicated with a person via PM before, but that person no longer accepts PM (as in you cannot start a conversation with the person anymore). The system still allows you to add a message on a past PM thread. If you do, does the person receive a notification and can the person access the new message that is on a past PM thread? Thanks.

  • +3

Instead of merging all the COVID-19 threads into one mega thread (where IMO the comments become very messy), what's the chance of just having a temporary coronavirus forum where the threads can stay as they are?

I think it's quite hard to follow all the different posts when they're in the one thread.

  • How come when I do a deal it doesn't show up in the search results? EG This Deal

    • Due to the database node outage last night, some pages didn't get indexed properly. It will be fixed after the migration tomorrow.

Just something I've noticed, I reported a couple of overpriced sanitiser deals in reference to this post, and reported them as spam. The replies I got were the usual "we don't remove bad deals, if you don't like it then neg vote it" etc (paraphrasing).

Are all mods aware of the stance of overpriced sanitiser/masks? Just seems like some might have missed the memo.

This one was an example. At time of posting, the sanitiser was $48/L, which definitely should count as profiteering…

    • All moderators are aware of the stance however see the following:

Please note that this only applies to rep posts, however posts for stores that lack business details will be removed as always regardless of the poster. Moderators are not experts in any field and decisions to remove will only be made where it's clear and obvious, otherwise the community will decide.

Dettol is $60/L and received 98 votes. $52/l 16 votes. In any case, sanitiser prices seem to have stabilised now.

      • +1

just a suggestion, can we put a temporary ban on L-Plate users trying to dump/offload hand-sanitiser to Ozbargain? It's becoming too frequent now since price is stabilised and these sellers trying very hard to dump their worthless sanitisers now.

        • We've only received 1 hand sanitiser deal in the past week so maybe not an issue anymore.

          • @neil: Coming back to this, can we get a temporary ban on L-plate and P-plate users dumping poor or undefined quality masks onto OzBargain? It's becoming a several times a day occurrence and I'm genuinely wanting to visit OZB less due to every third post being some no-name masks from some no-name store no-one's heard of with obstinate reps that have a go at anyone questioning their rubbish deal.

I mean it's either that or a way to filter out subcats we don't want (like, ya know, Surgical Masks).

  • +1

How come earlier today, my phone (iPhone 11), ozbargain was in dark mode on my phone.. but now it’s back to normal

    • Initially OzBargain detects whether the device ID using a dark theme and will turn on Dark Mode automatically. However that surprised quite a few people do I reverted back to manually turn on the dark mode.

  • Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but my search alert doesn't seem to work:

    Query Created Last Alert
    option:freebie cat:gaming 26/04/2020 - 11:36 Never

    • Your search has two filters but no keyword.

  • Hi Scotty,

For the reminder feature please include time/date, a lot of deals have time difference it saves a lot of time for people to check back in their own timezone rather than going to the deal and say not on yet.

Same day but different times, at the moment only date can be set to reminder

Especially for deals originated from overseas, has time difference

    • Currently we are only sending out the reminder once a day so we can't really let users "fine tune" on the time that reminders are triggered.

      • Once a day is fine we just need to set it to fire a particular time on the day or is this a global setting?

        • What I meant by "once a day" is that we only do it once a day for all users on OzBargain.

          • @scotty: Still rather annoying not being able to set a reminder for time of day. Not every deal starts at exactly midnight on a particular date.

EG:This deal doesn't start till 5pm and I'm already been notified up to 15 hours earlier.

Another idea would be to also display new deals that have been posted to start at a later date and time at the top of the new deals list when they go live. As if they were just posted as a new deal.

  • +1

Suggest to improve Reminder feature: Remind at the time when the deal is started, not when the day is started.

    Suggestion:

Having the ability to change the default thumbnail of a deal while still maintaining the original link to the deal.

Users tend to vote or click on a post more when there is an eye catching thumbnail compared to when the thumbnail is just a blank square. Here are a couple of recent examples:

Free Deus Ex Go with thumbnail (350 votes, 6000 clicks)
Free Deus Ex Go without thumbnail (140 votes, 2500 clicks)

Free Delivery Hungry Jack's with thumbnail (95 votes, 850 clicks)
Free Delivery Hungry Jack's without thumbnail(22 votes, 185 clicks)

    • Thumbnails are taken automatically but in cases where it fails moderators will need to manually upload a snapshot or ask the system to retry.

      • HUKD allows images to be manually updated by the OP.

  • Move deal voting buttons away from far right of screen.

On iOS with Safari the page scroll bar is in front of the voting bars.
So you can’t vote unless you scroll the page up/down, to ensure the scroll bar control is out of the way.

    • Voting buttons for deals have always been on the far left of the page, right under the profile image of the poster. It should be the same on Safari on iOS. Or do you mean something else?

      • I stand corrected.

I meant when voting +/- on comments in a thread.

There is a little down arrow to press on, on the very right side of the screen and comment. In safari on the current ios and on an iphone11 the scroll bar in the browser is too close to the OzB downarrow.

So when I try to tap the down arrow, I actually tap the scroll bar.
The work around is to scroll the page so the comment is above or below the scrollbar control.

  • I'm concerned about privacy & the referral system. because some websites reveal the full name of the referrer.
I can't think of any off the top of my head.

    • That's one of the reasons we have not added some website's referral into our system, or set them to be "PM only" rather than spewing out random referral coupons / links.

  • There are a couple of excellent features on HUKD that should be considered for Ozbargain -
    1) once a deal is posted, there is a delete button for a short period for the poster to delete the deal. After this period has lapsed, the delete button disappears.
    2) the poster is notified when their deal is reported as expired. They can then expire the deal themselves hence saving mods heaps of time.

The deal posting is also much more easier with text formatting similar to using Microsoft Office.

    • +1

      Hi mods
Looks like this has been implemented? I had a couple of notifications when a deal was reported as expired.

      2) the poster is notified when their deal is reported as expired. They can then expire the deal themselves hence saving mods heaps of time.

      • Yes sorry that was rolled out a couple of days ago. For those interested, it looks like this.

For 1) It's likely to be implemented in the near future. It's on the do list, assuming there are no obstacles.

        Thanks for the suggestions.

        • Great to see the unpublish function. How long is it available for before it disappears?

          • @Taegukgi: 10 minutes or when the first comment is made (whichever occurs first).

            • @hamza23: Will a bread crumb be left on the page for self unpublished deals?

              • @Taegukgi: Yes, similar to self-unpublished comments, it would leave a stub with unpublishing reason being "Requested by OP".

        • +1

Just another suggestion. When the OP expires the deal, should the report be removed? This would save the mods having to view the report.

          • @Taegukgi: Reports can only be marked as resolved by moderators from mod's reports page. Viewing the report does not take much time, but it's better for mods to know that reports can only be resolved in one place.

    Add Location to Deal Posts

I think we should have a section on deal posts to add the location of the deal (or choose: Online — if the deal is only Available online and if a deal is available at Harvey Norman for example at all stores the store tag could group together all the locations and automatically show your closest store — maybe?) wether this should be just the city or the exact location I’m not too sure but I think it would be handy in the future especially with the OzBargain App.

    • This has been on the pipeline for a while and has been discussed many times. Location tags are already there, e.g. Flinders Street Station which has a lat/lon attached to it. Implementation is the tricky part but would be quite cool to have bargains near me shown.

      • Oh I didn’t realise there was a Flinders St tag, like you said implantation is pretty tricky, I think the best way to do it is to add a seperate compulsory field rather than a tag since most users don’t bother to add tags to their posts.

  • Merged from Bug: Updated Deal Website Doesn't Trigger Store Subscription Email

I noticed that if a deal has its URL updated, the updated URL doesn't trigger a Store Subscription email notification.

For example, I'm subscribed to Menulog. Yesterday's deal was initially posted with the URL domain of "ESL.gg". When scrimshaw updated the URL to Menulog.com.au, I didn't receive a New Deal email regarding it.

    • Hi itsfree, new deals trigger subscription notifications 10 minutes after the deal is posted, and never on updates. Unfortunately this means that if the deal link wasn't corrected within 10 minutes, the subscription for the store for which the deal was supposed to be associated with won't be triggered.

We currently don't have a way of getting around this, sorry.

      • Thank you for your reply. Perhaps this could be considered as a future improvement then: if a mod updates a deal URL, the email notification system is pinged again.

  • +1

Just a heads up you might want to add that OzBargain now has an app on this page (User FAQ), also under “How do I remove my comment?” it should also include that you can do it yourself provided no one has replied and the comment is less than 60 minutes old.

    • Thanks. That has been updated.

  • Whenever a duplicate post is removed, a link is left on the duplicate to the original post. Is it possible to bring the original post up to the place of the duplicate instead? I think this is useful when some deals are duplicated multiple times e.g. the GTA V game through Epic games.

  • Is there a way to search through just your own comments or and deals you posted, historically for a phrase or word or anything at all? So I don't have to stroll through everyone else's comments just to get to mine which may very well be at the end of the search result or anywhere else inbetween but I wouldn't know until I thoroughly go through the search results….?

    • You cannot search just your comments. However you can just search through the deals you have posted, including all the comments, by adding user:145544 to your search query. 145544 is your user ID.

      • would it be feasible to search just your comments though?

        • That would not be possible.

          • @scotty: what about just listing all your previous comments? like when you go to your profile page and it shows your previous activities. The comments tab makes you click on the number before you can see your comment pop up.

      • Works great on your own posts but doesn't seem to include comments from posts of other users….wanted to go back looking for something I posted a few years ago that I had posted on another person's post…

So why can't we search through our own comments? Is it just too much work to get it working or not enough interest to bother…?

        • The main issue is that search is indexed against the post, not comments. Therefore it only gives back the node IDs from a given query, thus it is not possible to search only the comments you have posted.

Indexing each individual comment would mean the indices would be larger than comments themselves, thus making it not possible at the moment.

        • +1

You could try using this Google search

          • @itsfree: Nice. Any way to sort in chronological order lol?

            • +1

@CVonC: Unfortunately, Google removed that feature a while ago – the closest thing would be to use the custom date range tool

              • +1

@itsfree: Damn never knew they even had a sort.. would've been very handy all these years!

  • Another feature from HUKD which would be very useful. Whenever a new deal is available, a banner would display above the current highest deal to show there are new deals available. This would stop a lot of unnecessary refreshing of Ozbargain when there are no new deals available.

    • People aren't using Live?

Is it technically possible to prevent referring websites to track that a clicked referral URL has originated from OzBargain (e.g.)?

I have lost a lucrative referral code that was apparently used 9 times here, and I'm guessing they figured it out based on the referrer header.

    • Yes we have ways to suppress referrer header that the mods can turn on/off per referral settings. You can request it to be turned on in the Referral forum post.

  • Is there any future for expanding categories or splitting the ones already existing?

For example, as a currently expecting ozbargainer I'm subscribed to the 'Toys & Kids' category however I'm not interested in the Lego/pencils/games that are mostly posted, only the kids and baby stuff.

    • Might be better using title filters to exclude the things you have listed. See here.

      • Thanks, will definitely make use of this, but I'm assuming there's nothing like that for subscription site or email notifications? I don't want to hide the deals completely, just not get notified for the Toys part of Toys & Kids.

        • You can search for a keyword and then exclude keywords you don't want in a category. e.g. You want Star Wars, in Kids & Toys category, but don't want LEGO.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/star%20wars%2C%20-L…

or query: Star Wars, -LEGO, Category: Toys & Kids

But you need to search for a keyword. Can't just be notified for everything posted in Toys & Kids except for LEGO. Might be easier to do a bunch of alerts you are interested in within Kids & Toys.

  • Personalise front page setting > don't show expired deals option. Does not seem to save for me…

  • Hey Scotty

Any chance of take a look at using a script like quicklink / instant.page for external deal links across the site for logged in users?

Quicklink: Faster subsequent page-loads by prefetching in-viewport links during idle time
instage.page: instant.page uses just-in-time preloading — it preloads a page right before a user clicks on it.

should give users a slightly faster advantage in accessing time limited deals.

    • Wouldn't that use more data, just to save a few seconds on navigating to external pages, which users might/might not actually go to?

      • It could be an opt-in service via user settings?

      • With instant.page atleast, it starts the preload upon hover alternativly can be configured to start preload on mouse down.

  • Would it be possible to add feature to move and display new deals that have been posted to start at a later date and time at the top of the new deals list when they go live. As if they were just posted as a new deal.

From what I can tell. These deals don't show at all when displaying new deals even though they have just gone live. Would be ideal for those who missed the post or didn't set a reminder.

    • For good deals with sufficient votes, moderators will schedule them for front page highlighting. I guess we could automate some of that when posted upcoming deals meet certain criteria.

The reason we don't bump previously posted deals starting soon is to discourage people from gaming the system by posting future deals, as they would always have 2 chances to get on the front/new deals page.

      • Ok. I see an option to display deals starting soon. What about an option to display all the starting soon deals that have gone live in the order they go live. As I see it. Once a deal goes live, if it's not highlighted on the front page then its lost amongst all the other deals as if it actually started the day it was posted. Not the actual start date and time the deals goes live. Which in my opinion is more relevant.

  • There seems to be an issue with the Instagram tag on this post.

    • Thanks, this has been fixed now.

  • would it be possible to put a number next to "report" in comments (similar to reporting posts)?

    • It won't be possible to be next to report because there can be up to 100 comments on a page which results too many queries. However we can put the number inside the report popup so that it's still possible to see whether the comment has already been reported, when you try to report it.

The original intention for showing the current report number is to stop users overflooding moderators with reports, when they see that a deal/forum topic has already been reported. Didn't really work though.

      • +2

The original intention for showing the current report number is to stop users overflooding moderators with reports, when they see that a deal/forum topic has already been reported. Didn't really work though.

I always thought it was so that more people could report it which would then prioritise the fixing of the deal. (For example if heaps of people reported sockpuppeting the deal would get unpublished faster).

        • +1

Thanks so much Scotty…. I always thought like wouldyouliksomecash that mods would like many to report cause would grab their attention for bigger breaches etc

  • Quick question: when adding a photo to a deal description/comment does OzBargain mods/admins prefer if we use the OzBargain file uploaded or a third party service like imgur?

    Thanks :)

    • Probably OzBargain file uploader for the sake of users, so there isn't spam/ads/tags on the image file and it should load quicker.

  • is it possible to add an option to subscribe for item or service similar to subscribe to a store? thanks

    • Not possible as tags don’t get added until later on in most deals. An alternative would be to setup a search alert.

  • There appears to be a bug as Classified Ads no longer show up in the live tab.

    • Classified has not shown up in Live for a while, as Live feed only contains publicly accessible posts, but we have moved Classified to login only.

Something that I need to fix for a while…

  • why deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/440682 was unfairly marked as expired as in fact it is a long running deal ? another user created a new page and now it is marked as "long running" instead.

  • Is it just me or did the "edit" button disappear from the comments section. I recall being able to edit my own comments but now I can't find that button anymore.

    • That's weird, the "edit" button showed up in this comment but not in my other comments in other posts???

      • Ok, now my first comment can no longer be edited but my second comment can. I guess we can't edit comments once someone has replied to it?

        • You can only edit your comment if both:

          (1) Less than 60 minutes has passed
          (2) No one has replied to your comment

  • I think we need better way to choose what forum topics appear on front page.

Most comments means that troll posts such as https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/549828 make it to the front page too easily. (I don't really need to mention all the "no car insurance" posts where the OP gets flamed. There's no reason why such posts should be on front page of a bargain website imo)

The only alternative I can think of is having a voting system. I think this would be better so that you actually have content which people think is interesting/useful on the front page.

    • Posts that you may not like reading, may be enjoyable to others to read. Just have a look at news sites and their most popular articles. They're certainly not the in-depth, investigative pieces they spend ages writing but usually this celeb did this or look at this cat in a suit etc. That said, we do have a flag to prevent individual posts from hitting the front page where the topic may be controversial.

We've just changed the front page algorithm to count unique comments instead of total comments. Let's see if that makes a difference to the front page.

  • Why are we only allowed to report a deal or comment once?

What happens if you need to report a deal more than once?
EG one or more of an item listed has sold out / is no longer available / expired but not all. Then later another item or whole deal expires.
If the details of a deal have changed and need updating multiple times if you are not the original poster and can't change yourself.

    • Why are we only allowed to report a deal or comment once?

It was a database design issue.

What happens if you need to report a deal more than once?

Use TWAM or post a comment and then report that to get moderators' attention.

      • On that note then, is it possible for the "Report Resolved" message to also have the TWAM link in it to start a post? I've had one case where the report was resolved but the mod inadvertently missed one incorrect part of the deal, so I had to manually create a TWAM post.

        • Previously there would only be a link to TWAM if the report reply from a moderator contained feedback (writing), found in your PM inbox. Admins have added a link to TWAM in the report reply in the notification itself as of this morning, for report replies that are a simple resolution without additional feedback (no action taken, content modified or content unpublished).

          Thanks for the suggestion.

When clicking on "votes" for a comment, all the positive votes are listed first before the single line that contains the negative votes. When looking at the votes for a comment that seems controversial I am mostly interested to see how many times it has been neg voted. But the more controversial it is the further I have to scroll to get past all the positive votes to see that single line. Can you please move the neg vote line to the top? It is always only one line so isn't going to take up much room.

And something else - can you colour the voting button differently if we have already voted on a comment? Eg green if we have already given it a positive vote? Sometimes I go back and read an old post and go to vote on a comment only to find I already did.

One last suggestion re comment votes. If a comment is past the age limit to be allowed to vote on it. Can you just remove the voting button? Clicking the voting button then clicking the + button then getting a popup saying "this comment is too old for you to vote on" which you then have to close is kind of annoying

    • Thanks, we'll look at implementing these:

      • Show number of -1 voters on comments before +1 voters
      • On mobile sites indicating whether the comment has already been voted
  • I've noticed since the COVID-19 situation that some posters are going around negging deals (especially face masks) simply for being made in china. Is this an invalid negative vote, without actual evidence of an issue with the product or vendor? Should this be added to the voting guidelines?

    • Neg votes for country of origin (COO) and manufacturing origins are valid. As per Moocher's answer to your question in your TWAM.

There exists circumstances where people have negged a deal for food products that aren't grown or produced locally, electrical appliances that aren't compliant with Australian safety standards, masks will fall into the same area. The community can decide whether the vote should stay or not using the comment voting system.

  • Just noticed that typing out of stock in deal gets you a message to report

Maybe we should have the same thing with price in title. (Perhaps also auto notify OP aswell if possible)

  • out of stock

Are you able to hyper-link the recent deals in the search suggestions menu when we search something so that we can open them in a new tab/different browser window? I find myself right-clicking the recent deals far too many times (I'm sure I'm not the only one) to open them in a new tab however it just closes the whole search suggestions bar. Would be nice so you don't have to leave your current page to visit the deal you searched for :)

You need Super Drag if you're in Chrome. I haven't right clicked for tabs in years. Just click, drag and release to open links in new tabs or to Google highlighted words. It's super fast!

      • Oh, interesting! Will give it a try, thanks.

    • No, please not. It's very easy to open links in new tabs by control-clicking them (command-clicking on Mac) but when the site explicitly opens links in new windows it's a giant pain to try and get them to not do that. It's preferable that people wanting to open new windows do so with your browser's alternate-click behaviour rather than making everyone who expects a link to work like a link have to work around it.

Just thinking after seeing a Westpac Extras deal post, should those deal posts have their link removed and instructions to manually log into online banking be supplied instead? It's incredibly bad security practice to click on links to a bank's website, even worse a deeplink into the bank's online banking system, and OzBargain really shouldn't be encouraging those practices given its reach. Westpac even advises you specifically never to click on links to online banking.

I've noticed that routers (mesh or otherwise) seem to be categorized differently often.
    Wireless Router: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/559421

    Modem Router: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/560817
    Both: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/557643

I wonder if the categories should be combined to a single category - (eg "Wireless Networking")?

    • They should all be categorised as Wireless Router. Sometimes those product tags weren't set up properly.

"Wireless Range Extender" are specific Wi-Fi AP that only has repeater / extender functionality, but does not provide routing.

"Modem Router" are routers + ADSL/VDSL modem in a single device. A bit rare these days with nbn.

      • +1

Right, I guess I'm proposing merging these 3 categories so that deal posters don't make this mistake. There's not much advantage to keeping them separate them if posters keep getting it wrong…

        • Those were actually mistakes by moderators. Posters only need to link to the product tags, and then the product tags would add in relevant brand / category tags. Those product tags were not set up with the correct category — not a mistake by the users.

Merged from [FEATURE REQUEST] Notifications - Show Unread button

In the dropdown menu under the bell/notification icon
    there is two buttons

    -See All
    -Mark as Read

It would good if there was another button..
    -Show unread

This would be good filter to just show only unread bargains/notifications
so it does not get cluttered with ALL the bargains as well as unread bargains/notifications.

I often find there is 1 unread notification but it is be buried down somewhere in all the bargains
(that have been posted since that bargain)
and now it is very hard to find just that 1 unread bargain/notification.

    • "Show unread notifications only" is now a setting option. Turn it on and the notification drop down will only list the notifications that have been been masked as "read".

  • Can there be a floating "Top" function like Pricehipster instead of having it right at the bottom of the page?

The All comments page doesn't currently support posting replies. Can we have that changed?

  • +1

Comments and replies currently show net votes instead of +'s and -'s. Could we have the latter?

  • Neg votes on comments and replies currently do not require any justification as neg votes on posts do. Could we have that changed?

    • Too complex and unnecessary for every comment.

      • Plus it could create a problem where people know how is downvoting their comments…

        • If it is a policy to keep neg votes anonymous, then the reply can be made anonymous too.

The case for asking users to justify their neg vote on comments is the same as for asking us to justify our neg votes on deals: it is otherwise too easy to mindlessly neg someone's comment, possibly obliterating their comment and overriding their vote.

  • -1

Currently, comments are ordered chronologically only. Could we have options for ordering them by net and total votes? (By a controversy index, e.g. total – |net|, would be interesting too.)

  • We can currently post deals anonymously via email by sending it to [email protected]. Could we have an email to post non-anonymously (linking the sender address to the registered profile)?

Currently, we can revoke votes but cannot vote again. Many times we vote on a deal and later change our minds based on others' experience and observation or on actions by the seller. Could we please be able to change our minds?

  • Why is voting not allowed on comments posted more than 30 days ago? Searched everywhere here and found no rationale for this. Is OzB's content that time sensitive? I don't think it is, especially when talking about the quality and reliability of products and services. It's so frustrating when you search for product here that you're considering buying, read the comments and can't voice agreement with them.

    • We can't even upvote long running deals past 30 days!

  • not sure if this is the right place for it but it seems shopback has changed it's referral url syntax and it's not the same as the one you can store in user profiles here now.

    • +5

      Dammit, bright yellow banners :P

      • Ahhhh that's the reason. Hurts my eyes!

  • is there an issue with getting logged out of the site continuously? happening seems to be daily on my phone/laptop

Suggestion: One Deal Per Headline and Allow Voting only based only on the Main Deal.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/565476

Using above as an example, 50 votes, not bad, popular, but I would have thought that the GPU wasn't actually that great a deal, maybe the votes are just for the SSD, who knows.

Its like showing someone a lawn mower and a 5 pack of underwear, and asking peoples opinion.

    • If that's the case then increase the default store rep posting limits. It will seriously cause a disadvantage for associated users who already have posting restrictions.

    • Nah. People just need to create discussion in the comments on what they see as their particular reason for upvoting.

  • +1

With PS5, Xbox Series X/S and new gen GPUs we’re gonna see a lot of deals that are stock announcements at RRP. Can we encourage/enforce an RRP tag? These posts (which in the past have included Switch, NES mini etc) appear to be polarising and on the whole the community/mods appear to have accepted them as legitimate posts. There are still those, myself included, that don’t want to see these deals, if there’s an RRP tag I can easily hide them. Similar to why the SUBS tag was created.

TLDR: enforce an RRP tag so I can hide those deals

  • +2

Could we please search by price? (using Google's syntax $100..$200, for instance)

Also, could we personalise the home page by price range? Perhaps, that'd be easiest to implement by simply adding price range tags (and that would work for ranges too): $0-$10, $10-$100, $100-$1000, $1000-$10000…

  • i cant seem to hide "deals from store". i've ticked the box, i go back to the front page of deals and it still shows up.

    am i doing this wrong?

    • do you already have 50 blocked stores/entries? The site doesn't allow you to add more if thats the case
      go to settings, then blocked

      • Yeah it seems like I do. What's the reason for the limit?

        • +1

scotty explained it in linked below
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/8951996/redir

wish its larger as well, i hit 50 and have to shuffle out disabledusers or slightly-less-spammy stores/users from my list

          • @payton: thanks for the link, time to shuffle these around i guess.

            • @pandaman: Can either block the store, or the user who is the store rep

Doubles the limit, in a way

  • Don't hammer me too hard for this, but I have an iPhone so am new to widgets.

How about an OzBargain widget? It'll make it easier to check bargains on the go. With many bargains, the benefit is to find out about them early.

In a hot discussion topic with heaps of detailed arguments, sometimes it can be hard to keep track of which comments responded to which parent comment
Can we have a little up-arrow on a comment if it is a sub-comment (ie its responding to a parent comment), and clicking the arrow will take you to the parent comment

  • +9

The new location of the top of page arrow and comment menu is bad.

The menu covers too much of the page on a mobile device when trying to navigate to each new comment.

    • +7

YES I am hating this new feature..

can we rollback on this change pleaseeee..

I use the new comments's arrows and now have navigate one extra click for each page.

  • +4

Dont hide the Comments section. its one of the most used buttons

    • +1

Agree, especially when moving between new comments.

  • +3

On desktop, please return the old page & comment navigation menu, the new one doesn't add benefits IMO and adds extra clicks

  • Today's change is part of adding a floating "Go to Top" button on all pages & consolidating fix positioned elements on the page — it has been planned for a while and I am not reverting back. It's one extra click to bring up the menu, however for majority of users and instances where you don't use the old comment bar, the new floating buttons take less space (especially on mobile when not bringing out the menu). Moreover the scrolling detection code is much simpler now & I am not bring back the old code.

    • +4

More of a drag and click but shouldn't we be trying to make less clicks instead of more? Anyway since you're not changing, would it be possible to have the option of transparency on the button?

Also to me the floating box certainly takes up more room than the old bar along the bottom. Covering a good chunk of the page.

    • +9

Not a fan of this change - it's significantly more than one click when you're trying to jump between all the new comments in a thread on a mobile device because you need to keep closing the menu to read the comments. Having the button to launch the menu floating over other stuff coupled with its relatively small size also makes it rather easy to accidentally click the wrong button and jump to the top of the page or click something underneath it.

Out of interest, why was a button to scroll to the top of the page needed? Were people getting lost at the bottom of the page?

      • +2

could be due to this 'Infinite scrolling'

Use infinite scrolling in the place of pagination on some listing pages

    • +5

Try it on a mobile device, very hard and counterintuitive when moving to new comments.

    • +1

I wish it were possible to vote on your posts so you could see what people think of this change and your steadfast refusal to consider reverting it.

    • +4

Yeah this update really isn't a great one. Has reduced usability significantly.

When just wanting to read new comments, it's now re expand the bar every time to click to the next one.

    • +2

iOS already had this function built in when you tap the top of the page. Sigh.

    • Can you make the buttons optional? I find them annoying and they sit right over the Post Comment button. Would disable it if I knew how.

  • +6

At least can we have the arrows (< >) and "Mark as Read" back to it's original place.

  • +1

Could we have a running thread of feedback for members from classifieds sales? An old site (Mactalk) used to have this and I would search the thread for a username to see if there's any positive or negative feedback for the user. Usually someone would just drop a line in the thread and say "Purchased x from xyz1234, smooth transaction".

I also want to say that I love this website. The design, features, pages, thoughtfulness… I could go on. Awesome job by the creators and moderators and also the community for making this site a great place.

Comment downvoting has always been a hate of mine.

After having about 6 or 8 different Sandisk products fail and even more perform poorly i downvoted this (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/567195#comment-9326451) deal based on the following rule.

    • Voting guidelines - Issue with product

It's not until today i realise that the number of downvotes i got actually cancelled out my neg.

It's far too easy to downvote comments without any regard for the rules or any repercussions.
    This has to stop.

At this point due to the unruly comment voting activity i use Oz Bargain almost exclusively for my own benefit, and find myself never posting a deal and now avoiding discussion.

If Oz Bargain ever feel like changing then i might consider posting the occasional deal, but at this point why should i bother when i'm treated like crap for posting a fair comment or vote and useful information?

    • Those downvoting your suggestion just proved your point, I think 😄

This has been suggested/requested at least 3 times before just this year, but mods find it "too complex and unnecessary" to address this ongoing issue: [1], [2], [3]

  • Yay thanks for the arrows now. But the first click on them doesn't seem to work, you have to first click the …

I only just discovered the 'hide' option has a setting for hiding from certain poster. This I think is great .. though sometimes the posters that bug me do post something good, and due to obvious dupe rules it won't be posted by someone else .. can there be a tolerance / threshold added ie don't show posts from this user unless it hits X up-votes of the front page or something?

I noticed the last couple of days, the site will glitch and every time I click on a link, it will open a new browser directing me to audi RS q8 webpage. Happened twice now and I need to close the tab and reopen it again. This is on iOS chrome

    • Same for me. Also getting it with the Dominos ad. Seems to be those ads which have the scrolling format and even though you scroll past it still sits as the top layer so any link you click takes you to the ad. I gave up using app on my phone over last couple of days

    • The upstream has identified the issue and disabled the said ads network.

Instead of having the ($0 with Prime/$39 spend) in each deal title, why not make a tag that would sit beside the category tag and the bottom of the deal on the front/deals page? Clicking it would either explain Amazon shipping details or show deals with that tag, ie Amazon deals.
You could then have tags for eBay plus, free shipping, etc. Simplifies the titles and moves repetitive content to tags where it belongs.

  • Hi Scotty,

Can you add an Original Poster icon (e.g. orange color microphone icon or whatever color you want) next to their name in the comments?

This would make it more standout in comments chain and quicker to identify they are the original poster in the comments when doing fast scrolling of the page than current slightly darker shading method.

    • Having a small icon next to the user name quicker to identify than having the entire comment in a different shade? Not sure about you but definitely not me.

      • I think the current very light grey to white gradient shading is not that good in contrast when there is a white background as well..

Try it yourself by scrolling quickly up and down the page…
You will see what I mean..

When you do a quick scroll down on the page, the grey to white gradient shading blends/blurs with the white background too well…
If the shading was a light orange or some other more contrasting color than grey to white gradient against a white background then sure that would be much better in contrast.
Like my own comments is in the orange shading then that clearly stands out more against a white background than the grey gradient for original poster.

Basically grey to white gradient against a white background is not a good contrasting color

Or If you had a simple orange microphone next to the name (e.g. like reddit) I think that would be more effective in seeing that this the original poster comments
than needing to shade their entire comments with a not very good contrast light grey to white gradient shading..

If you look at reddit design there is no need to do shading if you got some icon next to the username to indicate
        -original poster
        -my own comment etc..

If you don't want to add icons like I suggest then at least change the current grey to white gradient shading, cos that is poor contrast against a white background.

Ideally it would be good to add both the icon next to the username and change the grey white gradient to some other more contrasting color.

      • On a related note, I think it would be a good idea to have a different shade for your own comments vs the OP's as currently there's no way to differentiate between the two unless you read the username.

      • +1

when viewing in normal white mode ie not dark mode..
the light grey to white gradient is not a very good contrasting color.

Try it and do a quick scroll with you mouse wheel up and down the page..

you will see how it just blends in with the white background too easily..
since light grey to white gradient shading is not a very good contrasting color with a white background.

This color should be change to something more contrasting with white background.

And there is nothing bad with adding a color microphone icon next to the username in conjunction with the shading..
This would just help in quickly identifying the original poster more quickly.

When browsing on my desktop, would like to have the titles in the right hand panel (New Deals, New Forum Topics, etc) also be links to the relevant section of the website. Often I'll glance through the New Deals pane, then want to go to the New Deals page to see more, and expect to be able to click on the New Deals title.

I realise moving to the menu bar, hovering over Deals and selecting New Deals is not onerous, but being able to click on the titles in the right hand panel when my attention is already there seems natural to me.

  • Can we get a feature to subscribe to products and we get an email every time new deal on that product? Like we can subscribe to stores and stuff

    • You can already subscribe to a search term which sort of covers the same idea.

Setup an option for the OP to put their donation link or like YouTube, to reward the uploader with monetary benefits.

It will encourage more good deals and hopefully a more active community if the OP can be rewarded by something other than + and a badge.

    • I understand this is common on Twitch and Youtube but we had a similar system with referral links where users could put their referral link in their post. For the majority of the time, it worked as described as a way to benefit the user and an encouragement to post deals. It also however contributed to some people posting low quality deals just to flog their referral link or code. This caused poor deals and commotion within the community

So then we added guidelines that it could only be at the bottom of the post. Again poor deals and commotion in the community. We further added things like no bolding etc. Same result. We added referral posting limitations similar to reps. This did help a little bit. At the end, not allowing referral links anywhere other than the automated referral system seems to be the way it's applied fairly and without community issues. If a deal is popular, the OPs referral link will show in the referral system box.

      See Help: Referrals

So I think with the history of referrals, a donation link may have similar issues. We do give monthly prizes to contributors which we hope does encourage community contributions.

  • How about an OzBargain leaderboard? It would rank members who've accomplished the best deals (via stacking or simply by being at the right place at the right time and pulling the trigger). The board would simply be populated by comments on deals that people would nominate for ranking, like this one, and everyone else can vote up the most impressive thrift feats. What for? I, for one, learn a lot from these masters of thriftery.

    • Feel free to start a wiki page and forum post.

      • How can I do that? Searched all over, to no avail.

What I suggested would require more functionality than the wiki pages here seem to have, though. It would require buttons next to comments in deals to nominate thrift feats, and voting on the board page. Anyhow, it's just a whimsical suggestion, not really a request.

        • How can I do that? Searched all over, to no avail.

Just type in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/randompage or whatever you want the page to be called.
          Hit Create Page.

Anyhow, it's just a whimsical suggestion, not really a request.

          Fair enough.

  • Good to see OzRRP deals are now being encouraged with forum posts being taken down.

  • Could we please have a “Daily click” tag for competitions with points for daily click options?

This would be so handy to decide whether I need to get on with entering it right away to get today’s click or can safely put the competition in my “To Do” folder.

Should be an incredibly easy thing to add too.

    • Those comps should be marked as daily entry and can be found here (Daily entry from the Comps menu).

  • For posts from months ago that were posted and now closed, would it be possible (as OP) to view the revisions? The reason being is that I have a post where copying the previous markdown table would be significantly quicker to copy from revisions than having to create new.

    • Basically OP just wants to access the raw Markdown of an old post? I'll have a look…

      • Yep that's right. I just spent 10 minutes recreating a table when I could have just copy and paste.

I'll save the table for next time though ;)

        • Hi Clear, this was rolled out this morning so OPs can still view the source of old deals/forum topics.

          • @moocher: Thanks so much you're the best

Today I have started getting full page ads covering the site, that I need to scroll a page to then get to the actual site. The ad goes away after I click on it or it goes after 30 seconds or so.
The ads always been Optus and has happened each time I visited.
The ad still has the small pictures of each deal over the top on the advert on the right as well as the Votes on the left side . Strange, weird formatting gone wrong.

This is on an iPad iOS 14, chrome browser.

I don’t have any issues with other sites and it’s only started today.
I have had to turn the ads off in settings, don’t like to do so seeing that your income and I sometimes click ads relevant for me.

    • Hi. If anyone encountered the Optus iPhone 12 Pro Say Hello to 5G ads, please send me the URL where the ads redirects to.

  • Show how many people subscribed to a search term

  • When there's multiple stores for a deal, for example , it's always confuses for a sec when I get a notification that in this example says for a store you have subscribed to: AmEx Statement Offers and I haven't subscribed to that store but another one of the stores listed in the deal, be nice if it would say for the store you've actually subscribed to.

Is it possible to show the amount of votes on a deal in the search results page on mobile view? Currently it only works on desktop site.

  • Just curious if the 'tags' / 'stickies' at the top of Ozbargain have been removed? I used to filter "gaming" by "PS4" content, and "Entertainment" by "Blu-ray". I don't know if it's just my Chrome being silly, or if there was an update, but I'm hoping that feature hasn't been removed!

    • There was a bug that got deployed this morning. It has been fixed now.

      • Thank you!! Happy to know it wasn't just my Chrome messing up. Thanks for letting me know :)

  • Jobs Section

Seeing that OzBargain is one of the most visited websites in Australia. I suggest a jobs sections for employers to post jobs and people to apply.

  • Recently got a full page parallax ads from Domino's https://i.imgur.com/TEyQ13s.png. Link to here https://www.dominos.com.au/offers/app/50-off-delivery

Not the same as PVA this one placed in the usual banner ads after second post.

  • Could we please see post votes on the Notifications page?

  • Would be great to have a username change log in member profiles (to keep abreast of name changers). Thanks.

    • A lot of name changes are done for privacy reasons such as signing up with their real name, using usernames from other sites, stalking issues etc. For that reason, I think it isn't a good idea to have old usernames publicly available.

  • Is it normal for a removed post e.g. duplicate to count towards your 24hr post limit?

    • Unpublished posts generally do not count towards the posting limits.

      • I've hit the 24hr 10 post limit but there's 9 posts with 1 unpublished. Unless I'm counting wrong.

  • Can we have a feature where you can leave private notes for yourself for each deal post? I think it would be handy to know what and when was bought, especially for cashback deals.

  • Does anyone know how to get notified when I write a comment, and

    a) someone replies to my comment
    b) they add a reply to the same thread after me, (eg to 'subscribe' to the thread)?

  • Would like to see a "Gmaes" sub category under computing.
This would be great so l33t gamerz could subscribe.

  • This is really minor, but should be easy to correct: the highlighted search results' text and background colours in dark mode don't mix; white on yellow is illegible.

  • Hi team,

1- Remove Max rating/day Limit for user star ratings

2- Add "re/set to default" option for Personalized front page/new deals

    Any update with above?

3- Option to hide/unhide our selected deals or posts.

  • Could we please have stores included as tags in tag search? For instance, I'm now after a chest freezer. I wonder: how often does Aldi has theirs on sale? If I tag search Aldi + chest freezer, I get zero results.

  • This just occurred to me… There's a truckload of IT people here… How about outsourcing the site's development to fellow community members? That would surely alleviate the site owners here… And speed things up a bit! Developments could come online in a beta site first, and authorised to wider deployment by the site owners, of course.

    • OzBargain is very much a custom solution that scotty and moocher are all over. I'm sure if you have suggestions on what you think could be improved on they'll be happy to take it under consideration.

    • +1

How about outsourcing the site's development to fellow community members?

      ha ha…

Then OzBargain would look like MSY

      • I don't see why.

        1. That's already partly in place with wiki pages.
        2. As with mostly all development, changes are tested in a beta environment, and only deployed to the public environment with mgt approval.
  • Just for clarity on this thread.

We always encourage feedback but won't always respond if the suggestion is in the not sure/would be nice/what the pile.

    • Ahh okay…
Perhaps pinned or edited in would be nice,
      I feel neglected.

  • How about a EXPIRES IN X DAYS warning tag next to deal titles similar to the IN X DAYS already there?

  • Merged from NSFW Ethical Hunting, Adult Products etc

Would it be constructive to have a sign in Tab to NSFW deals? This way items such as swords, Rifles and hunting equipment as well as Adult products (that one asking for a friend) could be listed ona sperate NSFW tab.

Would it be too difficult to police? It would take controversy away if you had to age verify every time you opened the tab.

    • +6

This is a good idea because age verification is impossible to bypass on the internet.

      • Correct, the internet is a place where honest people share the truth.

    • I know scotty has made it clear many times that he doesn't want adult content on OzBargain for various reasons. You ought to create one yourself ;)

      • Does condoms count as adult content?

(Lingerie, Prophylactics are permitted, Toys and Pornography are not permitted)

          • @neil: Just on that, I have noticed general discounts from adult stores (Love Honey, for instance) just get removed, yet offer lingerie as well as adult toys

            • @spackbace: Love Honey is a "sex toy shop" as described by themselves.

      • No, I see how hard the mods have to work here.

    • Rifles and hunting equipment

You can forget about this. Too many lefties here.

      • Too many lefties here.

Comments like these attacking righties, lefties, other inflammatory comments is why gun deals are no longer permitted.

Firearms deals are now banned. Not because we have an argument for or against but because of the shitshow of comments, reports and attacks this brings to OzBargain. Not helpful for bargain hunters, moderators or members.

I wish people didn't feel so inhibited from neg'ing deals. Quite often we see people providing candid negative feedback on products and services they bought in the past, and still they won't neg the deal. Why? No wonder, equally often we see people who neg'ed a deal being piled with neg votes on in their comment till their deal neg is erased to oblivion. It seems like mods have been so worried about "too much controversy" amongst members that they devised rules that essentially hide all disagreement.

  • +1

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but can I suggest adding a way to sort by price / discount % in the search, so that it's easier to look through the price history of a product?

    • I have replied previously. Right now each "entry" in the search result is a post, and a post is a collection free form text. Often a deal post might have multiple products & multiple prices. Sometimes a post might be a site-wide discount with no pricing information. Implementing sorting posts by price / discount is not feasible.

      • The formatting interface certainly identifies prices from text in post titles, as it highlights them in a different colour… How about adding price criteria in the search syntax? Or the front page filter? Sometimes I just feel like browsing a bargain bin, not sifting through multi-hundred—sometimes multi-thousand!—dollar "investment". (That may be different from what @jwu56 was asking for, though—for a price history, I usually just pull a tag search on the specific product and sort it by date.)

        • What I was thinking of is an extra price input box / text box deal for the deal creator. It would make the search function a lot better, and everything a lot clearer so we don't get non-deal bargains. To solve the problem for site-wide or store-wide deals, we can just add a radio box to change the type of deal and just have the deal creator enter a percentage discount, so we still have the search function

This might be a lot of work to implement though, and I don't think a majority of the community would need it.

I can provide a mockup / design if you want me to clear things up / explain things better.

And, I mean so that I'm able to sort by price, not really a price history per se, but that'd be nice, as the better deals are usually on ozbargain and save a lot of sifting through the web and comparing etc.

          • @jwu56: Yeah, you're right: what you're asking is a lot of work, and the community would most likely baulk at it. It's way too much kafkian bureaucratic detail… I think the tech term for it is: data overspecification.

But, for filtering searches all we need is to exclude posts without dollar numbers lower than max and higher than a min.

            • @wisdomtooth: Or if we just used regex to find a dollar value and sorted that. That would be a little bit easier 😜

              • @jwu56: Yeah, I do that with a regex search browser add-on, but it's a very poor substitute for a site search filter.

Copying from here, referring to the enormous discounted gift card table - which is full of very useful data but extremely hard to read, because most of the time when you're looking a row you can't see the headers to see what the values actually refer to!

Devs, not sure how to ping you, but sticky table headers would make that table vastly more usable and it's really straightforward(css-tricks.com); I literally use the dev tools to enable it every time I use that page just so that I can see which discounts apply to which retailers.

IDK what your wiki software is, but it's probably possible to add a class to the table (e.g. sticky) and wire up something less fragile than this, but this is the rule I add.

    .sectionedit7 th { position: sticky; top: 0; }

  • Can the referrals link be put under the "pages' tab. I saw (and reported) a post in forum looking for a referral code, and I couldn't easily find the link to pass it along.

    Thank you

I've got a suggestion about the affiliate links. They aren't enabled for logged in members, which is a solid policy that helps protect OZB. But what if OZB set up a second affiliate account for each site (Amazon, eBay, et al.) and for logged in users that second affiliate tag is applied. And 100% of the money from those second tags go to charity. I don't see why anyone would object to that. It has to be better than letting Amazon and eBay keep all the money from items bought after logged in users click the links. If all the money from logged in users went to a HIV or cancer charity or children's charity or something very wholesome then I don't see how anyone could complain or object. it might not be a great deal of money per day for users logged in, not as much as guests, but it'll add up to a whole lot of good being done after a few years.

    • I can see that it's a possible opt-in option for users, for those who don't want to use cashbacks.

    • Love the thinking mate.

Does it have to be charity though?

Could it be to fund developer to implement features voted on by the community like mentioning users that's been asked for multiple times by multiple users over several years?

More people are self interested rather then altruistic especially on a site like ozbargain.
