Nokia Beacon 3 wifi - 3x3 @2.4ghz, 4x4 @5Ghz MU-MIMO.It's comparable in specs with Netgear Orbi RBK50 (2 Pack) which retails $649.

I came across this product on whirlpool a while ago and had setup a price drop reminder. This morning got notification that its 15% off but later on saw amazon is doing additional 23% off on top. Bringing them down to best price that I can find. Use 3% off gift card from Suncorp deal making 3 pack version for ~$380

edit: noticed Nokia Beacon 1 (3 pack) is also discounted in the same way, comes to $261.79 delivered here

I'll be upgrading from Google wifi (original) that have been in use since 2017 but recent firmware issues and lack of mesh in AP mode is why I'm looking for a replacement.

It supports VLAN tagging for TPG based ISPs or others that might need it.

  • I'm also considering the Beacon 3 vs waiting for the Beacon 6 (which of course would be more expensive) but has WiFi 6 support.

    • this ticks all the boxes for me, so I've ordered it. ethernet backhaul, bridge mode mesh, etc.

did try TP-link Deco X20 from Costco recently but not impressed with it at all. my iPhone 11 Pro which supports wifi 6 could only get max 600mbps standing next to the puk. On ethernet I get 930mbps regularly.

      • +2

Very happy with my TP Link Deco M3 x 3 pack, $251 on Amazon now.

        • thanks for the tip - bought a set too. what do they normally go for?

          • @6000SUX: They are $289 at harvey and office works now, not sure if been more before.

      • What did you pay for the deco x20 from CostCo? 3pack? I'm going to try it out

        • $469.97 I think. They brought it in as replacement for Orbi which was too expensive and wasn’t selling, according the Costco sales person.

Correction: $464.99 found the refund receipt

      • Hey fifoo, this doesn't appear to support WiFi 6. Did you order the beacon 6? If so, where from?

        • +1

No, it doesn’t. Decided to go for a top end mesh wifi router rather than basic wifi 6. More devices are wifi 5 or AC so will get more use of this one.
To my knowledge, Beacon 6 isn’t available yet

    • +1

I've also got the Nokia 5G Gateway through Optus and have been keeping my eye on the 2-pack to extend the wifi coverage. Was also waiting for the Beacon 6 however this price was too good to resist

      • It’s advertised by Nokia as mesh wifi with fastmile 5G but I read a while ago Optus firmware was limiting this from happening. Do you know if it works for sure? A friend has 5G setup, he’d be happy to know.

        • +1

Optus customer service confirmed compatibility. You can only add 2 beacons to the 5G gateway

          • @ChatGPT-4: Thanks for confirmation. I’ll let him know.

Also I’ve read on Nokia wifi forum that someone confirmed connecting 4 units in a mesh. Nokia recommends and supports up to 3 but doesn’t stop connecting the fourth on. So may be if there is a need, can be 1x fastmile 5G + 3xbeacon 3 in a mesh.

            • @fifoo: Nokia's support advises that when used with the 5G CPE only 2 Beacons are supported

              • @ChatGPT-4: I have the Optus 5G Nokia modem too, are you saying I should only buy the 2 pack, as the 3 pack is irrelevant?

Will the 2 pack of this be a lot better than the TPLink Deco M5? I have a small house but need a mesh for better signal, but if this is $100 more than the M5 2 pack but does a way better job, I'd bite the bullet.

                • @dammit: Correct, you should only get the two pack. The details are on the Nokia website around this limitation

  • $382 and $510 for me (2&3 pack)

    • +1

      Whoops, "at checkout"

  • +4

Don't even know Nokia makes router
My last Nokia product was 3310 (the old 2G one 20 years ago)

    • same here, till I saw it on whirlpool

      • +2

Nokia make a ton of networking gear, probably wouldn't exist at all as a company if it wasn't for that!

    • +5

They pretty big in networking….phones was just a smallish part since they also developed most of the mobile phone infrastructure.

  • Is this better than the Google Nest Wifi?

    • +1

Yes, google nest is on the lower end of mesh wifi router. Newer ones can’t even be used with wired backhaul and specs show it will be much lower throughput.

      Google Nest wifi:
      Wifi router
      AC2200 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi
      4x4 (5 GHz)
      2x2 (2.4 GHz)

      Wifi point
      AC1200 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi
      2x2 (2.4 GHz/5 GHz)
      Wifi router & Wifi point
      Simultaneous dual-band (2.4 GHz/5 GHz) Wi-Fi supporting IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac

      • +2

Nest wifi actually supports ethernet backhaul and to do this you purchase a few Nest wifi routers.

  • Would these mesh things do anything better than my current setup running two routers cabled to my main router?
    Running a couple Technicolor 799s and a WNDR3800.
    Thanks

    • +2

Yes, I tried running 2x technicolor DJA2031 with same SSID in bridge mode but it leaves it up to client to switch wifi and default client behaviour is to hang onto it as much as it can. This results in poor battery and slower speed if client is connected to far away AP. Hand off protocols 802.11k,r,v are used to achieve seamless roaming or hand-off.

      https://www.speedguide.net/faq/how-to-setup-seamless-wireles…

      • Nice info. Thanks.
I'm running three SSIDs, one for home smarts downstairs, one for me downstairs and one for my son and home smarts upstairs.

    • If you are going to hardwire, why not look at Ubiquiti products?

I've had a UAP-AC-LR for several years and it's great, easily covers a normal sized suburban block. I recently also ditched my POS Netgear modem/router for a Edge Router X.

      • I also have and love ubiquiti. I have an AC-LR and Lite.Does the house and backyard easy.
But requiring a software controller makes it a bit harder for the average bear.I spun it up on a VM.
I believe some of their products now have an easy APP to configure.

      • +1

have looked into ubiquiti gear, they provide excellent configuration options but in terms of throughput Nokia Beacon 3 is comparable to UAP-NANOHD-3. it usually goes for around >$280 each.

each to their own I guess. It's not a one fit all sort of equipment.

  • Wow Nokia still around..

    • +1

They got the name back off Microsoft

      • The whole Stephen Elop saga

        • The SOB (someone on Suits just said it lol)

      • +2

        They never lost the name.

They licensed the name to Microsoft for a few years - but only for mobile phone devices - when Microsoft paid ~$8 billion for their dying mobile business.

Microsoft had to sell their last smartphones (eg Lumia 950) with Microsoft branding, as their license to use the Nokia brand had already expired.

Nokia re-licensed its brand to HMD mobile for its new smartphones in 2016. (HMD had previously brought the dumbphone business from Microsoft for… some reason).

      • +1

Nokia Networks was created when they split the cellular side of Nokia and NSN.
NSN was around for a while before that doing all of the other hardware, much like Ericsson who used to make cellular devices but also were heavy in to networks and telecommunications stuff. They're also still doing their thing.

They've always had the name, it was licencing to MS for the phone.

    • Yes and they bought Alcatel Lucent a while back so have lots of good network products.

    • I thought they got bought by TCL

      • Alcatel-Lucent had license agreement with TCL to sell Alcatel branded phones. I guess when Nokia bought Alcatel-Lucent, they got the rights to Alcatel brand as well. TCL still makes it Alcatel branded phones so agreement must still be in-place

        • Aaaah, that's it. I was pretty sure there was a link.

  • +1

Awesome, thanks OP. Am also going to upgrade from OG google mesh wifi setup.

  • +1

is it a router + 2 extenders? or all extenders?

    • As far as I can find out, All three units are the same. Like how original google wifi use to be before they changed it and wifi points or extenders on the new “nest” version don’t have Ethernet port and share antennas across both bands.

      • +1

That's awesome for redundancy. For Google, you're in trouble if thr main router died.

  • AU plug?
According to a review, the app does not have many features and doesn't allow users to change password…

    • I don’t have one yet so can’t answer definitely on the password change but it’ll be pretty stupid if they don’t let you change password. Should be AU plug, but once I get it I’ll confirm.

It needs to be setup with app but has WebGUI as well. One of the things that hate about google wifi and TP link mesh is that it’s app only.

      https://wifi-helpcenter.nokia.com/hc/en-us/articles/36003414…

      • Thanks for the reply.
I am now struggling between this one and the Deco M5, which is a popular gear on ozbargain.
It's a decent deal for the specs on paper. But not sure whether it is $150 better than M5.

        • +1

depends on your usage. if you don't have really fast internet (1gb) or the need to transfer a lot of data locally such as access NAS for media, regular backups etc then perhaps $150 is better spent else where. also number of devices that concurrently use wifi is a factor.

          • @fifoo: How many concurrent devices do you think this can handle? I have around 40 atm

            • @ntb: can't testify as I don't haven't tested it myself yet but support articles say 64

How many devices can I connect to the Nokia WiFi network?
You can currently connect up to 64 devices per network.

  • +3

Brah the Netgear Orbi is Tri-band. The Nokia isn't.

    • Orbi use one band for backhaul only.

for internet it is still dual-band

      • +2

Exactly. Makes a huge difference in mesh setup.
Also pointing out that comparing the price to the Orbi isn't right.

  • Not sure why mod has marked it expired, I can still add it to cart and order for listed price ?? Can anyone please confirm they can’t order for this price.

  • Can I use this for nbn?

    • +3

Yes. If you are on HFC/FTTP/FTTC this will work directly with nbn supplied modem/NTD/NCD. If you are on FTTN, you need to use RSP supplied modem or another vdsl modem in bridge mode and then connect to this via Ethernet

      • Thanks

      • how do you use this with the NTD?

        • +1

Ethernet cable goes from NTD directly to Nokia’s WAN port. Mobile app or GUI will allow you to configure RSP specified WAN setup such as IPoE (Telstra, ABB, SL) or TPG based ISP will require VLAN tagging over PPPoE or IPoE.

What RSP you have service with?

  • How would this compare to the Amplifi HD mesh router setup?

    • Would like to know it as well, im running 3 amplifi hd routers at my place in mesh but still lacking signals in some areas, i know old double brick nd concrete home :)
Would this be better? Really dont like the look of orbi, too bulky

      • +1

You're going to struggle with anything wifi related. You have already invested in Amplifi purchase another HD.

    • Amplifi can be configured in a few different ways. What exact setup are you talking about?

      • what different ways? i can only see simple mesh. one connected to other and then to router or all connected to router depends where the router located.

        • I mean like are we comparing 3 of the Amplifi HDs or 1 Amplifi HD with 2 of the wall plug nodes vs the Nokia B3.

  • i would just wait for the tenda nova MW12 coming out end of this month

  • this or the ORBI RBK23?

    • +1

The good thing about this is that it’s in stock. I ordered the RBK23 over a month ago and still no sign of stock so bought these. I wanted the Ethernet ports which the Nest didn’t have. You give up the dedicated wireless backhaul of the Orbi, but you get a faster processor and from what I’ve read the wifi should be sufficient in the real world for internet under 1Gbps.

      • Same. Ordered RBK23 from good guys commercial for $350 but no stock and no ETA, so probably looking like a month or two away from an update at least. Ended up buying the 2pack TP-Link Deco X20 for $270 after doing some research - its Wifi 6 and while it doesn't have the wireless backhaul like the M9 - I have lots of ethernet points (new house) to enable a wired backhaul so don't need the wireless backhaul. Would be interested in other opinions on the Deco X20.

  • I just can't justify this kind of money for something that may only bring marginal improvement over what I have already in the property I am currently at.

Is this for people with large properties with thick walls?

    • +1

Not necessarily, could be lots of corners or a long property or multi story. Since the radio waves can’t really go around corners, the mesh network assists with that. But if you don’t have very fast internet or don’t do a lot of local transfers over wifi then it’s not much value from these.

      • Yes, I get the local transfer thing being of value. Plex would run beautifully with these, wherever you're situated.

    • Im in a 2 bed shoebox in inner sydney, google mesh wifi still can manage to distribute wifi through the house because who knows? brick walls, lead paint? Something… the apps says poor connection as soon as you move around a corner or in another room. Set up of the house means you cant have them all in line of sight.

Picked this up hoping I can at least fill some of the black spots and increase link speed (currently maxes ~50Mbps) where I can connect.

  • Possibly a silly question but what does this do better than google mesh. We are just a basic family household with couple of devices using Aussie BB NBN 100mbit. Since we bought the google mesh our wifi has been running well and only one unit for the whole house surprisingly (good positioning?). Cheers!

    • +2

if it's working well for you, no need to change anything mate.
I've been using google wifi since 2017 before it was even released in AU market and have been happy with it. my needs have changed, potentially because of WFH and have time available to optimise my NAS storage, backups etc.

      • Yeah it's working well. Every now and then needing a restart but no comparison to the previous router ex Aussie BB.
Also WFH but no backup or storage at home. All in the cloud.

  • Warranty?? No mention of it anywhere.

  • Does anyone know for sure is this works with the Optus 5G Fastmile modem?

Apparently it is 'supported' but there is a detailed discussion here explaining things like the Beacon 3 do not currently support the Wi-Fi Alliance EasyMesh standard ; and if it did, it would have allowed the Fastmile 5G to be the EasyMesh Controller for the whole Wi-Fi Network. Instead, you need to keep 1 beacon connected via Ethernet to the Fastmile. Which would significantly reduce your range.

    https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/5G-Home-Broadband/Nokia-5g-…

Is the only way this works on the 5G Nokia Modem- Connect Beacon 1 via Ethernet; then maximum 1 other Beacon in the house?

Based on this, is it worth the extra $100 to buy a 2 pack of this compared to the TPLink Deco M5?

I do get awesome speeds on 5G, 400mbit down, so want to use mesh to get this fast speed signal strength up around the rest of my house (which is only a small 3 bedroom timber house).

    • it seems that it has been fixed?

Re: Nokia 5g gateway compatible with Nokia Beacon 3
      Hi:
I have successfully connected them together. I was confused about creating an user at the beginning. But when I contact the support from app, the customer service sent me an instruction which is not available on website. Following with this instruction, connection is done in minutes.

    • another user advised earlier that Optus support confirms it works.

      MarketersDream:
Optus customer service confirmed compatibility. You can only add 2 beacons to the 5G gateway

      • Thanks for the info.

I just pulled the trigger and bought the 2 pack.

Is there any way for the first beacon to connect via wifi instead of Ethernet so you can get further signal reach? Or always the 1st needs to go via Ethernet?

Technically I could have gotten by with the M5 and saved $100; but it only goes to 500mbps, so was worried that with signal loss it might not get me full speeds. Splurged and got the Nokia instead, which apparently goes to 3000mbps wifi speed.

Hope it is easy to set up..

        • yes, you should be able to.

It says on support page "The Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway can be used as a root device with Nokia WiFi Beacons."

          https://wifi-helpcenter.nokia.com/hc/en-us/articles/36004311…

        • Just signed Optus because of this deal

          • +2

@kenshinice: I reached out to Nokia asking to confirm this works with Optus 5G and this was their reply.

Nokia provides a solution that 5G CPE and beacons can work together as a mesh to extend the WiFi coverage in the house. Under this combination, 5G CPE must work as a root with Layer 3 function. Other beacons work as extenders with layer 2 function. The connection between 5G CPE and beacons can be wired or wireless. You can have following topologies. I assume you have a 5G CPE with two beacons.

            1. 5GCPE——-wireless—-Beacon3——-beacon3    (Linear)

            2. 5GCPE——-wireless—-Beacon3                (Star)
            |———-wireless—-Beacon3

            3. 5GCPE(LAN)—-wired—-(WAN) Beacon3 (LAN)——wired—(WAN) beacon3   (Linear)

            4. 5GCPE (LAN)—-wired—(WAN) Beacon3        (Star)
            |— (LAN)—-wired—(WAN) beacon3

            5. 5GCPE (LAN)——L2 switch——-(WAN)beacon3   (Star)
            |————-(WAN)beacon3

Currently all 5G CPE in Optus have been upgraded to version R1003a. The corresponding firmware is 3FE47609ABJH38 for Beacon 3. If the beacon’s firmware is lower than the target one, I suggest you upgrade it manually. To form a mesh, you should start with a Nokia mobile app downloaded to your mobile. Then follow the instruction on the app to do the onboarding for the 5G CPE first, then for the beacons. The easier way to add beacons is to connect the beacons to 5GCPE with Ethernet cable directly. After the beacon’s LED turns blue (which means it has been added to the mesh), you can disconnect the cable and put it to the right place to extend the coverage. The same action to the second beacon. Please be informed that the beacons cannot be placed in anywhere. As you know, WiFi signal fades very quickly when it is blocked by walls/doors or other objects. It also impacted by distance. You can google related information

            • @dammit: thanks for lot!
              noted!

            • @dammit: I have received the beacon and found something interesting
I have connected them all using wireless and done the star style.
However, in the beacon page, it shows that gateway is offline and the rest beacon is online.
              get confused

  • Thanks For the OP. I've ordered a 3 pack. Cheers!

  • Had no idea Nokia made networking gear. Really Intresting need to look into feedback.

  • -1

I really hate when people mention products that aren't the actual deal in these posts because it triggers search alerts. E.g. this triggers an alert for "Orbi".

    • -1

I’m really sorry. Must have gone through a lot of trouble to not ignore the deal.

      • It happens like 5x a day. Just an observation, if people are posting a deal on a Samsung phone, say, it's not helpful to say "all the same features as the Apple iphone X!" because then every single person with an alert for 'Apple' or 'iphone' gets an email.

        • +2

Came for the Samsung iPhone X deal, and am now disappointed

          • +1

@Ak850: LEGO (R) Xiami Samsung iPhone X with Blitzwolf Orbi charger.
