Nokia Beacon 3 wifi - 3x3 @2.4ghz, 4x4 @5Ghz MU-MIMO.It's comparable in specs with Netgear Orbi RBK50 (2 Pack) which retails $649.

I came across this product on whirlpool a while ago and had setup a price drop reminder. This morning got notification that its 15% off but later on saw amazon is doing additional 23% off on top. Bringing them down to best price that I can find. Use 3% off gift card from Suncorp deal making 3 pack version for ~$380

edit: noticed Nokia Beacon 1 (3 pack) is also discounted in the same way, comes to $261.79 delivered here

I'll be upgrading from Google wifi (original) that have been in use since 2017 but recent firmware issues and lack of mesh in AP mode is why I'm looking for a replacement.

It supports VLAN tagging for TPG based ISPs or others that might need it.

Better notification settings would improve this. Limiting discussions on OZB would ruin most of us nerds

          • @Jay-rad: It's not discussions, it's when it's in the deal post itself.

  • Does this support VPN as in Surfshark and Nord VPN and can I replace my router altogether. I have Cat6 at the edges of the house, so I am looking to have main one connected to the Fibre ONT to the WAN port of Kokia directly and from there Ethernet backhaul to the rest of 2 nodes. Also need throughout to be 1Gbps as I have 1Gbps fibre

    • from all the information I can find, it doesn't have a VPN client. also it won't give you 1 gbps over wifi, but all WAN/LAN ports are gigabit.

    • I'm planning to put this in AP mode behind pfsense. something I couldn't do with my google wifi

      • It has 4x4 MU-MIMO with 160Mhz channels, so a 802.11ax client like Intel AX200 should get to 800-900Mbps I am thinking.

        • You mean 802.11ac? This product does not support 802.11ax/"wifi 6"

      • Sounds like I have the same setup as you and also replacing Google wifi 🙂

  • Aah… am I missing something here? No mention of 802.11ac support. Buying pre-ac in 2020 is madness.

Derp it says AC support there but the Amazon linked product does not.

    • No shipping email here. Are you in melbourne?

    • Also got this email, am in sydney.

      • Must be from Sydney warehouse then.

        • Yeah, ships from moorebank warehouse according to tracking.

@ratman: mine has arrived now, that was fast!

            • @dammit: Same! :) setting up now - doing a bunch of speed tests for devices around my house first, so I can try and measure the difference.

              • @ratman: that's quick !! … let us know your first impressions.

Recieved mine today! Just went through the set-up process. Wasnt completely smoothe sailing, but have definitely seen worse. Kept getting an error that said another device is logged in. After rebooting the main becon, it went away. Initially third becon connected to second beacon via wifi, but it then realised that it had ethernet available and switched and changed the network config on its own.

Using Ethernet as a backhaul, and getting similar wireless speeds to ORBI. (I only had a 2 set orbi system, and needed a three. Impossible to find another reasonably priced RBS50). I am on Aussie BB 1GBPS plan and getting 900-950mbps down, 30-45mbps up on wired (as expected) and 350-450mbps down, 30-45mbps up on wireless. So far so good. I am happy with the build quality, and the App is ok. There are many more features via the web interface on your PC. Lets see how this goes…

    • Thanks for the feedback. What wireless device you are using for testing? I would expect more than 450mbps on wireless if the testing device has 2x2 MIMO (my Phone 11 pro max does have this).
I could get 510mbps using a 4x4 MIMO wireless AP on my Superloop 1gb.

      • Using an S20 ultra. I think my slightly slower speeds might be due to the fact that I havent separated the 2.4ghz & 5ghz SSID's. Broadcasting a single SSID. I could be wrong though.

    • So far so goood. I have 38 devices connected (total) mainly wireless with some wired and have had mainly no issues. The only devices that havent worked properly are my TPlink HS100 Kasa smart switches. They keep dropping their connection. Tried everything to get them working again with no luck.

      • Hey Sancho123456
On the app, can you find out if the HS100s are terminating on the physically closer node?

        • To be honest I hadnt checked which beacon the plugs were connecting to, or if it was the closest one. One of the plugs had a beacon very close to, literally right next to it. Both would connect to wifi no problem, but connection would drop off and then they wouldnt reconnect. I tried resetting them, I tried factory reset on both and they would always connect the first time then they would drop off and not reconnect.

I have lots of different smart home systems and this one was the only one that I have had issues with. I replaced them Arlec plugs from Bunnings (using Grid Connect) and they are working fine with no issues.

          • @Sancho123456: It sounds like the same situation with my cameras and Roborock. I have two cameras that operate on 2.4GHz, both have a Beacon relatively close to them but they try to connect to the one on the opposite side of the house - sometimes successfully although the connection would be slow, or will just remain in a disconnected state.

I've turned down the transmit power on the 2.4G radio, and it's resolved my issues so far. I also have two HS100s, I haven't noticed any issues with them yet.

Suss 'sticky clients', I think that's what's going on here.

I got mine, working very easy straight out of the box with Optus 5G gateway modem.

Plug the beacons into the gateway modem using ethernet initially, then turn on. then use nokia app and setup new beacon, scan the QR code. then once all done, turn off and place the 1st beacon in the desired spot, (do the one closest to the modem location first), turn on, then once it goes blue its connected…then do the same with the 2nd one further away and you will be all done.

I'm getting 700-1040mbps from the beacons, my actual 5G is getting about 150mbit down; 50mbit up, pretty happy with that.

  • Got mine today, set it up, the WIFI struggles and is constantly dropping with 20+ devices, even with the device right next to my PC.

Perfect connection 100mbps with network cable, drops to like 30mbps with wifi, but the wifi also drops out constantly.

Tried with 3 different wifi cards of different speeds/quality.

    Very disapointed.

    • Looks like Broadcom wifi cards don't like it, ordering a intel based chip to see if it is much better.

My laptops which have intel wifi chipsets work fine, my three broadcom pci-e cards all don't like it.

      • Interesting. Please update once you have tried it. Thanks

      • have you tried 5ghz?

        • On top of the bad signal from all of my PC's with broadcom chipsets…. Using my Samsung S20 Ultra… sitting inbetween the two points which are 15 metres apart, the wifi just constantly drops in and out therefore kicking me out of my games. It's not seamlessly keeping connected to the points and is worse than the two ASUS AC-68U's i had in Mesh that it replaced….

How is Amazon on returns of open items?

Also can't find the remove beacon option in the android app, the instructions say its somewhere but its not.

        • Can you turn off Band Steering?

  • looks like everyone is getting it except me. c'mon amazon, ship it already !

    • damn that sux, esp given you posted the deal! Where are you located?

      • Melbourne. Must be the lockdown… order detail show delivery by Thursday

I'm in Melbourne and got mine today.
Was relatively simple to set up with the exception of an error that appeared whilst configuring requiring the main unit to be rebooted. No issues getting ethernet backhaul going between the two units. Got all of my devices connected wirelessly - cameras, iPhone, MacBook, PC, TV, Roborock, etc with no issues.
Did encounter an issue setting static IPs - wouldn't let me assign an IP if was already assigned by DHCP, and it wouldn't let me boot the device that's occupying the desired IP. Had to factory reset and take a staggered approach to connecting devices.

I came from a C3150 v2 (also ac Wave 2 and 4x4 on 5 GHz) and after some initial testing with the Beacon 3, I'm happy. The data points around my house are at the extremes so I was experiencing major coverage/performance issues on the opposite side of where the C3150 v2 was sitting especially with smaller devices.
Whilst not the best judge of performance, I was consistently achieving about ~90/36 on Speedtest (I've got FTTP, 100/40) with the C3150 v2 and depending on the device used to test, that would drop to 10/2 with major packet loss if I ventured to the other side of the house.
Now, to the same Speedtest server I'm achieving ~107/37 with the Beacon 3 throughout the house, on all devices. Mindblowing.
Copying to my PC (with an ASUS PCE-AC88) from my NAS, I'm getting around the same speeds as I did with the C3150 v2, ~about 50MB/s.

    Thanks for the deal.

Glad it worked out for you. A lot of systems on static IP allocation want it to be outside of DHCP range, when setting up leave a block of 50 for your static and rest for DHCP.

I ordered 3 pack before posting the deal, weirdly it hasn't even shipped yet. May be 2 packs have, not sure what's happened with Amazon. Usually it's quick

      • I have thre same with two pack yet to ship

    • It appears my celebrations were a bit premature. Like a few others above, I'm now seeing my 2.4GHz disconnecting from the network - in particular my cameras, fridge and Roborock. Only have about ~15 devices connected wirelessly.
I've created a new 2.4GHz only SSID and have moved these devices to it but still having the same issues.

      • Update - I was playing around with the app and noticed that some of the devices listed above which were physically closer to one node, were terminating on the node on the opposite side of the house causing it to either randomly disconnect or have a slow connection. The nodes about 15-20m apart from each other and since the last update, I've reduced the transmit power to 75% - suspecting it may have been sticky clients. I've had success so far - the devices are now terminating on their expected nodes and haven't yet had any of the issues I was experiencing before.

  • Finally it has shipped (3 pack - Melbourne) arriving tomorrow via Amazon's own logistic.

  • setup mine today. Pretty straight forward without any issues. performance is great so far, I noticed the issue of far away devices connecting to primary node but once all three nodes were running for about 5 minutes, I restarted them all and since then its good. my phone switches easily between the two nodes inside the house.

I can't get access to Nokia Wifi console https://wifi-helpcenter.nokia.com/hc/en-us/articles/36004918…

Support chat is saying some migration is taking place and after that I'll be asked to register in the app. did anyone else got the option to register ?

Also weirdly I can't disable DMZ ?? edit: browser cache issue

    • Hmmm I didn't get an option to register in the app for this either, also I have mine in bridge mode and when connected to the WAN I get this weird DNS problem as it seems to be proxying DNS. When i attach the cable to the LAN port instead it appears to work better but app stops working am i missing something?

      • Spoke to chat again and they said it’s some big migration. He was gonna check with team and get me a date it’ll be complete. Haven’t heard on that yet.

For the DNS, yes it seems to run a DNS proxy to enable URL access to web GUI rather than using IP. Something I believe they need to fix in future firmware for true bridge mode.

I’m currently running it as router, directly connected to HFC modem + pihole for DNS and it’s working really well. May be define primary DNS for ipv4 and also change LAN ipv6 to static and set it up that way. You can use 1.1.1.1 or any other.

        • How are the speeds with Wi Fi clients, if you have a 2x2 MU-MIMO or 4X4 MU-MIMO client (like the 2019 or 2020 Macbook Pros with 4 TB ports), Gigabit Wifi speeds should be possible. I cant wait to test mine, its on the way.

          • @regenade: tested just now on my MacBook Pro 16inch. this is 1m away from beacon and getting 1gb over wifi.

            iperf3-Nokia-Beacon3_wifi-5ghz

            • @fifoo: Thats amazing considering the Macbook is not even the latest and greatest Intel WiFi 6 AX200 adapters, they are using standard Broadcom 4x4 802.11ac adapters which are capable to theoretical speeds upto 1.7Gbps. This Beacon 6 is then even faster than the latest Deco AX60 which costs $600 even discounted !

              • @regenade: MacBook is not wifi 6 / ax and neither is beacon 3.

Deco X60 deal posted yesterday is wifi 6 / ax and is 4x4 MU-MIMO so that does offer even more speed. I don’t have anything with wifi 6 / ax other than my phone (iPhone 11 pro max) which is 2x2 MU-MIMO which won’t take full advantage of the X60 but I think it’s more future proof

  • Out of stock, i was looking for Beacon 3 two-pack. only Beacon 1 (3 pack) is available now on Amazon AU. Anyone has a Beacon 3 or 1 available for sale?

    • I have a new one in box if anyone is interested, got the TP Link one as Amazon took ages to deliver mine !

  • Mine is not working well with the optus 5G. It’s now resetting the main gateway every few days and won’t recover until I turn it off at the power and wait five mins. The 5G signal drops and then all white LEDs turn on in a circle and the red light in the middle. Optus say I’m on the latest firmware and can’t update me.
