        I think he/she meant:

Has Anyone Really Been Far Even as Decided to Use Even Go Want to do Look More Like?

I think what he/she meant is: Note that you don't "pay" a single $$ if this …

I had a Altitude Black card along with my Westpac mortgage, every year I get charged a $395 package fee but never paid CC fee.

    • You need to pay the membership fee. Just the yearly fee is waived.

    • I'm kinda new to this whole thing. I signed up to the St George promo a few months back. I've received the 80k Qantas points but when do I receive the lounge passes?
Do I also just cancel when I receive the points and sign up to this offer? Thanks in advance.

  • Do you get status points with this card?
Do you get points for government spend ex taxes?
    Thanks

Would paying local council rates count as an eligible transaction?

    • I have the same question. My council has payment through Bpoint on the council's website. So not sure if that is classed as a "Bpay Equivalent". My bpoint payment is through the councils website so it seems a bit different to logging into the westpac internet banking and paying a Bpay bill through the westpac site. In the past with other westpac cards with similar conditions I still got rewards points for my council Bpoint payments but never really sure if i was just lucky.

    • Doesn't seem to exlude councils, only bpay and ATO

"Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, payments to the Australian Tax Office, BPAY, BPAY equivalent transaction, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account."

    • +3

If your council supports Post Billpay, just use that.

For those chasing Krisflyer points, make sure you select the Velocity bonus points over Altitude Reward per the following conversion rates:
    Velocity > Krisflyer 1.55:1
    Altitude > Krisflyer 3:1

    • Thanks.

    • +1

Heaps important info - Thank you!

      • Also the better earn rate is slightly in Velocity memberships' favour

1.25 Altitude points per dollar => 0.42 KF points per dollar
0.75 Velocity points per dollar => 0.48 KF points per dollar

How's that stack against other KF earn cards?

    • Thanks, was wondering about this!

    • Dear me, I can't decide. I have ~120k Qantas points and ~20k Velocity points. Krisflyer sounds much more appealing, but I'd basically be starting again..what to do!?

No time like the present I suppose..

      • You could always sell your qantas points for $1320-$1440 to ease the burden of starting again with velocity points.

        • Yep good point, still toying with that idea. I could redeeem them for some domestic business flights but seems like a waste.

  • +1

I think this is a nice bonus for those that choose the Velocity program:
When you choose Altitude Velocity rewards you can also enjoy 2 Economy X seat upgrades a year, on selected domestic Virgin Australia flights.* To receive the upgrades, simply provide us with your Velocity Frequent Flyer number and make a direct spend at Virgin Australia on your Altitude Black Mastercard®. Vouchers will then be available in your Velocity Frequent Flyer account within 10 business days.*

To redeem your Economy X Seat Upgrade vouchers you must first book an eligible domestic flight directly with Virgin Australia. Once you have booked an eligible domestic flight with Virgin Australia, you will need to call the Virgin Australia Guest Contact Centre on 1300 038 373 to redeem your Economy X Seat Upgrade vouchers.*

    Also:
" 50 Velocity Status Credits once you've spent $10,000 on eligible purchases in the first year."

    Well that was approved quickly.

    What to spend 4k on?

    • Should have waited for a month more for x'mas time.

      • -1

        Christmas in, September?

        • I think RHSteven meant that if you had waited a month to get the card you would be within the 90 day window for your Christmas spending (ie. Sep-Dec)

I am a westpac customer already.

Just had to chuck in my income, liabilities, living situation, dependants and savings.

Took about a minute or two to process.

        • did you have to upload payslips?

          • @5k: No I didn't, which was surprising.

There was no part for uploading anything. I guess they just trawled through my transactions.

            • @SnowDragon: They check bank transactions to validate your salary.

I applied for the card, and it asked me to logon to Comm Bank, it scanned through transactions for moneis coming from my employer. Else there was an option to upload payslip as well.

  • Maybe a really stupid question, but can you do a joint application? I’m just under the minimum annual income.

    • doesn't necessarily need to meet the minimum income requirement, it will look at your assets as well as a whole and credit history.

      • Thanks for info. I’m recently retired bit I do have a reasonable amount of money and shares. Will give them a ring.

I have SG amplify card, so am I still eligible for the bonus points offer?

    • +1

Even though one owns the other, i had no issues getting bonus points from both, one after the other. However, you can't do it with say SG and Bank of Melbourne.

  • +1

Would it work if i use it to pay my HECS through MyGov?

    • This would be such a smart way to have a backup method if it actually qualifies!

  • I signed-up for a similar deals a few years back (Altitude Black), and 12-months gone too fast. After that the fees kicked in at around $400! Was too busy to change card, had Direct Debit set-up and habit.
It's be reduced to $250 now but I still wonder why would I keep this card and paying that amount of fees? Sigh….

    • Cancel and get a pro-rata back on your annual fee.

      • How is the pro-rate works? can you even get your money back from bank??

  • Hi,

I'm a credit card newbie. I got my first credit card last year in December (CBA Basic Awards Card). It's been 8 months since I got my card. I've always paid the due amount on time.

    Had a few questions/concerns:
    1. How long should I wait before applying for a new credit card? Is there a general rule?
    2. Every time I apply for a credit card, does my credit score go down?
    3. If I've reached my point cap, should I just use the points on my current card, close the card and get a new card?
    4. I heard that spending also impacts the credit score. Just for an example, if my limit is 9000, and I spend 6000 but pay 5000 off before the statement period, would 6000 count as my credit utilization or 1000?
    5. I've read the credit card wiki guide here on OzBargain which was helpful. Although I'm still deciding what type of card should I get, or maybe get multiple cards. One for travelling (to avoid overseas charge) and one for points. So applying for two cards at the same time, is that considered bad?

Would really appreciate some input. Income is 60k.

  • +1
    1. No set rule. If I was. credit card churner may be one every three months.
    2. Credit score will go down with each credit card enquiry but will start to go back up after 6 months to 1 year if you applied for no other credit card.
3 Card churners usually go after the bonus point signup and cancel the card once they’ve achieved it.
    3. Not sure
    4. Amex David Jones is a good one with 45k Reward points or 22.5k Qantas points and you’re still able to apply for another Amex card afterwards.
Anz Travel Adventure another good one that pops up now and then and Citibank and Virgin Money credit card.

Thanks OP, I've been looking for a deal like this for months. I was actually looking at the Qantas CC website and it still shows up with the full annual fee, so this deal is definitely a great find.

  • perfect timing, thanks OP.

  • Hm, not sure if can spend $4K, might wait another month for Christmas.

wtf… does this actually work? any tricks to it?

      • interested to.. how?

      • and also follow the lead of the guy in China who did this just to get free entry to eat at the airport lounge. After a year he got a full refund on his ticket :)

    • Stock up on gift cards for groceries, you know you'll use them eventually.

      • That's a good one, thanks.

      • great idea - eGiftcard for Woolies would work right? have to get them at 5% off for Opal anyway!

  • If you choose Altitude Qantas, you are eligible for 2 Complimentary Invitations per year after you spend on eligible selected Qantas products and services each year using your Altitude Black Mastercard

Do we have to book through Qantas for this? Or can we book a Qantas flight through, for example, expedia?

  • What's the value of 80k Qantas points. Aka what can that get me in vouchers/equivalent/air miles?

    • -3

80K Qantas points gets you 80K Qantas air miles.

just make sure to make a calendar reminder to cancel the cards before 12 months comes up, I got last years promo and forgot to do it and had to pay the annual fees (Platinum $150 and $50 for qantas

Always curious to read that people earning over 75k can't spend $1350pm for 3 months…..your saving power must be immense!

    • Add the ability to Samsung/Google/Apple pay most cards into your wife's/significant others phone and it's even easier.

    • I cant find a reason to spend :(

    • As a single, $1,350/m on mostly discretionary is a lot. Most of my savings get almost immediately invested in shares. No car, rent is DDed, don't eat out that often. If I meal prepped instead of buying lunch it'd be even harder.

      • which shares?

        • +1

I actively invest primary in US shares through Interactive Brokers. My USD exposure is entirely hedged through an FX broker. The way the AUD has trended in the past few years however, I really wish I had just let my FX exposure run :)

Currently I'm in a mix of US pipelines, LNG infrastructure / shipping, Chinese internet firms. Relatively risky and mixed success at the moment, but I'm comfortable with my position medium term and have a high risk / drawdown tolerance.

Not AUS shares because they have (1) higher commission, (2) less liquidity, (3) less access to global firms, (4) fewer free fundamentals research resources e.g. SeekingAlpha, (5) lack the free screeners / analysis tools available like Finviz, GuruFocus for US shares.

          • @RedSky: Interesting :)
I have been researching getting back into shares and was looking at the US market too. I hadn't really thought much about points 4 and 5 but I'll be looking into that too.

  • I wish deals like this had the type in the title, or at least in the description. I looked at this wondering AMEX? Mastercard? VISA?

    • Fair point, I added mastercard into the description. Other than an amex i see zero difference between mastercard and visa and have no preference. Perhaps others have an preference?

      • Probably for Mastercards/VISA specific deals?

  • Does anyone know how fast the Velocity points are credited to your account once you hit your minimum spend?

  • I have applied the Westpac's Altitude Black World Mastercard last Oct 2018 however the application was declined.

Do i meet the rewards point condition? As i didn't have Westpac card in last 12 month even though i have applied for it.

    • I dunno why you would become excluded, you never became a westpac customer. so you should be good.
Just wondering though, when you were declined did you see a drop in your credit rating?

      • Didn't check at that time. However my current credit rating is excellent. So seems like didn't make much difference / impact.

  • thanks for posting - been looking for something to replace my Amex PE card for a while now so I'll give this a crack.

Does anyone know if all the Amex deals still come on the free Amex cards?

    Cheers

  • damn… already applied and got approved for other QFF CC for 60K bonus points for the same annual fee ($50)….

  • Just ditched this one… Come on ANZ, NAB, Bankwest, bring the fee free first year.

  • Does supplementary card holder get hit with credit check?

  • I have low rate visa card from westpac earlier this year. Am i Still eligible for this offer?

    • Just to save you from clicking on the link and reading the fine print:

^Bonus Rewards Points Promotion for Westpac Altitude Cards: The respective bonus points promotion is available when you apply and are approved for a new Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black card between 17th June 2019 and 15th October 2019 and spend the minimum amount of $4,000 on eligible purchases on an Altitude Black card or $3,000 on eligible purchases on an Altitude Platinum card within 90 days from card approval in one or more transactions.
Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, payments to the Australian Tax Office, BPAY, BPAY equivalent transaction, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account. The bonus Altitude Points, Qantas Points or Velocity Points will be added to your points balance within 12 weeks once you meet the eligible spend criteria. Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer. Qantas or Velocity Points earned during a statement cycle are added to your Qantas or Velocity Points balance on a monthly basis."

      • Wondering how closely they watch the eligibility of offer for holders of previous cards. Cancelled my Altitude Platinum recently, any chance I would still get the bonus point with the Altitude Black card?

        • Would think its done automatically by their system?

  • How strict are they with 75k earning? I've got well into 6 figures in savings and most approve me. I took a pay-cut so I could finish studies, but generally it's been ok in the past.

Otherwise I'll apply for the 60k bonus points.
Im going to run out of banks soon, currently hold ANZ, Virgin is done by tomorrow.
St George is approved, now I'll do Westpac.
What is left? NAB? Amex I'll be waiting 12 months 🤣🤣🤣

I need to keep a card with highest point earnings prefer no international fees aka hence I kept ANZ.

  • Conditionally approved and verified my income online - hopefully, i won't get a rejection letter in my mailbox a few weeks later.

    • Did you have to upload payslips?

      • Sort of - got the options to either upload them or allow them to read my credit transactions in one of my bank accounts that has been receiving salary payment. Did the later instead.

And~ then approved around 6pm. It's quite a breeze given that I was just rejected by AMEX today at $3k limit.

  • Westpac has contacted us to advise that the offer is only existing customers who have received the offer by email. Deal description updated.

    • So what for those who has already got (conditionally) approved?

      • It's possible that the bonus points/min spend won't be the awarded. It's best to check with Westpac directly.

        • +2

          i got approved yesterday

just been on the chat and they have confirmed that "you will receive an 80000 bonus Altitude, Velocity or Qantas points when you met the $4000 eligible purchases.
For the annual fee, you will not be charge an annual fee for the first year of your card"

          • @Numpty21: So it works/worked for non Westpac customers?

            • @[Deactivated]: I'm not a Wectpac customer now (was previously)

The link provided doesn't say anything about having to be an existing customer, it even provides information on how to become a Westpac customer.

              • @Numpty21: Not in T&C so can probably ignore, but best to ask if you've been approved.

                • +1

@nignucial: yeah i asked this morning in live chat
they confirmed that i was eligible for the bonus points and $0 annual fee 1st year.
have a copy of the chat should i need it down the track.

                  • @Numpty21: I think it's more of a desperate attempt to discourage people from applying once they knew they messed it up.

                    • @nignucial: Why stop ppl from applying?
The more ppl use their card, the more money they make.

                      • @lovepub: You tell me? What you said makes sense, but otherwise I couldn't find a reason for them to advise OzB that "the offer is only existing customers who have received the offer by email".

                        • @nignucial: Agree it is highly puzzling. I see in the address for the page it has "xl-dm", DM being a common abbreviation for direct marketing. But there is nowhere in the page that indicates it is limited in any way other than for existing/12 month prior holders of certain cards.

          • @Numpty21: Can you tell me how you get to the Chat page? Ive found it on my westpac app and also online, however from what I understand is that chat is a "Bot".

            • +2

@starburstyellow: I just kept typing “live chat” when talking to the bot and after a few repeats it said “ sorry we don’t understand would you like to speak with a banker”
Not sure if it’s 24 hr so maybe give it a go tomorrow

              • @Numpty21: Lol that genius. Ok will give it a try later in the Office.

                • @starburstyellow: That also works for the phone call centres that ask you to press 1/2/3 or tell it what you are looking for. Eventually if you confuse/answer wrong enough times it will get you through to a human
