    • I got approval for this card and have double checked about the offer with customer care. I had not received this offer via email.

      • Did they mention anything about first year annual fee in the approval email that you received?

        • No, however customer care confirmed that no fees applicable for the first year.

  • Great, thanks a lot.

  • +1

literally just searched "frequent flyer cards" in google and an ad for westpac 80,000 points came up.

  • Same here just checked. It's basically on their credit card page for new Westpac customers. Also something to note and not sure if it still works but previously you were able to get two Qantas or Velocity pass AND two Priority Pass pass as well. Not sure if that's still allowed anymore.

  • I'm waiting a week for my St George application, and the number to call had a recorded message saying they've experience a high volume of applications. I'd say Westpac are trying to slow it down a little? Haha

I might apply later this evening.

  • Oh man, just applied without seeing the update in the description (hadn't refreshed this page since yesterday), what are the chances that they'll still give me this deal?

    • If anyone is wondering, I still got the deal. I called up to activate my card and asked if I was going to be charged the annual fee and the operator said no. I quoted the application promo code that was posted in this thread when I asked.

  • Is this deal as good as the Westpac + Amex bundles?

  • I got an approval email with the below details.
    Credit fees and charges

Annual Card Fee $250.00 annual fee. Charged to your account following the first cash advance or credit purchase transaction and charged to your account in subsequent years on or after the anniversary of the first charge.

Rewards Program Fee $50.00 including GST, charged annually.
The Velocity Rewards Fee is payable when you choose the Velocity rewards program.
This fee is charged to your account following the first cash advance, credit purchase or balance transfer transaction, and charged to your account in subsequent years on or after the anniversary of the first charge, for as long as you remain in the Velocity program. This fee is waived for your account for the first year.

Seems like they are going to charge the first year $250 annual fee. :(
I am thinking of cancelling the card to avoid being charged.Any thoughts?

    • +1

If your credit check has already happened then I would just keep the card. Fight for your $250 off though

    • +2

Sometime they can't change standard email but if you call to confirm original offer that may do the trick for you. Get ref number in the end.

    • hmm not sure if it's a generic email or not, have you tried getting onto the live chat?

      • +1

I cant get on to Live chat.It seems to be an option only for net-banking customers.I may need to wait for the card to register for online banking and then try live chat.

      • Let us know!

    • +3

I just got off chat with them (though albiet i am an existing Westpac customer; I have a trading account with them).

      Westpac Representative Says:
For the current promotion of this specific card, annual fee will be waive for the first year and you will need to pay for the annual fee on the next year.
      My message:
ok, From what I understand on the forum (where I got the URL), Westpac has contacted the forum, and confirmed that the deal is only for "existing customers who have received the offer by email.". I have not received the offer via email.
      My message:
Can you confirm, in writing, if I were to apply using that URL, that I will not be charged $250 during my first year? Considering I have not received the promo via email?
      Westpac Representative Says:
Thank you for that clarification Starburstyellow. With the link that you provided, this is the current promotion under the card Altitude Black. This is only applicable for new application. The first year annual fee will be waive, on the next year onwards, you will need to pay $250 for the annual fee.
      My message:
Ok so considering I do not have the card, when I apply, I will be considered a new applicant. And thus will not be required to pay for the first year?
      Westpac Representative Says:
      That is correct Starburstyellow

      • am bit skeptical of them, if you ask me. Does the annual fee comment not come up just before you go through the T&C's etc?

      • +1

I called them up after they tried to call me to get me to upload my income documents. I asked about the promotional details and the rep said "80,000 points and annual fee waiver". I asked again at the end about the annual fee waiver and they said "100% sure the annual fee is waived for first year".

I will wait to see if i get approved and what it says about the annual fee. But as others have said they'd probably waive it if you made a big deal about it.

  • i got a different response for annual fee

Westpac Representative : Sorry I had to ensure this information first. As per checking, annual fee is at $250. The first year annual fee is waived if you have the premier advantage package offer which includes Home Loan package.

I actually did check that information online. Also reached out to our marketing on the current card offer and none was mentioned about getting your annual fee waived for the first year.

  • My card was approved on Tuesday and I recvd my card today…

    • Wow that was fast. Does that mean you will get charged the $250? :(

  • +2

Westpac contacted Ozbargain? What a load of Crap. I'd encourage anyone with an existing application to simply call and confirm their eligibility. It's that simple.

  • +5

On my saved application, I note that the promo code for this 80k bonus points + 1st year annual fee waiver deal is "WABDB". For those calling to clarify eligibility, quote this promo code and see what Westpac says. It's too late for Westpac to renege or change the scope of this promo code IMO. Would be poor form if they do so..

    • you an existing customer? where did you find that?

      • I always save a pdf copy of my application to use as leverage if required

        • So you applied? And where did you get that promo code from?

          • @bohn: Promo code was already pre-populated in the application form; I applied via the link in this thread

  • While Westpac called me to finalize the card, I asked the guy if I am eligible for the annual fee waiver and he say there is no annual fees for the first year. Maybe wait till you get charge the AF then try to dispute the fees

  • +1

So I'm not an existing WBC customer - should I bother applying for this promo?

Seems to be some mixed responses in here.

    • +1

      Would also like to know!

  • Annual Card Fee $250.00 -annual fee will be Charged to your account following the first cash advance or credit purchase transaction.
So I guess those who received the card and made their first transaction may be able to confirm whether it is waived or not.

  • +1

Just giving everyone my experience. I'm not an existing Westpac customer (before this). I applied on Tuesday before Westpac contacted OzBargain. Approved about 3 hours later after uploading pay slips. Card arrived yesterday. I had not activated it, and I called the application enquiries line (1300 366 867) just then. I told them I applied on the promotion website which states no annual fee and 80K bonus points and to clarify if this will apply, as I had been advised that it's only for existing Westpac customers. They confirmed that I was eligible for the points but not the annual fee waiver, even after I explained that the terms and conditions did not state that it's only for current Westpac customers.

As such I cancelled the card before activation. All up it look 25 minutes. The application was easy, but dealing with them afterwards was a pain. As mentioned above, best to call up and confirm obviously, as the annual fee was not waived for me.

    • I wonder if activating and being charged the $250 would be better, because then you use the screenshot of the link which makes no mention of these new 'terms' to get it waived.. or go to the ombudsman ;)

      • I think you'd get away with it if you're willing to go to the ombudsman considering the terms and conditions are contrary to what they are willing to provide. I just couldn't be bothered.

    • +5

Wow you cancelled after the credit hit? I woulda have fought to get that waived, or at least paid it. $250 is cheap for the 80K Velocity.

      • Isn't it $300 ($250 + $50)? Sill cheap for 80K points though.

  • +2

Why do people worry about credit hits? I have 5 credit cards! I actually forgot to cancel 2, and my credit is awesome. I'm not as crazy as some people tho.

I can never manage to get payslips uploaded, mine are double sided. My name, details on outside and inside is my pay. Banks never like it and request a PDF of my bank account! I feel like it's a major invasion? How do people upload payslips? Thanks

    • I too have 5 and my score is under 700 so I care? I understand the number is arbitrary but don't like the number to go down any more.

RE pay skips, I just send them mine, which is in HTML format.

      • Yeah, I think mine are available online so I might try get access to that.

    • Try applying 5 in the space of a month - then you'll know what's a credit HIT :P

    • Don't the banks see your other credit cards and go, 'hold on mate, there's a bit too much plastic to your name'? Or were they all done before the new thing that lets the companies see what your limits are on the other cards? ie. my score thing shows what limit each card has now, compared to before July this year.

I've only got two (longstanding) cards, but they've got large limits and I figured they wouldn't like to give me more credit with those already to my name

  • +4

My wife has received her card from this offer.
We phoned 1300 366 867 and they confirmed no fee for the first year.
She is an existing (very recent) Westpac customer who had no Westpac credit cards.
This seems to be the magic combination.

    • Thanks for the post , have bit more confidence to try then.

  • Well I am a Westpac customer in so far as I collected the Westpac baby bonus for my now one year old. So I hope that entitles me to more freebies like the first year free for this card :)

  • Declined. I wonder if it's because I held St George card recently.

    • +1

I have a St George Card and was approved for this card yesterday, so perhaps not. BTW my income was under $75K

  • Alright called in to westpac and they say the annual fee is "-" on their screen, so it's waived for the first year.

  • If this was really targeted im pretty sure they'd have to update the terms and conditions to explicitly state the customers is limited to

Now the only question is has anyone who previously held st George card in the last 12months been approved? I

    • I wasn't approved and cancelled my St George card in May. Might be because I already have too many outstanding credit cards though, but I do satisfy the conditions.

  • +3

Not sure if this helps but I applied and after pressing submit got a screen saying, "Westpac cannot offer you a credit card" and got taken to homepage. Not a Westpac customer.
Never been rejected for a card (6 figures, no mortgage/debt, new cc every couple of years, 2 cards at a time). Ah well.

    • +2

Also got the same screen as you.

      Meet Min income.
I have a MORTGAGE, no other debt.
Only 1 other existing CC (AMEX)

      Not sure why.

      • Might be auto denying non customers who use that link now?

        • Doubt it, as there seem to be others who are getting through fine.

A little annoyed though because this is actually a really good deal.

    • +2

Me three, I have high saving and put low spending (like $1500), never been reject with other cards (amex, coles) before this.

      • Did you credit file get accessed by them at all? I haven't applied for this one, but I usually get Equifax alerts when applying for a new card.

        • +1

I don't have access to Equifax but nothing shown up on my creditsavy yet and I have excellent credit score.

          • @lufee: My creditsavy rating is excellent but my equifax (veda) rating is just "Good - Risk Ranking:
41% to 60%"), for no apparent reason.

  • +2

I applied just before submitting this deal. I got approved on Friday and when I spoke to them on the phone they said there was no annual fee. I am not and have never been a Westpac customer

  • +1

    no apple pay
    that kind of sucks

  • +1

The link is still valid, should I take a chance to apply now?

  • This might sound dumb, but couldn't you make a case that you are an existing customer if you opened up a bank account with Westpac before applying for the credit card?

    • I didn't see your comment earlier - did you end up doing it?

  • I was declined for this one which surprised me: 130k salary, 1 other 2.5k credit card (through mortgage) with good credit history.

Phone support was unable to advise any reason why, maybe lending is tightening up.

    • maybe they didn't think they'd earn much $ from u ;)

    • Also declined, above salary requirement, good credit history although I have a fair bit of credit limit on existing cards. I was thinking maybe my low monthly expenses made me less appealing. Either that or they disqualified me based on recently cancelled St George card shrugs

    • I got the same, which is strange. I've never been turned down for a credit card.

    • I got sick of the crap the "assessors" were spinning me about the data they required. After supplying three lots of evidence and still not being enough i cancelled my application.

got the following response regarding eligible payments ……

"Thanks for waiting. Post Bill Pay and bpoint are Bpay equivalent transactions. So any transaction that is orgnised via third party payment platform is not an eligible purchase. As long as the transaction was paid directly to the merchant using the card, that will be an eligible transaction."

    Also
"Direct debits are considered cash equivalent though as it is a scheduled payment for a service or product."

  • I applied on 5/8 and received my card today.. Rang 1300 366 867 this afternoon and they confirmed I'm eligible for the 80K points and first year fee waiver.(I'm a new customer and mentioned the WABDB promo code on my application). However, they couldn't clarify if all government purchases, or just those to ATO, are ineligible for the points, nor could they refer me to where I could find out… I've got some council rates which would take me over the $4k spend and will call back if I can't find the answer online.

    • -1

I've since read through earlier comments and the general consensus is that local govt rates, paid directly to councils or via Post Billpay, are eligible for points and the T&Cs seem to concur.. Guess I'll find out soon enough..

      • -2

        Not correct
Check out my previous comment above

        • The T&Cs definitely refer to “BPAY payments; i.e. bill payments and other payments made through the BPAY Electronic Payments Scheme” as not eligible. However, I couldn’t find any reference to Post billpay and it’s my understanding that they're a separate entity to BPAY. Nor did I see anything about third party payments in the T&Cs..

When I first spoke with Westpac today I was told it depends on how each Council processes their credit card payments.. The second person I spoke with said all govt charges are ineligible, with no exception, but neither could give me anything in writing..

I've read online comments going back to earlier this year that said this card does earn points for payment of Council rates.. Westpac's T&Cs are dated June 2019 so not sure if there’s been a recent change?

          • +1

@Luigi Savadamoni: I have been told by a number of FI's that such charges do not count BUT when I pay them and then get the statement I can see they did, at least for earning points. They state usually that if you earn points on a spend it will also count for the bonus points. I have this exact card and have checked. For example for the period ending 4.8.19 I spent $1235. This included a payment of $494.54 to the State Revenue Office (VIC). I earned 926 Qantas points. So that is .75 per $ spend. Same payment in April,June and July also counted. One of these included a payment to Monash University and MYKI. All counted. I pay my council rates by AMEX (Westpac) via Post billpay and they are impossible to work out. Some months I will earn double points the spend other times less than the spend. If someone knows how they calculate I am happy to check. I pay 3 sets of council rates so it's a large amount. I think I get the points but cannot be certain.

    • Yes, very confusing regarding government purchases. Spoke to two people today (one on chat, one on phone) and they both said that they AREN'T eligible purchases however they couldn't show me anywhere in the terms and conditions that I agreed to that said this. They definitely aren't eligible for points earns but there's nowhere that says they can't form part of your eligible spend for the 80,000 points.

      • It seems to be that if you don't get points it doesn't count towards the spend.

        • I agree with this. But as I stated above I have been told a number of times that they do not count when I could see on the statement that they did. At least with VISA/Mastecard you can see very easily. With Amex they have told me they use different cut off periods for spend and points and I find it impossible to work out.

      • Update: I paid my Council rates via Post Billpay and directly via the Council website (I have more than 1 property) and can confirm that both payments accrued points. YMMV.. Also very happy to see that 80k points were deposited into my QFF account this month. As a sidenote, I didn't take up Westpac's Amex offer of 20K additional points as I'm still within 18 months of my previous Amex card cancellation..

        • My postbillpay did not count.
Westpac amex is not an amex issued card so forget the 18 month rule.

    • +1

      user name checks out.

Just called and confirmed I had no annual fee. The last card I had with them was in Aug 2018 - 55 day Visa card. When I got this card, my customer number was the same as before, so I suppose I’m an existing customer even though I didn’t have any active products for almost 12 mths!

    • Same situation here. I had a CC with Westpac which I cancelled 4 years ago. No other Westpac products at all but I still had a Customer number.

Received my card yesterday, called up confirmed $0 annual fee first year and 80k Qantas points.

  • Anyone know if buy lottery is considered a cash advance?

    • I don't know

    • It's not.

    • Pretty bad ROI if you are trying to meet the minimum spend

      • Nope not for me. Using work colleague's spend to meet my min spend.

  • I have Rego and council payment due but how do i know if they are eligible towards the minimum spend for getting the bonus points ? Thanks

    • -1

U can Westpac, they will let you know for sure.

  • Wonder if creating a westpac savings account first, and then applying for the card would satisfy the 'existing customer' component.

  • Ive been approved and received card only to have a hold on card while they request 3 months of bank statements. Application process says ID and 2 payslips or bank statements. Almost tempted to tell them to jam it, but they've done the credit check and another provider will still take two weeks. Cant wait to spend, get points and leave these idiots. Passed around to call centres in Australia, Philippines, and India.

    • Annoying. You could blur everything that isn't salary.

      • it's frustrating, he says need to see statements with the wages going in. im thinking of sent pay slips. where else do you think it goes. i'll spend the 4k get my points and gtfo.

        • Just got approved using 2 payslips.

  • Approved. Confirmed $0 annual fee. Make less than $75k, but do have an excellent credit score.

    • when did you apply? were you an existing/previous customer?

      • Not an existing customer. Applied 16th August. Received card and activated today.
