        • Ah ok, did you ring to check re annual fee or use the chat or what?

          • +1

@bohn: Rang and activated card. Checked $0 annual fee before doing so. Then registered online banking.

  • +1

Also, for those that haven't been an existing customer - you can sign up to a Westpac Choice transaction account and get a free $50 as well heh (after depositing some cash and doing 5 transactions). Then apply for the credit card.

  • Got an email to apply for $0 AF Amex and 20k bonus point but need $3k spend, shortly after getting this the mastercard.

  • +1

I applied for the card and received the welcome booklet today, the annual card fee clearly states "$0 for the first year…$250 thereafter". I've never been a Westpac customer before applying for this card!

    • +1

there is no welcome booklet. it's simply a piece of paper with card stuck on it.

      • -1

Nope … I just received it in the mail. You might want to call and ask?

        • -2

ask what? I'm telling you there is no booklet.

          • -2

@Dont Care: I give up, maybe someone else can humour you

            • -3

@chk: what are you crying about? you're banging on about a booklet. there isn't one issued with the card.

    • +1

Funny enough after reading these comments, I received 2 booklets including offer letter and TCs day after another

  • +1

Westpac customer. Got the card with $0 annual fee confirmed and a week later an offer on the Amex with $20k also for $0 fee. So all in, 100k points for $0 annual fee.

    • I think that card has an additional 3k minimum spend. Comes to a total of 7k in 3 months.

  • So what's the consensus - is the 1st year fee waived for existing or new customers?

    • +2

different customers have been told different things - I'm a new customer, so will let you know whether or not I am charged the annual fee once my first bill is generated. card activation date 9 Aug.

  • Can anyone please confirm
1, whether paying council rate in person at city council counts as eligible spend?
2, how do I know if my spend is eligible? For instance, if I spent 1k on all sorts of stuff, and on statement day I received 750 qantas points, is it a way to identify if they’re eligible spend?
    Thanks a lot

    • call up the rewards team, they can tell you if the eligible spend requirement has been met and how many points you have in your account..

I would know after being pushed across 3 different teams…..NAB is by far my preferred bank when dealing with queries.

  • I've been working for 5 weeks in my new job. Earning 1k per week. Should I bother applying for this or will I get rejected?
    Thanks

Edit. I realise it says 75k annual income.

    • I wouldn't apply.

  • To be eligible for the two complimentary Qantas Club Lounge invitations, you must first register and then use your Altitude Black Card in Australia to purchase selected Qantas products and services directly with Qantas.

What is the best way to get these passes without spending any coin on Qantas? any success stories?Understand one option would be to book & cancel a fully refundable fare, any other options? Thanks

    • +5

Once you've registered at https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au, you can pay to carbon offset a flight which counts as a valid Qantas spend.

It just asks for a destination, and it's not linked to an actual flight number or your travel, so you can get by with a dollar or so on a short route.

It took just under two weeks for confirmation and the passes to appear in the Qantas Invitations Portal after purchasing an offset.

      • Fantastic - will give it a go…thanks!

      • If there a way to do the same thing for Velocity?

      • Thanks! Was wondering why I hadn't received my lounge pass until I read your comment. Just paid $0.97 to offset MEL-SYD flight. Cancelling the card as soon as the passes are received.

        • what about the points?

          • @bohn: Points were credited when the first statement was issued

  • So is this confirmed that the bonus only applies if you have recieved the email?

  • +5

Have never been a Westpac customer.

Applied for Westpac Choice savings account 22 Aug. Got card and account up and running 28 Aug (will get $50 bonus after 5 card uses). Had to go to Westpac branch to ID.

Applied for this card 29 Aug using link from this deal and logging into my Westpac account during the application process. Got approved next day after 2 payslips and Sharesight eofy report provided. Got card delivered 3 Oct, activated. Spent $4200 on it 4 Oct.

Registered at loungepass.altitudeblack, offset a CBR-SYD flight for $0.54 at qantasfutureplanet.com.au to get lounge passes.

Will keep this updated with fees, passes and points. Plan to close all accounts as soon as 80k points received and lounge passes used.

    • That's helpful thanks for sharing :)

    • Just read this on the altitudeblack.com.au site:

Selected Qantas products and services are the following items purchased directly from Qantas: Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number), Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees.

Qantas Club Lounge Invitations will not be issued to customers who do not first register via altitudeblack.com.au prior to making the eligible card spend.

I still have no lounge passes and will probably not get them at this point as I spent the $4k before I registered for the passes. I also don't think the carbon offset is an acceptable spend so will have to wait until I buy a flight in the not so near future as I have no interest in a Qantas Club membership.

      • +2

There was a thread in australianfrequentflyer which stated that offset needs to be purchased for more than ONE dollar at qantasfutureplanet.com.au to get lounge passes. Not sure if that is valid.

        • Thanks for highlighting that. I bought a 11 cent carbon offset on Qantas (was stoked to find the lowest most possible spend) but haven't received the passes yet so called them and was told that the min spend needs to be $1.

    • Got $50 into my Choice account on 25 Sept.

      Still no points or passes.

I also signed up to the Black Amex as Westpac offered it to me via online banking Offers for no annual fee for first year, $3k spend and 20k QFF points. Why not?

    • 24 Oct
      Received 80k QFF points.

Called Westpac who said they can't answer about lounge pass and transferred me to Qantas who also said they can't help. Called Westpac back and got someone in the Australian call centre who was way more helpful. He said that it sometimes takes 90 days for the lounge pass to appear however he confirmed that it's very likely I need to spend on a Qantas flight not the carbon offset thing.

Westpac also said that the next fees due to be charged to my account were in 2020. I seemed to have successfully dodged the annual fee and Qantas fee.

      • The annual fee,if any, is on your letter of offer

      • Has to be over $1 for the trick apparently. Done so, but Westpac did mess up somehow, nonetheless got the pass and happy.

        • Yeah just brought another offset that was >$1, will see what happens

    • Got 2 lounge passes however not sure if this will help the carbon offsetters via qantasfutureplanet.

I paid $1.04 for a carbon offset on 29 Oct. My parents then needed to book Qantas flights on 2 Nov so I gave them my card. Their purchase hit my Westpac account on 4 Nov and 2 lounge passes were credited to my QFF account on 4 Nov.

Not sure which purchase triggered the lounge passes! However this confirms that if you spend the $4k before registering at loungepass.altitudeblack you will still get your passes from a Qantas spend.

      Time to cancel the card!

      • Just to confirm, the $1.04 offset you paid, was that for just some random flight or one you already booked? On https://www.qantasfutureplanet.com.au/ it only asks for name and email address so wasn't sure how that would connect to the QFF.

        • +1

          Random flight.
It connects by showing up as a purchase from Qantas on your cc statement.
Lounge passes are issued by Westpac contacting Qantas and telling them to give your QFF account 2 passes. Westpac should have your QFF number.

          • @Mr BoMBAStiG: Awesome. Thanks mate. Done a $1.04 offset now so will see how long it takes for the lounge passes.

            • @Slo20: Keep in mind, I might have got the passes from my 5 Sept carbon spend.

Hopefully you get the passes within a couple of weeks and that will confirm the >$1 spend requirement for carbon offset.

              • +2

@Mr BoMBAStiG: Update. Got my 2 lounge passes today so the $1.04 offset worked a treat.

                • @Slo20: Did you make it to your $4000 spend before applying for the lounge pass? I'm wondering if this makes any difference when it comes to claiming the lounge passes…

                  • +1

@forrester: Yeah I made my $4k spend in the first month. It shouldn’t make a difference though on being able to get the lounge passes.

                  • @forrester: As I mentioned, you technically need to register for the lounge pass before you reach the min spend and do Qantas spend. Doesn't seem to be enforced as I registered for lounge after min spend achieved.

                    • @Mr BoMBAStiG: Agreed, I reckon the system is unlikely to be sophisticated enough to assess whether the spend has been reached or not

  • Does anyone know if I will be eligible for the Qantas bonus points if I received Qantas bonus points from a St George Amplify Signature within the last 12 months (St George being a subsidiary of Westpac and all)?

    • +1

Yeah that’s not an issue. They still operate separately. I had St George previously and switched to this card over a month ago.

  • +1

Declined, then a few days later approved for $13400, card arrived today. Slightly confused but not complaining!

    • Weird.

      • Opposite here, approved 20th August but after follow up on card, been told I need to do 100 point ID check and provide notice of assessment plus individual tax return as well.

        And still going on..

        • +2

Be prepared for them to string you along (for at least 2 weeks), extract every private document from you in a piecemeal fashion (because the verifications team can't read a bank statement), and then say your application was not successful. Absolute waste of time. I will not recommend Westpac.

          • +1

@JJlikes2eat: I spent 15 minutes reading through a tax return with an agent on the phone because they couldn't manage to do it themselves, but eventually got approved

            • +2

@finnybro: Mine is approved after lot of pain.. they don't understand fortnightly payslip, bank statement, tax return.

Have to make complaint about the process. Ay first complaint mnger agrees with me later back flipped saying it is what is. They don't intervene with credit Dept,.. I have to provide and keep providing until they are satisfied.

So I stopped chasing them, now I can see bank statement of the credit card came in online but no news of card approval Directly to me.

  • Already received bonus points in my last statement. Also confirmed no credit card fees for the first year

    • Did you get charged a $50 rewards fee?

      • Yup

    • Can I ask when you applied and subsequently met the spending criteria? And did you have an existing account with them before applying?

      • I applied with the link in this thread so mid August, met the spend within 3 weeks after so 4 weeks in total. I've never had a Westpac account before this

        • Thanks for that - I'm pretty similar to you so might get in contact with them soon since I want to cancel asap haha

          • +1

@nemaya: ok good luck, dont forget to claim the lounge passes before u close ur account!

          • @nemaya: You can cancel online.

            • @bohn: I meant that I'm going to contact them in regards to the bonus points - thanks for the tip though, I didn't know you could!

  • +2

Bonus points received - within 2 months statement. Points posted and transferred to SQ. Then closed the CC.

    • Ditto, but waiting for lounge passes to arrive first before closing

  • I just received my first statement. I must say, the Westpac statement is so ugly.

I didn't get charged an annual fee and didn't get my points.

Also, on my statement I paid some council rates, one was via postbill pay using PayPal, and the other council used Bpoint.
Neither of those transactions earned velocity points ;(

I chatted online to Westpac but they tell me I have to call the Black team, will have to call later. Bit of a shame if the council payments do not count.

Edit: I know the council rate payments didn't attract points as closing balance - council rate payments x .75 = the points I received on the statement.

    • +1

I've never heard of PostBillPay using Paypal to pay council rates not being accepted for points.

      • Actually I see a user mentioned it earlier in August, but was downvoted.
Oh well, I'll get council to refund it.

        • I think that might have been me 😀
I went to the council office and paid via EFTPOS and got 0.75 per $ spend for that payment in my first statement.
Should also count towards the bonus points spend but I can’t confirm that until next statement as I’ve just gone over $4k now.

          • +1

@Numpty21: It will count if you got the points I think.
Their systems are improving, not that long ago postbillpay was always a way to get around paying rates etc.
Next time I'd probably pay in person.

  • Can anyone confirm you still get the points if you're not targeted? I am not an existing Westpac customer.

    • sign up to a free choice transaction account, earn $50 from that, then signup to the credit card.
      https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/bank-accounts/tr…

In answer to your question, many people have got the points who were not targeted - but I think it's better to earn an extra $50 from the choice account as well. That's what I did.

  • Got approved few days ago, just waiting for card in the mail. Is there anyway I can tell what Rewards im signed up to? I did sign up using the URL and picked Velocity (and put my VFF number on). Would hate it to revert to altitude.

    • It has Velocity written on the card.

      • Ok thanks. Will wait for card to arrive then.

      • No card in mail yet again today. But dug futher on the website, does say what "type" of card it is. all good. Thanks again.

  • Finally got my 'free' $50 for signing up to the Westpac Choice transaction account before applying for this credit card. Now I can close the Choice account.

    • How long did it take to get the $50?

      • +1

I can't see exactly when I opened the account, but it has been around 5-6 weeks.
I just transferred $2000 in and out from another account using payid to avoid the $5 monthly fees.

  • +2

I got my first statement last week, spent over 7k to get 5400 QFF, no bonus points earned and no $50 fee yet. Hoping statement 2 sorts it out.

    • Was it spent on qualifying purchases? I called the rewards team and they were able to advise whether I had the met the bonus points before the statement was issued

      • +1

Not sure, will have to call them I guess.
I'd have thought since all purchases earned points they would be qualifying towards the $4k spend?

        • +1

I'd have thought since all purchases earned points they would be qualifying towards the $4k spend?

          you'd think so.

      • +1

Please let us know if any items are not eligible, sometimes it's difficult to figure out.

    • Exactly the same outcome. Spent $5K on eligible purchases, no $50 fee and no bonus points on first statement.

Rang westpac they confirmed i was eligible for the bonus points and just stated it could take up to 12 weeks after meeting the criteria to get the bonus points. Doesn't feel right though as last time i got the bonus points straight away….

Also the qantas lounge passes have not come through yet either, even after registering via the website and booking a qantas flight.

  • Just spoke to them and they confirmed I would have met criteria as points received already are on same criteria as minimum spend.
Got the same 12 weeks and even 180 days (90 spending period + 90 after).
Will just keep any eye out I guess.

Thanks for reminder to lodge for passes 😀

    • +1

Wow, they're really trying to make us keep the card some time before cancelling ;) They hope we forget about churning altogether!

  • Got my 80k bonus points! Haven’t recieved any fees as of yet (not even the $50 velocity fee).

    • +1

Same got my 80K points with the second statement and no $50 fee. (Note i achieved the $4K spend in the first month but had to wait another month for the points)

I can confirm that this offer is also not targeted as i was not an existing Westpac customer nor did i receive this offer via email (mods may want to update this post?)

      • I met about half the min spend in the first month and the other half in the second month. That 2nd bill was dated the 8th October and the bonus points came in on the 11th October.

I was also not a Westpac customer, doesn’t mean they haven’t changed it now. I applied moments before posting this deal.

        • I rang up and they told me it was targetted. The apply screen gets you to a sign on screen. If you aren't a Westpac customer how did you get past that? Thanks for any info

          • @try2bhelpful: That is new, never used to do that. Just create a Westpac Choice account (which gives you the chance to earn a free $50) and then you can apply.

  • +2

Finally got my points too. Also no velocity fee charged.. sweet.
    Churn and burn baby.

    • when did you get your points ? In 1st stmnt or 2nd ? How long then does it take you for those points to arrive in Velocity. I need to book 4 reward tickets and needing anther 20k points. Hoping to get the points soon.

      • Took about 4 days after the second statement.

  • +1

To the people who cancels the card after getting the points. Does this affect you applying for other credit cards later on? I mean in the credit report they are going to see that you hold the card for a very short time and clearly just for the bonus points. How long do you wait until you apply for the next card ?

  • Received my 80k Qantas points on second statement, nothing on $50. Time to pay up and cancel this one.
Still waiting for ANZ black which is now 3 statements in after hitting spend.
Now to find a new card for this quarter, Citi looking like best choice right now ?

    • Which citi? I was thinking Coles 100k flybuys which is a citi product.
