American Express Velocity Platinum Card - 60,000 Bonus Velocity Points with $3,000 Spend in 3 Months, $440 Annual Fee

110

So American Express have launched this offer along with its refreshed card benefits. The key changes includes unlimited Virgin Australia lounge access when flying with Virgin Australia as the Primary Cardholder. This can be good for people who will lose Gold status as part of the upcoming changes, however, it does not include unlimited guest access (you will have two guest passes a year). The requirement to get status credits has been split into two parts so people who don't quite meet the 50k spend can now get something.

Considering the VA Lounge pass is $450 a year this wouldn't be bad for a solo traveller who doesn't have status.

• 60k Velocity Points when you apply online by 21 January 2025, are approved, and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases on your new American Express Velocity Platinum Card within the first 3 months. T&Cs apply. Available to new American Express Card Members only.
• $440 (Up from $375).
• Earn up to 1.25 Velocity points per dollar spent.
• Complimentary Virgin Australia return domestic flight each year.
• 50 status credits for first $25k spent and another 50 for next $25k spent.
• Complimentary Virgin Australia lounge access when flying with Virgin Australia as the Primary Cardholder
• Two complimentary Virgin Australia lounge passes for guests each year.
• Complimentary travel insurance.
• Offer not available if you have held an American Express-issued card in the past 18 months.

Note: Registration is required to get unlimited lounge access so please remember to register.

I got 130,000 (100k + 30k bonus) velocity points for this around 9 months ago. Not to mention the virgin lounge in Sydney can be a worse option than the food court if it’s peak hour.

    • Yes, I signed up for the 120k bonus offer but there's no guarantee that it will come again given the declining state of card offers (I'm looking at you NAB for acquiring all the competition).

This card will be good for those looking to get status now that the Velocity changes are in place or get lounge access.

      • Yeah I hear ya. Just a shame to see it get this bad, especially with a hefty annual fee

    NAB 60000POINTS $1000spending and $95 fee

The selling point here isn't necessarily the points. It's the lounge access and status credits for $440 which isn't bad considering the upcoming changes to Velocity.

Have you been in a Virgin Lounge lately?

        • Yes, the mornings have been quite busy but overall I can't say it's bad. Considering I haven't paid it's better than sitting in the crowded food court in Sydney.

        • How are they?

          • @mbck: imo they are okay. Better than Qantas clubs but not as good as Qantas business lounges.

        • Yeah, it's pretty dire.

IMHO though Qantas Club < Virgin Lounge < Qantas Business Lounge.

      • Selling point is the points because if you're an existing cardholder, then the bonus points aren't redeemable.

    • Yeah, for churners NAB is a much better option. Even if you fly frequently I can't see the value in the lounge access as you should pretty quickly make it to Gold which gives you that anyway.

Can't see this card being attractive unless you have churned everything else available. Even then, I think the annual fee makes it unattractive. HODL!

      • Yes, but now Gold status will be a LOT harder to obtain for many flyers when the changes come into effect.

  • does the lounge access apply to current holders?

    • +2

Yes, I believe it does because they have updated the benefits page for existing cardholders. Do keep in mind that existing cardholders will lose the Centurion Lounge access on 24 April 2025 so we do lose something.

Question about existing card holder: once registered, does the $3000/3 months spend need to be made or not ?

        • Not sure, but my understanding is one purchase needs to be made after registration. Don’t quote me though I’m not AMEX :).

  • How do you register for the unlimited lounge access? Can't find it anywhere (I'm an existing card holder so wondering if this only applies once mine renews???)

    • +3

Click on the benefits link which @just-human linked above. You will find the “Enrol VA Lounge Access” button under the Airport Lounge Access tab.

  • What is amex going to do with existing escape card holders since its no longer available to apply for? Hope they upgrade it to a gold card

$3,000 minimum credit limit is worth mentioning.

  • Also lost the centurion lounge if you traveling to airport that have one.

    • Are you sure about that? I can't see this card listed on the website for centurion access

      • Is not in this new offer.
Not sure will it be remove for old card.
Checked with chat that the old card still have access.

  • Is it worth changing from Platinum reserve to this card since they are going to increase my annual fee from $300 to 400 soon?

  • I've just lost Gold status, so keen to kind any card that would get my lounge access (plus wife +2yr old kid)

  • I was waiting to see if the benefits from the refresh would outweigh the current benefits from Explorer card though, the new changes/offers doesn't look enticing.
