Who in their right mind would pay $139.95 for that though??

    • +19

I know, I'm thinking is $31 worth it including postage

    • +2

      Yep. Pretty silly promotion.

    • +21

I've had other toastie makers and they die fairly quickly within a few years even other designed Breville one's.

This classic design (70's original) is actually really high quality, I have one and I wouldn't be surprised if it outlives me and I'm not that old. It's literally made how they used to be, to last.

If you got one at this price it'd be an absolute steal.

      • +6

Who knows how this one's made though.

        • +3

Oh I think we all know how this one's made: with sub-par quality and planned obsolescence, front and centre.

          • +2

@KangaDrew: Soooo many products these days are made to look good with some fancy features on the outsides,

but often have one or a few parts that are weak and break. Some expensive goods are good and

last the distance, but many don't live up to the expensive name and advertising.

        • I don't think you know Breville very well.

I was so impressed with their products I ended up investing in them.
The share price is criticised as expensive too, but they continue to outperform because they have a big R&D budget and continually improve their products.
Customers probably winge about the price, but they keep coming back.

I reckon they should offer these deals to shareholders who demonstrably show more respect :)

      • It's the Model M of toastie makers

    • +6

Hmm! I guess maybe they just found a pallet of old stock while moving warehouse!

    • +2

These are occasionally on sale for about $99 on Amazon. Totally worth it. Cast iron not that non stick coating stuff. Quality is very good.

      • +9

It has a non stick coating - pfas, just not pfoa. States so in the description.

        • +2

Yeah. They are non stick and mine came off recently and they replaced under warranty.

    • +1

I've had one of these for probably 10 years. Good quality item but can imagine I paid anywhere near that rrp. Steal at that price for the quality and longevity.

    • +3

it's Breville not Kmart. Maybe not 139 but def worth 80+

    • If you're the 101th customer.

      • 101st you mean

        • Hmm you know what, I knew something was wrong when I typed it but somehow my brain couldn't be bothered.

  • +3

As someone who owned one and loved it till it died as a kid, they didn’t have the stupid line through the middle that cuts the sandwich in half, so you could fill them properly with anything . “The Bog One” is better

    • Yeh whats with that?. Stupid design choice and the pricing is absurd.

      • +2

        Breville says that

        Seal and cut
The Original seals in all of your sandwiches ingredients and carefully cuts them into tasty triangles with a simple, single motion.

    • +1

Isn't this the and unit and it has a line in middle to cut the sandwich in half

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Breville-BSG1974PSS-Original-Brush…

      • +5

The line is dumb. You can put a whole egg with ham or left over pasta in them when they don’t have the line .

        • +8

It would not make jaffles if there's no line in the middle?

          • +7

@lily99: thats what i was thinkin

might as well be a sandwich press

            • +1

@capslock janitor: I remember sandwich presses were so expensive…. when we finally got one and I used it the first time, I thought what the heck - this is just a toaster that you can stick your whole sandwich in.

I haven't had a jaffle in decades. I really want one right now.

          • @lily99: A traditional jaffle iron doesn't have the line in the middle, just the sealed edges.

        • -3

The cut line doesn't stop you putting those things in.
          Are you to scared to?

    • +3

      “The Bog One” is better

      Sounds like it might smell

      • +5

I had one, it was shit

    • Amen to that. I've been looking for one without the diagonal cut. I want my jaffle sealed around the crust not diagonally thru the soft bread.

      • -2

This one does both, it's more efficient.

        • How is it more efficient if I don't want the diagonal cut/seal?

      • +100 me too. Any luck in finding one?

  • +5

Can get one at kmart for $10, does the same thing

    • The one that we bought for $7 (I think) 15 years ago is still going strong with a few uses per week.

    • +4

I'd rather pay $20 for a branded one than (profanity) Anko that will probably burn my house down or something

      • +1

yea but 100 items not alot

    • -3

Wouldn’t be ozbargain without somebody piping in to say that a cheap and nasty Kmart product does the same thing. Why don’t you try it and then see if you still want to make that claim? Because you absolutely won’t.

    • We just use our airfryer. Don't need another appliance. Could use your frying pan also. If you must have one just go to an op shop, they always have sandwich makers.

      • I'm really interested what a jaffle made in an airfryer would be like

    • +1

Kmart one is trash. Bought one and it broke the same night on the first try.
Cheap plastic broke from the outside. You can probably fit in a slice of cheese (i.e. cannot load much in there) with basic small bread slices (not Helga's/similar brands).
Bought the Breville "The Original" instead 5 years ago, still going strong. Same model my parents had (20+ years going strong).

  • -1

I hope it comes with Electricity
(at a 1974 tariff) for the life of the appliance.

    • +1

      Why?

  • WOOHOO!

  • +15

"The sale runs between 12pm-1pm"….it would be lucky to run 10 seconds.

    • +4

Only 100 units - just have to put it into the cart to qualify - bots will take them all.

      • +3

Yeah it's insane, you probably just need a time based autoclicker and even if you don't program the code will be pasted all over the web.

Clearly, Breville is still in 1974.

        • Breville doesn't care who gets the 100, just as long as a million try.

  • +1

I bought my breville jaffle maker for 30 bucks years ago…no sale that was just the price. Wtf makes this 140 bucks

    • +4

      Years ago…watermelon was 20 cents a kilo…

    • +4

      Inflation

    • -1

I remember when breville was a mid- low range product.. they had a few pricey things but you could easily pick up a kettle or a slow cooker for under $60. Was under 8 years ago, then they went fancy and now you’re looking at designer kettles that are crap.

  • +3

Personally prefer a toastie maker, as the cheese and tomato doesn't burn you.
Whereas these, tomato heat gets you every time.
    Thanks, but no thanks.

    • +10

Vent each triangle and wait a minute or two before eating and it’s fine. Delayed gratification.

      • Vent how

        • +4

          vent
          noun
an opening that allows air, gas, or liquid to pass out of or into a confined space.

        • +1

          Toothpick

    • Sandwich press?

    • That's what's great about a jaffle. Eat it very carefully. Not like these sandwich-presses that never get a decently-loaded sandwich hot enough.

  • +2

I am on my second one of these, the non stick coating started coming off the first one and I had to make a warranty claim to get it replaced. The 1974 is better than the mid level $50 breville jobs, but you just need to make sure you always butter the bread that goes on the non stick side or it will eventually stick and peel off.

    • I read above that it's cast iron. So it's coated in pfas?

      • I read on the Breville site that

The wide sealing edges on the PFOA-Free non-stick cooking plates minimise food spilling into hard to clean places.

    • +2

Same, I bought 2 of these and just over the 2 year mark, the coating along the cutting edge starts to flake. Never used any metal utensils on it either but we do use it almost daily for school lunch box. It is not cast iron, but no stick coating. Tried calling breville for warranty but their previous warranty was only for 1 year and they just kept dodging taking liability for a product that should last beyond 2 year for the price they charged. I do love the design though, just sad that it isn't made to last and the support is non existent.

      • If you register the 1974 once you purchase it you get 3 years warranty. Initially they told me must have been my fault, I said I never used metal or wooden utensils on it, said I buttered the bread, and refered them to their reviews where another person had the same experience. They made me cut the cord on the old one, take a photo and they sent me a new one, so far so good, old one lasted a bit over a year before, like you, it started sticking on the cutter of the top lid part of the press, the bottom was fine. Guessing the originals back in 1974 were made in Australia, these are from China, but still better than the $50 versions they sell, they last a few months before they stick

        • Gees they sound a bit nasty making you cut the cord and show evidence

          • @arcticmonkey: I think that's pretty standard, I've had other companies ask for the same. I don't mind, the alternative is to return it for them to assess and send a new one, but that's a lot more annoying to have to do

        • I remember once standing in line at Kmart returns counter, with the person in front wanting to return a sandwich maker that was very-not-non-stick and brought in in with evidence. They refused to accept it. It was a fun debate though.

I think the cutting the cord and sending photo is a more practical approach.

  • +10

So I had a flat-plate toastie maker for the longest time and I thought I'd buy this 2nd hand to try out.

Basically, I don't use this at all because it's a bastard to clean compared to the flat-plate. Just so many grooves to try and get into, and it being non-stick you really don't want to use anything that might scratch it. Just didn't make it worth the effort.

With that said, if you don't really care about that, then it's a great product.

    • +3

I've had one of these for about 6 years, use it multiple times a week and never had to clean it with more than a paper towel. Great quality. Great machine.

    • +1

Yeah I was considering trying to get this sale till I read your comment. Sounds very relatable.

Just need this bad boy to go on sale now!
      https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/breville-the-toast-and-melt-s…

      • Yep, that's the one I have! It's incredible

    • +2

Yep. Same. I threw my jaffle maker out when we moved as we prefer the sandwich press instead. Easier to clean.

A guy I used to work with would put a piece of baking paper in the office sandwich press and put a piece of chicken in to cook it (work kitchen didn't have a stove / oven).

      • +2

        That's savage office etiquette

      • I worked with someone who also did this…except he didn't use baking paper.

I never used that sandwich press.

  • Had one for years and by far the best jaffle maker. For that price its a no brainer.

  • +1

Wouldn't mind knowing what delivery would run us, 19.74 is great, until there's another 19.74 and I remember I have two George Formans, a couple Kmart jaffle makers, three air fryers that also make a decent toasty, and probably some other stuff too. Oh and a sandwich press in a drawer somewhere.

  • what is this used for

    • +5

      To make jaffles.

  • +5

If I had to choose only one, flat toastie maker all day. And not one that has grooves on one side, flat on the other! Easier to clean and you can use fancy bread or toast things that aren't square.

But this is a bit of a throw back.

  • So this is jumbo sized and won't work for anything other than super sized bread they mention I'm the description

    • Works fine with Coles sandwich bread for me, the protein one.

    • -2

Which is pretty much all bread these days?

  • +1

    Noon AEST or AEDT???

    • +8

      High noon. So 4.20

    • +3

Who knows, Elizabeth Mcdonald (the author of the Delicious article) is from NSW, where Timezones are just arcades.

  • Don't forget about the shipping fee. The free shipping is only offered on orders above $49

  • Australian appliances lol

  • -2

    Glorified sandwich press.
