    Still waiting on 300k points..

    • Yeah same

    • Wasnt it 350k before?

      • +2

        325k, i believe. That’s what i got last year.

        • wonder if this deal will ever be back

    • You can now get 275k with some referral links

      • +1

        How?

        • +1

Someone should be able to share their referral link. I don't have Amex Platinum unfortunately

          • @IMBI3: Just tried, links are filtered and removed. But the 75k bonus is for the referrer, the referee gets 200k flat points.

            • @dean-eth: Presumably some referral links have an elevated offer for the referee. Need to make sure that you're getting the 275K points before hitting submit, obviously.

  • +7

    that annual fee though

    • +4

      Worth the benefits

    • Last year I got 325k points which can be converted to 4 Singapore airline business tickets to Southeast asian countries (like Vietnam). $1450 is completely worth it.

      • From above "This converts to 100k frequent flyer points with most airline partners incl Qantas and Virgin" did you get around 150k Qantas / Virgin points from receiving 325k Bonus Membership Rewards Points? Seems a little light for 4 overseas business tickets?

NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card gets you 90k points and $295 annual fee which seems better?

Unless its not just about the points

EDIT: Just read comments further down and seems to be about a lot more than just the points

        • 325k Amex points converted to 162.5k Krisflyer miles (2:1 rate). Each ticket is 40.5k miles so that means 4 tickets. Did Amex change the conversion rate?

          • +1

@hawkeye93: 40.5k miles is from Perth, Melbourne/Sydney etc. are 68.5k. SQ didn't change the miles required, but yes Amex changed the conversion rate. It's 3:1 now instead of 2:1. The 325k miles will only be worth ~108k miles now, if you haven't already converted them.

            • +1

@squarepants: Lucky that I converted already when the bonus reached my account.

      • Hard pass. Got 320k velocity points thru churning other cards and paid about $150 all up in annual fees.

Guess it may makes sense if you can utilise all you can on the card offers

        • Yeah, but I was still waiting for that 12-18 month cooling off period to pass for other banks (NAB, citi, Westpac, St George,…), so just took this Amex card in the mean time.

          • -1

@hawkeye93: Some you can get by earlier. NAB was supposed to be 18mnths but I got one at 13 months

            • @adrianhughes1998: You sure? Still got the bonus point?

              • @hawkeye93: Yes, I got the bonus points. Was tipped by someone who commented that it had worked for them here on ozbargain and I tried and it voila, worked for me too.

                • @adrianhughes1998: But wouldn’t that be a risk as you don’t know whether you would get the bonus until after meeting the spending requirement? What if you don’t receive anything?

                  • @hawkeye93: It's got nothing to do with that mate. It's the card approval. They're gonna knock you back if you're not eligible for the card with their stated timeframes.

    • -1

Tell me you haven’t done any research without telling me you haven’t done any research.

  • +1

Some referral links are showing higher. 225K is semi-regularly showing.

    • +1

Which social media, can you share, thank you.

      • It's not popular among Australians and I already got unfriendly comments, best to not say it then.
I'm just disclosing the highest points I can see, you might get lucky if you check all the referral links and see which one is highest.

    • What is this "social media" you speak of? You posted this on the Qantas deal as well, stop fishing for attention.

      • I'm telling the highest points I can see, if you have a friend who's got amex you can also get a link with higher points. You need to calm down.
This social media is Asian based so it's not popular here. I already saw 4 posts on it showing 275k bonus.

      • -2

BTW I posted on qantas deals because there wasn't a deal posted for platinum at that time and I want to know if there's impact on loan with another credit check. I don't see what's wrong to reveal that currently there are indeed higher points available but just different referral links give different points.

      • -3

Also, is ozbargain "attention" redeemable for cash or any $ value? LOL.

  • i know they do a credit check for approval, but since this is a charge card, does anyone know if this will then be a consideration for other credit cards in the future? i.e. there would be nothing to declare for this card in "current credit limit" right?

    • +1

I am not sure if I understand it correctly, but I think the credit check process will be rigorous, below is the one of the Key information

      No Pre-Set Spending Limit.
No pre-set spending limit does not mean unlimited spending. Your purchases are approved based on a variety of factors, including current spending patterns, your payment history, credit records, and financial resources known to us.

      • yep the check to get this card is expected.

I'm more wondering the impact after one's got the card. i.e. how would that "no pre-set spending limit" appear or impact future credit checks

        • +1

It’s a valid question, what happens when you go for a home loan? How does CBA calculate the amount of credit you hold like they would with a credit limit?

        • +1

I have two charge cards and have had for many years. They have never been included in any of my home loan applications and once when I asked the bank advised that given I cannot hold a balance charge cards aren't included in their credit checks… In addition when you check Ilion of other credit records they aren't included in your file.

          • +1

@jhaley3180: I recently went through this with uBank. They got a bit confused with the concept but in the end it didnt cause me any hassels.

      • As others have said, this does not come up as an issue on loan applications as it's not a "credit" card. You have to pay in full every month.

      • From AusFinance on Reddit, it seems that many people get approved without submitting much information at all.

    • +1

Yes, it depends. I recently applied for another card and they had a seperate section to declare last statement of charge card.

Otherwise in your credit report, it will only show a limit of $1

      • this is excellent information to know.. Appreciate it!

  • +2

Whats everyone thoughts on this - are the regular bonuses worth it? The annual fee is awfully high..

    • If you travel a fair bit then yes. If not then the Explorer may be better suited.

    • +10

Yes, only if you are going to stay luxury and travel a fair bit. Otherwise no!
.it's very easy to make up for the 1500 fees.

I listed the breakdown here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/820980

      Here's the breakdown:

      $450 travel credit
      $400 Dinning credit
$400 Accor membership - 1 free night + we dined at several places which got us 50% discount.
      Amazon $84
$150 Mr Porter, really didn't want it but because it was free credit, we used it.

4 overseas trip- travel insurance retail was about $1600. I understand it might not match the top retail cover but platinum has a top credit card insurance.

My phone screen broke - got paid $400ish for it

Stayed at FHR hotels multiple times - got about $4k and over just out of this program

Cashback offers- sure everyone else got it too on cheaper cards but it's still a value : $400-500

Spent $150k on the card in a year so that's 337,500 Points. Cash value $1600rough. Airlines FF value atleast double or triple.

Hilton honours and Marriott membership. Free breakfast at HH is a very good value

There Virgin Membership too, I didn't get to use it much as I already have a status. But I was able to lend a card to my in-laws and they thoroughly used it. Technically that's 4x memberships if required.

      There's priority pass for 2 - valued at $500 each I think.

There's plenty more to it that will easily add up. You have to tap into every aspect to get value out of it. But also it's fairly easy to just cover the fees

      • Thanks for that.

      • +1

It's crazy that the business version of this card is lacking so much in benefits but cost more in annual fees.

        • But you also need to see, on an average Business card holders spend about 50k above per month, that's a lot of points.

          • @abs898: I don't see how that's relevant. The more is spent through the card, the more Amex also benefits as they get a cut off the fees that are charged by banks for accepting Amex.
The product in this case is Platinum and there's a bunch of benefits that makes it a "Platinum" card and Amex charged a premium for it, that's fair enough. But you can't market the same product to business clients, charge more for annual fees and offer way less benefits.

If you look at the US Amex business platinum, it offers similar benefits in value compare to their consumer card.

            • @zoombie: The product you are looking at is AU Platinum Personal.

Platinum Personal and Platinum business aren't the same product just because they have platinum attached to their name.

You can say the same thing about electricity, internet and literally any other utilities where offers and price is different for business customers.indont see this being any different. Cost is higher for business customer because their throughput is higher.

I am not going to comment on the US market because it's saturated there and in AU market there is no other card that comes even within a mile, so they have a monopoly.

      • Thanks for the break down. Is it also worth considering the fees incurred from using amex?

Is it fair to say that amex attracts an additional fee above what you would see with other cards.

Even an additional 1% would be 1.5k on your $150k spend.

        • +2

Not really, most bigger stores don't charge any eg woolies, Coles, none of the shopping stores either.

With Amex's shop small program, even cafes around the corner get subs from amex and they don't pass on any extra cost.

I would say it would be about $500 on what I spent in a year. You get points on that 500 too. Still has been worth every surcharge paid.

Most places that would pass on the surcharge, in my experience would also charge extra for any kind of credit payment. So it could be something like 0.9% for Master Visa and 1-1.5 for Amex. Again really varies.

          • +1

@abs898: Not in reality , other than supermarkets, department stores are servos, you get belted still, most small business charge over 1% to use Amex or they don’t accept at all, lots of pubs belt you for using it now

            • +1

@Onemoredeal: In my experience most places these days charging an AMEX surcharge apply the same amount to VISA and Mastercard.

Acceptance in general is much better than a few years ago

              • @Randolph Duke: Agreed. If a place is passing on the surchargez they will do it for visa and MasterCard too. Maybe slightly lower but marginal.

              • @Randolph Duke: Only places using square charge the same rate as the rate is fixed for all cards, any other business charges you the Amex rate which is always at least 0.5% higher, and to suggest otherwise is wrong . I have an Amex

      • I thought Mr Porter was being scrapped from this calendar year?

        • Yeah it has, it's an old comment I copied over

      • Sounds great so far. Regarding supplementary card what facilities dose your in-laws get. If you can list it like above that would be great.

        • None of the credits obviously as they are for the primary card.

They get all hotel statuses, FHR, biggest is Virgin lounge access.

          • @abs898: Ok. Only for virgin lounges? Not Priority pass? Or Accor?

            • @Hellcat: Accor is only for primary, PP for Primary + 1 Supplementary

      • @abs898
        What’s this about?

There Virgin Membership too, I didn't get to use it much as I already have a status. But I was able to lend a card to my in-laws and they thoroughly used it. Technically that's 4x memberships if required.

I haven’t seen anything Virgin related in their offers before…..

        • You can use VA Domestic lounge as much. VA sells this as a membership too for about#400-500 , can't remember the exact amount

          • @abs898: Your in-laws can access virgin lounge using the platinum card in your name? Wouldnt they check the name on the card against their boarding pass?

            • @IMBI3: I gave them a supplementary card! duh!
4 memberships via 4 sup cards

              • @abs898: Correct me if I’m wrong but you need to be flying Virgin to access yeah?

I don’t think they will like if you have a Qantas ticket

      • I would like to add

There's also up to 10% off business flights if booked with amex travel.

Plus, for older members like me I get the $400 travel credit with Reserve.

And for some professions, like the AMA AmEx platinum or the charted accountant version of it, the annual fee is only $1250.

Also I got the Platinum Edge with annual fee of $149 via AMA, but the travel credit is $200, annually.

      • In regards to the supplementary cards, do you know if they are able to also gain access to the Centurion Lounges + bring in 2 Guests like the Primary Cardholders can?

        • +1

Yes 2 guests OR immediate family (spouse and children under 17)

  • I am interested in this card, but I didn't find the card name in REFERRAL LINKS. Which link is for AmEx Platinum Charge?

    • the one that says AMEX Platinum

    • It's just called simply "Platinum Card".

  • +2

I have this card. The benefits are pretty good and justifies the annual fee. Even without the card, we would probbly dine at the eligible restaurants once a year, and travel once a year, plus the Accor Plus membership, Priority Pass, and other hotel benefits, we actually get a higher value than the annual fee. I'm not a mortgage expert but I believe since it is a charge card, it does show up on your credit report but it doesn't affect your borrowing power? We took out a new loan in late 2022, and I closed a lot of credit cards to get the loan approved. Tried to get a new card with airport lounge access after that as we were going overseas in mid 2023, but kept on getting declined. Went with this card and got approved within days and have been happy with it so far.

    • That's an excellent point. Would be good to see if mortgage experts can weigh on the supposed benefit of holding a charge card.

      • +3

My broker didn't bother as it's not a credit card and has to be paid at the end of the cycle. They take credit card as an unsecured loan.

        • That's awesome :)

    • thanks for the info..

Have you maintained the card post bonus year? If so wondering if the fees are still worth it without the bonus points.

      • +1

I haven't reached my one year anniverary yet, but I plan to keep it as the benefits renew yearly. The annual fee can be completely offset by the annual benefits provided by the card, the bonus points was just a nice signup addition.

      • I have had the card for over three years, was a bit useless during covid but now it's worth every cent

      • Bonus points aside, if you can afford at least 1 holiday per year, then it is worth keeping the card as it's very easy to make back the annual fee through claiming the travel credits, Accor complimentary hotel stay and lounge passes and dining credits.

If that holiday happens to be overseas, to a location that's covered by the Amex international dining credits as well as an Accor Plus hotel, then even better. The more you travel the more benefits you get back from lounge passes and travel insurance.

Also it's a good conversion rate for QFF points at 1.125pts/$ spent in Australia uncapped. There are some cards that will earn 1.5 or 1.25 QFF pts/$ but they all have a cap before the earn rate reduces to 1pt/$. It's a decent daily driver card and holds it's utility value after the first year.

  • +1

What's the minimum salary be for this card ? or does it not matter since it's a charge card ?

    • Commonly saying is $100,000

      • +2

Strange. I’m on sub 65k and got approved automatically last year.

    • My friend on $70k was auto approved without being asked for any documentation

  • +1

I've been using this card for nearly a year and the benefits it provides to me are much more than the annual fee for sure. I also found that the bonus points do not conflict with the Amex Qantas card offers.

    • What does this mean? Did you get 2 amex cards and bonus points for both?

  • Assuming this is the unlimited tier, I've been using the priority pass and can vouch that it's worth around $500 each (worth the annual fee if it is indeed available for each additional cardholder too!) - with I've already done 20 redemptions over 5 flights as this is also available at selected food/drink retailers (not just lounges).

    • It's the unlimited tier, works as a premium version when a lounge entry has multiple tiers.

    • +2

Priority pass through Amex does not give you credits at food and drink retailers.

Source: my partner has this card.

I have the Citi Prestige and it does give the food and drink benefit.

    • The Priority Pass is for the primary card holder and one other additional card holder. You have to call up to get the memberships, it's not an automated/self filled form process. Also this particular membership is only for lounge access, you can't use it to redeem food and drinks at selected airport outlets.

    • How did you get free drinks outside the lounge network?

      • You get cards that does, like Citi Prestige

  • if I have a AMEX explorer card, am I still eligible to get the bonus point?

  • Automatic rejection (called up and theyve confirmed)…. second time i applied, no difference. Well above / double the min income. Must be the frequent churns from other banks.

On the bright side, i saved $1450

Ill probably not bother in the future with amex anymore
