  • Dunno why no one posted it sooner, lol.

  • So if I save these cards, I can use this to buy the new iphone later this year?

    • +3

Yep. You can even add them to your Apple Account now to avoid the funds being stolen, as per the OP description.

      • +5

Yep I was a victim. I opened soon after buying the Apple GC (from Coles) in a recent deal. On the outside it looked normal, seal intact and all. Was $100, opened up, it felt a bit tight to pull out, when I did it was a $200 GC with the last 2 digits scratched. Told CS at the store, they can't do anything, gave me Coles HQ number to call. I did and sent them photos front and back everything, 2 weeks later still heard nothing from them… The other $50 GC bought at the same place was ok. So a 10% saving became a 66% loss.
My tip: be careful and if you intend on a big Apple purchase, do not buy single big value GC, buy multiple smaller ones to reduce the chance one of them is a dud.

        • could you chargeback for selling a defective product

        • +3

I wish you could just buy online from Woolies to avoid fraud

        • I had exactly the same when I bought 10x $200 GCs from Woolies, but they refunded + replaced the 2x defective cards on the spot.

          • @packeteer: You opened and loaded cards in-store - after making payment, in front of them?

        • +1

My local Woolies keeps apple cards locked up behind the service desk.

    • +2

You can, but Coles/Woolies/Big w seem to run these promos every few weeks so probably no urgency. Also if you have these in your account and you have any app subscriptions, it’ll deduct from that balance (I think?)

      • -1

Speak for yourself, I need a lot of cards for the New Mac Pro and the new Vision Pro :(

      • +1

That's my sentiment nowadays especially when interest rates on TDs/savings accounts are 5%… so basically is it worth stocking up on Apple gift cards now vs waiting until closer to when you need it?

      • Yes, you can choose to deduct any app subscription fee including Apple Music, Youtube Premium, iCloud, etc from your account balance. So, basically it’s 10% off subscription fees as well.

    • I'd pull the card out and check the serials before purchase, then redeem it onto your account immediately.

If there are cards that are in a 'checkout' area, I'd go for those over the cards off on the big 'gift card display' as it's easier to swiothc those with tampered cards.

  • -1

can you trade Woolworth points for velocity points?

    • +3

Nope. Only Qantas. Besides, if you wanted Velocity points on Apple Gift Cards, you'll be able to get them from Coles when they run their equivalent offer of 20x Flybuys points instead. The offer usually happens every month.

  • +1

I thought with variable, we can load up to $500 ?

    • That's right.

      • Cheers

    • +1

Are variable amount cards less likely to be tampered with because you need to validate (and specify the amount to load) with the cashier?

      • +6

It depends on whether you are referring to the original design (version 1) or the redesigned design (version 2):

        • Version 1: The simple answer is no, because the activation barcode on the packaging was not physically attached to the same piece of paper as the one with the gift card redemption code. That meant that when you (or the staff member) scanned that barcode, you could load any amount between $20 and $500 inclusive, regardless of whether the gift card inside of the packaging was the correct gift card, a random variable load gift card, a $20 fixed-value gift card, etc.

        • Version 2: The simple answer is probably, because the activation barcode is attached to the same piece of paper as the redemption code, plus the barcode is hidden behind a tab that needs to be ripped off before it can be scanned. However, that does not necessarily guarantee the gift card has not been tampered with, as outlined in the FAQ linked towards the bottom of OP's description.

Put it this way, I would be more confident buying a physical Apple gift card with the redesigned packaging.

        • Yep the new design is much better, ran through $2,000 worth over last 2 days from two different Woolies, all worked fine. Staff seem to be onto the scams as well in my area so they know to check them.

      • +6

I bought some variable cards this morning and the new design is MUCH better. In order to open the card you more or less need to destroy the card itself. The staff at checkout couldn't process the card without tearing the back of the card off either.

        • +1

UPDATE: I just purchased 5x more Gift Cards this morning from Roselands NSW with the new design, and the first two cards I'd received had been tampered with inside, the last 2 digits/letters (I think?) were scratched off already somehow (and under the 'grey' security seal/sticker).

The third card was opened by Woolworths staff in front of me and that was also tampered and could not be redeemed. Looking at my (opened) cards I have a feeling the scammers are opening the 'tamper proof' cardboard through what I can only assume is steam or something and then glueing them back on. When the staff originally scanned them for purchase the 'pull tab' was intact and looked like it hadn't been opened.

None of the 3 I opened scanned or activated.

I can only assume that all 5 of my purchased cards were tampered with and swapped out.

I'm already on the phone to Woolworths Customer Support (they've been super helpful so far!) and was given a ticket number and told I would need to wait 1-5 business days to hear back from the 'Gift Card' team (I assume is a 3rd party).

          Really frustrating and upsetting!

Advice - avoid these gift cards at Roselands for the time being! (Staff had pulled them off the shelves as soon as I reported it)

        • +1

          UPDATE 2:

TL;DR - If this happens to you, try calling Apple immediately/directly they'll likely be able to get the correct code.

So I rang up Woolworths Customers Support, sent through photos and they lodged a ticket and promised they'd get back to me in 1-5 business days. After reading the comments here, I also rang Apple directly and sent them photos of the cards (back/front). They told me to open the unopened ones, which proved to be also tampered with. Thankfully the scammers hadn't activated my cards yet (Apple rep could look up with the info they had) and they were able to provide me with the correct code over the phone, which I immediately redeemed.

          • +1

            @ryanhunt: Sorry you experienced this.

            Apple customer care is exceptional.

          • @ryanhunt: Yep. The scale of this suggests it could only be occurring via perpetrators in the Woolworths supply chain, and it is unfathomable that they would allow it to keep occurring without at least transferring all cards to behind their service desks.

As you have noted, if you fall victim - like so many others - don waste time contacting Woolworths - get onto Apple Support ASAP. Since it appears likely that the perpetrators cannot redeem the values until the cards are activated, open your cards immediately and get onto Apple if need be. If four or less digits have been obscured and the values have not yet been redeemed, Apple should be able to talk you through transferring the values to your Apple Account Balance.

          • @ryanhunt: Had the same issue on Friday, called Apple straight away but the guy I spoke to was hopeless. He requested access to my screen then asked me to turn on the camera and show him the cards, receipts and try redeem them so he could see the issue himself, I said many times how common it is for this gift cards to be tampered (which he was completely unaware and said he never heard of it before) and asked if he could give me the correct redeem codes, but he refused and only offered to escalate the case to the review team and said it would take up to 10 business days to get an answer. Also spoke with Woolies, they asked for 5 business days. Called them again today to find out that the gift cards have been redeemed already and only thing Apple did NOW was to suspend the accounts used, but they can't even tell if the money was used or not. The guy from Friday could have frozen the cards when I called but again he was hopeless. I was basically told today to wait the 10 business days.

            • @mauza: Disappointing. Did you ask to have the matter escalated?

              • +1

@YesPleaseThankYou: That was exactly what I was offered on Friday, but that takes 10 business days, the scammers took the money the next day. Apple has to act quicker on this, things are getting out of control.

            • @mauza: Yep. My support agent said the same thing about this being very uncommon, albeit he was otherwise quite helpful and had the matter sorted in under 45 mins. I can only presume that yours had already been redeemed otherwise it makes no sense for him not to action it immediately.

Clearly they are coached to respond this way, since the woman who served me at Woolworths said they'd had frequent issues with Apple giftcard tampering. Begs the question why they'd leave them on the shelves rather than behind the service desk, although the scale of this suggests it's likely to be a corrupt supply chain or systemic employee issue rather than anything individual customers are doing en masse…

              • @UncleRico: No, I called them while at the store, like minutes from buying them and first thing the guy did was to confirm the money was there but started blaming Woolworths for messing up the activation. I even suggested others had gone through the same issue and managed to get the redeem code over the phone, but he said he couldn't do anything else to help other than escalating the case. Spent around the same time on the phone as you, but without getting anything resolved. He sounded like an old man, insisting in teaching me how to redeem the gift cards and at the end sent me 2 emails and insisted I upload the photos and details of the cards separately to each, but turned out the emails were the same, with the same case ID and there was an option on the link on them to upload more than one gift card details.

            • @mauza: So sorry to hear, I felt sick to my stomach throughout the process thinking I'd lost my money - I can only imagine you're feeling something similar.

The other thing I thought about was whether I could do a 'charge back' on my credit card to get a refund. I didn't have to go down that route, but I would love to know if anyone here has had to resort to this when this happens.

              • @ryanhunt: I never doubted I would get the money back one way or the other, but what pisses me off the most is knowing that Apple had the chance to stop them and did nothing, and in the end, they’ve got what they wanted and will likely do it again, because it works.

There is no update from Apple yet, but Woolies got back to me today (2 business days) and said they spoke to the store manager and I can go there tomorrow for a full refund.

  • +7

This will coming handy paying Microsoft Technical Support, but i wish my computer would stop getting viruses.

  • +1

I didn't realise there are new Apple Gift Cards with the more tamper resistant design. Will keep an eye out for them, but suspect all the big denominations will go quickly come Wednesday 8am.

    • But there's no more stickers on the Apple gift card.

      • Yeah I was quite disappointed by this… I know it's trivial but my kids seemed to love them and they were surprisingly decent quality stickers (and as far as I know, don't seem to damage things they are stuck onto).

  • Can we use Woolworths or wish gift cards in store to purchase these apple gift cards?

    • +1

      No.

That is against the terms and conditions for Woolworths Supermarket gift cards and Everyday WISH gift cards.

Additionally, if you attempt to use one of these gift cards to pay for any gift cards at Woolworths, you should get an Items Not Allowed error on the EFTPOS terminal (and if you are at a self-checkout, a staff member will need to dismiss this error message before you can attempt payment again).

    • +2

Nope, no gift card inception unfortunately.

    • +1

no, but you should be able to use coles mastercards (i've done it in the recent past, but YMMV)

  • Reminding me about the 15% off GC I bought just before iPhone 15 release.

    • Yeah, the ultimate giftcard deal was amazing, I am waiting for something like that before 17 comes :)

      • What was that deal? You can buy Ultimate GCs for 15% off and swap for apple gc's?

  • +1

Bring back the 10% off! none of this points stuff!!

  • Yawn another one…feels like period, once a month either coles or woolies

  • Fingers cross it will be visa or Mastercard debit cards in a few weeks….my tax is due soon

  • can i use the everyday rewards point booster + the 10x bonus? how would the points be calculated as such?

    • Offer do not stacks

  • Anyone know if gift card purchases are eligible towards credit card Qantas points promos?

Thinking of using cc to buy apple gift cards to go towards the $xxxx spend in first 90 days for xxxx Qantas points.

    • +1

Yep, the CC company only sees you spending $xxx at Woolies.

  • Anyone know where this is advertised - couldnt see in the catalogue

  • My local store said the activation servers are down across the network

    • Long shot but does anyone lknow when would they be back online?

      • +1

        Good news and bad news

I just went back and it was working.

… but for some reason the bonus points didn't come through at all and it says 0 points. Very odd. Waiting for CS agents to come back to me.

ps. new tamper proof GC packaging is a PITA to open and no stickers :(

        • Thank you for the response.

          • +1

@bonechiller: Looks like the T&C in OP's post states:

Bonus points can take up to 14 business days to be loaded onto your Everyday Rewards Card from date of purchase.

            • @bonechiller: Yeah they're usually instantaneous like within 5 seconds I'd get the notification.

              • @jace88: I should add that as jace88 stated, my points appeared in the app shortly after purchase.

                • @bonechiller: Only one of my transactions came through immediately. I bought 5, 3 and 3 cards. Got the points on the 5, but not the other two transactions. (and yes I'm aware I went over; in hindsight should've gotten a variable load card now that I know there's no stickers for the kids anymore).

  • +3

Word of warning, bought 10x cards this morning from Woolies Chirnside Park and 3x did not have the full code printed properly. lodged case with Apple support but it's quite the hassle. Never had this issue with previous type of GC.

Keep activation receipts as they are required by Apple support and the original POS receipt / tax invoice.

    • +1

Which version of the gift cards did you purchase that had the redemption code partially missing? Version 1 or Version 2?

      • +1

        Version 2

    • +2

It's not bad printing, the cards have been tampered.

I bought a $200 this morning, Version 2 and it was also tampered (4 digits scratched off). Called Apple support soon after and the funds hadn't been taken yet so was able to get it resolved.

      • what ? How could they have tampered when the card wasn't even activated ???

I have my support case with them but no one said to me that it could be tampering. Also I scratched the card using a coin and it looks to me like a printing issue as the plastic on top hasn't been removed.

        • +1

Gift Card FAQ - Tamper section

I think you are talking about the plastic on top of the redemption code that has the grey stuff? They pull those off and put their own on top I think (or maybe reuse the same one) after scratching some digits/letters off the code. I pulled off the one on mine that was tampered with and can feel the area where part of the redemption code was scratched off. It's not smooth like the rest of the card, it's scratched through the top layer into the paper.

          • @Dejy: I've been looking at it since you made the comment. I really can't see that plastic was taken off but if it was, they have done an excellent job.

Talking to Apple support, I was able to redeem one of them as it was missing 4 characters, thats the max support person can see. Still on the call on how soon they can resolve the others which are missing 5-6 characters. For now those gift cards have been disabled, till the case gets picked up by whoever that can see the whole thing.

            What a mess …

          • @Dejy: It's possible that the scammer stole gift cards from the store, copied the barcode, and then replaced them with counterfeit versions containing invalid codes under the scratch-off seal, making it nearly impossible for customers to detect the fraud.

The only solution is for supermarkets to keep Apple gift cards behind the counter, preventing scammers from accessing and replacing them unnoticed.

Interestingly, Ultimate Gift Cards appear to be less appealing to scammers since only one can be used per transaction on JB Hi-Fi’s online store, or they must be redeemed in-store at Officeworks.

  • Often, these offers are in different states at different times. NSW always seems to be first. Do Melb stores have these available today?

  • +1

Highpoint woolies has v2 gift cards - successfully added 3.5k @the desk using the variable cards. The employees gave me weird looks when I asked them if I could redeem in front of them.

  • +1

Got scammed - charlestown woolies. 3/5 $200 worked. Spent 2 hrs in the apple store rectifying it. Its being sorted, pending 10 business days.

    Never again.

    • Sorry to hear, I also got a tampered card but fortunately it wasn't redeemed yet after I saw it and contacted Apple and they were able to resolve it quickly.
If it had been redeemed then yea, 10 business days typical turnaround for resolution they said.

      • +1

That's nuts. I called them within an hour of purchasing. The entire scam is on an impressive scale!

    • Did your Woolies keep them behind the counter or out in the store?

      • Out in the open sadly. Not sure many keep it behind actually..

  • I bought 5x $500 variable gen 2 cards today in Brisbane, redeemed all instantly, immediately showed up in my rewards account and already in my qantas account.

    • thats the way to do it : immediately

  • So many people with tampered cards. I thought version 2 was supposed to stop that.

    • +4

Don't know why all the stores don't keep behind counter. I bought some this morning and they all came from behind counter

      • I'm surprised too. It seems like such a logical solution.

  • Will they refund one the spot if I remind in store for activation and it turned out to be tempered with?

    • will take a few days unless store manager is there, happened to me at Preston South store…

  • +6

Reading about multiple examples of the Version 2 card being tampered with is putting me off getting these.

Was excited to order the new MBA M4 but not so keen now.

  • There is no stock in either Woolworth Central Park Metro or Haymarket Metro.

    • +2

      update:

Yesterday, I spoke with a staff member at Woolies Central Park, and they said they don’t stock it. But today, I asked again at the counter, possibly with the manager—I guess. They said there is stock, but it's kept behind the counter. So, I bought 8 cards, and he also helped me check that the cards were not tampered with. All the cards are working! Nice!

  • I have always converted everyday rewards to Qantas points however I am thinking I now prefer the $ off my Woolies shop

Eg $2000 of gift cards (40,000 points) = $200 worth of “automatic savings off my shop”,

Can I redeem the whole $200 worth of voucher in one woolies shop or is it 1x$10 per transaction?

    • Yes, I did use 80$ (from last deal with apple cards) in one Woolies shop. Just curious how much you would get for qff? I'm about to by a flight to Europe

  • Apologies in advance if this is covered in the FAQ or elsewhere.

I need to get an M4 MacBook Air for my daughter. I’ve got enough reward points in my my ANZ rewards account, but for the past week they have a notice on their site saying they have temporarily disabled redemption of Apple Cards.

Since they do have Wish and Woolies cards. Could I just redeem for a Woolies gift card and use that to purchase Apple Card’s in store?

  • Anyone know if I can use Apple account balance at Apple Education Store (online) please? I need to use 10 for a purchase but the limit says 8. Would appreciate if anyone can please confirm, I have never purchased edu before. Many thanks

    • +2

Yes. For both Apple Online Store and the Apple Online Store (Education). And you can pay with a combination of Apple gift cards and Apple Account Balance.

You can redeem 2 of them to your Apple Account Balance, then pay with 8 Apple gift cards together with Apple Account Balance ($4999 limit for Apple Account Balance).

      https://www.apple.com/au/shop/help/payments

      • +1

Thanks for that. I managed to find some variable gcs so didn't hit the limit after all!

  • Is it possible to buy online and get the cashback? There is 18% with cashrewards!

    • +1

Cashback is ineligible on the following:
      - Purchases of gift cards

      • Thanks I just saw that
