I wasn't invited directly, but I could click this link and upgrade.

You can speak to AMEX support to confirm if you're eligible.

YMMV

The upgrade offers have been poor for years - better than nothing i guess

    • Could be better, but IF you are a current cardholder and not eligible for new signup offers AND you will use the travel credit… it's worth considering.

      • I keep upgrading and downgrading between Ultimate and Discovery - use the credit, downgrade, get pro rata fee refund, wait for offer, upgrade. Rinse and repeat - they’ve not stopped me yet! (same with Explorer to Edge and back)

        • How do you downgrade? I upgraded to this card a while back and have since had physical health issues that will stop me travelling (don't know what else I can use credit on) so it's a waste for me.

    upgrade from standard card?

    • Yeah, I just upgraded from Discovery.

My partner closed her Platinium card after being refused a retention offer haha

  • Should be noted that Amex typically only allows upgrades for the same card type.

    • Yep - look in the old link referenced by OP and you can see the links for Edge/Essential/Explorer and Velocity families of cards

  • Not sure if it'll get better but I'd hold out… 20,000 points isn't worth it given you could be "upgrading" from a fee-free card. I previously upgraded about a year or so ago from the basic fee-free QANTAS AMEX and got 60 or 70k… can't remember now.

I’ve been waiting it regularly for many years (and doing the upgrades regularly too). Been a long long time since a good offer so i think this is as good as it gets now :(

Wow thought I'd give it a go and one click and got accepted! Thanks OP, was eyeing off upgrading from the Qantas Premium anyway
