The upgrade offers have been poor for years - better than nothing i guess

    • Could be better, but IF you are a current cardholder and not eligible for new signup offers AND you will use the travel credit… it's worth considering.

I keep upgrading and downgrading between Ultimate and Discovery - use the credit, downgrade, get pro rata fee refund, wait for offer, upgrade. Rinse and repeat - they’ve not stopped me yet! (same with Explorer to Edge and back)

        • How do you downgrade? I upgraded to this card a while back and have since had physical health issues that will stop me travelling (don't know what else I can use credit on) so it's a waste for me.

        • You used qanats travel credit to book tickets ? I just recently applied for the card and thinking of how to use travel credit as Qantas flight so expensive compared to others

        • Just on this, have any of the upgrades you've made been recent? I have a targeted offer as part of this one (and for 50k), but I noticed in the fine print it says:

"You will not receive this bonus if you have received this upgrade bonus previously"

And any trick to the pro rata fee refund? Do you hold off using the flight credit as part of such, or?

          • @OneTonneRodeo: I usually use credit then downgrade. Never asked for a refund, always got it.

I’ve also received upgrade offer points more than once.

@digitalane: You use the travel credit and they still refund the annual feel proportionally? That's wild

            • @digitalane: I messaged Amex chat and they said pro-rata refund is not available. Maybe this is no longer possible?

              • @SaveTheManuals: Well if people keep asking things get stopped! :(

I got it as recently as last month

    upgrade from standard card?

    • Yeah, I just upgraded from Discovery.

My partner closed her Platinium card after being refused a retention offer haha

  • Should be noted that Amex typically only allows upgrades for the same card type.

    • Yep - look in the old link referenced by OP and you can see the links for Edge/Essential/Explorer and Velocity families of cards

  • Not sure if it'll get better but I'd hold out… 20,000 points isn't worth it given you could be "upgrading" from a fee-free card. I previously upgraded about a year or so ago from the basic fee-free QANTAS AMEX and got 60 or 70k… can't remember now.

I’ve been waiting it regularly for many years (and doing the upgrades regularly too). Been a long long time since a good offer so i think this is as good as it gets now :(

Wow thought I'd give it a go and one click and got accepted! Thanks OP, was eyeing off upgrading from the Qantas Premium anyway

  • Anyone got a velocity platinum upgrade link?

  • Anyone know if you can do this from the platinum edge card or only a Qantas earning card? Was considering cancelling my platinum edge card but changing to this one could be good, especially if I can use the hack to get the travel credit back as cash

  • The fine print on my offer says:

"You will not receive this bonus if you have received this upgrade bonus previously"

I did an upgrade a couple years ago, from memory. Why is it being targeted to me again? And for 50k points? If the last time around it was a different points value, is that technically a different upgrade bonus to "this" one?

But then I note, through the link above, the wording is slightly different, says "may not receive" instead of "will not receive".

  • I just received an upgrade offer for 50,000 points if I upgrade from Amex Discovery to Ultimate. Spend requirement is $3000 in 3 months.

Anyone know if Amex do pro-rata refund?

    • I got same offer. But quite hard to find somewhere accepted Amex.

      • Wow. Where do you live? I reckon 90%+ of my spend goes on Amex

        • Sydney metro.

May be I don't spend much at major department stores where they accept all cards. 90% of other retails only accept Visa/Mastercard. Some charged higher fee if pay by Amex so I didn't bother.

          • @timhn: I never shop in department stores either - admittedly do a lot of online shopping, and don’t choose Aldi. But very rare that it’s not taken where I shop (in Brisbane). Also never had a problem in the 5 years I lived in Sydney myself

    • Can confirm I got a 50k offer as well. Shows up under the list of Amex Offers once logged in.

  • I have business explorer so is for personal cards only
