This is great. Offers like this (and not 5 bucks off at maccas) make me want to actually keep my Platinum rather than waiting out the 18 months.

    • +2

the $5 off at Maccas the dining credit for our inflationary needs.

  • Hmm the australian dining one isnt showing up

    • My Australian one was right at the bottom

    • Wasn’t for me. Told them via chat and they manually enrolled me

  • I would much prefer the $400 Deliveroo credit they did the last 2 years.

    • I don't recall this deal - was it targeted?

      • +1

Possibly, but I got it on multiple cards, and I never get targeted offers - so assumed it was across the board.

      • from memory these were the $400 offers could be used with Coles, Woolworth and Deliveroo, etc. Plat Charge card only offers.

        • Thanks so much - I recall the grocery credit but thought I had missed a different deal

  • Is this a perm benefit of the Platinum Charge or a one off offer? I can’t seem to find anything for this on their homepage.

    • currently for the next 2.5yrs (end of 2024).
      $200+$200 so 400 x3 lots

      • Thanks, it's a great little benefit I hope they make perm.

I struggled this time around making the Platinum charge make sense as I'm not travelling as much. If they geared more of the benefits to on-the-ground lifestyle benefits like this I'd make the switch back.

  • +6

I know the Centurion annual fee recently went from 5k to 6.5k, so I assume this is to soften the blow when they raise the fee on the Platinum.

Great for the time being though!

  • Great deal. I was only just overseas in NZ last month so don't think I'll get another chance to use this years overseas credit.

    • +13

Your comments are misinformed nonsense. You demonstrably haven’t looked into the card properly or at all if you think this is the only benefit for card holders. I’ve obtained more than $1450 of value every year I’ve held the card.

      • +4

Its amazing some people think a $1450 a/f with over $2k worth of benefits (at a minimum for me at least) are the "rich elite"
4 supps with unlimited lounge passes and travel insurance is just the cherry on top… not even going to spell out the rest of the benefits..

        Thanks for posting!

        • +9

Its definitely a luxury though. Unless you can afford to spend a certain amount, those benefits amount to very little.

    • +1

A lot of that $1,450 are substitution costs for most people. IE the benefits in the card offset spend they would've had in the year. For example, the $400 travel credit, $350 free Accor Hotels night stay, $250 for the Australian Subscription is roughly $1,000 there of the $1,450.

    • Jealously isn't really your color buddy. This is a pretty misinformed and ignorant comment to top it off.

Did you forget about the $450 of travel credit that comes with it as well? I've easily taken advantage of more than $2k of deals (and whatever the additional benefits you get in hotels and lounges).

    • No.

850 travel credit for use on Qantas/Virgin/Singapore airlines as the common ones
      400 dining credit each year

That already basically makes back the credit card fee. Then you add on the free amazing travel insurance which I have used three times this year at $1400 a pop (Spent on $1000 a night hotel + food when my + partners flight was cancelled)

Then you add on all the other benefits which I won't go into here. Then you add on the 350,000 points I've made this year alone, which takes me to Europe and back in business class.

What were you saying again. Something something financial illiteracy lol

  • Do we can use it this year 2022, in 2023 and 2024? Or is it just 2023 and 2024?

    • The first credit applies for the rest of calendar 2022. Time to book an overseas trip.

    • +1

This year too. Valid from 5 July to 31 Dec 2022…

      Per the terms:

Benefit resets annually on 1 January until 31 December 2024. The redemption periods are:
      05 July – 31 December 2022
      1 January – 31 December 2023
      1 January – 31 December 2024

I wonder if there are any international restaurants on the list that offer an international gift card to be used in AUS…………………hmm food for thought

    • There's heaps I can see overseas - check the link in the post.

    • +1

if you are to believe the T&CS, then no…

Benefit only available for dine in services. Benefit excludes purchases of gift cards and vouchers,
transactions made towards deposits charged upfront by the venue, cancellation and no-show
charges, take away or dine-at-home services

      • Good pickup!

  • +2

Perfect timing.. I'm in the States and Canada! Thanks for posting….

  • International list is quite small actually, unless you go to the US or Canada.

  • +1

This is fantastic thanks. A bit annoyed cause we just spent $400 at 6head last week. Oh well. The HIDA wagyu skewer with caviar on top is amazing. Would use up half the dining credit on that starter alone LOL.

$450 travel credit + $400 platinum reserve credit + $400 dining credit + $400 accor plus hotel room. Not bad! Value is slowly coming back. Since the supp card gets this too. What a deal.

$1200 annual fee since we are on the professional program.

    • Did your supp cards get the deal?

      • +2

Nope, just checked! I stand corrected. aww man, I spoke too soon. Oh well, I'll begrudgingly take $400 on just the primary.

    • They don’t do travel credit on Platinum Reserve anymore.

      • +3

They do if you still hold it. ( I still get it every year)

    • How can i get the $1200 for the professional program?

      • +1

You would have had to sign up on either an AMA or Chartered accountants etc plan. There is a way to do a product change but you have to talk to amex about that it's a PITA.

  • +4

That's a lot of dis comment for AMEX Play charge annual fee. You guys need to remember you are getting 450 travel credit, 150 credit to shop, and now 400 dining credit. I signed up for $500 bonus credit and 300,000 points. Not only that, the free travel insurance is pretty top tier similar to what you buy.

I traveled a lot and the included travel insurance helped. I recently fractured my right leg (during holiday) and claimed AMEX travel insurane for loss of income. They paid me back 8k for 3 months of no employment income.

If you travel a lot your cots will most likely reduce due to free lounges usages.

    • +1

850 travel credit if you sign up for the free platinum reserve credit card (400 there)

      • +2

Unfortunately the platinum reserve no longer exists. Only for those of us who already have it. If you cancel it now you can never get it again!

        • Oh interesting to know

          • +1

@Tech5: And by no longer exists I mean it's around but no travel credits.

        • +2

Technically Platinum Reserve still exists and remains complimentary with the Platinum Charge but the $400 travel credit on it has been grandfathered. It's important to note because you can still get AmEx offers on the Platinum Reserve in addition to the Charge. The card is otherwise useless unless you're on the grandfathered option.

          • @kipps: Does the reserve have an additional copy of the offers available to the charge card? I have not used it since I got it in 2017 so I better get a card sent out lol

            • +1

@Tech5: Some offers, yes. Others no. I've also seen instances where the Reserve has offers but my Charge doesn't - particularly if I've recently spent at this particular merchant on my Plat Charge….

    • +2

I've gotten really fantastic value out of this card and I think it's a great card for the sort of people who are on OzBargain. However, it's not a card that I'd recommend to most people. You have to be prepared to do a bit of research and to get up your knowledge about where the value lies with it to really get good value out of it. People on OzBargain love that sort of thing, most people though would probably end up missing a lot of the value from it.

      • I think of it as pre-paying for a bundle of specified benefits. It will suit some, but not others. I just travelled overseas, used the lounge access (instead of buying a meal somewhere else in the airport) and booked accommodation with the travel credits. That’s about 1/3 of the annual fees worth of savings already.

      • This is a really good point, applies to all other AMEX card benefits as well. These benefits are not free money, as you need to go out your way to find places to spend, the opportunity costs (including time) involved should not be ignored, not to mention that you may not spend some of these money if the benefits set it there to start with, thinking of being ‘forced’ to spend……

        • +2

Was easy pre covid if you travelled even a little bit to recuperate the fees

Last 2yrs Amex did come to the party with supermarket credits, cash back, Uber credits etc

  • +1

I have a platnium business card i dont see this offer come up

    • looks like we're not getting this….

  • Now wait for the $400 credit offer at supermarkets to see the Amex card even more appealing.

    • +3

I would be happy with no international transaction fee like the US based card.

      • +1

agreed! The uptake on international usage would be huge!

        • +1

I'm still a schmuck and use it for as many things as I can while abroad. I've been saved a couple times thanks to the easy chargeback abilities, especially for deposits etc. Given that a lot of my spend is just reimbursed it makes no difference to me.

      • I complained to them about the FX fee and suddenly had a competition invite appear to win $10,000 travel credits by spending overseas. If enough people complain maybe AmEx will drop this ridiculously high surcharge. As it is, I dump overseas spend through other cards. I'm expecting they'll jack our annual fee shortly - like they've recently done to Centurion.

        • I also got thr invitation, how did you complain? Was there a form? I’ll submit the complaint too.

          • @T-man: I used online chat with an AmEx rep. Noted that US Amex Plat doesn't charge FX, and that there's a whole heap of credit providers in Australia that also don't charge FX (i.e, 28 degrees, Macquarie, Bankwest) and that this offering doesn't stack up for international travel at 3% for FX.

        • I agree about the annual fee thing. Amex always sweetens the deal and then whacks you on the snout with an increased fee. They did this last time around but with points.

  • If I sign up, reckon these offers will pop up? Or have I missed the boat?

    • +1

Even if you don't get the offers the card is a bargain if you can get the ridiculous sign on points credited with a half price annual fee, plus all the other inclusions. This card does require work and research to get all the deals. If you travel a lot and do the effort you'll likely see good value out of it. I'd call them to find out - they're really helpful at Amex usually.

      • Thanks! I just gotta wait for a good sign on deal.

  • I closed my amex card in 2018 to trigger the 18months wait and never got back in with covid.
What would be the best amex deal(s) to be back on atm? I think I initially wanted to wait for the explorer but can't remember.

Edit: would be awesome to refresh this page

    • that page must be one of the hidden gems

  • Has it been disclosed how this works? Is it literally free money or is it just a % of your spend? Seems unclear based on the terms, which suggest it’s the former?

    • 100% back upto $200

  • I didn't get the Australian offer so I messaged live chat - I was originally fobbed of and was told that it was a targeted offer.

I mentioned that the TnC's made it sound like a recurring benefit, and they agreed and manually enrolled me.

    Thanks

  • +1

Does anyone know how this affect your credit score/serviceability since it’s a charge card with no set limit? Like for a $6000 limit credit card, the bank usually take 3% of that to be monthly minimum payments.

    • +1

This card has to be paid in full every month so very different to usual credit card liabilities which drain your serviceability. Each lender assesses its impact differently. It’s never impacted me and I’ve never had any home loan broker question it - I think it has minimal impact provided they’ve got a grasp of your living expenses.

    • +1

My last mortgage application.. she said she didn't have to put a figure as it's a charge card so it's great

      • which lender?

        • +2

Was direct with ANZ. No broker etc

  • Great additional benefit!

I assume it's primary cardholders only?

    • Just checked, yes primary card holder only

  • The 3% forex fee makes this deal shittier. The US amex cards don't have any forex fees, why must the AU ones??

    • +2

      Lack of competition I presume

    • +2

If they remove the fx fee, my spend on Amex card will be doubled, I spend a lot overseas on online shopping sites and travelling.

      • totally, got myself a BankWest Plat card for my upcoming overseas trip, otherwise I would use my Amex there.

        • Same here, I am using BankWest World MasterCard for most of my overseas spend. The only Amex card without fx fee in Australia I’ve ever known was ANZ Amex Travel Card and I got this card back in 2010 or 2011. 1.5 pts / $1 spend and no fx fee, uncapped points. It was my dream card until the bank royal commission has changed the entire financial system here, less and less point / $1 spend and more expensive annual fee and no retention offers…good old days have gone!

  • Does anyone know if this is an actual $200 back at a restaurant if you spend $200? It says up to $200 and I wondered if you spent $500 do they just give you back a proportion of what you spend up to $200 and only five you $50, for example.

  • +4

Quick tip for those who can’t reserve a table at your favourite restaurant because it is fully booked. Call the Platinum Concierge and they should be able to book for you, they are very helpful and friendly.

    • Supposedly that perk is now gone and this dining credit is the replacement

When was the last time you used the booking service?
      Mine was a year ago

      • +1

I have been using the Concierge all the time, and they have been very helpful, not only booking the table but also booking tickets, organise the the trips, cancelling the tickets (yes they helped me to call Qantas, didn’t have to wait for an hour on phone).

        • Amex used to have a website, listing which restaurants they had a dedicated Amex table.. that's gone now

But really glad it's still around

  • Does anyone have any recommendations for a hip restaurant in London (not overly extravagant/fancy)?

The list of participating venues there is too big…
