            • @MnM007: Just checked, I got the Aeroplan email 16 days after the Star Alliance email.

If I need to count 8 weeks from the Aeroplan email I have another 14 days to go.

              • @Sharp: @Sharp - any luck with the points landing mate?

              • @Sharp: @Sharp - did you get your points yet?

                • @MnM007: Still no points here!

                  • @Sharp: Mine are due on the 2nd of Feb so one more week of waiting for me but I am not holding my breath.

                    • @MnM007: Mine was 24 Jan. I wish I didn't transfer my star alliance points to air canada.

                      • @Sharp: Is it only aeroplan getting 50k tho? Not Krisflyer (gold status only but no bonus point)?

                        • +1

@Bargain-er: Only aeroplan offers 50,000 bonus points. You can get gold status from any star alliance airline.

                          • @Sharp: Thanks, 50k doesn't sound much but may be $ per point is much higher than Qantas haha

                    • @MnM007: Mine were due on January 26! Still haven't received my points either

    • same here.

  • +2

I should be getting the 50k points within the next few weeks but don't intend to use them. Anyone have any advise on the best way to sell them?

    • Have you received the 50k points?

    • I'm in the same boat as you so let me know what you end up doing please

      • Yes same here. I haven't received my points either

  • Do i understand correctly that we get status irregardless of the spend?

    • You need to spend $4,000 in first the 90 days from your card activation to get the Star Alliance Gold status.

      • I did get gold with 1st statement, but still no bonus points. Someone mentioned that maybe some of my spend wasnt eligible, but according to you the status and bonus points are linked (if i got one, i should get the other too).

Flying Virgin Australia domestic at 8am tomorrow. Currently flight is associated with my velocity membership. Any reason anyone can see that I should flip it over to my Aeroplan with 50K status before I head to airport?

    • I don't know if you have to register it under your Aeroplan or you can just show your Aeroplan card to get in the lounge? Pls let us know.

      • Showing your Aeroplan status in the app or by showing the physical card is fine.

        • Do you get a card? I didn't get one?

          • @Craze: I requested a physical card when I got the 50k status but haven't received anything in the mail yet.

      • +2

I didn't end up changing the flight details, and just rocked up to the lounge with my air Canada app showing 50k status and scanned my boarding pass and gave Aeroplan membership number and then was in :)

        • Just confirming (havent received points yet) but i need the Air Canada map and not the Star Alliance app. Does the SA app do anything?

  • Leaving a DP - Cancelled the card yesterday and Gold Status got revoked today. I chose Krisflyer…signed up back in May'23.

    • That sucks! So quick to cancel the gold status, but no bonus points for almost 8 weeks now.

  • Star Alliance

Did anyone with a middle name successfully get through? Where did you put it ? First or last name? I have a feeling HSBC did not send them my middle name… how to rectify this?

    • If anyone in a similar situation, I contacted Star alliance support and they are sorting this out. HSBC didn't send them my full bane

  • also on Aeroplan

  • This question was asked previously but not yet answered. Anyone know if this status can be used for other airline status matches?

    • Why not? Which non-star alliance airline matches status?

      • I want to know as well! Need access Etihad lounge :)

        • Don’t think Etihad has offered a status match

  • Is paying bills at auspost considered as eligible transactions

  • How do you get Singapore KrisFlyer Gold Elite /benefits or VA benefits by choosing AirCanada?

I.e. do you have to use your aircanada membership number whenever you book flights?

Just thinking practically, e.g. you are flying Singapore and you want them to recognise priority baggage etc, how do you do that to ensure they have your status since you are not technically KF Gold?

    • +1

You get 50K Status with Air Canada which is equivalent to Star Alliance Gold. Any Star Alliance airline will recognise you as a SA Gold and give you benefits like priority baggage + boarding, increased luggage allowance, lounge access etc. as long you use your Air Canada membership number.

VA is not a SA airlines - but a partner airline for AC, so you get benefits with them. Just use your AC membership number when booking with VA.

      • So in terms of getting an airline like VA or SA to recognise AC/Star alliance gold, all you need to do is put your AC member number when booking and you'll get benefits (e.g. priority baggage)

Do you also get this for security fast tracking? https://www.staralliance.com/en/gold-track

Currently I have award business flights booked with SIA with KF Miles. I am not even an elite silver on KF so basically I have no status. Am I better off putting my KF membership number or the AC membership number on the booking, or does it make no difference if I fly business?

        • @sacs2k1

        • Correct - just put your AC number. Gold Track isn't available everywhere, but if it is, you are eligible to use it if you are flying with a SA carrier and have used your Aeroplan number.

Flying business on a reward ticket, you'll already have access to the lounge, priority baggage/boarding, etc. - so doesn't really matter what number you put in (or don't put in). You won't be earning any points on a rewards ticket.

          • @sacs2k1: Thanks. It's my understanding that business award w/ KF number on the booking wouldn't include things like the gold track etc.

So no downsides to changing the business award booking number from my KF number to Aeroplan?

I am flying with SIA so assuming SA Carrier = Singapore

            • @evasive: No harm in changing the number from KF to AC. You will most likely get an Express Path / Priority Path card when you checkin which is what gold track is

              • @sacs2k1: @sacs2k1 And you would only get that express path / priority path card if using the AC number on the business award booking, not using the KF number? Or is it included with all business flights anyway.

Basically I'm just trying to work out what additional benefit (if any) in this situation that I would receive by applying for this card and changing to AC number on the booking :)

                • @evasive: It's included with business class. I don't see any other benefit of including the number. Possibly additional luggage - but business class allowance is generous enough.

If it was a non-award ticket, you would have received points and status credits too.

                  • @sacs2k1: @sacs2k1 got it - so really there is no point me getting this HSBC/AC deal at all just for this trip. Would only come in beneficial booking a new trip with the 50k AC miles or using the AC/Aeroplan number on a lower class ticket.

For hypothetical example, if I had the same booking with SIA but in economy class (award), to get the star alliance gold benefits do I need to make the booking FF number the AC number or does it make no difference?

Basically just wondering if entering the number in the booking instead of using KF number is what gives you the benefits?

                    • @evasive: Yup, if flying economy on any SA airlines including SQ, use your AC number to get SA gold benefits.

                      • @sacs2k1: I was told on another thread by another user that adding the AC number to the booking instead of KF should make absolutely no difference and to be recognised as star alliance gold or receive the benefits I have to physically show the AC app/membership at check-in. Is this true?

          • @sacs2k1: You get an extra 20kg of luggage.

          • @sacs2k1: I thought you're eligible for Gold Track on business class, IIRC I had that at Melbourne airport pre-Covid flying business with SQ.

      • I may also jump in here and query my situation.
I booked tickets thru Velocity frequent flyer in November last year (without Gold status) for a flight from Melb>Singapore 27th Jan 2024, now that I have AC gold status should I change my flight details to swap my Velocity membership number for AC number?
I guess this would be the only way to take advantage of the extra baggage/priority etc?
        cheers

        • Correct. Or one of the agents can do this for you when you go to the lounge and show them your Aeroplan card.

          • @sacs2k1: I'm in similar situation. Booked flights with SIA using KF and planning to switch to AC Gold online. Is the lounge access only valid for 2? I got 2 kids (14 n 11, not so young lol). Not sure if they're allowed but hopeful.

Also for Gold path/express/priority definitely we all can tag along yea? Thanks

  • Looks like govt spend or VicRoads payment doesn't count… just did a payment on Monday which should tip over the $4 spend but yet to receive e-mail on Gold status…

    • so VicRoads payment is not eligible to earn reward points?

      • Can't confidently confirm yet as I've since made a couple more purchases to make up the $4k spend. Received e-mail from Star Alliance on Friday notifying I'm eligible for Gold status. I'll have to wait till the next statement/points update is done and will report back if VicRoads payment was counted.

        • +1

Judging by other members' reports here and here best to use Sniip to pay to ensure considered as spend and points.

          • @Craze: I can confirm paying directly to Vicroads doesn't count as eligible spend- no points received so best to pay via Sniip.

Received my SA Gold status today, so will set a reminder to check on 50k points in 8 weeks.

third statement has now been generated and still no bonus points - i have contacted them to investigate, said they will get back to me in 5-7 working days :/

        HSBC,

      • +3

        Same here.

Called Aeroplan, and I was told that there is nothing they can do.
Called HSBC Australia, and they said Star Alliance should be able to help.

First time with HSBC, and it is a sh!tly experience.

        • what Aeroplane number did you call? HSBC got back to me today and told me to call air canada…

          • @offthetap: Found on their website.

For all inquiries regarding your Aeroplan points balance or any issues with your Aeroplan account, please contact Aeroplan directly at 1-800-361-5373.

You can redeem your points by booking online. For inquiries regarding bonus points or if you need help redeeming your points, please call us at 1-866-529-2079.

            • @Ohz: HSBC called me this morning and have now told me to contact star alliance directly in regards to the bonus points not being credited to my account…

              • @offthetap: Thanks - did they share the best way to contact Star Alliance regarding this issue?

            • @Ohz: I called 1-800-361-5373 twice. Both times they said this number only dealt with booking flights, even when I said the website says it's for Aeroplan-related things. Both people also gave me other numbers to call- one of which began with '1888' and the other '+1'. I said I was calling from Australia and knew these numbers wouldn't work. They insisted these were the numbers, so I tried. Obviously the numbers failed when I tried calling.

              • @Bmriel: It is a terrible experience, ever. ridiculous.

    • Ditto! Third statement and no points.

    • for the first two statements that were generated, have you received spending points in star alliance account? Do you manually convert them to Air Canada?

  • as i have issue with air canada account (they locked me), so I picked up Singapore airline. I cancelled HSBC credit card, as so disappointing. and after 1 or 2 days, Singapore air line lower my gold status to silver status :( . looks like you need keep your hsbc credit to stay on gold status

    • +3

It’s already mentioned in the thread. Pays to read through all the comments.

  • has anyone applied recently? can you share how many days it took you to get approved?

I applied in the first week of January, verified ID in branch, etc… submitted all required income documents about 2 weeks ago and i still haven't received the outcome. everytime i call, they say all documents have been received but it is still being processed.

    • Applied last Thursday evening, was approved on the weekend and received my card yesterday.

      • OMG….did you get anyone calling you to verify details? this has been such a painful experience for me.

everytime i call i get diverted to what i suspect is the Philippines call center, i don't think they have any credit card applications team based in AUS. because they only pick up the phone after 12pm AEST

        • I didn't as I am an existing customer, my partner did though asking to provide payslips even after linking hsbc to her bank. Approved day after. So maybe if you did the bank linking thing, go and upload payslips instead and call them to chase.

          • @currentfad: grrrrr this is insane :(

yes i did the manual payslip upload 2 weeks ago, then i called and they confirmed they received all necessary documents and will pass to the final team for endorsement with estimate 3 to 5 business days turnaround time. since then, every time i have called, they told me it is still being processed and they are unable to provide any update.

i'm going to try and get a hold of the Australian based call center staff and see if they can escalate

            • @k2k8k5: Suggest that you'll take your business elsewhere if they do not provide an outcome in 24 hours. They've had more than enough time to make the decision.

    • For anyone reading, i finally got approved after 3 weeks. so…hang in there!

  • Does anyone knows how quickly AC cancels status if HSBC card is cancelled

    • Don't know about AC but I had gold with Singapore..my gold was cancelled within 24hours of card cancellation….

    • read comment above (1-2 days)

      • There is no evidence of AC cancelling the status once card is cancelled. People in comments either had KrisFlyer’s or did not close hsbc card themselves.

Terms and conditions say that Your Aeroplan Elite status will be valid for the remainder of the current calendar year and next calendar year

    • Terms say very clearly the status is revoked if the card is closed

      • -2

True, but interesting how quickly it is actioned in practice. No?

  • Unsure if useful for anyone contemplating which status airline to go with:

AirCanada: Your Aeroplan Elite status will commence within 3 days of the status selection from Star Alliance.
Singapore Krisflyer: The KrisFlyer Elite Silver or KrisFlyer Elite Gold status will commence on your next HSBC Star Alliance credit card account opening anniversary date, unless the KrisFlyer Elite Silver or KrisFlyer Elite Gold status is earned from the welcome offer, which will commence within 10 business days of Star Alliance's request to Singapore Airlines.

Presumably most should be sticking with AirCanada to avail the bonus 50k points but thought lead-time to obtain new status is important also if timing with upcoming travels.

  • +3

Now well past the 8 weeks from receiving the "Your Aeroplan 50K Status starts now" email from Air Canada. But no 50,000 points received.

HSBC said I need to contact Star Alliance.

Have now asked them to start a case for me to investigate, which they say will take 5 days/ Not sure whether this is going to work or not.

    • That is why they give up to 2 years status 😂

    • I'm nearing the end of the 8 weeks since this email and I'm annoyed it still hasn't landed. Probably have to end up going down this route too.

    • +1

After that, Star Alliance have now said they can’t investigate and that I need to contact Air Canada.

So far I have raised with HSBC and now Star Alliance. Only Air Canada left but I don’t hold much hope.

      • Some very nice Canadian people tried to help on the phone from Air Canada but in the end sent me back to HSBC. It legitimately feels like I’ll just miss out on the points here!

        • +2

I got this response from Aeroplans facebook messenger "Hi thank you for reaching out. Kindly note, as Aeroplan does not have access to your spending information on your credit card, you would need to contact your credit card provider for assistance. If there is an issue, they would have to escalate it on their side. Have a nice day!"

I am trying to dig deeper from them and am asking who alerts them that the spend criteria has been met so that I can get them to inform Aeroplan. I assume it is Hsbc as the bonus points come directly as Aeroplan points and not as star alliance points so I don't see them having a role in this. Will keep folks posted.

          • +3

@Bruiserh89: Thank you for sharing, and that's basically what I was told by Air Canada too. It's an odd one since they clearly know that the spend criteria has been. met since they gave an upgrade to 50K status already. The person from Air Canada was able to see the date on their end that happened and know that it had been more than 6-8 weeks.

So I'm not really sure what they are waiting on. It seems like there's only a small group of people in Air Canada who would handle this promotion, which to them is a niche one, and it's impossible to get in touch with them.

I am wanting to lodge a complaint with HSBC as the next step, the only issue is I can't see anywhere on their website that they advertise the 50,000 bonus points offer, only on Air Canada website. So I can to some extent see the merit in them saying it's on Air Canada to fulfil it.

            • +2

@Uzb9811: I am learning more abut this:

              https://www.canada.ca/en/transportation-agency.html

Preparing in case I don't get my points. Have screenshots from Air Canada web site which has the 50k bonus points offer. I have the email from Air Canada informing me that I have achieved Aeroplan 50k status, which incudes a date.

Also looking if there are any remedies available in case they don't deliver the bonus points within the advertised 6 to 8 weeks.

Edit: assume that just like in Australia, every single complaint to the Canadian Transport Agency will attract a penalty/free for Air Canada, so more complains will equal more penalties/fees, which will make Air Canada more interested in fixing their system and allocate the points in time.

              • @MnM007: I also noticed this postal address on the emails from Aeroplan.

                Aeroplan Centre, P.O. Box 24000, Station Pointe‑Claire Dorval, Pointe‑Claire (Quebec) Canada H4Y 1K4

It would be a pain and slow but a letter could ultimately get to the right person.

        • Can you please tell me what number you used to call Air Canada?

  • Just thought I would share my experience about HSBC. Applied for this card and did the minimum spend and got the Star Alliance Gold and the 50k bonus points. However dealing with HSBC has been the worst. I had some fraudulent transactions in November. I noticed it within minutes and rang up the bank to block the card and then subsequently raise a dispute. The bank was quick to send out a new card but with regards to the fraudulent transactions, it was an absolute nightmare dealing with HSBC. Only after I raised several customer complaints and then finally raised a case with the AFCA, did HSBC reverse the fraudulent transactions 2 months later. I am actually not planning to use the card again and will wait just before the 1 year to cancel the card (so as to get maximum use of star alliance gold).
I have read on other forums that HSBC is quite problematic when dealing with disputed transactions. So for what's it worth. I would stay away from HSBC.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience. Good to hear your bonus points came through- just to confirm your selected status airline is Aeroplan/Air Canada?

Do you know how your card was skimmed/compromised for the fraudulent transactions?

      • Yes, selected Air Canada. And no, have no idea how the fraudulent transactions occured

        • How long did you have to wait for bonus points to come through after qualifying?

  • Do I need to make Air Canada Aeroplan account before applying for HSBC Credit Card?
