@Dealor: Free stopover is an extra 5k with Aeroplan.

              • @nightelves: A number of destinations nearby also fall within the 45k (+5k stopover) range - Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, Phuket, Penang, Jakarta, Brunei.

  • If using the card for govt services, I’d recommend Sniip app that charges 1.5% but the transaction is considered eligible for $4000 spend and points are also earned.

    • So gov and tax spending doesn't count right?
How about ATO? could we use sniip for all these?

  • just got my second statement and no bonus point showing :/

    • Same

      • just called hsbc and they said expect the 50k bonus points 1 statement after the statement period you actually meet the min spend. so for me would be after the 3rd statement is generated apparently..

        • +1

I met my spend requirements before my first statement was issued and my second statement came out last week. No sign of the points yet. I'll wait for next month's statement and then get in touch with them.

  • Anyone get Gold status email confirmation without the accompanying statement?

  • Anyone know if Revolut counts as spend with this card?

    • Haven't tried, but it will most likely be considered as cash advance and will incur interest. Plus no points and won't qualify towards spend.

      • +7

I've tried it and can confirm it works. I have topped up $3650 into Revolut with $27.74 fees and got the email to say I got gold two days later. Hope that helps.

        • Did you get charged a cash advance fee by the credit card at the end?

        • Thanks. I'm going to try this. Ik you got the gold status but have you received the 50k points as well?

          • @maverick1: Still waiting for my points.

            • @nightelves: What's your timeline like? I just did a $500 transaction at Rev…triggered a fraud alert..card blocked..

              • @maverick1: Did you disabled gambling? Happened to a friend of my as well when he disabled gambling. Got my status email on the 21st December so might have to wait a few more weeks.

                • @nightelves: nope…just activated the card…the first tran was at Rev, maybe that's what triggered it…should have done some lower value vanilla transactions first…

                  • +1

@maverick1: I did a few transaction first and then did $3650 through Rev.

  • +2

    Finally got my points today

    • Out of interest, did the timing of receiving the points coincide with a statement?

      • +2

Nope definitely not with the statement. Seemed to hit my account about 8 weeks after I met the spend.

    • +2

      Awesome mine too!

Edit: and no, my statement was a couple of weeks ago

      • +1

Interesting! 3rd statement coming up and no points.

    • Got mine too!

    • Yay, me too.

  • If i cancel my HSBC card does this mean i will no longer be a gold status Star alliance member? and im assuming i wont lose my aeroplan points?

    • Yep on both

  • +4

Another useful perk for this card could be getting fast tracked Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status with 10 nights stay during the subsequent six months after achieving Gold status with Singapore airline. The platinum status will be valid till the end of the subsequent year and give you free breakfast for two (and room upgrades) in most of the Marriott Bonvoy chains and hotel executive lounge access for two in select Marriott Bonvoy hotels.
It means if you qualify for Aeroplan gold in January 2024 and then change the partner airline from Aeroplan to Singapore airline after receiving the 50k points and spend 60K during 2024 and achieve Singapore airline Gold status in January 2025, you will only need to stay in Marriott hotels for 10 nights during January 2025 till July 2025 to receive Marriot Bonvoy platinum status which will be valid till end of 2026.

      The terms.
You may only request status with one participating Frequent Flyer Program each time you qualify and may not switch Programs during the duration of that status. Any status granted under the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card is withdrawn immediately if you close your HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card account. Offer is limited to new applicants only. Existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card or customers who have held a HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card within the last 18 months are ineligible for this offer.

You can transfer points to differnet star alliance but not status.

Note Singapore Airline has PPS members who get upgrade before Krisflyer members.

    • So for the period when you switch from Aeroplan to Singapore - you no longer have Gold status?

      • I would like to know this as well!

        • So,

          1. We can transfer points fr Aeroplan to Krisflyer but not the status?

          2. I thot the gold status is for Star Alliance not for particular airlines? Thanks

  • Would tax or licensing spending qualified or we need sniip to do so?

  • Is anyone here able to confirm if paying Zip Pay balance qualifies as eligible spend? Thanks

    • +1

Yep can confirm paying zip pay is counted towards the $4k.

      • Awesome - thanks for confirming mate!

  • Happy NY guys, I m going to apply now since it is the NY to take advantage of 2 years status. Dumb question, but do we have to apply star alliance before applying for the cc? Thanks

  • I have reached 4K spend at least a week ago (and nothing is pending) but I still haven't received the eligibility email. Could it be due to holidays? Or is the system automated?

    • same!

    • Same no email from star alliance about the gold status and $4k spending. Have you received your email yet?

      • Not yet. I'll wait for the next statement which is around mid Jan for me.

        • Just got my eligible email from star alliance

  • has anyone been credited their 50,000 points yet?

    • Yes, a number of people received theirs including myself on December 21st.

      • after how many statements did you get them? ive had 2 generated now with no bonus points

        • +2

About a week after my third statement is when my bonus points came through.

          • @hellwolf: Correction.. it was about a week after my second statement.

      • +5

I checked my Aeroplan portal, it says 50K credit card holder with a Star Alliance Gold icon, but 0 pts.

        • Ditto - still waiting on points to be credited.

  • I want to take a domestic flight from Syd to Bris with virgin. Instead of using my VFF number, do i select Air canada as my frequent flyer airline and put in my aeroplan number. Will doing this allow me extra baggage and access to the lounge?

    • +3

Yes - once in the lounge you can ask the staff to change your ff to Velocity.

  • How many days after statement end did people receive their normal spend points? (Not the bonus 50k)

    • Mine have been visible on the Star Alliance website on the day the statement is released.

      • Hmm it’s been nearly a week now and I’ve got 0 points. I met the minimum spend for gold too, which got applied - so the right account is linked..

        • I figured out that the points you earn via normal spending are star alliance points, not the points for the airline eg. Aeroplan or Kris Flyer points. You actually need to convert the star alliance points which can be done here.

          • @excusemesir: Yeah that was where I was checking - they came approx 1 week after my statement finished.

  • Completed my spending of over $4k around 28th to 30th, nothing pending. But still haven't received email from HSBC or star alliance yet about the gold status. Should I contact HSBC?

    • Probably not all your spend was eligible. If it was you’ll get the confirmation email after all confirmed spend.

  • Got my Gold status a month ago but still no sign of the 50K points :(

    • +1

It’s 8 weeks for points to come through.

      • Is this 8 weeks from obtaining Gold Status?

        • +2

After qualifying, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for the welcome bonus to be posted to your Aeroplan account.

          • @nightelves: Thanks mate. Looks like i have a few weeks yet to wait.

  • Woohoo gold my Star Alliance gold and valid till December 2025

    • On condition that you retain the HSBC card till Dec 2025. If card is cancelled I think Star Alliance will be deactivated also (happy to be corrected)

    • where do I see the Star Alliance expiration?

      • When you press the Aeroplan card on the Aeroplan app.

        • mine expires on 31 Dec. 2024,

no idea why it expires in 2024.

          • @Ohz: Because your gold was activated before 2023. If your gold was activated 2024 then you would of had all of 2024 and all of 2025

  • A bit late to this but I finally got HSBC card approved and activated. Haven't received the Star Alliance ID email yet.

Should I wait a few more days (card was approved 28 Dec)?

    • +1

I received Star Alliance ID email a day after activation but it went to spam so be sure to check there

      • Found it. Received today actually. Thank you.

    • so process is to apply for card, wait for star allianc email? at what stage do we give aeroplan number?

      • Yeah, star alliance email should come automatically after approval. The email comintains star alliance id which is required for registration, and can you nominate airline during registration and provide aeroplan number then

        • How long does it take to receive physical card? Been a week but nothing. Wants to transfer zip n afterpay payments to hsbc to fulfill min spend soon. Thanks

  • Quick question on a scenario: If we make a large refundable hotel booking with Expedia etc and then get confirmation of the status, and then put a refund request in which takes us below the minimum spend, will HSBC or Aeroplan try and change the privileges or is everything ok once you get issued gold?

    • keen to know this too as i tend to reschedule my booking a lot.

      • I'm guessing if it is statemented, then u might be ok? 🤷 BTW, do u know what s the minimum to get free travel insurance? &$500 per family?

Also seems like free lounge access only for holder + 1 guest, so family of 4 may not come all at once.

          before leaving Australia you spend at least $500 on your prepaid travel costs (i.e. your travel costs that you pay for before leaving Australia) and you charge these costs (e.g. cost of your return overseas travel ticket; and/or airport/departure taxes; and/or your prepaid overseas accommodation/ travel; and/or your other prepaid overseas itinerary items) to the accountholder’s card account;

If the cardholder becomes eligible for the cover available, a spouse and/or dependant(s) also becomes eligible, when each of them individually meets all of the following eligibility criteria:

          2.
before leaving Australia at least $500 of each of the spouse and/or dependant’s prepaid travel costs (e.g. cost of return overseas travel ticket, and/or airport/departure taxes, and/or prepaid overseas accommodation/travel, and/or other prepaid overseas itinerary items) are charged to the accountholder’s card account.

  • +2

Today it’s been 8 weeks since getting the gold status but no 50k yet.

    • Also in the same boat - no points yet. 2 months and counting. Nearing my 3rd statement.

      • Has it been 8 weeks since you received the Aeroplan email - You’ve earned Aeroplan 50K Status?
Or since you received the one from Star Alliance?

My understanding is that it takes 6 to 8 weeks from when you receive the email from Aeroplan.

I still have 3 weeks of waiting :)

        • I got the email from star alliance, logged on to Aeroplan account immediately and it was already 50k status. And that was 8 weeks ago.

          • @Sharp: And you never got an Aeroplan email?

I got one saying "Your Aeroplan 50K Status starts now" in the body of the email (amongst other things). I start counting weeks from the date on that email.
