    • same here. received the status email on 26/04/2024 and did not receive the point yet.

Flying Virgin Australia Domestically next month, can someone please clarify to get VA Lounge Access for myself + 1 companion, do I need to:

    A. Put in my Aeroplan Membership number in at the time of flight booking? Then ask lounge staff to change it back to Velocity Membership Number to still qualify for status credits

    Or

B Still put in my Velocity Membership Number at time of booking, but then show my Aeroplan Gold Membership at the time of check in or at lounge reception?

    • You can do either. The simplest would be option B though.

  • I applied and got the card via the aircanada aeroplan offer. There is a condition to spend $4000 in 90 days. I am travelling later in the year via Singapore air and will use the card to buy tickets to satisfy the requirments.

Now this card is the same as in https://www.hsbc.com.au/credit-cards/products/star-alliance/
On that page it has some benefits listed, one particular one is

0% interest for 6 months on flight bookings through the website of a participating Star Alliance member airline using your HSBC Star Alliance credit card21

Does it mean I can satisfy the condition of spending $4k on Singapore air and then also get interest free over 6 months ? Can park the money in offset ha ha.

    • @kanad i just did this and have just received confirmation i have achieved gold status. Im curious about the 6 months too but have to wait for my 1st statement.

  • With tax time coming up, does anyone know whether Zip pay to my super (voluntary contributions) will count towards eligible purchase?

    • best to call them… hopefully no cash advance?

      • So far using my card to pay off Zip Pay has earned me points and not had a cash advance fee charged.

    • Can you pay to super through Zip? You can't bpay through Zip to Australian Super.

      • +1

In previous years I've paid to Aware Super but the BPAY number was blocked when I tried this year.

  • Can anyone let me know if the $4000 spend requirement includes ATO payments?

    • +1

It does not. But you can use Sniip for the ATO payment to meet the requirements. Be aware of the extra fee.

You can use a promo code to get $10 off in Sniip for first transaction.

      • Planning to use sniip but for bug transactions the fee is a bit high regardless the $10 fee. Wonder if it is beneficial. Believe the fee is tax deductible? Thanks

        • I guess depends on how quickly you want to meet the $4000 requirement. You can leave it till the end of the 90 day period and use the ATO payment through Sniip for the remaining. You’ll have to be the best judge for your own situation. I wanted to meet it ASAP so just did the full $4000 through Sniip, the fees were $49.85 which I didn’t mind. I’m not sure if this is tax deductible, I’ve seen others in the thread mention it is.

  • Did anyone try to apply today? At the very last step, it says system error.

  • are u able to use the lounge without flying with the star alliance partners with this gold status. like say i fly with a budget airline

  • -3

I already booked my christmas holiday. Do I get lounge access if I a flying qantas?

    • +1

Is qantas a star alliance partner? Or does Qantas have a partnership with one of the star alliance members?

      The short answer is no.

  • Applied today, hopefully still eligible as applying within offer period! Thanks for sharing

    • Fingers crossed you get approved today then you will be eligible.

      • Does 'conditionally approved' fall into getting approved? It is conditionally approved pending review of the documents being uploaded.

        • Someone else may be better to confirm this but I think you need full approval. If it helps, my application from last week took a day to get fully approved. In saying that the website just says apply and get approved so conditional should count by that wording? Maybe ring and ask HSBC?

          • @rhabdoviridae: Apparently because it's a Star Alliance promotion, HSBC are not aware if applying within the offer period will eligible or not. Got Conditional approval this morning and can only hope it get's processed by today!

            • @sunarde: Do you know what needs to be done with Star Alliance and Air Canada? During the HSBC application, there is nothing within the application to link Star Alliance to the HSBC card.

              • +1

@wildstone: You will only get the email with a Star Alliance number (which you then use to register and nominate Air Canada/Aeroplan) after you have been fully approved

                • @rhabdoviridae: Thanks, how long usually would you get the email after being approved?

            • @sunarde: I got conditionally approved last night. Tried pushing through via phone but no luck

              • @dtox: Did you get fully approved after the 3rd then? I wonder if we can still argue that we applied before the 3rd and got conditionally approved before that so should be eligible for the 50k points.

  • I got it within a day.

  • I got approved pretty quickly. Applied on Saturday, got a phone call from Monday to verify a few income/expense details and got approved while on the phone. Got the card in few days. Problem is I couldn't register, called them up, found out my DL number is not matching, their manual registration didn't work, somehow their system didn't understand my phone keypress for setting a PIN, now I will have to visit a branch to get my id fixed.

  • @OP where do you sign up for this card, I cant find the "apply" button

  • Looks like the deal is still active and all references to expiry date have been removed. Perhaps OP or a mod could update the post to a long running deal?

    • +2

It still gives "Aeroplan 50K Status" (equivalent of Star Alliance Gold) but I can't see any mention of 50,000 Aeroplan Points.

      • Yes you're right, I misread. My bad.

      • So no more 50k points on offer anymore?

        • Correct. Gold Status – yes, 50,000 Aeroplan points – no.

  • I applied for this card a while ago but haven't got an Air Canada membership.
Can I apply Air Canada membership now and then nominate A.C when Star Alliance asks who I want to be gold with.
Assuming I will still get the 50k points as I had been approved / received the card before yesterday (when the card promo finished).

  • +1

United is offering 20k as the sign up bonus now. Not as good but better than nothing.

    • Where can we find this United offer?

    • Maybe UA's 20K MileagePlus is better than AC's 50K Aeroplan,
but hard to tell, what I can redeem 50K Aeroplan.

Well, for me, I'm already a UA member of 20-years,
so the bonus points can just add to my existing UA points,
however I'm also a Krisflyer member, and need to boost the KF balance too :-D

      • +1

For my use case, a one way business class seat from HCM City to Melbourne with Singapore Airlines costs 45k Aeroplan pts + $102 CAD, the same seat costs 90k United miles + $69.21 AUD. So the United deal is less than 1/4 the value of the Aeroplan deal, for me at least.

        • That's a great example of the AeroPlan points.

I still have time to decide, so thank you for providing that.

  • +1

got status on 24/04/2024, received 50k today.

    • +1

I also received my 50k today hitting status mid April. Takes a while but worth it for a zero fee card.

  • +1

Also bit late to the party, got approved on 6 June. With the 50,000 Aeroplan points offer no longer valid, is there any benefit in selecting Aeroplan vs the other Star Alliance members, eg Krisflyer?

    • bit late to the party

I haven't applied myself, and I'm thinking of doing,
so we're both "fashionably late" :-)

With the 50,000 Aeroplan points offer no longer valid

Looks like it's still valid …
      https://www.aircanada.com/au/en/aco/home/aeroplan/credit-car…

vs the other Star Alliance members, eg Krisflyer?

United also has a 20K promo
      https://www.united.com/en-au/hsbc-star-alliance-20k-promo

      • +1

Aeroplan 50K Status, NOT 50k Aeroplan points, so it's no longer valid. you still get the Gold status, but not the points to redeem for flights.

        • Aeroplan 50K Status, NOT 50k Aeroplan points

          Username checks out.

Thanks for pointing out my ageing eyes.

          • +1

@whyisave: Yep, what hawkeye93 pointed out. With no bonus points on offer, bit undecided on which Star Alliance member to nominate.

  • Am currently planning a trip and discovered you can status match this 50k status with Avis Presidents Club. Nice little perk

    https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/aeroplan/partners/a…

    • Umm not quite… maybe take another look at the link you posted.

  • Just for my Air Canada 50k / Star Alliance Gold status, had to wait the 14 days from satisfying the spend amount (got an email confirming it) but the status came through on day one of the supposed 14 day wait. Account confirms it’s valid until Dec 2025.

  • Most posts here indicate Aeroplan 50K is applied the day after the 2 week waiting period from star alliance. My two weeks was until yesterday but still no status showing on Aeroplan, did anyone else have to wait longer?

    • Did you end up getting the status applied?

      • +1

Thankfully yes! Took an extra day in my case for whatever reason.

        • Thanks! I’m on my 14th day and waiting for it to come in.

  • Just FYI, fraud related to HSBC credit cards are common. My partner and two friends had their HSBC credit cards used for international charges. HSBC blocked the card and eventually returned the money but it's annoying. There is definitely some internal issue or undetected leak related to HSBC credit cards based on the number of events (and zero events related to other credit cards).
My partner is just waiting for the next statement to be cleared to cancel the Star Alliance credit card (Star Alliance Gold hasn't been very useful).

    • Glad at least it got sorted in the end but annoying nevertheless. Why hasn't Star Alliance Gold been useful?

      • We fly Oneworld (to keep Platinum) and also have Amex/Priority Pass. Star Alliance Gold doesn't add much there.

HSBC identified the fraud (multiple charges at PlayStation Network London), contacted my partner, confirmed the fraud, blocked the card, but new charges continued to appear after a week. A total of 10 charges of $280 plus international fees, all eventually refunded by HSBC.The new card sent by HSBC was never unblocked.

      • If virgin lounges are busy they don’t allow aeroplan 50k members and prioritise velocity members

  • +2

I haven't received my 50000 bonus aero plan points despite completing the minimum spend months ago. Does anyone know which number to contact HSBC on?

    • Me too. Gold since 3/5.

    • I am pretty sure it took as per the terms in the promotion.

It was either 90 days or 120 days from getting actual gold on your Aeroplan account. Note the 50k bonus points is a Aeroplan 50k deal and not HSBC deal. If you call HSBC they will have no idea about the bonus points as this was advertised in Aeroplan website. They only know about the gold status.

Aeroplan has no customer service you can call. You can call but your be referred to the web pagem You can only lodge a complaint via webform if you can even find it. But yeah l remember literally it took forever.

      • Thanks. Most people on here seem to get their points within 2 months so I’m a little concerned.

        • When u get gold. Add 2 to 3 months.

I remember the process took forever. You get a message advising you have reached gold but takes 2 weeks. Then you get gold. Then it seems the counter starts then. Which is not great considering there nothing about getting gold status first but then again how would Aeroplan know you reached the spend.

Note if you intention is to buy points on Aeroplan and use them for business class flight a lot of the benefits are duplicate. If you do this the only additional benefit is the extra baggage and the extra person into the lounge if they are flying the same plane.

          • @pandadude: Hi, will buying points actually add benefits? I thot it depends on your level, doesn't matter how many points u got (U need to fly to be upgraded to next level)?

And is it better to buy business class with points or buy economy and upgrade to biz (using points) if anyone knows? Thanks in advance.

            • +1

@Bargain-er: To be upfront and honest it seems you really don't have any idea here. Upgrades only work if the airline you are flying on is the same as your frequent flyer. Not codeshare. For example if you fly Singapore Airline plane you need to have Krisflyer points to upgrade. If you fly Qantas plane you need Qantas frequent flyer.

For the majority of Australian this is not going to be Air Canada.

There are several guides explaining Aeroplan Air Canada with a purchase points promotion bonus speculated soon.

The biggest complain people have with Qantas Frequent flyer and to a degree Velocity is the lack of classic reward available.

Air Canada Aeroplan is an alternative program if people are willing to buy points on special. Unlike Qantas were you need to wait months to years to earn points and not be able to redeem them.

When Aeroplan has points deals. You can search what is available right now for redeem. If you like what you see buy the points on special and redeem them immediately.

It much easier for a person to compare is it worth it by having an actual dollar value instead months to years.

Aeroplan has a range of partner you can redeem point on and one of them is Singapore Airline.

In the end it depends where you want to go with how many people. At least you can have immediate redemption if you want it.

Also if you want to fly business class you are better off just buying or redeem for business class. Upgrades are subject to available and everyone want to fly during peak seasons. Also upgrade are generally based on your status level.

              • +1

@pandadude: Thanks for your explanation. Yeah, I'm a noobie for this business class redemption/upgrade. I was planning to accumulate enough aeroplan points over years to redeem 4 biz tickets to Europe for son's grad present. I can find 4 biz class Singapore to London legs (80K direct) but none available Melbourne to SIN leg (which I may need to purchase separately). Thanks again.

                • @Bargain-er: Why pick Aeroplan for this? There are no real ways to accumulate Aeroplan points in Australia. I'd suggest collecting Krisflyer (or velocity and convert to Krisflyer to avoid the 3 year expiry). You can easily find 4x business seats MEL-SIN-LHR if you book 300+ days in advance.

                  • @Autonomic: Actually, we can accumulate alliance points to aeroplan quiet easily with HSBC CC. Abt 20k in 2-3 months (including ATO payment).

                    • @Bargain-er: I'm sure you can also earn bulk Velocity or Krisflyer with the appropriate card too. The upside being the seats will be easier to get.

                  • +1

@Autonomic: Why pick Krisflyer for this credit card?

Without the bonus point offer the star alliance credit card is kinda of a waste of time. The sign up gold status is a gimmick. If you fly often enough to enjoy the benefit your most likely already a gold status with the airline. This card may benefit silver status members but for the majority of people this isn't the case.

                    • +1

@pandadude: I wouldn't pick Krisflyer for this card. I'm saying you'd be better off using Krisflyer program overall if you want to redeem 4x J seats on SQ, given there's no other Aeroplan earning opportunities in Australia and you get much better seat availability.

Had anyone received 50k bonus Aeroplan points recently? Thanks.

    • Got mine today finally!

      • May I ask when you got your gold status?

    • I’m still waiting :(

    • For mine at midnight

  • Does anyone know if you can keep the aeroplan points after you cancel the card?
Also if you earn any points on spend? thanks!

    • points earnt on spend go to star alliance rewards. here you transfer to aeroplan at 1000 star alliance points = 800 aeroplan, min transfer 1000 multiples of 100.

  • Received an email from Star Alliance saying that I am now eligible for SA Gold Status.

Then it says that I can now choose Status Airline that I wish to receive the status. Do I need to do anything? It says that I have until 17th to change.

How long after the 17th would I see the status getting reflected on Air Canada?

  • Can anyone confirm if 50K Aeroplan status holder has access to priority check-in, boarding and baggage when flying with Virgin Australia Economy? This article states otherwise https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/star-alliance-gol…

  • +1

Hi all. Been trying to use the points but not getting good flights with short stopovers hence thinking of redeeming it at the eShop instead. However, the eShop constantly pops up as 404 error for me and no retailers/promotions/categories available. I am thinking it could be due to location (outside Canada)?

Has anyone successfully accessed the eShop from Australia? Thanks in advance.

    • I haven't, but i don't know how much luck you'd get. Most stores won't ship overseas and even if gift cards were an option, probably only relevant for the Canadian version of their stores, even if they have stores in Oz.

  • Hi All,

Does anyone know where we can go if we havent received the points?

    CC approved on the 29/05
Nominated Air Canda when i got the Star Allaince email on 30/05
    Completed 4k spend on 05/06
Star alliance sent an email that Air Canda confirmed status on 26/06

Tried lodging a form for the missing points to Air Canda here a few days ago: https://accc-prod.microsoftcrmportals.com/en-CA/air-canada-c…

Heard nothing back. Not even an confirmation email with a ticket number which you are meant to get after loding the form.

Anyone else know what to do/had any luck?

    • I emailed star alliance and explained I was on hold for an hour with Air Canada before getting disconnected and asked them to please liaise with Air Canada on my behalf. Got the points after 3 days. Hope it helps.

      • I guess thats an option for petpet, but what kinda timeframes did you go through between getting the status and then the points. Looking at other recent comments it seems standard was about 2 months post getting gold status for the points to land. Petpet has only waited a few weeks.

        • yep, 2 months is about right to get the points.
