        Pretty sure it was two

  • I applied for this card early Jan, rec'd card mid jan, made spend before first statement which came out yesterday 19th Feb. I selected aeroplan as my status airline on star alliance in Mid jan when I got the card.

I have not got the 50k status as of yet. I only got the points for the spend on my first statement and no bonus. What is the trigger for getting the 50k status?

    • our timelines are similar- My statement got generated ysdty too…
I met the spend early Feb - got an email from Star Alliance on 6th Feb to nominate my airline by 20th Feb. Status usually reflects in 2wks from date of the email, so hopefully anytime for me now.
Have you received the email from Star Alliance - subject - Congratulations…?

      • Exact same timeline as me. I think tomorrow our status will appear. Hopefully our points too but guessing we might have to wait 8 weeks for that based on what ive read. Just hope we don't have to fight with air canada for the points…

      • yeah you get 50k status on the date it says on email

        • Just checked the air canada app and I can see it now says aeroplan 50k under my name so I assume thats the status granted now…

  • My first statement points arrived in Star alliance. Do I convert them to Aeroplan now or wait for 50k to show up and then convert all in one go?

  • Spent around $5k on card and only got 3900 points in star alliance. Does this mean some spend was not eligible or is the earn ratio different? Edit: I got the 50k status already

    • +1

According to T&C, earn 1 Star Alliance Point per $1 spent up to $3,000 then earn 0.5 Star Alliance Points per $1, per statement

      • What's the value of 1 Star Alliance Point?

        • Assuming you're Aeroplan, 1k Star Alliance pts = 800 Aeroplan points. Need minimum 1k Star Alliance pts to convert and can convert in multiples of 100. Log into your Star Alliance Rewards portal and click on the 'Convert your points now' button for further info

          • @detlef7: After receiving the 50k points, which iam likely 8 weeks away from, can you then switch status airline to krisfyler and transfer all accrued points to date into that program?

  • Just got my aeroplan 50k status and supposed to select 2 benefit in 2024. What's the consensus ppl select? I dun think we will fly Air Canada soon tho. Thanks

    • How long did you have to wait? Still waiting for mine since December.

      • Not the points, the 50K/gold status. Still waiting for points.

  • anyone cancelled this card?

want to know that will the gold status expire in Dec 2024 or the time you cancel it.

    • Comments above have said immediately.

      • sad

      • +1

i read through and it turned out all the cancellation were done by SQ.

i assume people who selected areoplan are waiting for their bonus point and no feedback on cancellation yet.

        • My Aeroplan 50k was cancelled for some unknown reason a few days ago even though my HSBC card is still open! Absolutely fraudulent this whole offer……

  • +1

This card just gets better and better - my Aeroplan 50k status appears to have been revoked for no reason. Checked this morning - account shows back to no status at all. Called Air Canada - waited for 2 hours (as that’s how long it takes them when you don’t have status) - they acknowledged it should still be valid and have escalated it. HSBC card still open with no issues. After the 11 week wait for points that should have arrived in 6-8 weeks - I am the end end of my tether. I could not recommend this card or program to anyone - it has been a debacle from the start. Has anyone else lost their Aeroplan status for no reason?

  • One of the worst application processes ever

Had to print an ID verification form and visit Auspost LPO to get ID verified as Brisbane only has CBD branch open Mon-Fri. Sunnybank is the only other branch and it's closed until later this year.

Went through online ID and bank statement verification during initial application.

Yet they called asking me to email payslip, ID (even though I verified via Aus post) and bank statements AGAIN to [email protected]

Quite the hassle… Lots of back and forth and redundancy. Aeroplan points seem unreliable too from comments

    • Mine was super easy, the identity check was all automated and done on my phone in a few minutes.
However, organising an additional card for my partner was painful, similar to the process you mentioned, but she went into a branch and they then wanted me to be there but I was at work and they never mentioned it on any communications they sent me. They ended up processing it without me, but it was a hassle to say the least.
Not sure why it was super easy for me, maybe because I'm already a customer (with their Everyday Global account (2% cashback with tap&pay, yay!)) or whether my partner is not a citizen with an Australian passport - although not sure why that was relevant because I never had to show them my passport and they didnt want to look at my partner's whilst she was there, Drivers Licence was sufficient. But it did flag something about the citizenship when applying.

  • If you book virgin flight via virgin and you are 50k air canada, do you get Aeroplan points for the flight if booked on cash?

    • Yes, mileage will depend on the fare class purchased.

      • we got virgin points for the sector. Didn't get any aeroplan points

        • Thats because your Virgin FF number was attached to the booking. In order to get Aeroplan points, you would have to remove the Virgin FF number and add your Aeroplan number.

You can't double dip (in most circumstances).

  • how long does it take for card to arrive?

  • So seems if you cancelled your card your Aeroplan 50K status gets cancelled as well.

    • I assume most people are still waiting for the points to be landed and not cancelled yet.

The status cancellation was reported by the people who applied before the points offer and all of them were with Singapore air, instead of Canada air.

  • Still no points. Izz from HSBC live chat is directing me to Air Canada but is not providing any details. As far as I'm concerned, my relationship is with HSBC as the points were contingent on applying for their card and spending on their card.

Sometimes the only way to get things changed is to take HSBC to AFCA and then they'll hopefully pay more attention to their partners.

    Has anyone done this yet?

    • +1

I’m bang on 8 weeks and no points. Believe others in this thread had luck contacting AC but was hit and miss. I’ve already AFCA’d HSBC for another issue (worst bank I’ve ever dealt with) so am sure one more won’t hurt.

Can finally see points in the Activity as of this morning - backdated to 14 Jan. The balance still shows 0 - but based on previous comments, it should update in a day or two.

For anyone still waiting, worth checking it here: https://www.aircanada.com/aeroplan/member/dashboard/activity

    • Same here. Mine's backdated to 18th Jan.

    • Nice thanks for the heads up, mine there, not showing on app still, so weird. Cheers

  • I just got my 50k points today. Backdated to the date star allaince said l would turn into gold. 24 jan. Note this not the date l originally became gold.

  • Got mine as well today :)

  • Got mine as well. Finally!

  • Got it as well

  • points arrived as well.

12 Jan - CC application conditionally approved
13 Jan - CC application approved
    18 Jan - Received CC
25 Jan - Met spending requirement
30 Jan - Got confirmation for Star Alliance Gold status. Given until 13th Feb to select my preferred airlines. Selected Air Canada
14 Feb - Received 1st credit card statement
15 Feb - Received confirmation of Gold Status from Air Canada

I have received Gold Status 50k Aeroplan on Air Canada but haven't received the additional 50k points

    • Also as a pointer, you can't do family pooling at the moment on Air Canada. Not sure if you need it but thought I'd mention it.

Given I was gold, I was able to give most of the star alliance benefits to my partner who was travelling with me. The only benefit that's not available to partners are the 40kg luggage allowance.

  • hmm no one has issue with aeroplan now? my account is deactivated immediately after register

    • I had the same issue before. Called the Aeroplan customer service and they solved it.

      • oh which number? I heard you need send emails with ID photos

  • Points in as well. Anyone going to hold onto the card? Have Virgin Platinum for another year so can't see much value in keeping.

    • +2

If you close your card you risk losing the Gold status…

      • Where does it say that?

  • +2

4 Jan - "Congratulations! Air Canada - Aeroplan® confirmed your new Star Alliance Gold Status" from [email protected]
    29 Feb - I finally received 50,000 points!

    • So it does take at least the full 8 weeks before points are credited. I'm still one week away, fingers crossed will receive points next week.

  • Can someone explain the key benefits of this? Foreign airelines are a bit confusing to me why get this one and not qantas points with other cards?

    • You're getting 50,000 Aeroplan points and Star Alliance Gold for no annual fee in the first year. Not sure you'll find any Qantas or Virgin card that is free for the first year, gives you that many points and status.

      • What can those points get you and is star alliance gold like the equivalent to qantas gold frequent flyer status?

        • A handful of domestic economy trips at a minimum. Star Alliance Gold gets you additional baggage allowance, priority boarding and lounge access of the top of my head. Suggest you research for yourself to see if it will be of value to you.

  • When i book a SQ flight as a velocity rewards seat, am i able to enter my Air Canada membership number during the booking?

Or is it restricted to velocity membership number due to booking as velocity rewards seat?

    • Would like to know as well

    • It can be sometimes difficult to do online, you can change it at the check-in desk/lounge/gate as well.

    Got 50000 points

  • Did anyone request for their aeroplan physical card and receive it?

    • Why waste another slot in your wallet when you can get a digital card.

    • I did - received it about 6 to 8 weeks after the request

      • Thank you, will wait patiently!

  • For those who plan on keeping the card beyond first year, I have some Q's about cost vs beneft per year.

My workings and Q's below, but ultimately I think keeping card comes down to how much you personally value Gold Status + 38,400 Aereoplane points per year.

Gold Status till 31 Dec 2025: So I get that if we applied after 1 Jan 2024 then your Aeroplane Gold Status is valid for all 2024 and 2025.

Q1 However, even though I am getting more than 12 months of Gold Status, wont HSBC come along at month 12 to charge me $450 card fee at end of first 12 months, so the extra Gold Status months beyond 12 months is not free?

Q2 As I understand it, if you cancel card at end of 12 months then your Gold status upto 31 Dec 2025 will also cancel (as per HSBC T&C) ?

So now at end of 12 month need to make chocie of keeping.

Q3 If you decide to keep it and pay the $450 card fee in year 2 (now 2025), it means you will only have guaranteed Gold status for the remaining months of 2025, as you need to requalify for Gold Status?

Q4 To requalify for Gold Status after 2025 you need to spend $60k in the 12 month period of your $450 card payment fee?

Q5 However, if you want your Gold Status to recommence in Jan 2026 you will need to have done that $60k HSBC spend before 31 Dec 2025, hence in a less than 12 month period?

Q6 Becasue you had to spend the $60k in less than 12 months and becasue of the HSBC points cap limit for each month (3k points at 1:$1 then 0.5:$1) then you will NOT be getting 60k points in your Star Alliance account, but less than 60k points?

Q7 Lets say you are stratetgic and break up the $60k spend to $5k a month, then you will get a max 4k points a month (3k cap + 1k at 0.5:$1) so 48k Star Alliance points as the max points you could get in 12 months?

Q8 This max 48k Star Alliance points then needs to be converted to Aereoplane, as I understad not allowed to swtich Star Alliance account away from Aeroplane as risk losing Aereoplane Gold Status (I personally would prefer Singapore Air)?

Q9 The conversion from 1000 Star Alliance to Aeroplane is 800 points, so 48k gets you 38,400 points?

Q10 Therefore the final value of this card in subsequent years depends on how much you value Gold Status + 38,400 Aeroplane points per year?

Q11 If instead, like me you have a CC allowing uncapped Qantas points, than a $60k spend getting you 60k QF points might be more valuable?

Q12 So what is 38,400 Aereoplane points vs 60k QF points worth to you? For me personally, I see PER to SIN one way can be 25k Aereoplane point in economy vs Qantas 18k points (abiet Jetstar). So 60k QF points gets me more trips to SIN than 38,400 Aereoplane points.

But that Gold Status for lounges and extra baggage allowance, is worth a bit, I am just not sure how much….got to hit the calculator again!

    • Given this is tested first in Oz not sure if there'll be leniency in annual fee reduction when time comes… doesn't hurt to ask, and if you get reduced fee then it may be worthwhile for some to keep beyond first year?

    • Will pay annual fee for next year, and cancel after the gold expires end of 2025.

  • I've booked some fully refundable hotels to meet the spending criteria and subsequently receive email indicates Gold Status will be awarded in 2 weeks time.

Can I now cancel these booking? will it remove the Gold status? or should I wait until Canadian Air status confirm?

    • +1

You are the reason we cant have nice things.

      • I got a trip coming up in Apr so will need the status confirmed before then. Hence the upfront booking.

I plan to make legit purchases to meet the spending requirements soon after.

        • Hi @rabkoa I'm in exact same boat just wondering what happened here? Thanks

          • @ErlichBachman: It's ok to cancel those refundable booking. No affect to already granted status.

I was only like $500 short so made that up in the next month anyway.

  • +1

Finally got the 50k points. Now I want to offload them as I won't be personally using them. I see the family pool feature is currently unavailable due to "misuse". Looks like the next best option is to buy a $500 Air Canada gift card?

    • or sell the points to someone need it?

      • They charge per point sold which pretty much costs the same. They've neutralised selling points

  • +1

I can see that the offer has been extended till Jun03 2024 now but has anyone noticed that once you click on HSBC link it doesn't mention 50k Aeroplan points anywhere. Does it matter or since its credited by AirCanada it doesn't matter. Thinking of applying

  • +5

So I got my gold status 4/1/24 and didn't get the points so I decided to take matters into my own hands. Called HSBC about it and they tried to handball it to Staralliance, but I stood my ground and said that its HSBC issuing this offer and setting the terms and conditions. Star alliance also sent the email confirming gold status so they have done their part, it should be HSBC's responsibility to credit the points. Then they apparently did something on the back end and got the points the next day.
Moral of the story: call HSBC and stand your ground don't let them handball you to Star alliance, it's not their responsibility that you don't have the points

    • Thanks for sharing, I'm not looking forward to the need to go through hoops to chase points… fingers crossed I'll get points next week when my 8 weeks is due!

    • Thanks for letting us know. I will call them once the 8 weeks period passes provided I didnt receive the points. I got my status on the 8/Feb

      • @clover, did you call and did you get ur points

        • I have got my points now. Dont even need to call

          • @clover: I've just logged in and very pleased to see my 50k bonus points added to my account! Not sure if it has anything to do with my calls to both Aeroplan and HSBC earlier this week. Bonus point is backdated to early Feb'24 (when I was eligible for SA Gold end Jan and Aeroplan notified by SA on my selection 2nd Feb).

            Good luck to everyone else!

    • Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks for sharing. I’ll give this a go in next day or so. Achieved gold status on 4 Feb and still no bonus points…

  • hi guys my account is deactivated right after i register, called air canada and they said can only wait the validation team to process, they only process till Nov last year now, just wondering anyone got luck with speeding it up?

and anyone knows what happened to the gold status and bonus points if my account is still deactivated? thanks

  • My 8 weeks has passed but (not surprising) no bonus points in account 😥

Is +118003615373 the right number to call? Just tried and not getting through.

  • So i achieved 50k gold status on 18 Feb but still no points. Consensus is 8 weeks for most ppl to get the points? I just dun want to waste time calling. Haha
