    • 50k points received 29/08/2024

  • Received my 50000 points today, exactly 6 weeks after getting my Gold status (19/06).

  • Doesn’t look like this offer is available anymore?

  • There are no sign up points anymore, can this post be marked as expired

  • Came late to the party, without having to read the whole 15 pages of comments, can anyone please confirm whether paying rego, council rate will be eligible for the minimum spend requirement please ?

    • I usually pay it through Zip BPAY or Sniip to be safe.

      • cheers

  • Oh dear, quickly applied and just notice that the offer is now for 50k status rather than 50 points. Conditionally approve. Should I cancel the application ?

    • The offer was for 50k status AND 50k points, but the points offer ended early June

      • I just applied today

        • are the points available or not? If not this post needs to be updated and the mods didn’t

          • @UberIsCool: No more. But if you apply from Pointhacks, looks like they are now giving 20,000 miles, which is not good for me as they have approved my application. I think I will close it as status is no use for me.

            • @yht: Thank you but I can’t see this

            • @yht: I don't think you need to specifically click through Pointhacks. It's advertised on United Website as well. Similar to this deal, you just need to select United MileagePlus as your status airline in your Star Alliance Rewards portal.

              • @xers: That link shows you don’t get Star Alliance Gold if you choose United so it’s not the same thing. I want points AND star alliance Gold

                • @UberIsCool: Where does it say you can't get Star Alliance Gold if you selected United?

Everyone who signs up for this card and meets the spending requirements get Star Alliance Gold. You then select a status Airlines and get granted the equivalent status upgrade from that Airline. If you selected United then you get 20,000 United miles on top of that. It's the exact same way it worked with Aeroplan.

                  • @xers: What’s this mean then: Please note: customers who select Star Alliance Points instead of Star Alliance Gold Status are ineligible for this offer.

                    • @UberIsCool: Read it again, it means exactly what it means. Star Alliance Points, not Star Alliance Gold. Nothing stopping you getting both Star Alliance Gold status (which also gives you United MileagePlus when you nominate United as your airline) and 20,000 United miles.

Star Alliance points and United miles are 2 completely different things.

                      • @xers: If this is true then I suppose that's something, if you were to fly United. Can those miles be used for another airline or something else in Australia?

                        • +1

@UberIsCool: Yea you can book with any Star Alliance airlines. Not a very good deal compared to the Aeroplan deal though. See my comment here for an example comparison.

  • I am confused is the Star Alliance Gold Status and Aeroplan 50K Status are two different things with their own benefits? Or does it just mean that I can achieve the Star Alliance Gold Status through Areoplan 50K status?

    • +1

Basically the same thing. Aeroplan 50k Status gives you Star Alliance Gold status, with Star Alliance Gold benefits across Star Alliance airlines

      • @yeahyeah thanks for clarifying.

      • I'm a bit confused, how do you actually get the star alliance gold status? I believe you have to spend 50k on the card per year to achieve it?

        • $4k spend is the current offer to get gold status. Maybe thats just in first year though, and not ongoing.

  • I'm a bit confused, how do you actually get the star alliance gold status? I believe you have to spend 50k on the card per year to achieve it?

  • My renewal is coming up on 15th Oct, but my flight is booked 17 Nov.
Anyone know if HSBC does pro-rata refund for annual fee?

    • are you worried about your flight being cancelled or being denied lounge access?

  • Lodged my application few days ago and received an email asking me to send copy of salary in the morning. I did straightaway. But I found that they sent another email this morning around 3am asking for the same, though the emails are different. The first one was from [email protected] and the second one is from [email protected].

Both providing the same method to upload the document. So I think both of them are legit. I am just curious my their system didn't know that I have uploaded the document. Has this happened to anyone?

I also missed a call from their application team yesterday, leaving a voice mail and I didn't catch the phone number that they said I can return the call. Trying to call the 1300 number and was told they're experiencing high number of calls, so I hang up because I thought it was just they need my copy of salary.

    • Updates: I got the approval email yesterday and got the Star Alliance email today.

I haven't received my card yet but how do I request for a secondary card (holder)? I don't notice any question about secondary card holder.

  • What's the best way to use the aeroplan 50k?

  • Do you keep the aeroplan 50k status if you cancel the HSBC card?

  • Hi All is the 50k bonus point through aeroplan still running? i just got my credit card approved today but the post said this is expired.

    • +1

The 50k point bonus has been over since June (i think you needed to be approved by the 3rd). Since then the offer has just been Air Canada 50K elite status. Which is exactly what it says when you click on the link.

      • Thanks. Woops miss this part. Guess ill go with krisflyer then

  • I just received my Air Canada Star Alliance Gold card, after being granted Gold mid June this year. However, it says on the card it's valid until 31 Dec 2024. I assume that should be 31 Dec 2025?

Not sure whether to contact Star Alliance or Air Canada now.

    • What does your online account say?

      • +1

Good point. It says 31 Dec 2025, phew. Guess I'll just use the app and ignore the card!

        • Can anyone confirm if you close the card you loose the status and benefits?

  • Grrrr, so applied and met the $4000 minimum spend requirement 18 June. Air Canada confirmed Gold 50K status 3 July. However, 8 weeks have passed and still no 50,0000 bonus points. I have seen others had trouble with this earlier in the promotion. I distinctly remember clicking on the offer through the HSBC landing page for the offer, but it appears the promotion is separate to the card and points credited by Air Canada? Could anybody provide the best place to direct my complaint to, Air Canada or HSBC?

    • I’m around similar timing to you and still waiting too if that gives any comfort

  • Out of curiosity, I'm about to enter my 2nd year on this card (reached the 60k spend).

Is there much difference if I decide to switch from Air Canada FF to KrisFlyer?

Does anyone have any insight into this?

  • Dropping this link here to OzB poll for this with card:

  • Hi All, for the $4k qualifying spend, it excludes 'Government fee and charges'. These always confused me, I know ATO cis a clear cut under the 'government' category but what about i) council rate, ii) property/land tax and iii) utilities?

    • I find good way around this uncertinity is to use sites like sniip, so they make the Govt payment for you after you pay them the amount plug a margin like 1 or 2%.

I dont use Sniip all the time only when I want credit/points for an ATO/Gov payment

  • Does the Aeroplan 50k status/ star alliance gold status get you lounge virgin lounge access? Can't really find any definitive info, it says possibly depends on which airline you are flying on?

  • +1

If you are flying Virgin Australia you can use your Aeroplan 50k status to enter Virgin Australia lounges with one guest. I just show them my card or app.

  • do you know if the Aeroplan Point bonus will disappear if I cancel the card?

    • I hope they don't as I'm planning to cancel my card in the next month or two and am not planning on using the 50,000 Aeroplan points until December at the earliest. They shouldn't disappear as they are associated with the frequent flyer account.

      • That's what I hope too.

Do you mind letting me know how it goes in December? I will be in touch !

        • Sure thing. I presume it will be the same as cancelling a card that earns Velocity or Qantas points, the credit card gets cancelled but the frequent flyer membership remains and the points stay in the frequent flyer account.

  • Datapoints from me:
    Approved 27 May
50k Status updated in Air Canada app about 17 July (maybe a week after i actually hit $4k spend)
Status confirmed via email 18 July
50k bonus points landed approx 28 Aug
