    What the what!!
Wow that is an amazing offer. I got this card few months back. This is really good and will finally increase the uptake of this card which is currently languishing.

    • +1

Yeah, I’ve sort of waiting for more perks such as this.
Time to part away couple of old CCs to get this one.

    • +1

      What the what!!
Wow that is an amazing offer.

Agree. I love Aeroplan jelly !!!!!!!!!!

  • +1

Nominate Air Canada® as your Status Airline through the Star Alliance Rewards Program will be eligible for the welcome bonus.

You may not be able to receive Star Alliance Gold status with a participating Frequent Flyer Program if you already hold, by any means, an equivalent or higher status with that Program

Existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card or customers who have held a HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card within the last 18 months are ineligible for this offer.

    • Bum..didnt use to be a wait

    • Also published on HSBC website.

I currently hold a HSBC Visa Platinum CC due to cancel early Oct, wonder if I'm eligible for this offer based on T&Cs? Only says customers "transferring from another HSBC CC" will be ineligible…

      • +1

I am also thinking the same thing. I have a platinum card and was wondering if I I can get this deal if I sign up for this card separately

        • +1

I rang up earlier and was told will be eligible as long as it's a separate application. Will probably still cancel the platinum and wait a few weeks before applying this one.

          • @Craze: Thanks

          • @Craze: I wonder if this is true.

            • @nightelves: I've just applied for this and was approved (existing HSBC customer, still had to go to branch to verify ID 😑), uploaded documents requested (payslip and bank statements) and did a follow up call to confirm they've received everything. Approved today so should get the card later in the week.

              • @Craze: How long before they approve you? I’m still waiting for my application since Saturday.

                • @nightelves: Not too long. Applied on Wed night 1/11; completed ID verification in branch Friday evening 3/11; uploaded documents over the weekend; did a follow up call yesterday morning and received approval e-mail later the same day.

Might be worth giving them a call to follow up on status?

                  • @Craze: Just got email to say I’m approved today.

    • do we have to sign up to Star Alliance Rewards Program to nominate Air Canada as the Status Airline?

      I'm confused at this step….

      • You are already in the Star Alliance Rewards program by getting this card. Within the program, you can choose a variety of partners to transfer your Star Alliance points into. You need to choose Aeroplan as the partner so you can receive the bonus 50k points.

        • Can these points therefore only be used on AirCanada?

          • +1

@ArtOfTheDeal: Points will be redeemed via Air Canada but can be used to book flights on all Star Alliance partners, and also Air Canada's other partners including Virgin Australia, Etihad, Emirates, etc.

            • @djtech: Thanks. How does this affect using points for upgrades etc on non Air Canada flights?

              • @ArtOfTheDeal: Generally, very hard to use on upgrades for paid tickets. Upgrade is possible on very few fare classes for Star Alliance flights. Impossible on Virgin Australia.

            • @djtech: I guess you cannot transfer points from United to KrisFlyer account ?

              • @yht: correct. For the most part airlines won't allow you to transfer miles between programs. Velocity to Krisflyer being an exception

        • thank you sir! You've helped me out heaps in the pointshacks community forum too - great to see you helping out the community!!

        • +1

You are already in the Star Alliance Rewards program by getting this card. Within the program, you can choose a variety of partners to transfer your Star Alliance points into.

I looked at the star alliance website, which only offers options to either enroll, or to login. If I am already on the program (card just arrived), how do I login to this website so I could choose Aeroplan?

Another question - should I already do this, or wait until I spend the $4K within 90 days?

          Thank you for assisting!

          • @CocaKoala: I'd like an answer to this top..very confusing

          • +3

@CocaKoala: Just answering this question in case it helps someone else.

            • Within a few days of your credit card application is approved, you should receive an email with subject "Resume your Star Alliance Rewards registration" from staralliance website.
            • This email will contain two things - a star alliance ID (exhibit 1) allocated to you, and a link (exhibit 2) to complete your star alliance registration.
            • Click on the link (exhibit 2), and fill up the required information like name, date of birth, email, etc. and the star alliance ID (exhibit 1). Follow the steps and submit the form.
            • This should trigger an email verification link to be sent to your email address. Click on the link and verify the email.
            • Now you should be able to login to the star alliance website using the star alliance ID (exhibit 1) and the password you selected while registering.
            • +1

@CocaKoala: Thanks Coca Koala, this is exactly what we need. Me was confused where should I get a star alliance ID from.

            • @CocaKoala: Can you sign up with Star Alliance using another family member's name, that is different to the HSBC main cardholder's name?

              • @delfredo: If you did, you wouldn't be able to link the two because they would be two different people. Your star alliance account may also be cancelled eventually as it would stand invalid.

    • How long does it take for the points to be added after selected aeroplan?

      • have you got the gold status yet? based on posts here it looks like about 2 months post status upgrade for the points.

  • +1

$0 annual fee for the first year makes this deal very enticing.

    • Although $0 annual fee for the first year has been always been around from the launch, it was deemed to be ‘not good enough’ for some I suppose.

      • +6

Previous deals for this card did not have the 50,000 Aeroplan points, meaning there were better cards to chase. This is now competitive.

  • +3

I am almost reaching renewal of this card in November. Might give them a call to negotiate any retention offer.

At the time all I got was a status upon spending.

To retain status for year 2, you will have to spend 60k in a year.

I am not surprised they have finally started to offer bonus points via targetted airlines, this card has been a failure for them and not as many people joining.

    • How did you go? Any offer?

      • +1

Renewal not due until mid-Nov, will try end of this month.

        • GL fam

          • @TightAl: Cheers big ears! I will let you know the outcome.

            • @abs898: Called them today, I am 3 weeks away from renewal with $64k spent in the last 11 months.
They said no offers to retain. I am not 100% sure if I want to keep it for next year so got them to check if I am eligible for a product transfer.

              • @abs898: HSBC isn't great for loyalty. I spoke to my relationship manager as l am a premier customer and he didn't even know about this promotion with the bonus poiny or the previous HSBC credit card promotion.

Premier customer service is design to keep you as a customer but actually you could get a better deal shopping around.

                • @pandadude: From my experience premier managers dont know much about credit cards

    • +1

Let me know too. I am one of the early adopter of this card.

I attempted to increase my credit limit but got rejected despite being a Premier customer and with good finance. I really hated their application team.

      • my comment above

  • How can we get aeroplan points in Australia?
Can we convert velocity to aeroplan?

    • That's the thing, only this card can.
Velocity can be converted to KrisFlyer but there is nothing else for Aero

    • +1

You can buy them, they often have bonus points offers e.g. 80% bonus was a recent one.
      Can't convert velocity to aeroplan

    • In addition to purchasing Aeroplan points, as I understand, a member of Aeroplan may earn Aeroplan points via flying with Air Canada or Virgin Australia.
Some hotel programs may also allow converting their points to Aeroplan points.

  • +2

    Can you use them domestically?

  • So who is Dung?

  • +1

Are these cards hard to get accepted for? I've got around 800 cred score and 2 credit cards atm

    • If you are making enough, you will be right

      • Oh yeah, forgot about salary being important here. Generally, how much would be enough for a card like this tho?

        • +1

I think 80-100 also depends on what's your limit on the other 2 cards

        • +2

          75k as per HSBC website

          • @currentfad: Are these salaries typically including or excluding super?

            • +1

              @Jay62: Excluding

            • +2

@Jay62: Gross pay. No one gives a crap about super

        • +2

I earn more than $150k and got rejected. My credit score is 900+.
I have another CC with $30k limit which I then lowered to $15k and still got rejected :(

It could be because of my home loan but it doesn't make sense to me as I don't have any problem paying my repayment.

          • @buddy03: I note the application form on this card says wages/salary AFTER taxes. Is this typical? Has been a while since I applied for a card, but my recollection is that they usually ask for pre-tax income figures, but maybe I’m misremembering.

            • @bargainator9: I have never seen after taxes, that's ridiculous.

              • +2

@Bdawg: Given the entire point is they want to know how much money you have coming in, how on Earth is it "ridiculous"? It would make far more sense if that was the norm everywhere.

                • +1

@callum9999: How does one know one's income after tax before lodging a tax return? I only have a vague idea.

                  • @Bdawg: You only need a vague idea…

Why exactly do you think HSBC has a better idea what your post-tax income is than you do?

            • @bargainator9: I entered my income after taxes as per the instructions in the form. I just estimated it the best I could as how would you calculate 'after tax' for investment income as most of the time the tax depends on your tax return, deduction, etc?

Anyway my online application got rejected and then I contacted HSBC about it. They asked me to provide supporting documents such as payslip and proof of investment income which show the amount before tax and then they rejected my application again.

Not sure what went wrong but it's a frustrating experience to be honest.

          • +1

@buddy03: Their rejection criteria is bitch. They didn't tell why and even though I was a premier customer, still rejected.

        • did u get a result on this? im in the same boat

  • +7

Amazing offer!! only need 45k Aeroplan miles for one way business class from MEL-SIN plus CA$128 in fees on SQ while it requires 68500 Krisflyer miles plus $91 in fees with Krisflyer. I'm sure to sign up for this offer :D

Hopefully Amex soon offers Aeroplan as their airline transfer partner.

    • +2

Aeroplan also actually has redeemable flights unlike QFF and Velocity.

      • I believe it is dynamic pricing for their own metal though? So mainly useful for Star Alliance partner redemptions?

        • Not just Star Alliance, they have a lot of other partners.

      • With SQ award space, Velocity would have the same availabilities as Aeroplan but their added on carrier charge is a turn off. Let's hope new CEO of Qantas keeps her promise of releasing more award space, not just economy but also premium cabin.

        • +1

From what I've seen Velocity usually has smaller limits on the number of tickets per flight, Aeroplan seems to have more per flight so much better for groups of 3 or 4 (very hard to get 3 or 4 seats with QFF or Velocity).

          • @CheapBrah: I agree. Aeroplan has access to more SQ seats than Velocity. They also have dynamic access to. So if a seat disappears they are able to offer other options.

On Aeroplan I booked a flight from Perth to Taiwan with a stopover in Singapore. Then Taiwan to Perth with a stopover in KL and transit in Singapore. Note the flight from Taiwan to KL is Eva Air and the rest of the itinerary is SQ. All business class.

In points this cost 190k and 454 CA for two people. I have doubt this is even an option on Velocity. It 45k per person in points to go Perth to Taiwan. 5k for a optional stopover. Taiwan to Perth with stopover in KL is 50k points. The stopover is great value but hard to find good value if you want to stopover in another city that isn't the transit hub. Without going up to 65k KL was within the 50k point value.

Out of Perth for Asia most of the options are SQ.

The whole value of Aeroplan is the ability to buy points for cheap and to have an reasonable ability to book business class flights using a reward system. People have to remember using rewards system means you need to book in advance and have flexible dates.

            • +1

@pandadude: So (putting aside the 50k bonus points) is it generally better to dump ongoing points from this card into Aeroplan rather than KrisFlyer ?

              • @grrrrr: Keen for an opinion on this also

              • @grrrrr: The question is can you earn enough points on KrisFlyer to book a business class trip before the points expire.

Remember SQ has two membership. Krisflyer and PPS. Without a doubt PPS members get better treatment then Krisflyer. Krisflyer gold and star alliance member only get access to the lower kris gold lounge in Singapore. You need to fly business class or be a PPS member to gain access to Kris Silver in Singapore.

Aeroplan you can always buy more points on special. Also the gold status last the current year plus next year. Not sure if it will disappear if you move airline.

Krisflyer points are a bit hard to earn if you don't live in Singapore. But the points have better value.

At current redemption both Aeroplan and Krisflyer will convert 1000 star alliance points for 800 Aeroplan or Krisflyer points.

You earn 1 to 1 star alliance points up to 3k a month. So the redemption value really is 0.8 points.

Krisflyer point expire 3 years after the month earned.

Aeroplan points do not expire if your account is active within 18 months. Note there is a temporary pause on this rule.

            • @pandadude: @pandadude: hi mate, what is the best way to add stopover on Aeroplane? (Do you call them or do it online and choose "Multi-city/Stopover"? Thank you

              • @jk88: Online. Multi city/stopover.

Make sure book with points is on.

Note I suggest searching your return trip first and take a look at the transit location. Normally these would be potential stopover location. Then book the trip with a stopover.

    • Where did you book MEL-SIN plus CA$128? Did you book via Air Canada website? Thank you.

      • yes through Air Canada Aeroplan website

    • Hi, noobie here. How do you convert aeroplan points to KF? Or we can directly book SIA with aeroplan points via SIA website? Thanks

      • Pretty sure you can't do either. You can however book Singapore Airlines flights using Aeroplan points through the Aeroplan website.

        • Ahh right, thanks very much for the info. Cheers

  • I got this too but wonder if it's targeted?

    • I believe members of Aeroplan received an email about this offer this morning, but it could be available to all who are going to join Aeroplan as part of their application for this CC.

  • I’m thinking it’s targeted
