Sign up with Referral for Free Visa Debit Card (Was $10.00) or Fee-Free Transfer up to A$1000 @ Wise (Formerly TransferWise)

750

To get this deal, you must be referred. I do have a Referral Link but didn't want to post it here incase it wasn't allowed. Below is what's showing on Wise.

"Your friends get to pick their Wise reward: a free transfer of up to A$1,000, or a card (if available in their region)."

Guess if anyone is looking to sign up, they're better off using a referral link instead of signing up directly. There is a forum on ozbargain where you can get a random referral link given to you :)

For New Customers only.

can you sign up and not put anything on the card?? I'm going O/S later this year

    • +1

Not too sure, might have a A$30 min deposit on it potentially.

    • +1

just load what you want daily. thats what i did when i went overseas. if you dont have more $$$ in the card, scammers can't steal it. And once you are back, make sure to zero your balance. Also, if the card gets haced, just get a new one for $10 or so.

      • +3

No need, just freeze your card after using, or if really paranoid, delete the digital card and create a new one after after transaction.

It is only the physical plastic card that costs $10 - you can have 1,000 digital cards if you want (no charge).

        • +1

I had Wise card details stolen (I think when buying TKY apple cards from some dodgy website). Started seeing transactions ping on my phone… so immediately locked the card. Contacted Wise, they either cancelled or refunded me for every transaction, i didn't lose a cent. deleted the card.
Now I have a dedicated digital card for dodgy online transactions, one for my wife, one for my kids, one for me. If anything happens, delete the card, get a new one instantly.

          • @braddsey: Same here. Got some Uber Eats and Walmart Canada transactions, the scammers got about A$30 from me. Wise refunded everything. Now I keep my cards frozen. The weird thing is that I didn't use that digital card anywhere online before.

    • +1

There is no minimum balance that I am aware of.

They have referral bonus as well for Referrer. its like $150 for 3 people. not as mentioned in referral pool section. not sure its targetted like revoult.

    • I think it might be A$145 at the moment for the referer if they refer 3 people & spend over A$300 in overseas transfers from memory

  • How much is a Fee on a $1,000 transfer?

    • +1

It varies depending on what currency you're converting too. e.g. if you're sending AUD 1000 to GBP, it'll be 0.49% (4.86 AUD) or if its A$1000 to INR it's 0.68% (6.77 AUD). I guess the card is "worth" more.

    • -3

      Is that a rhetorical question?

    • +1

Depends on how you transfer in the money.
If you use a Debit Card its a 0.something% fee, Credit Cards are 4.something% fee.
PayID, Bank Transfers etc are 0%.

    • not sure if it differs for different currencies but 1000 AUD to GBP was $5.30 in fees giving 491.09 GBP (logged in and did a quick calc using their tool)

      • fees are lower to bigger your transfer.

  • +6

Their exchange rates used to be very good and among the best in the market, but honestly, they are now the lowest. Not sure what happened to this. Personally, I recommended this app to a lot of people back then. Maybe in those days, they offered a honeymoon rate to attract more clients. Is there any other money exchange app or company that offers good rates?

    • +6

@Kas - and I thought you did the research before commenting about their rates being the lowest ? can you please highlight the best rate you found on any exchange website or app? might be that would be your answer.

      • +2

When you are doing a transfer in Wise, they provide a live comparison rate with others for the amount you entered.
In the past Wise was always the cheapest. Not so much nowadays, but they admit/show it to you.
I like this kind of transparency.
One time CBA was cheaper but I couldn't be bothered because Wise require less details from me when doing a transfer.

    • This was NOT my experience. When I change AUD into LKR and USD I got the same rates as those displayed on my Xe app - much better than the big banks or local money changers.

    • @Kas: this is just not true.
I've transferred 5-figure sums every month with Wise for the past 20 months. The average variance from the RBA daily exchange rate is 0.086%, and it's always been +/- 0.5% of the RBA daily rate.

Wise do charge a fee, but for me the fees have come down. Used to be 0.53%, but is now normally 0.36% or 0.43%.

Doing a spot check against XE.com, the Wise rate (1.6733) is better than the XE "new customer" introductory rate (1.66663). Better still than OFX (1.6408).

    • I had the same experience the rates were good, and nothing compared to them. When they increased, I started comparing with XE.com, and so far, XE seems better at least for last four months.

    • mate i trade forex and you are giving false information, they give rates that are exactly if not slightly better than the forex market because they are slightly delayed. you are not going to get a better exchange rate than wise

Is Revolut the better option these days for spending when on holiday?

    • +1

Revolut feels much more pretentious (or aspirational)
they getem single use/disposable virtual card tho
Had no issues using revolut card/apple pay in europe.

  • -3

Revolut still has a $60 referral credit deal also - sign up with the link (ozbargain links from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/revolut.com) , order a card ($5) and make 3 purchases of $10 but the deal expires 5th March!…

    • +1

Revolut referral is only giving credits to referrer, not for the person signing up
besides, every referral deals varies (from $60 to $100) with a different expiry date

      • Yep.
For some reason, Mods refused to change the Revolut referrals into a private message system. How many people would sign up and spend $30 just so someone else can profit big, prob can count them with one hand. Leaving it the way it is also broke their own guidelines: referrals should benefit both parties

    I found Up better?

Up was the best when I traveled to Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam last year.

    • Interesting.
I never heard of "Up Bank" before, and I just saw their Up Everyday & 2Up Accounts,
which are free for most standard uses, with interest being charged in the event the Up or 2Up account becomes overdrawn.

Wise and Revolut* are still the best in terms of Fx
Up, UBank, Macquarie and BankWest are not too far away
then followed by NAB (ex-Citi), and HSBC Global debit

Revolut is the best during weekdays, but bad during weekends due to the 1% surcharge
      Wise is overall best

    • If going to Singapore, Wise app seems to be able to use PayNow QR codes, which would be nice. It is in the Card section.

Alternative is to use GrabPay to scan QR codes.

      • Grabpay has been restricted for foreign cards. Was there in November and got a rude shock where my grabpay wouldn't work. Grab itself was fine but not Grabpay. Anti scamming laws.

Also unrelated but you can't keep the same number sim. It expires after 4 months for foreigners. Also related for Anti. Scamming laws.

        • Grabpay seemed to be OK in Singapore when I was there in mid-December 2024. Although I got money over from an Australian credit or debit card into the GrabPay Wallet first.

It's amazing how quickly I forget the details of how each service works (I went to different countries). Some had 1% fee to transfer money over. Some wouldn't work with debit cards. Some wouldn't work with one particular debit card (maybe Macquarie).

Everything worked though. I hope that Australia adopts QR payments eventually.

          • @hallo123: Just tried to top up using another card and the same didn't work. Says it doesn't accept foreign cards.

            • @Cheapsize: Maybe it behaves differently when you're in different countries. e.g. when running Grabpay in Malaysia, I had to set up again, in a different different set up to when in Singapore.

The (small) wallet balance I had didn't even transfer over. Just an idea. Don't really know. 🤷

    • Same with Japan (Up).

Also used it in Vietnam (TP Bank or VP bank) last year and it was great. Just had to find a few free ATM for good rates and no fees.

    • Up is good but AFAIK they don't have the option to create and delete digital cards (or freeze cards) like Wise, so Wise is probably a more secure option. I did have to use my Up card in one hotel in Sri Lanka last month because for some reason their system wouldn't accept the Wise cards. I don't know whether it was a Visa vs Mastercard thing ?

Wise obviously allows you to transfer into local currencies, which Up does not.

I used Wise, with Up as my backup card.

      • +1

Isn't Up cheaper for debit card transactions? Won't Wise still charge you a currency transfer fee

        • There is a small fee with Wise (nothing like big banks or money changers) to convert the AU$ into another currency, and once it is in that currency there are no further transaction charges. It cost me $7.76 to convert AU$1500 (which was 0.52%) into Sri Lankan Rupee and the exchange rate was 186.07 compared 157.00 at a local money changer. Using the Wise card in local currency cost me nothing (compared to most big banks at 3 to 3.5% of transaction value, plus a very poor exchange rate).

My Up transaction in Sri Lanka had zero transaction fee as as well, and the exchange rate on the day was 184.6, which was pretty good as well.

The only downsides to Up (vs Wise) is that it is a more "traditional" debit card, whereas Wise offers the ability to hold about 50 foreign currencies, and also create, freeze & delete "temporary" digital cards at will, which is better from a security point of view.

        • -1

Depends on the rate. Most debit cards use master card or visa card exchange rate. In this case Up uses master cards rate for payments excluding transfers.

Wise says they use the mid rate interbank exchange rate and has an exchange fee.

The difference sometime can be same, small or large depending on the rate of the day. Note master card keeps the previously date exchanges rate for slight longer than visa. For master card and visa card once an exchange rate is set, its set for the day.

Wise exchange rate keeps changing. All Wise does is pick a day when the exchange rate changes a lot and uses this as an example.

In the end its up to a person to pick the best and most convenient product for themselves.

No one gets the bank rates unless your a bank. There always some fee either in the exchanges rate or shown.

Note some overseas merchant will add an additional surcharge to overseas payments. This is a seperate surcharge to any surcharge a person card provides. If a merchant accepted an overseas card their bank normally charges a higher fee than a local card. Wise is able to avoid this surcharge with direct transfer but you will lose the protect of been able to dispute the transaction under the card rules.

  • +3

be aware, $1000 is one time. if your 1st transaction is 100$, it will apply only for 100$. thats it.

  • Beware! Every referral have slightly different offer
Also depending which country the referrer has signed up

    Some variations:

    • free debit card
    • free card or transfer up to 1,000 AUD
    • a fee-free transfer of up to 4,250 TRY
    • a fee-free transfer of up to 500 GBP

Check on the offer on the left hand side after clicking on the referral link before sign up

I'm wondering what people see as the advantage of this card given there are only two free atm withdrawals per month as well as other fees.

what’s the difference brtween this and up bank

  • Thanks OP. This post comes at a good time.

Interested to get a card for international travel as 3 per cent currency conversion of standard Visa or Mastercard can end up $300-400 on a trip if you’re paying for your accom in local currency.

From memory I have a Wise account already but have never used one of their cards.

Will read up more on Wise and UP.

    • +4

Highly recommend Up - also no conversion fees. Just need to find a fee free atm in the country you’re visiting.

Ie: if it’s Japan I had no fees at 7/11 ATMs, or TP bank in Vietnam.

      • +1

Thanks. Sounds like Up may be he safer choice if comparing with Wise, though Wise would have a bigger international customer base which is probably why there are more stories of things going wrong.

Looks like Up also has a mashup with Wise for some of its transfer features anyway.

        • I use Up for my everyday banking as well. Haven’t had any issues so far (touchwood).

The App is really good and if there’s any issues you can just message them within the app and they get back to you fairly quickly.

        • The only downsides to Up (vs Wise) is that it is a more "traditional" debit card, whereas Wise offers the ability to hold about 50 foreign currencies, and also create, freeze & delete "temporary" digital cards at will, which is better from a security point of view.

My personal experience using wise, I have been constantly using wise for atleast 2-3 years transferring AUD to Rupiah, Ringgit and SGD but mid last year I stopped using it, I transferred $3000 and the money never arrived even though I have transferred to the same (saved) bank account, the fund was already deducted from my bank and wise, tried contacting their customer support but they say they couldnt help.

I wasnt the only one, plenty of reddit reviews online here are some of them https://www.reddit.com/r/digitalnomad/comments/175zruz/be_ca…
    https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/warxpa/dont_…

    • Thanks for the heads up. Did you get your bank onto them like some of the reddit commenters? Alternatively there's always AFCA

Yes I gdisputed the transaction and chargeback, Unfortunately I had to lie and say it was an abnormal transaction fortunately for me they didnt look it up too deep because if they did they would have found out I have actually made several transaction to wise before. Maybe they let me go because it was my first time disputing/charging back transaction

    • Oh geez that's scary to hear. Hope you get that money back.

Starting to consider something else, like HSBC maybe

      • Yeah I got my money back by disputing the transaction and chargeback, but I kinda had to lie

    • Ah this was from mid last year? Sorry to hear :(

      • +1

yeah may last year, it was traumatizing to say the least

Be wise about this product …

    • Had 3 referrals but was denied the $145 as they said one wasn't eligible — make sure you have proof of your referral
    • A referral signed up for the free Wise card, but instead got free transactions fees if sending over $500, which was not the actual offer —- make sure you have proof of the special offer
    • Rates are not as good when compared to United Currency Exchange for AUD/USD — exchange the majority with cash and use Wise as a backup

Moral of the story, be wise about this and take screenshots of everything …. do your research.

  • +1

One handy thing with Wise is , you can transfer to local bank accounts in most country whose currency they offered.
I was caught a few times during my travel in India and Indonesia where I didn’t have enough cash and the hotel or cafe were unable to receive card payment. I was able transfer money directly to local Indonesian bank account, and was able to pay to any UPI number in India.

    • This is why I use Wise - you can get an actual bank account number in many countries. I'm a consultant and employed via an agency in Spain, so need a business EUR account.
When I get paid, I directly transfer from my EUR account to my local Australian account. I've got accounts in AUD, EUR, USD, GBP, SGD & TRY with wise.

    • Interesting to note about UPI in India, I was able to pay directly to Alipay account in China
