This card is not for everyone but with 325,000 Bonus Points seems like a good deal.

$450 Travel Credit each year
$400 Global Dining Credit

              • @poggers: Yeah I've churned the DJ card to get it's bonus points while keeping my normal Amex

        • What you can't face.

  • +16

    Lol @ the annual fee

    • +1

      Worth it IMO.

      • +1

Only if you travel a lot, surely.

        • +4

The points alone are convertible to over $1500 in gift cards… Plus all the other benefit like $400 travel credit and $400 dining, Net-A-Porter credit, additional points earn for the 12 months you hold the card… the list goes on.

          • +1

@mickmac: Most people will not make use of the porter credits

            • +1

@shegeloaf: I got a couple of free tshirts. Not that hard to use up. I don’t get why “most” people wouldn’t?

          • +1

@mickmac: …but isn't the promotion for those who
did not have AMEX in last 18-months ?

            • +2

@whyisave: Yes? And what’s your point here? I found it valuable, and I did very little traveling. Genuinely confused as to your question. I was talking about my experience with it over the last 12 months (as I got a similar promo this time last year).

              • @mickmac: I was trying to reply to the "most people" part,
because many people already had AMEX in the last 18-months,
so they could not qualify for the promotion.

Now, upon re-reading, I see your quotation marks around "most" … :-D

        • Pretty much. And also less valuable if you travel in business. But if economy domestic on virgin or international in economy it’s really useful. Lots of lounges, 2 full PP memberships, free accor hotel night and decent points earn.

    • Worth every cent

  • +1

Just watch out with the referral points if you use a referral code, I never got the extra points on a recent application

  • +1

Have been waiting for this. Thanks OP.

    • +15

      Name checks out

      • LOL. that card is really old and long gone, but I'll be putting my referral details back in.

And hopefully "Andrew" gets some referral points from me :)

What is the conversion rate to Qantas FF points?

    • +2

      2:1

  • What could one do with 325000 Amex points?

    • Worth approx $1625

      • +5

that's if you just swap gift cards. Would worth much more if you redeem flights.

        • +2

          True it's the "cash" value

    • +40

Convert them to 162500 Qantas points.

Then fly return to Europe business class.

Qantas will cancel your flights, not tell you, not give you credit in return, charge your a cancellation fee, and then probably break into your home and trash your bags and some stuff for good measure.

      That's one option?

      • +7

        Or 162500 Krisflyer/Emirates Skywards/Etihad Guest etc

        Full list: https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/rewards/membership-rew…

        • +4

Yeah, I'd choose one of the other partners.

Guess someone didn't like me dissing Qantas, sorry Joyce, line your pockets some more champ.

          • +5

@teereb: I would definitely choose Krisflyer or Velocity over Qantas at the moment, unless you actually need Qantas points. Given Krisflyer and Velocity are both 2 to 1 conversion Krisflyer is very appealing but Velocity much easier to sit on for longer. Qantas are so unreliable and customer support in the absolute gutter. The horror stories in social media groups on a daily basis these past 12 months are incredibly demoralizing. Not to mention classic reward flight redemptions for business class have never been harder to actually get.

            • +1

@sidoz: And Velocity is the only one with decent Business class awards to Europe with either Qatar, Etihad or Singapore.

            • +1

@sidoz: I’ll be going Velocity… points don’t expire so I can take my time.

      • -2

I don't think you can convert Membership Rewards into FF points?

        • Source?

          • @foxes28: Confusion here I think. I specifically meant Qantas FF.

        • Only Qantas cards and this platinum card you can transfer to qantas all other amex products you can't

      • +1

This got better as the post went on. Well done.

      • Qantas can't trash my bags if they've lost them 🙃

      • You forgot that your dog will end up pregnant.

    • Well, you could convert them to 162,500 points on Qantas, Virgin or Singapore Airlines (or other flyer programs) or you could use them to get spend $1,625 on PayPal or get $1,625 statement credit on the card.

  • +2

not for current amex customer. :(

    • Since this is a charge card and different from credit card, should be applicable for current customers too?

  • +1

I’ve had it for the last year, think on less points for the sign up offer but there might of been a $500 discount from memory too. Definitely got my money worth. About to cancel as it’s not worth the $1450 without the points.

    • +1

Yep last year instead of $400 dining credit you got $500 actual cashback but 300K points instead of 325K (25K is worth about $125 if using for statement credit). I think I'd still prefer the $500 proper cashback in last year's promo compared to the $400 dining credit and 25K extra points this year.

Also definitely agree that if you don't make use of the travel benefits it's not worth hanging around past the 1st year with the absurd $1450 fee on the platinum

      • +2

We’re still eligible for the dining credit too just fyi… but I haven’t used it, yet.

  • +3

Weird, they got rid of the minimum income requirement.

    • +1

      I was wondering that!

    • +1

Amex desperately needs new customers, they are happy to approve a Plat card for you as long as you pay the annual fee.

    • +1

Probably to encourage people to sign up. I am sure there is probably an income limit in the background when they do the checks.

  • Amex plat had been watered down a lot with devaluation of points, this is only worthwhile if you are going to spend the money on dining/travel/accorplus anyway and if you can tax deduct annual fee. Do they still have afr subscription or is that gone too?

    • +4

No AFR I don’t think, but they do offer a digital sub to The Australian. Although they would have to pay me to sign up to that rag.

      • +4

Like it or not, the Oz is more far relevant (and therefore better value, IMO) than the AFR in terms of setting the daily media agenda that is ultimately picked up by the likes of the ABC, Age, SMH etc. The Newspolls are also interesting.

        • +8

          Nice try Rupert

        • The quality of journalism at the AFR is significantly better than the garbage pumped out by the Australian, ABC, the Age and SMH. It was a great disappointment to see them stop AFR and replace it with the Australian. Many Amex Plat holders complained.

    • Any pointers on requirements for the annual fee to be tax deductible? I do contract web dev as a sole trader

    • What would make one eligible to tax deduct the annual fee and how do you do it?

    • Could you explain how to tax deduct annual fee please?

  • +1

Anyone successfully received a refund of annual fee when cancelling the card after receiving points?

    • Don’t think AMEX does that. Even NAB has stopped doing that now

    • Amex never waived the annual fee, instead, they offer you some retention bonus points to keep the card opened. Last year, I got 200,000 bonus points when calling to cancel the card.

      • They have in the past on cards. From memory a colleague got them to waive a year on Centurion too, but that was before the annual fee got anywhere near its current crazy level.

        • A friend of mine got the initial fee ($5000) waived but still have to pay $5000 annual fee for the Centurion card. Personally, I got invited twice, I wanted to try it out and asked them to waived the initial fee + annual fee for the first year but they didn’t budge, so I didn’t apply because it isn’t worth it.

          • @T-man: The levels of travel insurance on their centurion product are pretty good. Far above their platinum card offering.

      • I settled for 80k last year, will hold off until i get 200k this year

        • So you don't instantly get the 325,000 points after you spend $5000 in 3mths?

    • +3

Amex US do, but Amex AU does not do that. Just got $48 back after cancelling my Hilton Aspire with US Amex and downgrade to $0 Annual fee Hilton Card

      • How to get a amex us card? Are you American?

        • Global Transfer. AFF forum has a big discussion about how to do it.

    • -4

      Financial Ombudsman

I recieved my annual fee back 2 years in a row on my platinum edge before i cancelled it

      • How recent was this?

  • +3

Just be mindful that the dining credit is made up of $200 domestic and $200 international. If you aren't planning on doing any international travelling then you won't be able to redeem the $200 international portion.

    • I’m curious to know if anyone has purchased a gift card to one of the listed restaurants and it worked? I know it says no deal in the T&Cs but I wonder how they distinguish between a GC purchase and a booked dine-in reservation.

      • FWIW, I gave a fairly hefty tip (~$50) when I used this offer at the only eligible restaurant in Phuket (Little Paris, highly recommend) and it was fully reimbursed.

      • +1

I reckon if you went into the restaurant to buy a gift card they wouldn't be able to distinguish… but idk. DYOR YMMV etc.

  • +14

People have been baulking at the annual fee and complaining about this card being devalued for over 10 years (seriously, look through the annals of OzBargain) but this is still a great deal IMO. 325,000 points are worth $1625 in statement credit right off the bat, plus well over a thousand dollars worth of travel / hotel / dining credit that you can easily use up if you travel overseas at least once during your first year. Not to mention the lounge access and best pick of AMEX discount offers, which has personally saved me hundreds over the last year.

    • +2

Yeah definitely. I've saved ~$900 this year just in offers (including dining, but not including flight credit). For me it's worth it, but for someone who doesn't travel, doesn't stay in hotels, don't care about dining, and don't spend much, I can see that this is not going to have a good return on investment.

    • +6

Not me speed running the 3 lounges available in Sydney to try all the buffets and downing all the alcohol my liver could handle before my flight 💀

  • +1

can i pay off my hecs/help school fees with this

    • -1

If they accept BPay, you might be able to use something like Sniip, with 1.5% surcharge.

    • -2

Use Credit Cards to BPAY Your Bills with $0 Fee @ Beem It

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/639861

      • not sure why you are downvoted? Does BPAY not count in min spend for AMEX?

        • No. And Beem doesn't accept Amex.

          • @vetopower: Thanks. I wonder if Zip would work, going $0 in couple of days

          • @vetopower: Sorry I would like to clarify your response 'no' because the previous question was worded as a negative. What is your response to the question below:

So does BPay count or not count to minimum spend?

  • My friend said that there used to be a complementary additional card perk where you can add another type of Amex card that has its own travel credit for free, increasing the cards benefit a little more. Is that now gone? Can't seem to see complementary additional cardholder perk

    • +1

It's been gone for a few years now.

    • +1

Yes unfortunately this is deal has been grandfathered for 3 or 4 years now I think. Current members who had this offer initially though, still continue to get the additional $450 travel credit with their coupled CC.

      • extra $400

      • It was the complimentary Reserve card which had the $400 travel credit

    • Can confirm that this is no longer on offer and only as the others say, on grandfathered cards. I called up recently about to cancel my cards and one of the chaps was kind enough to let me know that the additional $400 travel credit from the companion credit card ($450 for Platinum and $400 for the Platinum Reserve) was no longer offered, when I called in December last year (2022).

  • +25

Just a few points to consider:

    • the dinning credits in selected restaurants are $200 Australia + $200 global

    • dinning credits are per calendar year, so potentially you could get $800 in 2023 and 2024 January before your card annual renewal if you apply today

    • Accor plus membership cost $399 alone which you could redeem 1 night stay in Accor group hotel including Sofitel darling harbour which can worth over $600, also 50% dinning total bill discount in Accor hotel restaurants (when dine in for 2 people or 2 adults + kids when they order kids meals)

    • primary card + all additional cards can each being 2 guests to Amex centurion airport lounge, so potentially can bring 12 people to lounges (1 primary card + 3 additional cards)

    • primary card + 1 additional card can apply for unlimited entries priority pass (exclude food and beverages credits), just the priority pass worth $300 each

    • You used to be able to add up to 4 additional cards but the online application only allowed me adding 2.

    • -1

Centurion lounge changing unfortunately except for those who hold the physical card. Otherwise it’s around $50 per additional guest. Coming in effect Feb 2023 I think.

      • +2

Thought that was only for US based cards.

      • I thought that was for US members only?
