Use Credit Cards to BPAY Your Bills with $0 Fee @ Beem It

1771

The Beem It App now offers fee-free BPAY bill payment with credit cards.

Installed Beem it app long time ago while they have referral cash back but not lately

Recently downloaded the Sniip app due to the AMEX $30 cashback deal and found that the 1.5% credit card fee doesn't worth using it for regular bill pay purpose

Today opened the Beem it app and checked now the app accept Credit Cards (Visa / Master) which they initially doesn't

They also allow using Credit Cards to pay your bill with BPay without transaction fee and you probably still earn credit card rewards points of the spending

only AUSTRALIAN VISA and Mastercard credit cards accepted.

AMEX not accepted, and curiously, HSBC VISA is not accepted either (apparently it's not an Australian VISA even though I got it in Australia).

      • I would've thought because I got the card in Australia through their Australian website, the credit card would be considered "Australian".
Beem It clearly didn't think so, and you make a point in that Beem It probably detected HSBC as a bank is chinese and hence not "Australian", as opposed to the card being issued in Australia.

      • (it's an Australian issued Visa card)

      • +17

        HSBC actually isn't Chinese.

Fascinating, it's a british bank. Honestly didn't know.

          • @waterbottled: many HK ppl also think it is HK bank.

          • +2

@waterbottled: At least you're good enough to admit you didn't know instead of speaking with such authority then making a runner (looks up)

        • But funny that HSBC actually has license to print bank notes in China

          • +1

@Fuzor: Well Hong Kong's a special case, the system and right to print would've been set up before the hand back. The system is similar to how private banks issue Pound notes in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The three banks authorised to issue legal tender are HSBC, Standard Charter Hong Kong (subsidiary of British Standard Charter) and Bank of China Hong Kong (subsidiary of China's Bank of China). The notes however are all printed by a single entity majority owned by the HK Government.

          • -1

@Fuzor: You should post with fact instead of view-bait comment.

The one you are talking about is HK banknote. That is why you can see different design of HK banknote, i.e from HSBC and Standard Chartered bank or BoC.

            https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes_of_the_Hong_Kong_d…

"In most countries of the world the issue of banknotes is handled exclusively by a single central bank or government. The arrangements in Hong Kong are unusual but not unique, as a comparable system is used in the United Kingdom where seven commercial banks issue banknotes (three in Scotland and four in Northern Ireland) and Macau where two banks issue banknotes."

        HSBC is a British bank!

      • HSBC Holdings plc is a British multinational investment bank and financial services holding company. It is the second largest bank in Europe. Facts!

    • +1

I've been able to use my HSBC Visa since I opened it about 12 months ago maybe a little longer? Never had any issues but it is a debit card not a credit card. I use it to transfer funds because HSBC doesn't have PayID or at least they didn't when I last checked. Not sure why yours didn't work but maybe try again?

      • I use it to transfer funds because HSBC doesn't have PayID

        What a horrible mob.
        https://twitter.com/hsbc_aus/status/1407147305741041664

But yeah I use it on Beemit no probs…just wish they had Scheduled payments in there.

        • +1

Yeah you don't want them as your only bank but the 2% cashback on all tap&pay including through Google/Apple pay makes it my primary payment for small transactions. But agreed they aren't the best!

          • @Clarky77: HSBC receives transfers instantly from NPP, it just does not send them instantly.

It's no problem for me. I just transfer exactly the amount I need over to HSBC, so nothing is left in the account earning nothing.

I transfer from ING to HSBC and it is instant. Works great.

They also allow using Credit Cards to pay your bill with BPay

Thanks, I'll PM you some bills of mine to be paid!

    • +1

I've been using this BPAY via Beemit (for the past months or so) during the competition.

The only problem is it only shows txn as "BEEM IT BEEM.COM.AU AU" with no reference/details to the institutions you paid to, when checking your Banking app
(but it shows on Beemit only, just sucks if you're reconciling stuff via Bank portal.)

      • Is the BPAY using a credit card being treated by your credit card company as a Cash Advance or just like a normal credit purchase?

        • -1

oh i havent paid via credit card.
i'd guess Beemit>BPAY would catch it as C.A.

          perhaps someone else can confirm.

  • +9

If Amex is accepted, that would be a game changer.

    • +7

It'll only be a game changer if points are earned.

      • +3

I wouldn't mind it without points also, as long as it counts towards the spend requirements for getting the bonus points.

        • +4

          true, that's a good point :D

        • The requirements are generally the same (i.e. it'll be both or neither).

      • True, if this method earns points and qualifies as eligible spend (the two are usually synonymous) then it will be a game changer.

If not, there will still be the slight benefit of the interest free period.

  • +13

Unfortunately this is really a no go for most bills.

Most BPAY billers won't accept credit cards, you can look up if yours does here:
    https://bpay.com.au/look-up-biller-code-financial-institutio…

Also, if they do accept credit cards, most credit card providers will not give points for BPAY transactions.

I tried with a Citibank credit card (they explicitly exclude BPAY from earning points) back in March, and despite the transaction showing up as "BEEM IT BEEM.COM.AU AU", I got no points for it.

    • +7

My water bill, electricity bill and council fee bill all accept credit cards
Some doesn't accept credit cards including Rego (Vic Road), SRO Vic (Land tax) etc.

Normally I use AusPost app to pay those bills (that accept credit cards)
my water bills even accept using paypal as payment

      • Does the AusPost app charge a fee when paying rego and land tax?

        • +1

when I scan the BillPay barcode on Rego and land tax bills
it will prompt an error message that the code is not recognisable :(

          • @littlesoldier: Same for me, a lot of my utilities return "not recognisable barcode" on Auspost app :(

      • +4

I'd recommend paying for things with alternative services (specifically Post Billpay via PayPal) wherever possible. I'd only be using BPAY / Beem It as a last resort.

What credit card do you use? It would be interesting to know if you accumulate points.

        • +2

If paypal is accepted in AusPost Billpay I always use AMEX in paypal
otherwise will be using Westpac Mastercard

Will need to check whether these payment get points

        • You mentioned using Post Bill Pay and PayPal. Out of curiosity, is this because you can earn points in a round about kind of way if you use this payment method?

          • +3

@GreenGuava: In my experience, it's basically been guaranteed points when using PayPal via Post Billpay (at the full rate), whereas if I pay through Post Billpay direct, it gets classified as a Government agency, and therefore no points according to my credit card (or 1/2 rate on AMEX).

            • +4

@DogGunn: Thanks for the tip, that's really interesting to know!

I feel a bit silly as I've just mostly been paying things directly with my card (for bills that don't have a surcharge), not knowing that those bills weren't actually earning me any points! A shame I paid a bunch of bills not long ago too… :(

Will look into PayPal via Post Billpay for my next bills and see how it goes 👍🏻

            • @DogGunn: https://auspost.com.au/money-insurance/banking-and-payments/…

              https://www.postbillpay.com.au/help/payment-methods

So just to clarify, you go online and pay with paypal, you're not going in store and scanning at a terminal right? I was about to go to the local post office on my next early shift and try it out … good thing I didn't

              • @VeeKTOR: Going into the post office is different to paying online via the app or Post Billpay. If you pay over the counter, the biller will likely charge you an AusPost over the counter fee.

            • +1

@DogGunn: The PayPal / Postbillpay loophole is drying up. I used this method with the HSBC platinum card and Westpac Black to pay council rates. Neither of them got me any points. I even challenged this via AFCA, and they said Paypal now flag government transactions back to the bank.

Would love to know if any still work ANZ, AMEX maybe?

              • @tunzafun001: Amex still works for sure for Paypal. Council rates paid through Paypal, full points.

At worst for Amex, you get 0.5 Qantas Points per dollar with government transactions. Happened when I renewed by licence.

              • @tunzafun001: Shame, HSBC have been onto to it for a few years now as I didn't get any points when paying rates this way at least 2/3 years ago. didn't know Westpac had done it to. Always worth paying a few dollars in month 1 of your new CC via this method and checking your first bill to see if you got points for it or not. Then you'll know if you can do it for larger amounts that you might need to get bonus points.

        • +5

Gah where's the OzB wiki on this? I've been missing out. And I still don't quite get it, so probably going to keep missing out..

        • Silly me, I've been paying directly for some. Been wondering if they'd accept Amex and good there's a way.

      • +1

Some doesn't accept credit cards including Rego (Vic Road),

I can confirm that I paid my VicRoads rego via AMEX Registered via Sniip.

    • But how does Beem It work? Do you pay Beem It with a credit card, then they pay your bill. (So the biller would never know what card you used??) I thought the benefit of Sniip is that you can pay a bill with Amex even though the biller doesn't support it directly. Is this not the same??

The points are a show stopper for me. I've never checked whether I'm getting points with bpay, but I'd have just setup direct debits if I wasn't going to get points. That's this weekends job.

      • It gets processed as a normal transaction on your credit card, however the banks know it is for a BPAY payment, so you may or may not get points.

The biller gets no information on the details of the card used, only that a credit card was used to process the transaction (so they get charged the appropriate BPAY CC fee).

        • ah the vendor does know how the payment was made. thanks for the info.

  • How about prepaid credit card?

    • Debit card?

      • Coles prepaid mastercard is not accepted but I have a feeling that Eftpos gift card might be

        • that means no deal lol

  • +12

So if I pay my credit card bill off using my credit card I get infinite points?

    • Infinite money too??

    • +1

Interested to know about this as well.

    • only if you have an infinite limit on your card or infinite time.

      • -1

you can only pay with BeemIt with your credit card IF the Bpay biller code accept credit card payment, so you really think these banks and credit card companies are all that stupid?!?

    • -4

wake up and stop day dreaming.

  • +2

What about cash advance fees and interest from day one?

    • +1

Looks like using credit card to pay bill (BPay) in Beem it doesn't incur cash advance fee
interest will only be charged if you don't pay the amount at the end of the credit card statement period

      • +1

Each card issuer to their own so I would recommend confirming this first.

  • +1

Anyone know if you can use BeemIt to pay Brisbane City Council rates or Medibank Private Health Insurance via BPAY with credit card?

  • +5

You could have always paid BPAY bills using credit card via your own bank's portal (and earn points) with usually no fees. been doing that for ages. some companies do NOT accept bpay + credit card, irrespective of whether you do it via beemit or web banking. Superloop is one of em - but you can pay via credit card direct on their site, just not via Bpay.

the 1.5% credit card fee doesn't worth using it for regular bill pay purpose

But the splitt's 20% cashback with AMEX (as long as that's around) would still be > 1.5% fee though, you mean after its over? (>20/oct/21)

    • +3

You could have always paid BPAY bills using credit card via your own bank's portal

That looks like Citibank, which specifically exclude earning points for CC BPAY transactions:

      Eligible Transaction means:
      • any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, […]

      https://www.citibank.com.au/global_docs/pdf/MCG10988_0312_no…

Are you sure you get points?

I've tried on mine and specifically noted that I do not.

      • +4

ooops, I always thought I was earning points. I must have been sorely mistaken. Yeah that's citibank. boo. thanks for clarifying that up.

    • -1

Not all credit cards are bank issued. i.e Coles Mastercard

      • +2

        It's issued by Citi bank

        • what are you trying to show off?
          1. Citibank just bought it recently.
          2. Even so it still does not changed the fact that it is separate with Citibank and their Web portal do NOT have BPAY option like those direct bank-issued credit card.

  • +12

I'll compare fees between different ways (PostBillPay with PayPal with AMEX, direct credit card, ZipPay and so on…) and use the cheapest fee option.

Recently I found a flat fee of $2.5 charged by ZipPay is a good option. Can repay ZipPay with VISA/MasterCard credit card and earn points. So if Sniip charges a 1.5% fee, this $2.5 is equivalent to a $166.67 bill. So if the bill is ever greater than $166.67, I'd rather use ZipPay for the flat fee. If other means charges a 1% fee, it means for $250 or more, ZipPay is better. My strata is easily more than $166.67 so it would be a very good option when the direct credit card charge is 3.3% from Deft.

Obviously will also need to factor in the different point values and earning rate from the different credit cards.

    • Don't you also have to pay monthly $6 Zip fee tho?

      • +1

        I'm guessing this provision applies:

Pay your balance by your due date and we'll waive your fee.

      • +2

No. As $6 monthly fee only applies to ZipMoney not ZipPay.

      • +2

If you pay it off all in full by the end of the statement period, then the $6 fee will not apply.

    • +2

ZipPay/Money virtual card could work wonders too. I use it to pay bills which would allow online card payments. So that’s cutting off the $2.50 bPay fee. Card can be generated only on iPhone and Android apps afaik.

      • Any links to this? Zippay use up a credit check? Cheers

      • Also wondering, wouldn't that then be a visa which would incur it's own surcharge for most online bill payments. 0.5% or so?

    • I did not know about the zip pay option having a flat fee - thanks for pointing this out!

Have always direct transferred for my strata payment. This will allow me to collect a lot more points!

  • Does it also work for MasterCard debit?

    • It would - but I'm not sure there's much advantage in doing it with a debit card though.

    • +1

      Debit card should have EFTPOS

  • How about citibank premier rewards cc?

  • I don't get it. It's usually the Biller who doesn't accept the credit card or has a surcharge. How can adding it to beam it help?

    • +3

bpay is not a credit card payment. If you use bpay with beem it, they won't know if it's from a credit card or bank account.

The biller will charge you if you pay with a credit card number(not bpay)

The credit card provider will just know that you paid for something via beem it. They won't know if it's for a purchase or for a bpay biller. So you'll get the credit card points.

      • When I bpay from my bank, I can choose from card or from savings. If I choose card it either rejects or does surcharge. I assume it's the Biller going this

      • It would be great if it worked like that, but they will be able to identify that payment is coming from a credit card as you've discovered.

        • That's paying "to" a credit card. I have paid my electricity bill without extra fees.

          • +1

@niknah: Results will vary as you discovered and it will be interesting to test the below scenarios.

It could never have been expected that this method would work for paying into a credit card or mortgage, or other categories (online gambling?) that strictly exclude payment via credit card.

It should work in those cases where nothing prevents a business from accepting card payment but they simply don't offer the option directly.

Certain bpay payments via credit card are treated as cash advances. Will be very interesting to test that.

Some utilities companies apply payment processing fees onto your next bill. Hopefully this method might be able to fly under the radar even if they know that payment is coming from a credit card.
