This card is not for everyone but with 325,000 Bonus Points seems like a good deal.

Full value of the travel Credit is basically for Virgin only (and they only have Choice fares with checked bags, ie AMEX dont offer no bag Light fares). So you will never get an entry level flight as cheap as Virgin, but you will get the with bags price.

We have been making hotel and Jetstar / Qantas bookings.

Called Amex several times, and they cant get close to the pricing when booking any Airline other than Virgin direct, and not even close to booking hotels direct (or booking.com etc for that matter).
Looking at QLD hotels, and Amex was on average 25% more expensive. I have a $200 travel credit, but the cost was over $200 more for 4 night (and the hotel direct throws in a $50 food beverage voucher).

In summary, the travel credit value is really only at full value if used for Virgin checked bag airfares.

    • +1

Amex have been within dollars for domestic airfare bookings across VA/ZL/QF/JQ for me. A lot of the time they're even cheaper than VA direct due to the International Airlines Program that the Platinum Card has access to.

    • +2

It's a hit and miss. I got Singapore air tickets cheaper than other agents.

Their cheap allocation runs out pretty quick.

    • You can use it for car hire too.

      • Only if pickup and return locations are the same.

  • +2

Remember the concierge service on this card is great!

Why research and book restaurants when you can call them and get the concierge service to make a list for you and book it all for you!

The insurances on this card is worth it also!

    • The concierge service in Australia has gone to craps. They used to hold relationships with high end restaurants and hold last minute tables, but ever since they had an overhaul they've stopped that. Came in a few months before they started offering the split dinning credits.

As for event tickets, they're worse than what I can do myself online via the official ticket seller….

  • I have AMEX Qantas card… so it doesn't seem I qualify for the card offer T_T

Are there changes of being approved on 90k salary?

    • +1

That's a good question. I'd ring and ask.

      • +3

        And then post back here.

  • Is PP still offered?

    • Access over 1,400 Airport Lounges worldwide

You'll have access to over 1,400 airport lounges in over 650 airports across 140 countries and counting7, thanks to The American Express Global Lounge CollectionTM. Platinum Primary Card Membership includes access to The Centurion® Lounge, Escape Lounges - The Centurion® Studio Partner, Priority PassTM Lounges, Plaza Premium Lounges, Delta Sky Club® Lounges (when flying Delta) and Virgin Australia Domestic Lounges (when flying Virgin Australia).

    • Yeah, but be mindful the AMEX's version of PP is not the entire PP network. e.g. no airport restaurants

      • Does PP membership mean unlimited visits or is there a limit of say only 2 visits per year? Imagine someone flying every week.

        • Yes, the AMEX PP membership has unlimited visits. You just can't use it at "restaurants" that are part of PP.

  • Has anyone who have a plat edge applied for a plat and get the bonus points in the past?

Edge is a credit card while platinum is a charge.

I have an edge at the moment.

  • Is this worth it? $1500 fee for how much in $ terms innreturn?

    • littlesoldier posted this on page 2:

      • the dinning credits in selected restaurants are $200 Australia + $200 global

      • dinning credits are per calendar year, so potentially you could get $800 in 2023 and 2024 January before your card annual renewal if you apply today

      • Accor plus membership cost $399 alone which you could redeem 1 night stay in Accor group hotel including Sofitel darling harbour which can worth over $600, also >50% dinning total bill discount in Accor hotel restaurants (when dine in for 2 people or 2 adults + kids when they order kids meals)

      • primary card + all additional cards can each being 2 guests to Amex centurion airport lounge, so potentially can bring 12 people to lounges (1 primary card + 3 >additional cards)

      • primary card + 1 additional card can apply for unlimited entries priority pass (exclude food and beverages credits), just the priority pass worth $300 each

      • you could get $800 in 2023 and 2024 January

Something similar happened to me, where I would cancel my card
after receiving the 2nd-year of credits, and before the Annual Fee,
but for the '2nd year offers', AMEX would need to deduct the 2nd-year annual fee.

    • I think the bonus alone (325k points) if you get it (still got conditions to meet) technically covers the annual fee. So am certain it's worth it for the first year at least - second year onwards will depend on your usage of the perks.

      • so that covers it, but whats the rest worth?

Please click on the AMEX Platinum referral links (above) and apply to support our Ozbargain community! Thank you!

    • I do not see a referral link for this Platinum card, what's the way to benefit another OzB member and myself, do I have to select another platinum card and then apply for this one?

(Link above provides the referral link generator)

        Platinum Card: random (97)
        Referrer: 60,000 Reward Points
Referee: 90,000 Reward Points with $3,000 spend in 3 months + $450 Travel Credit yearly (not updated, please make sure when you click on the link that you get 325k points and it is the Platinum Charge card with the right specs)

Some Ozbargainers are a bit dodgy and include their Explorer card or other cards in the Platinum Charge referral link generator… :(

As a card holder who maximises the benefits of this card, my advice is do not get this card if you don’t frequently travel overseas. Otherwise you won’t find value by way of offsetting the annual fee.

    • What would you deem as "frequently travel overseas"?

Last year I did one Europe trip (however it was 4 weeks, so a decent chunk IMO), and this year I'm looking at doing something similar. I know once a year isn't considered "frequent", but doing a 4 week trip in Europe (so at least 2-3 destinations) can be considered worth?

    • Hmm even if you travel once a year but you hop around a bit could make it worth it. Value prop def used to be easier though (professional discount & Reserve credit)

      • Reserve credit being what exactly?

  • +1

Without calling (I will get to it over the weekend), is there anyway to check whether I am actually eligible for the points/offer? I rushed in without reading everything, applied, then got approved (email also received). I still have an Amex Explorer Credit card (the one with no annual fee). However, I did see someone mentioned that as this is a charge card, you may still be eligible for this despite having a credit card.

    • I gave a call this morning, as i have the Explorer travel card but it was a straight no you either need to be a new AMEX member or out of their system if you held a previous product for 18 months. i actually rang to see if there was anything they could do for being a existing customer (since 2017) but nothing for loyalty either, just got told i need to wait and see what promotional offers may come up in the year for existing members. i got 200k points but not sure what to do with them if i transfer them to KF i got 3 years to use them but i need to get more points..

    • If you still have the app, and have access to it - you can send them a message on the app and they'll let you know instantly

Does anyone know when this offer expires?

    • "325,000 Bonus Membership Rewards® Points is only available to new American Express® Card Members who apply online by 31 December 2023"

    • T&Cs say 31 December 2023.

      • That is a very long time before expiry. Wonder if there would different Amex deals come up in between now and then

  • Does anyone know when the annual fee $1450 is charged? is it within the first statement month?

  • if comparing AMEX Platinum with Explorer card,
the points earn rate and the travel credit offered is quite similar,
except 1 card has $1,450 annual fee, and the other is $395

Use the card comparison tool to see
    (hope this link works)
    https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/the-platinum…

    • +1

Points earning is also different - $1 spent for 1.125 airline point for Platinum vs $1 for 1 airline point for Explorer

      • Yeah,..that's why i was saying "similar", ha…
        …because at 3 x annual fee,
we just got to decide if that extra $1000 in annual fees
can justify the spending rate of collecting airline points
(which also devalue over the period of accumulating the points).

The good thing is, only for 'new members',
with all the travel / hotel credits offered,
and with discipline, you can take advantage of them…
otherwise, those credit can be hard to redeem too

    • There are different benefits. I have explorer ATM, but getting my partner to get the platinum now

  • How come the offer shows up even when logged into an existing current account? Showing me the max points.

Got a edge, but tempted to cancel to take advantage of an an offer like this in 18 months or so

    • Point is, after 18 months you might not get a good bonus point offer like this at the time. Which means you probably have to wait for a unknown additional peirod.

  • Great find. If they offer >200k for next yr or reduce AF, might be a keeper

    • Deals valid until 31 Dec 2023 from terms

      • I meant if we get the card now and instead of churning, AMEX offers ~200k in points to keep you next yr.

        • you will be lucky to get even 50k to keep the card, not luck for me for the last couple of years when asking for retention

          • @gotcha: Thanks for letting me know. Did you keep the card for almost full yr (cancel 1 month before) or when to finished using the benefits? The 18m wait is a bit annoying if going for platinum again

            • @jackking: I waited till end of annual fee was due.
Anyways I would not be churning Amex cards since I do not want to lose my grandfathered Plat Reserve card which gives me $400 travel credit every year.

  • Only a $1,450 annual fee you say?

    • +1

I find the good thing about Amex fees is they generally try to offset the fee by the perks provided. Now that doesn't mean the perks are good value - each to their own on that one…but at least they're showing that they're trying to provide the value of the annual fee back.

E.g. Trying to maintain (any) status with that many hotel programs can be difficult - most people can only do 1 program at best a year. So some may find value in having that. I wish they could do the same with airline status haha!

  • Can someone tell me if this CC comes with a digital copy (Apple Pay) version once approved so I can start spending quickly? or do I have to wait for the physical card to be delivered. Do any of the qantas CC's come with an Apple Pay version straight up?

    • You need to wait until you get the card before you can set up Apple Pay

    • +1

Westpac Qantas gives an immediate Apple Pay card to spend with.

      • +2

        Good on them

  • Does anyone know if I can pay off my zippay with an amex with no extra fees? I've been sitting on a 2K charge on my zippay as I've been waiting for another card to churn lol

    • Also keen to know this, have some PC parts to buy!

      • Apologies, this was supposed to be on the comment above

    • +1

I was able to use amex on Aftwrpay

  • How do referrals work? Is it 325,000 + 90,000 + 2x$450 travel credit? Or is 325,000 the max?

    Referral info below:

    Platinum Card:
    Referrer: 60,000 Reward Points
Referee: 90,000 Reward Points with with $3,000 spend in 3 months + $450 Travel Credit yearly

    • If you apply using this referral it means you're only getting 90k points, not 325k. It's best to apply using the link OP provided.

    • +1

They haven’t updated the referral info for a while I believe.

Just go through several referrals and some have the 325k points offer.

      • It depends on the referrers level of card. Only planonum card refered will get the max deal

      • So regardless of whether I go through a referral or not I just get 325k points?

  • Does adding your Amex to PayPal still work for avoiding any Amex surcharges? (I know some bills have a surcharge for PayPal, but AFAIK it's lower than their Amex surcharge).

Has anyone had a purchase (Amex through PayPal) refused because it was going to Amex?

    • +1

I have in the past, as in I've gone through to PayPal payment to see Amex is not a payment option. So if you can select it then you should be fine. I don't think you'd see a case where you could pick the card then later payment refused because it's Amex

but…I haven't had an Amex for at least 18 months so can't say what's happening now.

      • I've gone through to PayPal payment to see Amex is not a payment option

So you had the Amex already in your account as a payment source, along with other payment sources, and only the Amex one was unusable?

Or were you using PayPal without logging in, to hide your Amex card details from the website you were purchasing from?

        • +1

yes i had my amex already in my account and couldn't pick it.

          • @Maestrok: That's the info I am after. It doesn't always work.

            Thanks!

    • +1

As long as the merchant hasn't placed a restriction on Amex cards with PayPal, yes it's possible to avoid Amex surcharges by going via PayPal. I do this with my utilities.

      • Thanks, that gives me info I am looking for. Amex through PayPal can fail, if the merchant sets that restriction with PayPal.

I've been looking through the many ways to use Amex that are documented here on Ozbargain. There's also paying bPay bills through Amex, using Sniip as the intermediary. Now I'm trying to figure out if the Sniip surcharge costs more than the points earn is worth.

  • I don't want to use credit cards unless I must, hence would like to have one just for the sake of benefits. Obviously I have to do $5000 payments from this in 3 months which I could do (as I'm travelling overseas soon, but after that it'll be just left as is). Do you think that'll be worth it? Especially when you consider all the other issues associated with AMEX cards (not many merchants are accepting Amex, even if they do, they would charge a percentage on top etc..) I understand the value calc when converting points etc but when you consider a case of someone like myself who would be incurred with Amex related additional fees say worth of $200, that profit is already gone after all the hassles. Isn't that true? Or am I missing something here?

    • +1

      it's not a credit card.

Re. worth it….it mostly depends on your use of the perks (what you value) - e.g. if you're planning a decent amount of travel and mostly staying in hotels then I would argue the perks are probably going to be worth it.

Personally, if you're thinking re. profit just in dollar value then this sort of card is probably not for you (as mentioned throughout the thread there are probably a lot of other cards with lower fees that can provide a better points/dollar value).

In saying all that, I wouldn't think there'd be anything wrong with you getting the card, using all its benefits for your travel, then cancelling it after? I'm not aware of any issues with not keeping the card.

      • I understand people wanting to stay in good hotels and fly in business class etc but I would rather stay in a budget place and fly in economy and use that saving to go to another country instead. In my case scenario, these hotel perks probably won't mean much will it? If you're searching in booking.com and pick the cheapest hotel out there with some reasonable ratings of course, the chances of that hotel offering Amex perks would be next to nil😛

        • +1

Depends, the free hotel status can be handy. I'm like you in that I'm more than happy to pay for cheaper hotels when travelling as it's just a place to rest to be able to spend on more travel or finer dinning. The Amex Plat Card comes with Accor Plus that has good discounted rates (30-50%) off places like Mercure, Novotel, Ibis/Ibis Styles. Between the discounts and points earn pricing comes out around the same as cheap independents.

          • @Trance N Dance: Great. Thanks for your input, so they also cover budget places it seems.. Good to know. I will apply in this case. Cheers

        • It doesn't sound like this card is suitable for you then. Maybe consider a credit card with no foreign transaction fees so you can use it during your travel overseas?

          • @greenie: I already have one but never use it in day today expenses (except for pre-travel expenses like flights and accommodation) I only use my debit card for expenses (so I'm on top of my expenses). I am leaning towards getting this card now seeing benefits are for budget travelers as well

            • @npnp: I agree with geenies comment, doesn't sound like this is the card for you.

This is for someone who runs all their expenses via this card to make the yearly fees worth it and use all the benefits.

              • @abs898: I don't have any expenses to run through the card but more than make up the annual fee each year in travel benefits. Last year alone I saved like $500 in hotel costs from Accor Plus alone.

            • @npnp:

I only use my debit card for expenses (so I'm on top of my expenses).

You can bPay AMEX as often as you want and keep the balance to $nil, effectively only using the charge card for points and keep on top of expenses.

              • @kipps: That I can do (if all the merchants out there take AMEX cards without any fees or charges on-top).

              • @kipps: But why? You're losing out on interest if you stick that money into a savings account instead. Sure it might not be much but it's better than paying the card off right away as you use it.

                • @Trance N Dance: There’s studies confirming that people are more likely to spend on a credit card than if they use their own money. worked for me. I’m keeping my charge card. The interest on even a balance of $7,000 per month at 4% is at most $23/month (likely halved given payment cycles). I saved a lot more than this.

  • +1

How many cards on an average do the other Ozbargainer applicants have while applying for this card?

    • +2

      I have 3 and a mortgage

  • +1

I haven't had a credit card in a very long time, does anyone know if it's possible to do a joint application? Pros/Cons?

Also, if a joint application is possible, can the $450 travel credit be doubled, one for myself and one for the partner? I highly doubt this, but worth a ask.

    • You can't do a joint application.

    • No joint with amex.

    • +1

This is not a credit card. Also, supposedly does not affect the credit score adversely in terms or borrowing capacity for a home loan

  • +2

Of course if you don’t really care about the other perks then this deal seems worse than the Citi Prestige one ($350 fee 1st year, getting 120k KrisFlyer miles).

With 162.5k KF miles from this Amex deal, you can have 2 return business class tickets to some countries (e.g. Perth to Singapore/Vietnam). That’s around AUD$6000 if pay by cash. Return eco class ticket is already $600-$700 per pax so to me it’s pretty good.

    • Thanks for sharing mate. Looks like a tempting option. If I were to choose between these two offers I’d probably go for Citi one. Will consider applying.

      • +1

For sure. I’m currently having that Citi and it’s great especially for 1 airport transfer trip, and Priority pass membership. I’ll also apply for this Amex as well to get more points.

        • Just applied for Citi Prestige. Will see how it goes.

          • +1

@Ievgen: I’m leaning towards same. Given I have a family of 5 having meal options is probably better than lounge.

        • The Citi Priority Pass also includes restaurant partner credits (which Amex don't).
