    • What do you mean by $250 no fee?

      • +2

The first year fee is waived off only for existing westpac customers else you will be charged $250 as annual card fee

    • +6

Not a valid reason to neg.

      • +3

Not a valid reason to neg.

Agreed. It's listed in the title, and description

        • Got listed after I had called it out. Was hidden earlier.

  • Would have loved to have seen this BEFORE I went and purchased some things from Apple XD

  • See what doesn't apply
    -Interest
    -Fees and charges
    -Cash or ATM cash advances
    -Cash equivalent transactions
    -Gambling transactions
-Payments to the Australian Tax Office
    -Government charges

    -BPAY ® or similar transactions

    -Refunds
-Balance transfers debited from the card account

which means paying utility bills doesn't count?!

    • Bills work fine if you setup direct debit. I even did a private PayPal purchase to someone ( via Goods and services) and I got the points for the transaction.

      • ah ok - I'll check my ANZ Black, I just did a BPay payment

    • +2

I've had these counted by some banks that say this when you pay with your credit card on their website instead of BPay.

      • ^ This. Pay your bills on the billers website using your credit card. Don’t pay them using BPAY.

    • Government charges? Being what exactly?

      • I think refers to fines… Not sure.

    • Thanks for posting this. I'm a month into earning my (hopefully not worthless) Velocity points, and was planning on having my $1000 strata fees paid by boat count towards the $4000, but now I know it won't. I'll likely have to stock up on Woolworths eGift cards. The original plan was to pay for some travel expenses, but we all know that isn't happening any time soon.

  • Didn't they use to waive the $50 fee too?

    • The last 2 times I’ve had the Westpac card they’ve said there was a $50 fee but never actually charged it.

      • I got charged the $50 velocity fee last month

        • Sorry I should have added I opted for the qantas points both times.

          • +1

@Slo20: I just got charged the $50 "Qantas Rewards Fee" on this card. It's the last transaction on the first statement.

But last 2 times my spouse or I had a Westpac rewards card (Westpac Altitude Black Amex & MasterCard bundle + the platinum bundle, both in late 2018), they did not charge this fee.

I.e. they have fixed that glitch :-(

            • @nickj: Oh bummer. It was a good run while it lasted

  • Westpac paid my points as soon as I hit the spend limit on my 2nd Months bill which was nice, didn't have to chase them up…too bad I signed up for Velocity though!

  • Hmmm I applied for this exact card 2 days ago - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/535342 but haven't been accepted yet.

Assume I'll still be eligible for the waived fee?

  • Are you eligible if you have the 55 day plat card?

  • Currently on a St George Black Visa Signature. Always get confused with their affiliation with Westpac. Am I eligible for this offer?

    • +1

Most likely yes, I got a St George Card bonus offer right after cancelling a westpac card so would assume the same other way around.

  • +1

Crap the fee free is not applicable to non-Westpac Customers.

Signing up for a transaction account is a bit of a pain too.

  • Not an existing customer with Westpac. An online eSaver account should do the trick?

    • yes.
you should be able to get a free $50 for that saver account.

edit: you used to be able to, but it may be only avail. for under 30s now.

      • haha I wish I was under 30

        • +1

they've changed it, used to be everyone.
          dirty dogs ;)

      • "To open a Westpac eSaver, customers must hold a Westpac everyday account in the same name."

Also would prefer to not deal with the monthly deposit for the Choice transaction account. Anyone have a better suggestion?

        • +2

re choice account I just transferred money in and instantly transferred it back using payid I think.
Once I had the credit card I cancelled the choice account.

  • +2

I know it says $15,000 minimum limit, but it just conditionally approved for $13,000.

  • For me I just had an open westpac trading account so should qualify.

  • 75k income. I’m out

  • Is there any detailed guide on how multiple cards opening affects your credit score, what is safe/unsafe to do, when the score goes back to normal etc. I'm planning to close ANZ and open Westpac one straight away, and I'm confused on how it all works with the score. Also, should I even care? Barefoot says banks don't really care about your score when they give you a loan, as long as you aren't on the bottom of the score ladder. Please advise!

    • I'd be curious about this also. Pre-2019 I was running 2x 15k credit cards and still got an additional 6k travellers CC. Now I am getting denied credit yet I have a higher income by $20k a year. No defaults. Always paying off debts before due etc. And no red flags on credit check. No idea.

      • I was the same and after I found out some banks would only approve you a credit card if you have a lot of debt that's when I started increasing my expenses and have found I have been approved a lot more. YMMV.

      • Maybe this

      • Same situation as you, first time got rejected for ANZ Black.

The reason is here - https://propertyupdate.com.au/new-rules-will-make-it-harder-…

It's stupid because I'm not gonna max my card anyway. Royal commission found that people are stupid and the banks will exploit stupid people, so the government put in checks to stop the bank exploiting people as a result, its harder to churn.

    • I got rejected from a residential gas account due to my credit being too low. Never paid a cent of interest on any of my cards. Just a heap of applications on my credit report. Half of those due to moving house frequently in the past little while.

Hard to judge exact impact but it will affect your score. Best to sign up to those credit score websites to keep tabs on it.

    • Should give it at least 1 month from closing the old account prior to applying the new card.

Anyway, every-time you apply for a new credit card application, (approved or rejected), it will reduce your credit score.

The credit card companies will see all credit cards you applied for, for at least 5-7 years (I don't remember how many years).

    • I applied for 2 new cards late last year to get bonus points, then I refinanced my home loan in Feb. My score went up slightly over that time from 826 to 846. Since then I cancelled the 2 new cards and applied for this card, and my score dropped to 825. All the while, I still hold 3 other cards. All cards always paid off in full.

  • +1

I just closed my 15k anz card and opened a new 15k nab card. And have a high limit amex card I've held onto for a while now. I checked my credit score and it actually went up this month. Have done this consistently the past 3 years and the score only seems to go up.

    • Do you wait for an old credit card account to disappear from your credit score account before you apply for a new one? Or simply get a confirmation from the old bank and apply to the new one straight after?

    • Make sure you're monitoring with all the credit providers as they can vary quite significantly

    • How do you check your credit every month?

  • Can I get this if I don't have a job?

    • +5

Yes….but you have to show $75k in revenue from selling crack.

      • +5

What if they’re on Centrelink with 7 kids?

        • hahahaha

        • I deeply regret having so many kids!

  • Just got approved for 10K. The income limit isn't so strict.

    • -1

Wait what? Isn't the minimum $15k?

      • You need to apply for 15K, they can approve you for less..

        • Are you sure you getting the black? I remember on past deals (can’t remember which bank) people being denied the top tier card and being approved for a lesser card which didn’t include the QFF points.unless things have changed when I had the black previously you couldn’t set the limit below $15k even after approval.

          • @Slo20: Definitely got the black mate. Just giving hope to those who have lower than threshold income.

    • what did you put down?

      • Just put in honest information and see if you make it through.

  • I had a Westpac Altitude Qantas Platinum card in 2018 (which I cancelled that year) so I was able to log in to my account for that to apply for this card. Does that count as an existing account, and hence waive the $250 fee (so it's just $50 instead)?

    • sorry, am confused as well, does this mean that if I still have an existing Westpac Altitude Platinum card, I am NOT eligible for this promo?

      • +1

I would think you are not eligible if you have a card currently

      • It's saying right there in the T&C:

Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

As far as I know, Citibank is (was) the only bank I know allowed you to apply for same card that you just closed less than 12 months (source: I was able apply successfully the Signature card 2nd time in a year after closed the 1st one few months earlier).

    • yeah i stlll have a westpac login from 16 mths ago from the last Westpac promo i signed up for, but no current open accounts.
Wonder if thats 'a customer' or i need to open an everyday account, cycle 2k in/out to avoid the monthly fee

      • As long you still login to WP, you can go apply from there. I was in same situation late last year (customer of WP but had no active account and able signup the last deal).

        • +1

i can see how to apply for the card, but it doesnt have the text indicating first year free..

          Annual card fee: $250
Annual rewards program fee: $0 if you choose Altitude Rewards; $50 if you choose Altitude Qantas
          Variable purchase rate: 20.49% p.a.
Variable cash advance rate: 21.49% p.a.
Interest free days on purchases: Up to 45
          Minimum credit limit: $15,000
          Minimum income required: $75,000

looks like its needing an account existing, not just a login

      • I used the same logon on the card that i closed in 2018.
Got the approval yesterday and it includes the 1st year fee free on the Financial schedule ….
        So seems it works….

    • I think you are in the same boat as me. I had the same Westpac card from the promo then and cancelled after I got the points.
I applied this card today and got approved. Better call to Westpac to find out your log in info.

    • I cancelled my Westpac card over 12 months ago (got the cancellation letter), yet still get monthly SMS reminders to pay my card. Still can login, zero payable. My other half did the same, except still receives $0 monthly statements via the post.

So also wondering if we can apply for this now? Doing a bathroom renovation and my ANZ platinum spend is done.

That being said, accumulated 350k velocity points..only managed to get one $100 gift card off :(

      • Cancelling your credit card is different from closing the credit card account. According to Westpac website:

When you cancel your credit card, your plastic card will cease functioning but your
credit card account will remain active. Depending on the circumstances, you may be
        issued with another credit card.

With your credit card account still active, don't know if you are qualified for the bonus points or not???

  • +1

Who could spend $4000 at the moment? I'm spending nothing, because I'm doing nothing.

    • +3

Load up on Coles/Woolies discounted gift cards…

    • Not a bad place to be if the majority of your expenditure is discretionary spending. However that would be different for most adults.

  • Is there a way to check accrued Qantas points? I could do this with my ANZ black card, and it helped me keep track of eligible purchases and meeting the spending criteria for bonus points.

    • The monthly statement should showing the amount of points you get in that month.

      • But does it show the points for each transaction? It’s a pain when it doesn’t and you then have to try and work out which transactions didn’t accrue points.

        • I don't think any of the banks show the breakdown of how points were accrued (honestly cannot remember if Amex was the exception - they're very quick to add points though). It's just "you earned xyz points this statement", so you have to work backwards from that. Usually if I do statement closing balance x points / dollar earn rate, and round down to nearest while point, it's an exact match. Ie everything gets points, even a few transactions that possibly shouldn't. But I never pay the ATO on credit card, and have lots of smaller genuine transactions, and would always make the spend even if a few transactions were excluded, so it's never worth the bank's bother of quibbling over a handful of points.

          • +1

@nickj: ANZ did offer this with their black card. It was great!

  • +1

Will it count towards the $4000 if i use the credit card to pay rent via deft payment system? Thanks.

    • +1

Potentially, but isn't there a fee on the deft system?

According to my real estate the deft fee on visa / mastercard is 1.5%.

Probably worth it if you're struggling to get to the $4,000 but woolies gift cards would be a better option if that counts towards the spend.

  • Any deals for us low flyers ie platinum card?

  • Imagine if banks bought property and leased it to the public, them sold it to the government after a certain set years to open the market (where mortgages do not exist, and after paying your rent on time to the bank, they allow you to buy it once you have consistently paid the rent, they'll subtract a fee off the cost of the property (like layby) and of you choose not to live in it you can pay what you owed and they'll sell it off to the government, to aid those unable to live.

    • Christian version of Sharia finance.

      • Ahh didn't think of it like thatm

  • +1

If you're interested in this dont hold off and apply now, they did this similar offer last month and shut down in a matter of days for some reason.
    See previous post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/527832

I was cursing and went with a diff bank instead, got approved with them… and NOW they bring it back mehhhh

    • +1

Looks like they shut that down so they could redesign it to exclude the Velocity points option.

  • Good deals!

  • Anyone else got an ANZ travel rewards card? Paid $225 annual fee and never got to use the flight credit (flight was booked, then cancelled by virgin). Points may be useless. So paid $225 and didn't really get anything for it. If velocity disappears do you think I could get my $225 back as I didn't get what's presented on the letter of offer?

    • If ANZ gave you both the flight credit and points, then it's virgin who hasn't honoured these. ANZ may refund a fee as goodwill, maybe, but they would be under no obligation to as they provided what they "presented" in your letter of offer.

      • The flight/ credit is held by ANZ. Like a flight booked with a travel agent You are unable to cancel the flight/ hold the credit yourself (apparently). So it's currently in ANZ's 'hands'. I also haven't transferred points out. Glad to hear some have got their fee back. A little piece of RNA, so much impact.

    • +1

I had the card and just 2 weeks ago called up and cancelled it and asked for the fee back since i didnt use the flight, they did it no problems ($225 back into my cba account yesterday). My fee came out in Jan this year.

      • Can I please ask if this is after you had received the Velocity points as well?

        • +1

          After.

I had the card for a couple of years.

  • For lounge passes youust do this..

    Qantas Club Complimentary Invitations
If you choose Altitude Qantas, you are eligible for 2 Complimentary Invitations per year after you spend on eligible selected Qantas products and services each year using your Altitude Black Mastercard. You must first register and opt in to take advantage of this feature.

  • Opened ANZ FF Black in February, got my 120k points on Friday. Going to open a bank account with Westpac so i'm an "existing customer" & try my luck applying for this offer.

    • +1

Opened & verified bank account within 4 minutes online.
