any AMEX issued card holders ineligible!!

    • +1

      That’s a killer.

    • +1

      Pretty standard…

plus: NO BARGAIN - this is the same deal as referral, only the referee misses out (so effectively a worse deal). Pay it forward - use an AMEX referral:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/americanexpress.com

      • +1

        Wrong.

Current sign up bonus offer through the referral link is 65K points.

Click through and see for yourself.

This is the only way to get 100K points at the moment.

        • Thanks for confirming- didn’t realise it had changed. Mods will need to update

  • Probably a noob question, since this is AmEx does it mean I can use benefits of Amex Statements credits?

  • +1

If only that $450 travel credit was a straight Qantas voucher. The fact that you need to use the credit though the AMEX website Qantas portal kills the deal for me.

    • +5

unless you're looking to spend it on stuff in the "qantas store" which is a waste of money (and points) i dont see the issue, the flight availability on the amex portal is the same as the qantas site?

      • +2

Thanks for that, the Qantas site shows the price for each leg, AMEX site just shows the total flight price up front.

This is actually not a bad deal then.

    • +2

Why ? I've been able to get the same QF prices on the Amex portal

    • Amex travel site never has sale fares so it is always so expensive and generally cheaper to buy elsewhere. I only would use it to get rid of the voucher

      • +2

This isn't true. We booked a trip to Darwin with our vouchers during a Qantas sale, and it definitely showed up on the Amex site.

  • Eligibility criteria for bonus points for existing American Express Card Members

American Express are quite specific about whether existing Card Members will be eligible for bonus points if they apply for a card, are approved, and meet the minimum spend criteria.

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

American Express don’t allow existing Card Members, even for different types of American Express cards (e.g. Charge, Credit or Business) to be eligible for bonus points offers for cards in a different family.

    • Does that mean if someone is not primary account holder but as family member have additional card issued, they are ineligible for bonus points if they apply as primary applicant? Thanks.

      • No.

        • Sorry, no as in they are not eligible for bonus points?

          • @manish87: No. They will get the points as supplementary cards do not count.

  • Can you use the $450 credit with the 100,000 points at the same time?

    • Nope coz u got to buy from Amex website

      • True but you can subsequently use the points to apply for upgrades. Noting that the likelihood of getting an upgrade on international flights is slim if you're a bronze FF.

I used part of my bonus points for an upgrade on a domestic flight which i booked with my travel credit. Approved instantly. Best to book on flights flown by the A330's due to 1-2-1 configured flat bed seats.

  • Do Qantas points expire?

    • If u don't add any new points to you account in 18 months they expire

  • +1

Only problem with the Qantas travel credit is you can't stack it with Qantas gift vouchers, which is a handy way of getting more out of double status credit offers.

Glad to see this offer again though.

  • +1

Worth noting that to use the Qantas lounge passes, you need to have paid for a flight with the AMEX card and it excludes paying taxes/fees on a reward booking. So you can't use points to book a flight, pay for the taxes/fees with this card, and then use the lounge passes. Lame. It also takes ~2 weeks to get sent the lounge passes.
AMEX lounge is much more useable.

You can actually just purchase a carbon emission credit for $1 from Qantas with the card and that will activate the Qantas vouchers. They get added electronically to your Qantas account.

      • Nice!

      • Literally just did this with my Westpac Black MasterCard. $1.04 and they were in my portal account within the week.
Had to make Qantas purchases to get lounge passes.

        • How can I purchase carbon emission credit? I search around but cannot find any way. Does it need to be added with a Qantas flight? Thanks.

        • Just gave this a crack. What portal account? QFF or Amex?

      • How do you purchase qantas carbon emission credit?

      • Thanks for the tip :)

      • Does it have to be more than $1 as I am seeing one for $0.97 when I select Melbourne to Sydney One Way.

        • Maybe. I haven’t received my lounge invites yet for my $0.97 payment on 24/6. Tempted to do it again for >$1.

          • @muncan: Seems to be the case. I made a second payment of $1.59 on 13/7, lounge invites received on 17/7 and confirmation email of lounge passes for Qantas spend received on 18/7.

    • What about gift vouchers?

    • +1

Bought some carbon emission credits just over a week ago and can confirm that this morning I got an email from QFF stating that 2 Qantas lounge passes had been added to my account courtesy of my Amex card. So it definitely works.

      • Nice one, thanks!

  • +2

@Tock - Not sure about this. Just booked two reward seats 10 days ago to Taiwan with China Airlines and paid for fees and charges with this Amex card. I received 2 lounge passes yesterday.

    • Yeah I thought so as credit card companies can’t distinguish between flights, taxes, giftcards, etc.

    • Just make sure that the flight is departing from an Australian port otherwise the transaction will go through one of Qantas's international payment portal. I purchased a reward flight from HKG to LHR and didn't receive my lounge passes, enquired with AMEX and they said its due to it going through the Qantas Hong Kong website

  • I can't see any minimum income requirements there. Is there any?

  • Does anyone know if I can use my $450 voucher on a flight, then use my bonus 100k points to then upgrade my economy seat to business class?

    • Yes

      • Sweet thanks

        • +2

Note upgrades on international flights are not automatic. They are determined by Qantas FF status.

          • @vetopower: sorry I don't understand as I'm new to the whole point things

            I have a $450 voucher I haven't used yet and 150k qantas points.

Example of what I want to know is I book an economy flight just say from Sydney to LA through the Amex portal and use my $450 voucher (pay whatever the remainder of the flight is and fees). Once that is booked I log in with my frequent flyers on the Qantas site and use my points to upgrade the flight from economy to business class

            • +1

@sauce2k6: I think vetopower implied you could try but your success is very much depending on your status: as a Bronze member you will be considered for upgrade after P1, Plat, Gold and Silver members have their pecking order.

              • +2

                @z28:

Once that is booked I log in with my frequent flyers on the Qantas site and use my points to upgrade the flight from economy to business class

As a presumably Bronze member, your chance of getting a points upgrade from economy to business on Sydney-Los Angeles, one of the most popular routes, is almost 0.

If you want to maximise your chances, fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday in low season.

Remember you also have to buy a Saver fare (more expensive than a Sale fare) to submit a request to upgrade.

Personally, I wouldn't bother buying an upgradeable fare for such a slim chance of success.

                • @vetopower: Classic flight rewards economy to business class for Sydney to LA is 100k which I am happy to use if I was guaranteed the upgrade I guess lol.

So even though I have all my points ready to go, I'll still have to wait to see if people with a higher status choose to upgrade their flight first? Would you know how long roughly I have to wait after I request the upgrade before it gets approved/decline?

                  • @sauce2k6: If you submit a flight upgrade request, you, as a Bronze member, will find out sometime between 0 and 24 hours before your flight.

Here's an article explaining how it works in detail: https://www.pointhacks.com.au/how-do-qantas-upgrades-using-p…

                    The important parts:

If you put in an upgrade request for an international flight, you will automatically be put on the Wait List. Once you are on the Wait List, particular rules will determine who is given priority for upgrades. These rules are covered below.

                    Then:

For all international flights and for domestic requests that cannot be approved immediately, the following priority rules will be applied when distributing upgrades.

                    1. Status
Status is the most important factor. Regardless of when Platinum members put in their requests, all Platinum requests will always be approved ahead of all Gold members. Similarly, all Gold members will be approved ahead of Silver members, and so on.

So, Platinum One > Platinum > Gold > Silver > Bronze.

  • Has anyone bought a fully refundable ticket, had the points credited and then had the fare refunded?

    • +5

      Asking for a friend!

  • I got this card on the same offer earlier this year and I love it!

Have a question though is there any product even closely comparable to this, in terms of value in comparison to the annual fee, in the Visa/Mastercard range?

  • I got offered this card as an upgrade to my Qantas AMEX Discovery with the bonus. Declined as I recall you can only use the travel credit on flights and/or flights+hotel not hotel or other travel payments separably.

    • Did you call them regarding something like cancelling and was offered or was this a cold call?

      • Got sent a letter in the post.

  • Got very quick approval.. literally in 10 mins. Applied for similar card( explorer with AmEx member points) from point hacks referral. Is there a way to make sure they considered referral points. From their site, they have just 50K points.

  • Hi guys, Do you think paying uni fees is an eligible purchase?

  • Can I ask How often do people flip cards? Is once a year safe from a credit rating perspective (for future mortgages etc)?

My background is pretty ordinary, stable career, decent income, have a mortgage. Any advice regarding the sweet spot in terms of cycling cards would be much appreciated!

    • I have a stable career, decent income and a mortgage. I don't think I will need to borrow (big) money in the future. I burn and churn 2 or 3 times a year (every six to 9 months) and as a result fly business class often.

  • Is it possible to check whether I'm eligible (18 months rule) before actually applying. I have been burnt on this, Application was approved but not eligible for bonus points due to holding an Amex card about 1 week shy of 18 mths.

    • +1

      Call Amex. They'll tell you.

  • With the Travel Credit can you use this for someone else? Eg. can I book a flight for my wife? Thanks

    • +1

You can buy it for your neighbour, if that's what you want to do.

      • +1

        Hello, it's me, your neighbour

  • +1

How long before you can use the travel credit after approval?

    • Your travel credit will be available in your account after the 1st statement(once the annual fee appears on that).

  • I had the Westpac Amex card less than a year ago. Am I eligible for the bonus points?

    • Not sure what Amex card you have, I had the Westpac Black bundle, applied for this while still holding those Westpac cards and got the bonus points.

      • Cheers.. yeah I got the same Westpac bundle

      • Same. That's a Westpac card. Seperate to this Amex issued card.

        • Even if we had to Westpac AMEX companion card - it is issued by AMEX though? i remember it was carved out last time so i assume it's ok?

      • just looking at the newer version of this offer
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/471886

Regarding your situation - so you ticked the box "currently hold AMEX card", entered the card number for your Westpac, etc - and they approved and provided the bonus points right? Just checking this specifically, as I'm coming from same bank-issued bundle as you, so want to verify!

        Thanks.

  • Do we get same amount of points if we add AmEx to PayPal and use it where it is accepted? Want to buy something from ebay and jbhifi. Both accepts PayPal but not AmEx. Don’t want to miss the points on big ticket items.

    • Yes. I believe so, yes.
It's charged on your card, through the merchant anyhow

    • In hindsight, your probably better off doing a click and collect with PayPal, through JB and Amex.
You'll get the points, plus use Amex without the surcharge, plus free freight returns with PayPal.
I had the same issue in store recently with JB and I should have used the gift vouchers I have, plus the residual bon PayPal/Amex.

      • Trying to get further bargain/price match. So click and collect is not an option. Yeah using gift card is another way. Thanks.

  • +1

Just so that everyone knows, if you apply for additional card (may be for spouse or somebody else ;P) and spend $500 in 3 months on that card, you get extra 5k points. Got this confirmed. Pardon me if this was an old info but just thought to share regardless.

    • Thanks for sharing. How does this work? Didn't see this condition anywhere. I just paid $1200 in bills on my secondary card after receiving it. How do I know if that qualifies for it?

      • I called up the Amex call center to make sure I am getting 100k points and the rep on the phone was amazing and suggested this extra 5k offer. I also got all these notes put on my account so no fuss in future. Better to call them up on 1300 557 743, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm AEST.

        • Thanks for the tip. I'll call them on Monday!

  • If I am successful in applying I would have enough points to fly to Europe business class (2)return next year;I would like to use the $450 in qantas travel credit to pay the taxes,is this doable?Or is there another way around this if not allowed?

    • I would like to use the $450 in qantas travel credit to pay the taxes,is this doable?

      No.

Or is there another way around this if not allowed?

No. The AMEX travel credit can only be used to purchase regular airfares.

The only option would be to purchase one business fare using the travel credit and the other business fare using points.

  • Do we have to use the full amount of travel credit in one transaction? Or can we use it in multiple?

    • One transaction. Any unused travel credit is forfeited.

  • Dumb question: how do I actually sign up? The website has no clear way of progressing to the next part.

    • In my browser (chrome) when i access the page from the link above there is a red box on the left stating find out more and apply. This box stays there even if you scroll down through the point hacks review of the card.

  • I'm a cheapskate who almost never books flights on non-budget airlines unless my employer is paying for it. Can I sell the $450 Qantas credit to somebody else (like on OzB classified?) to offset the yearly fee? If so, what is the usual going rate?

EDIT: Nvm, checked classifieds and got my answer
