Why on earth would you spend so much on pens?
You know where you are? This is OzBargain, right? Blow to the head or something?
My definition of a bargain pen = 10c or less in bulk from Officeworks

      • +4

I think it's a bit like kitchen knives.

A layman like me would only spend $10-20 on a kitchen knife.

A chef or enthusiast would gladly pay $150 for a knife. They both cut things, but the more expensive one might have a better feel and balance, hold its edge better, glides better, etc. That's all irrelevant to me, but I can understand why an enthusiast would be willing to pay extra.

Pens are similar. A 10c pen from OW will draw a line. But it won't have the same ink flow, friction, weighting, and general feel of a fountain pen.

Those pens mentioned above are reaaally expensive though. But hey, people buy Seiko watches instead of $5 kmart digital watches even though both of them do exactly the same thing, don't they? :)

        • -4

          No doubt Eug, but $895.00?
Surely all of your luxury pen needs could be covered for $100.
Must be some kind luxury poser-ism thing.
          Ergo, not OzBargain material.

        • +6

@King Tightarse: Who knows. I'm not a pen person. But I think with niche things like that, you're really paying for the design, labour, and workmanship.

Things that are not mass-produced will cost a lot. Biro started making their ballpoint pens on a small scale in 1944. According to measuringworth.com, one pen would cost the equivalent of £1,062 - £3,734 in 2014 pounds.

OzBargain is mainly about getting good prices for specific things - not finding the cheapest thing that will do a certain task. Otherwise there would be very few deals:

          • all iPhones would not qualify as a deal unless they cost as much as a Moto G.
          • all Moto Gs would not qualify as a deal unless it cost as much as a Lumia 540.
          • If BMW suddenly offered 70% off on all BMWs, it wouldn't qualify as a deal because a Suzuki Alto is cheaper.

It's all about perspective. $895 is a lot for a pen to me, but I will pay $900 for a Galaxy S6. Someone who has absolutely no interest in phones will think $900 for a phone is ridiculous as a $30 Lumia 540 works perfectly fine.

        • -2

          @eug:
Yes, you make some excellent points.
For me the delineation would be quite individual and depend on the motivation of the buyer. If it was a niche a collector's love for their objects then more power to them, but if their motivation was simply to impress others and pose, that would be another matter.
I have seen a bit of posturing and conspicuous-consumption bragging here recently.
          Check this thread:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/207683
Starts with "As a high income earner…" and then ponders how "others" live on less than 60k.
Total poser or alternatively great troll thread.

        • @King Tightarse: some people like to brag about their wealth, so comes the saying 'gold bullet will penetrate any wall'. they think money can make them do anything. it happens in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and soon will come to usa and australia.

      • +2

Because collecting limited edition hand made pens is one of my hobbies. A bargain is no less a bargain because it doesn't meet YOUR requirements. You want to open up a debate based on personal value judgements? Sure. Bring it on.

        • -2

If its hobby, I get that.
But you shouldnt be too surprised if you get comments about spending $1000s on pens. It unusual, especially on bargain site. But hey if you love if for well the love of it, sure. If you love it for the reaction from others, then I would read that differently.

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:

Your point is clear and well-noted.

You choose to make value judgements about other users, rather than focusing on the deals and the effort fellow users put into sharing their discoveries. You also condone this approach by others.

I don't know when you think OzBargain became a cheapskate vs bargain-hunting site but you're playing with fire.

        • -3

          @OzDJ_:
          "you're playing with fire"
          Lol.

how did you get 20% off when it isn't shown on the supported stores. Sorry did i miss something? Was this code applying to all of ebay in the start?

      • Peter's of Kensington was always one of the participanting retailers for this eBay promo.

    • The Pelikans are also dirt cheap… must resist the M1000…. $500 is still a lot for a pen I don't need.

      • Looks like they've sold their M1000 stock. That was a bloody good buy! Easily the cheapest anywhere in the world. Will cross fingers and hope there's a similar deal in the future.

  • Does anyone know if I can still claim the Fujitsu cash back for AC when buying through ebay?

    • Hmm, I'm not too sure why, maybe someone can chime in soon.

On an unrelated note, if you don't mind sharing, what are you purchasing on Supps R US that you reckon is a good deal? I had a brief look at their store, and couldn't find any.

      • +4

well, considering the 20% off plus cashback anything can be a good deal if you really need any. I was looking for some pre/intra workout stuffs plus was thinken to stack up some proteins.

People having mixed results, but most require at least the name to match.

    • I couldn't find much info in the thread given by aXit, but 4 months ago I bought ink from them via eBay. I found the email that was sent to me, telling me that my order was ready to pick up. It says the following :

The products you've purchased have been reserved and are now ready for you to pick up.
Please ensure you bring this email as well as a current Australian Drivers Licence or Australian Passport in order to collect your items.
Thank you for shopping with The Good Guys.

So take that as you will. Whether they will except your wife's name instead or not, I have no idea. :)

      • +1

        Thanks folks.
In the end my wife did pick it up.
The store called me to say it was ready (and emailed), I asked about my wife and they said just reply to the email and say your wife will pick up, name is xxx.
Did that and all was fine.

Ted's…what a disappointment. Why do they participate in this sale?

    • +9

Yep. I was checking last night and there were plenty of lenses. All taken away this morning. Why do they even remove all their stuff? Isn't eBay absorbing the fees? Aren't they just losing potential sales?

    • their last item sold was at 11:38, i guess that is when they pulled (out of stock) most of the items. They sold 110 items today, pretty low stock for a sale like this.

      • how can you check that ?

    • Not cheap and I'm unsure of price range/starting point, but Honda movers tend to be bullet proof, as my brother keeps telling me and others.
He works at a mower shop that sells a few major brands (unrelated to any stores in this promo).
So a good investment in the long run.

I'm thinking of this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-VE247H-24-inch-Widescreen-LE…

  • I don't really understand why stores do this. They are losing customers in the long run aswell as missing out on potential sales.

If im not wrong, they get the full amount like they normally would except ebay pays the the discount we receive, correct?

    • +3

I'm not sure if anyone knows for certain. The fact that it's only a selected number of stores makes me think that the stores themselves have to cover part of the discount in exchange for being part of the promotion.

    • +1

It's definitely a mutual negotiation between eBay and the seller. EBay's promotion will bring in profits for both them and the seller. So eBay will say, "our promotion will increase sales by 40%", but you have to opt in. If you want to opt in, you have to pay a fee. If you don't opt in, we have another competitor lined up who will opt in and take your customers from you now and for the next few months until they decide they're back in the market again for a new lens."

So eBay and the seller will split the 20% somehow. Not 10 and 10 I don't think.

      • +1

Do you have any proof of this or are you just heavily speculating?

        • I'm heavily speculating but it sounds like I'm not. The best kind of speculation !

Looks like the Cash Rewards is working for this sale. Just got two emails.

    Retailer: eBay Australia
    Date of Sale: 24/08/2015
    Sale Value: AUD 570.00
    Expected Cashback: AUD 11.40

    Retailer: eBay Australia
    Date of Sale: 24/08/2015
    Sale Value: AUD 1369.00
    Expected Cashback: AUD 27.38

    • Isn't specific to this deal either. I got a few emails with cashback from 2 months ago.

    • I noticed that it's only 2% cashback and not 2.5% as promoted.

      Here's mine.

      Retailer: eBay Australia
      Date of Sale: 24/08/2015
      Sale Value: AUD 1357.00
      Expected Cashback: AUD 27.14

      • It's 2.5% now but was 2% before… question is when did it change? First I saw it mentioned was 25/8, so your purchase was possibly before the change.

        • Looks like you are right. I got both items just after 10:00am so as soon as the eBay promotion was open. I didn't want to risk my items getting sold out. 2% is better than 0% at least :)

        • I purchased at 10:39am.
It was posted at 9:31am yesterday https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208440 and had already changed at that time.
I remember because I looked at the details on their site then too.

        • @unco:
Ok so the earliest mention of the 2.5% rate is around 11pm on 24/8; the rep's other comment is in relation to the 20% discount coupon being eligible for cashrewards cashback, and makes no reference to a change in the cashback rate.

Your purchase was about 12 hours earlier than this first mention. My original comment, that your (and Saiya's) purchase was possibly before the change, is still valid (as a possibility). Best way to confirm one way or another is to ask cashrewards when the 2.5% rate took effect, that way you will know whether your purchases were correctly processed at 2%, or should have been 2.5%.

        • @quop:
Ah sorry I see what you mean now about the other comment, you're right.

I'll shoot them a message and see :) thanks.

Also noticed the email says the date of purchase according to CashRewards was the 24th when I actually purchased on the 25th. Hopefully something on their end that they can fix.
