  • I wonder it works with MacBooks…?

    • +5

Answered my own question with a little bit of Googling… https://www.igorkromin.net/index.php/2015/03/28/dell-ultrash…

    • According to freelife, it works with his 2013 MBA 11". Another website also seems to suggest it works, and also comes with a mini-DP to DP cable which is a bonus!

      • +26

        It's me :)

I've had this monitor for half a year now and yes it works with my MacBook Retina 13". I use the mini DisplayPort cable to DisplayPort on the monitor and it's awesome that it carries both picture and sound. The speakers on this Dell is pretty decent, little bass of course, but the rest of the sound is clear and accurate, and loud! I have it at 35% volume most of the time, and even have to turn down the source volume often (the slider bar on YouTube for example). Then again I live next to a weirdo who I once heard yelling "I just want to bash my head against the wall" when I was playing my music too loud. I think he was referring to my music.

As for the pros and cons of the monitor:

        Pros:
        - Awesome size… As I'm doing my MBA I have tonnes of windows open. Especially when doing my essays I have 3 pages open at once - PDF, website, OneNote… the lack of having to switch windows as in a normal screen is SO handy. I think I would go crazy if I had to keep flipping windows when doing my long essays.

        • Super easy to assemble. It has a position-and-click mechanism to attach the monitor to the stand, something I wish I knew before I unscrewed the backing plate for no reason.

        • The screen at max is BRIGHT! I have it at 40% and my eyes don't get sore.

        • The colour reproduction is accurate and the colours pop. The IPS screen is beautiful with colours and has a super wide viewing angle, almost perfect. The Mac colour profile recognises the Dell monitor so it's a selectable profile which is perfectly calibrated (in my eyes anyway).

        • I can't really comment on the curve of the screen as I have no reference, but if anything the effect would be subtle. I notice the curve especially at the edges - for example the icons look a little 3D as an effect of the edge of the glass and the inward curve… a little novelty.

        • The ability to adjust height and tilt of the monitor is awesome - better than the LG which only allows tilt.

        • The look of the monitor is nice and clean. It's bezel-less when switched off

        • The amount of USB ports is a godsend. I use every single port for all my peripherals like wireless keyboard and mouse, DVD drive (for my practice exams), backup drive, and one connected as an uplink to my Mac so all feed into the Mac with one chord. The side USB input on the back left side is handy for those frequent USB uses.

        • The screen has a semi-matte finish which helps reduce glare but enough sheen to keep screen look polish (not the country)

        • The gradual glowing light like you used to find on old MacBooks is a nice touch to let you know the monitor is asleep.

        • The menu is comprehensive with lots to fiddle with which I often can't be bothered. Works straight out of the box.

        • The packaging of the monitor is robust and pretty big. It makes the whole thing look more expensive than it really is.

        • Every single friend who sees it wants to steal it and can't believe it costs more than my 55" TV.

        • I have never watched anything inappropriate on the screen

        Cons:

        • Flicker! Oh the flicker. It doesn't happen often but when it does, ARGHHHH Reset MacBook or PRAM (Mac term). It's so intermittent I think it starts when there's interference from bluetooth or my backup drives or my physical aura… In other words I don't know! The screen would flicker little to a lot and I have to reset my Mac and it would be fine again for a few days or sometimes weeks. The moment it starts again I say nice curse words cos I don't swear.

        • There is screen bleed. Obvious on a black screen. But it doesn't affect the screen in anyway when something is displayed. Has never bothered me. I guess if you watch movies on the screen frequently with black edges then yeah it might up your nerve but meh, never really bothered me.

        • The menu has an option to turn on BEEPS when you go through the menu. I turned it on but there's no beeps. My monitor is a troll.

        • The "touch" controls are hit and miss sometimes cos you have to place your finger correctly without any tactile feedback. Minor nuisance.

        • No Mac drivers, which is specifically stated on the Dell website. Boo. But then again it works, bar the flickers.

I think that's about it. If you have any more questions let me know. I paid similar price to above during the last 20% off ebay sale.

I wish Apple made a 34" screen, to appease my OCD cos everything on my desk is Apple, even my paper shredder (using the free Apple sticker).

        • +1

I might add… as much as the screen resolution is awesome, you can't compare this with a retina display. When I switch from my Mac to the Dell, the screen difference is obvious. The Dell is "grainier". This is purely pixel technicals, not the quality of the screen. But after a while you adjust and the Dell looks pretty sharp. The smallest texts look great and colours are vibrant. Human eyes adapt very quickly, no alcohol required.

        • Hey freelife I have this screen as well and may have had the same intermittent flickering.

There are loads of faulty displayport cables on the market that haven't been wired correctly. And my understanding is if you had one of these cables they would be feeding power into your macbook via the monitor, causing issues at random times, just as you've described. I believe this was the cause of my flickering until I changed the cable.

Have you tried other cables? It's cray Dell didn't include one, at least not in my box.

I tried 3 cables that worked perfectly fine with other monitors but caused my U3415W to flicker intermittently. I ended up using one that came with a HP monitor and it hasn't flickered once in the 4 months since. Might be worth trying a DisplayPort Certified Cable.

        • +2

Nobody ever mentions the TWO usb3 uplink ports! I want one to connect my desktop PC and my macbook pro at the same time. Plug my keyboard and mouse etc into monitor USB ports. When you switch display inputs, it automatically moves your usb devices onto the other uplink. Fantastic feature no other monitor has yet. Unfortunately I'm looking at quitting my day job soon to start out on my own, so can't justify $1k on a monitor anymore :(

        • @dipster:

I always assumed it was a power leak issue! That's what usually causes speakers to do the intermittent humming (like my smoke alarm speaker which is wired to mains), and yeah flickering screen - makes sense because sometimes flickering stops when I switch screen on and off. Didn't think of the cable. I dumb! Thank you for the suggestion!

    • The LG equivalent (http://www.lg.com/au/it-monitors/lg-34UC97) would be better (if nore expensive) choice for Macbooks because it has thunderbolt ports. This Dell is a great price, though!

      • Besides the price, the lack of height adjustment was a deal breaker. It's actually really useful on the Dell I adjust based on my crouching habits lol

  • I've been looking for an ultra wide 34" 3440 x 1440 but since the Acer x34 is taking so long I might not be able to hold out!

    • +4

Get the DELL, best warranty out there.

      • +3

Their returns for faults was fantastic. So tempted.

  • +1

    As I said here:

    Looks like a great monitor!

    34" 3440x1440 21:9, HDMI 2.0, etc.

    Review at tftcentral is comprehensive:
    http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u3415w.htm

Oh, and it looks like 3440x1440x60 Hz works fine with DisplayPort 1.1a, since it's just under the 8.64 GBps link speed.

Otherwise you'll need HDMI 2.0, or need to drop the frame rate slightly to 50Hz on HDMI 1.3 or HDMI 1.4.

  • +6

Bought. I am a sucker for large monitor. I have to move my current Dell U3011 to my son's PC.

    • +28

      will you be my daddy….

      • LOL

      • +10

No. I already have 2 sons. 2 too many.

    • Damn it, also have a 3011 and have been umming and arring about getting a curved 34" ultrawide.
This makes it even harder to resist!!

  • why is it so cheap compared to other ultrasharp monitors?

    • Because it's Dell. And because there's no fancy materials. All unashamedly plastic.

Edit: I think the base is metal. It feels metal. It's as heavy as metal.

      • +9

you could say it's heavy metal……….

        sorry.

  • bought 1, thanks!

  • Can't justify upgrading from LG-34UM95 to this :(

    • -8

LG have the worst Desktop Monitors

    • I too use a 34UM95 (Rev.2) at home and a U3415 at work. I feel the curved screen is a gimmick and, at times, makes me wonder if a line is really straight when checking CAD drawings. Besides, 34UM95 is practically flicker free and definitely less tiring on eyes after hours of use.

Dell's monitor stand is way way better though. LG's floating-look stand is pretty low (too low for me) and unadjustable. After having a couple of Yellow Pages under my LG for a month, I bought a VESA monitor arm.

It's definitely a sidegrade unless you have to sit really really close to your ultrawide monitor in a small cubicle, in which case, the curvature and the stand would be worth it.

      • I'm loving it as a gaming monitor, so I feel the curve would be a bit better for visuals at the end of the screen.

Also bought an arm for the LG though, horrible stand from factory.

      • +1

The 34UM95 is well known to have the click of death issue. I will stick with Dell.

        • Well-known issue for this monitor? Really? Based on one reviewer and some early [Revision 0] adopters who got the defective lot?

Have heaps of Dells at work. Some 30 inchers were replaced 5 times (4 times with a factory refurb, which was even worse or came with entirely different issues) because of various display/connection issues. Buying high-end Dell monitors can be like a lottery more often than not. Some are great and problem-free out of box while some initial release/early revisions are absolute lemons.

Like cars, you are better off waiting for later revisions. Getting everything right first time is something you don't see often these days.

Hope you get a good unit. Early 3415Ws were prone to easily noticeable backlight bleeds.

  • i am still using my 30$ monitor with triple monitor set up here…

  • +2

Will Dell ever have Freesync/Gsync T_T

  • Can you configure it as two inputs side by side instead of a single screen? I think Windows would behave more predictably this way if you're using for productivity.

    • There's probably a software solution that would achieve the same result.

    • It has built in Picture-in-Picture but it's crap. Everything looks jaggy. I never use it.

      • There are windows drivers for this display that allow a lot of virtual screen layouts.

        • But I'm on a Mac :p

        • @freelife: I know. Thats why I specified how it works on a supported system.

    • +9

Does your laptop have a 34" screen?

  • +1

imagine playing TF2 on this? (drool)

  • +2

What is the appeal of such a ridiculously wide monitor? Most websites now are designed for cellphones and have just a thin colume of text in the middle. All of that width is just wasted. Ditto for reading text documents - height is more important than width. Likewise for playing older games with a fixed 4:3 ratio.

    • +4

Uni students like me doing multiple readings to produce essays without having to constantly swap windows… it's a godsend!

Or sometimes I have a webinar lecture and on one side I have the lecturer and powerpoint slides and the other side I have my OneNote open taking notes or my internet browsing when I'm bored, my lecturer can't see :)

    • I use a 21:9 monitor, good for multitasking (Youtube on one side, work stuff on the other), viewing multiple documents at once (side by side), gaming & cinematic movies. Suffers for oldskool games naturally but its also handy if you can't fit 2 monitors on the desk like other people

Not sure if I'd choose 21:9 again in the future but its nice for something different

    • +1

Video Editing. Being able to run a timeline all the way across a massively wide screen is very appealling. You can't do that with a two monitor setup, because the timeline always defaults to the centre (which is where the bezels of the two monitors would join). That's why I'd be getting one.

For general work, I'd be more inclined to go for a standard 4K monitor.

    • +1

Graphics design and audio editing. Much more efficient to retouch large photos on a larger display; whilst the more screen workspace you have for editing in a digital audio workstation, the easier your life is going to be when chopping things up and moving them around.

    • +1

These are a few use cases that spring to mind where the 3440x1440 21:9 ratio works for me:

      • Programming. Code on one side and reference material or a debugger on the other.
      • Remote desktop. Some other machine on one side and my stuff on the other.
      • Watching 21:9 movies in bed. When the picture fits exactly it's a bit of luxury in the bedroom. Feels cinematic to me. But when it doesn't fit exactly it's nothing special tho. I have it mounted on a monitor arm on a height adjustable desk, so I can position it juuust right when I'm in bed for viewing without neck strain.
      • Net meetings. The meeting on one side and notes or active research on the other.
      • Timelines and charts. E.g. performance stats over time. This is probably the only situation where I maximise a window. You can really enjoy a chart on this screen, especially in a charting app like tableau.

I used to use a 2560x1440 16:9 but always found each side (1280x1440) of a side-by-side scenario too skinny. I.e. scroll bars or wrapping. Whereas 1720x1440 is excellent, it's kinda like 4:3 on each side.

However, when I stagger into the office first thing in the morning it's a relief to sit in front of the 2560x1440 16:9 I have there. I'm typically exhausted from watching movies in bed the night before. And when I'm not in the zone it's somehow comforting having the code physically closer. But once I start slamming down coke n chocolate bars going all leet hax0r, smashing away at the mechanical keyboard, I wish I had the extra screen real estate. Pretending I'm making a difference. Eventually I food coma from the bars and start to wonder what it's all for anyway. Wondering how many weeks it's been since I spent quality time with the family on the weekend. Lost time is never found again. I imagine myself lying in a hospital bed down the track looking cross-eyed at my insides being sucked through a narrow tube coming out my nose. Recalling how I used to laugh about the small turnout there'd be at my funeral. And how just.. unfunny the reality of it is now. Did I invest my time in the right places. What I wouldn't give….

  • +4

I had one of these but returned it in the end; my thoughts
    - Beautiful design, physically stunning.
    - The "Side by side" (Picture by picture) mode is basically useless. To switch the keyboard and mouse between each computer you press a button on the monitor (which is about a 10 second delay) and it manually switches them over. I thought it would work as some kind of KVM but no. You could use Synergy to get around this but my plan was to use my work laptop and desktop PC side by side.
    - FPS Games suffer from a lot of tearing - this is where the display wasn't so great. Playing MOBA's wasn't too bad but you have to get used to looking around at such far distances.
    - Websites suffered from wasted space.

I ended up settling on a Samsung 28" 4K - a nicer choice in the end.

  • Thought about this monitor for ages since it came out but with no VA/Gsync/Freesync & a lowish resolution its not a massive upgrade from my 29" 2560x1080 Ultrawide Dell :/ Only the 34" & curved screen features gets my attention

  • I just bought one of these. Hoping that it comes in quickly. Anyone know if you need to purchase extra cables?

    • +1

      From PCmag:

Included in the box are a mini-DisplayPort cable, an HDMI cable, and an upstream USB cable. You also get a printed Quick Start Guide and a CD containing a User Guide, drivers, and Dell's Display Manager software, which allows you to change picture presets using a mouse and keyboard and apply presets to specific applications. It also contains an Easy Arrange utility that lets you use predefined or custom window layouts.

Unfortunately the website says 4-5 week delivery time.

  • Itching to upgrade from a U2711.

I mainly watch movies and play games. I don't really do much work at home.

Yay or nay to this monitor?

    • I have 2 of the U2711 that I use for photo editing.
Wouldn't mind one of these. Anyone using one for photo editing?
Also I noticed there's no dvi which is what I use now. My video card is an nvidia 275 have been looking at the 970. That should run it fine with HDMI.

      • +1

I use a U3415 as my primary monitor with 2x U2711s beside it for videowork. Excellent screen with fantastic colour accuracy like the rest of the U lineup - and the extra real estate space makes it all the more better; you can fit everything on the screen and actually be able to see it.

    • Be aware that whilst 21:9 is good for movies neither Netflix nor Stan supports 21:9 monitors so theatrical ratio movies normally have black borders on all sides unless you use a Netflix browser addon that zooms in but then you need to disable the addon everytime you go back to either 16:9 or 4:3

Its an IPS screen so it'll have good colours but it lacks the inky blacks of a VA monitor & the refresh rate doesn't support freesync or gsync for gaming

It'll be good for movies/games with the added curved screen for immersion but it won't blow you away

      • Sounds like the screen is good but is basically limited by the availability of content for 21:9 ratio….

        • Yup, pretty much! Also then you need a good graphics card that can go slightly above your usual 1080p for gaming or play with black borders. Sometimes games of today only support console-like 16:9 resolutions adding further annoyance

        • no, not the content, but certain content delivery systems. the content itself (movies) are in/close to that ratio, and will be fine if you are playing back from blu-ray/dvd/video files/other services. but certain services (ie. netflix/stan) will not display that content correctly (without using other tricks, as mentioned, to get them to display properly).

(also, this is assuming watching movies is the only criteria for this monitor…ie. forgetting general productivity use, 21:9 gaming, etc. 21:9 monitors are good for multiple things!)

    • Also worth noting that when you use it for video games your PC will have to push 1.3x more pixels than it currently does on the U2711 (and for those who game at 1080p, 2.4x pixels) - so if your video card struggles with 1440p it'll be even worse with this.

But then, if you're looking at a $1000 monitor perhaps you have video card(s) to match!

There's a lot going on with gaming monitors at the moment - 4K+ resolutions, 144Hz refresh rates, G-Sync/Free Sync (which adjust refresh rates on the monitor in line with what your video card can do). IMO, while this is a great monitor I would probably wait another year or two and see how the market shakes out - your current monitor is still great and you might find yourself disappointed in what you missed out on.

      • I have a gtx970… should be sufficient?

        • Check the last paragraph I edited in to my last comment - but yeah the GTX970 will be fine - just expect the performance drop so if you're the type who needs a rock solid 60FPS to play or likes only the highest settings that the additional resolution will take a toll on your frame rate.

  • +2

Omg I hate you, bought one <3

  • I want someone to make a monitor: 34"-37", curved, 21:10, 120hz+, freesync, 1-2ms response.

    • Almost what I'm looking for but replace freesync with gsync. Either way no monitor meeting those requirements :( Also HAS to be a IPS/VA panel, TNs should be extinct by now

      • Doesn't acer or asus have something like that coming out?

        • The closest thing is the Acer XR341CK(freesync) and Acer XR341CKA(gsync).

          They are 34", curved, 21:9, 75hz(freesync), 100hz(gsync), 4ms response, IPS.

So we are not quite there yet in terms of refresh rate and response rate.

I think it is probably best to wait until some OLED monitors come out anyway, IPS doesn't really have the contrast required to be fully immersive.

  • +1

    i had a u3011 but went a 4K 40" Philips monitor. Wont look back.

    • My roommate's got that (and the PC to handle 4K too), pretty good though slightly too big imo and lacks any sort of adjustments (height/swivel). Colours look good & inky blacks, great for gaming

  • Hi starwarsfreak,

Is the Philips 4k good at displaying 1080p or 1440p? As I don't think my gtx 970 can handle 4k at 60fps. How are games like CSGO and LoL on the 40 " screen? Is it way too big? Also windows desktop and browsing is it out of proportion??

    • hey kennis, its 3840 x 2160 @ 60hz and watching videos, surfing internet is great although i have to enlarge the icons as its way too small at the 4k resolution … everytime i turn it on its just an eye opener, i cant even turn brightness above 50% as its too clear and crisp.

ive played FPS games and its pretty cool, though my card struggles abit, i have to sit back due to its immense size, i only run it on a gtx780ti and looking to upgrade to a gtx980ti once i can afford too.

but i absolutely love this monitor.. my friends come over and its like.. ' holy shit ' lolz.

Prior to this monitor i was looking at 21:9 screens but opted for the size instead..

you get used to the windows desktop but yea it is huge, i do however find it easy opening quite a few things and not having to sacrifice desktop space to view it all..

  • Thanks for the info. How far back do you need to sit to see the whole screen?

The way my computer desk is design might be a issue if I need to sit a fair way back….

I can only sit max 2 feet back from the screen measuring from the eyes:)

    So is the 40" too big? I was thinking to get a dell 27" 1440P monitor. I have a 24" Dell now @ 1200P.

The philips is a VA panel, will I lose clarity compared to IPS panel as my Dell is an IPS…

    • My roommate sits about 60cm away from his 40" monitor (so 2ft) and he's pretty used to it now - he had a 27" 1440p before. Like any big screen it'll take you a few days to adjust and you'll need to increase your mouse's DPI to compensate

You'll probably lose some colours on the VA panel compared to IPS but otherwise its fine

    • edit: NVM

  • ok thanks for the info.

  • Just purchased one myself now. Already have 2 Dell 27 inch so will put this in the middle of the two as they are all the same height.

    • +1

That is going to be an epic setup!

    • I'll have the same setup. I was hoping the height will be the same.

      • I took a measurement of my monitors and based on the measurement provided of the 34" widescreen they are very close if a couple mm out. Apparently its due at about the 2nd September so I should find out soon.

  • Anyone know if it's possible extend this warranty up to 5 years? I assume it comes with 3 years warranty originally? Also, is it international warranty?

    • Good question. I wonder if you can extend the warranty after you have bought it?

  • I have received delivery noticed yesterday. I am hopeful that it will arrived before the weekend.

  • Just checked mine and looks like its moved to:

In my itemized list it has Dell UltraSharp UZ2315H 23" Monitor with Webcam as well as the 34" Monitor. Hopefully they have not mistaken this and send me the 23" monitor instead of the 34". Bonus if they sent me both, LOL.

    • Did you end up getting the 23" monitor too?

  • +2

Bought this monitor last time they had 20% off sale and I have had absolutely no regrets. One of the best things I've ever bought in my life! If I wasn't broke I'd honestly consider getting another one.

    • Thanks for that idea of two of them that you have placed in my head. I was happy with the single 34 inch and two 27 inches either side but now I wonder if two of these monitors would be better. I hate you! lol

      • I'm sorry to say, but this is coming from someone who already has two 24" monitors either side this one. You could always buy two and mount them on top of each other as your primary for a 4 monitor setup? Think of all the extra screen real-estate!

  • Looks like mine is now shipped. Estimated Delivery Date: 3/09/2015 so looks like it was pushed back a little. Can't wait till I get it!

Display Type: Widescreen Flat Panel Display
has a super wide viewing angle
      ….been looking for an ultra wide 34" 3440 x 1440

      you don't say! :)

    • What's your opinion so far coming from the U3011 if you have had a chance to use it?

It is about 1.5x wider but 1/5 shorter. It suite me better than the U3011. I like it a lot and there is definitely a wow factor :). I mainly use my monitor for Excel work, ozbargain, and photoediting.
