Woah.. imagine playing counter-strike on this, you'd be able to see behind you! :P

Impeccable timing. Was about to buy one. Saved $271.80 plus extra 2% cashrewards.

For those looking to buy a curved 34", there's basically 3 in the market currently for sale - Dell, LG and Samsung.

None of them are perfect, but here is how I eliminated my choices:

    • LG has serious LED bleed (more than Dell) and the monitor is not height adjustable
    • Samsung has great contrast but colours are not accurate at angles due to technology used (VA panels), also texts aren't as sharp
    • Dell has overall good colour and text sharpness, it swivels, tilts and height adjustable, plus they have a one bright pixel = full monitor replacement warranty, and they send one out straight away, not wait for you to return yours first, all postage free - and for 3 years. So peace of mind there. Dell also has super thin bezels when off. A 1cm margin does appear when switched on though.

For those who can wait, Acer and HP are releasing their own soon. No dates yet. HP takes up more physical real estate it has speakers either side of the monitor, and relatively thick too. But it looks nice. Acer appears to have really good specs, but I can't wait anymore.

    Cheers.

"Dell also has super thin bezels when off. A 1cm margin does appear when switched on though." OK so they have a digital bezel now?

      • +1

        Edge-to-edge front glass.

        Stylish looking, but really same-same.

    • I've read the dell has pretty bad back light bleed.

      • It's a side effect of IPS screens so regardless of manufacturer, bleeds will exist. The news for Dell here is that LG's bleed is much worse, and based on reviews, Dell's bleed is tolerable, especially if used in normal room lighting where it cannot be seen. If you want to use this as a cinema screen, then it might bother you. I plan on using it as my normal everyday screen, not for games or movies, as I have a 55" TV for that.

I can post review when I receive the unit next week. But overall reviews on the web rates Dell as having best overall quality and value for what's out in the market right now. Plus they have excellent warranty - one dead pixel and they replace your whole screen immediately.

    • Still using the 30" Dell IPS monitor i got 7 years ago for $1400. Worth every cent. I got a Yamakasi Spartan 30" recently to go dual monitor setup. Still use my Dell as main.

  • I'm torn between this and waiting for the Acer Predator XR341CK. My Dell 3007 has had a good innings but it's time for something new.

    • Apparently it's being mass produced in Q2 this year, so release will be mid to late this year. And I reckon premium price. Looks awesome though.

      • Yeah, I know it will be a step up in $$$ but on paper it ticks all the boxes without compromise.

    • Same boat… not sure if i should wait or not.

  • +2

Oh damn, this is very tempting to replace the aging 2407's. Testament to dell's build quality, those are 9 years old and still great, just wanting more…

    • I still have the 2405 mate, while pic quality is not the best it's still runs well.

      • +1

I have 2 x 2407's, I was keen but missed out on the 2405 group buys (if that's how you got yours?)

Unfortunately, as you know they weren't cheap back then, one was near $1000, the other was I think $700ish, which meant I bought one a year later and the brightness/contrast/colour has never been a perfect match. I always wanted a triple setup but that'd mean buying 3 together to avoid this happening again and when you price that, I'd rather spend a little more and get one of these instead.

Just don't think my wife will see the merit in the idea…

        • ahah wow how popular was that group buy? thats how i got mine…

  • Would be nice but my main laptop could not pump out this resolution. Looks top heavy on that small stand though.

  • I've already got a U3415w, running with my U2410 and Samsung TV. it is awesome!

    • Can you comment on the bleed issue as that's the biggest concern for buyers. Thnx.

    • Also a photo would be nice seeing that all running. I wondered if I'd still have a use for either of my 2407's after buying such a monitor so I'm interested in seeing what you've done.

  • Do you think we will see those screen around or below $1,000 again before the end of the year?

    • Yes, the story of technology. Each month passing improves the products of yesterday, so by year's end there'll be new products that kick these current ones off the shelf.

      • Don't see Dell releasing another version this year (Dell is my preference). Price seems pretty locked across all brands to $1200-1300 as an exclusive niche product. Don't think it will drop much with next models especially if exchange rate drops.

  • is curved a good thing?

    • +8

      Real monitors have curves.

    • Our eyes are curved. That's the biggest point these curved monitors makers are spruiking. And it's factual.

      • +1

Doesn't affect your FOV of a flat screen. I have no problem looking at mega sized flat screens. To go curved would limit your viewing position, which is even worse for a TV.

  • How well does the single keyboard and mouse functionality between PC's work?

  • So tempting! I've had my eye on the LG for a while, but this Dell is only a bit over half the regular price of the LG. Good deal!

    • +1

I got the LG from MSY on the weekend - $1169.00 FYI. So they are getting cheaper! Bummer for me on Saturday DELL didn't have this in its eBay store and MSY had 10% off - So I jumped, LED Bleed isn't bad, its there but its minimal - So I guess that's luck of the draw.

    • It's also important to factor in post-sales and customer service in your price comparison. Dell has superior customer service, warranty and refund options. You can return the Dell simply with change of mind (no defects) within 15 days. LG does not allow this. LG also has poor customer service, I used to have an LG laptop. For a $1K+ piece of tech which needs the safeguard of quality warranty, I'd consider that in the decision.

  • This screen takes wide to the HNL.

  • So with these curved 34" screens, between VA and IPS, which is better for input lag and ghosting? Do they get anywhere close to TN panels?

  • I do a bit of gaming, so that's the only reason why I don't buy these curved displays. This monitor has an 8 ms response time! I can't bare to go from a BENQ 144 Hz, 1 ms response time monitor to one of these.

  • Damn really tempting but I feel like my crappy old HD6870 is already about to blow up.

  • +1

I'm so tempted. I'm trying desperately to discourage myself from spending so much money, but it's not working well….

  • -1

Never understood the appeal of curved screens. What do you get that you don't get from a flat screen?

    • +2

On a flat screen in a format this wide you'll get slight distortion of images at the far edges because of how close you are to the screen. The curve bends the edges to the natural curvature of your perspective. The curve of a lens, whether your eyes or a camera lens, is basic physics that allows light to focus into the receiver. Light therefore travels at an equal distance at all points of the screen, as opposed to a flat screen where the lights at the edges have to travel a longer distance, hence the slight distortion or discomfort. This is less effective on a curved TV because your seating distance means the whole TV is within a smaller curvature in view and the curve losses effect. Unless it's a giant cinema screen… Eg the IMAX would be awesome curved.

Curved screens are especially useful if using multiple side by side. The curvature of the combined screens is even more pronounced and you can view far edges of the set-up comfortably. Chain enough together in a large room and you can create a perfect circle. Do the same above and below and you could effectively live inside a 3D virtual sphere like a spermatozoa inside an egg creating a new life.

      • It still sounds like a gimmick and a desperate attempt to sell new TVs in a market where everyone already has an HDTV and no reason to buy a new one.

I've had no problems with 'distortions' from flat screens. Hell, I had no problem when they were CRTs and the curvature was in the opposite direction, which must have distorted things even worse! I've been in cinemas and even imax where there are super massive flat screens and never noticed the distortion.

The big trade off is, for a big screen TV in the lounge room, only one person gets the optimal view. Everyone else is going to have a distorted view because it was only calibrated for the person sitting dead center. It would also depend on you sitting the perfect distance from the screen, or else each pixel will still not be equidistant to your eyes.

        • It's been widely reviewed that curved TVs are a completely different experience. Curved TVs are not optimal for the curved screen experience because you're not close enough to the screen to benefit from the reduced angles at the edges.

For this 34" curved monitor think of it like this, imagine you were reading a book in front of you as wide as this monitor. It would be more comfortable reading it bent at the spine and the far edges wrapping toward your eyes, rather than a stiff straight book where you have to adjust your view to read the far edges. Might be subtle, but it makes a noticeable difference.

Here's a great in-depth review with lots of pics.

    http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u3415w.htm

    "Conclusion

The size and format of the Dell U3415W took a few days to get used to, but after that we really did enjoy working with the wide desktop space, high resolution and comfortable pixel pitch size. The curved format was also nice to work with we felt, providing an immersive experience and a more natural feel than the flat 34" models we've seen. Performance wise the factory calibration was very pleasing, with a decent setup out of the box. This was coupled with a strong IPS contrast ratio as well which impressed us. The use of a flicker free backlight and light AG coating, as we've seen from all recent Dell UltraSharp models, was great news as well. Something which Dell should really start promoting we think.

Unlike the LG 34UM95 we tested, the stand was far more versatile here, offering a good range of adjustments. Connectivity was good and it was nice to see a few extras such as the dual USB upstream, integrated speakers and USB 3.0 support offered here. Dell have done a good job with the features on this model. They've even included a high end feature from their premium grade screens, the uniformity compensation function. This worked very well at improving the panel uniformity, it's just a shame it's not more flexible in its operation - being locked at a certain brightness level when used. Response times were moderate for an IPS panel, but we had perhaps hoped for a little better given some of the smaller IPS models we've tested from Dell recently. Maybe the 'fast' response time mode could have done with being a little less aggressive to make it more useable.

Overall the U3415W offered some good all-round performance you'd expect from a modern IPS panel. It was coupled with a nice set of extras, stand adjustments and features making it a nice choice if you are after an ultra-wide screen in this size range."

  • Anyone have suggestions for Graphics Card, I am using a Quadro5000 2.5gb ATM and will need to upgrade as It doesn't support anything above 2560x1440. So was thinking I would get the Asus R9 290X 4gb card or the cheaper Asus R9 280X 3gb but its tough trying to find the resolution details on these cards as they are not listed on either the Asus website or resellers which is very strange.

So anyone have suggestions for a graphics card I will be using the dell 34" U3415W WQHD 3440x1440 for mostly Photoshop / Lightroom and internet.
    Thanks in advance people.

  • Aaaagh must resist…

Would this be a lot better than my current two 24" Dells which are about 10 years old (and won't die)?

    • If you have duct tape you could tape them together and it'll be just as good! :)

    • This will be a huge upgrade over a twin monitor setup, even if only in aesthetics.

  • 2% Cashback via Cash Rewards
***********Cash Rewards 2% should make the total price $1065.50**********

How does this work? When I entered the CTECH20 code, it only took off 20% and brought the price down to $1087.20, not $1065.50. Do I need to enter another code to get the extra 2% off?

    • Mate you need to register at cashrewards.com.au then once logged in, visit the ebay store from inside that site. All ebay purchases from then will add 2% credit based on full purchase amount into your cashrewards account which you can withdraw after it's validated (a few weeks).

      • Thanks!!

  • Hey just got CASH Back notice and I worked it out wrong we get back more than calculated!
    Retailer: eBay Australia
    Date of Sale: 31/03/2015
    Sale Value: AUD 1359.00
    Expected Cashback: AUD 30.01

Also for those who can claim back GST (Legit work monitor, cough, cough)
its also calculated at the full price GST 123.55 Total 1,359.01 just got the invoice from Dell.

so my actual cost is $933.45?? so who reckons that the CTECH20 was a waste of time?? I am happy:))

Purchased the MSI GTX960 4GB card from PLE on their website for $365 to run this as my old graphics card will only go to 2560x1440

    • Never thought of claiming it on tax, that's a very good idea. I do work from home with remote access. Knowing that info before it expired probably would have swayed me.

So who's enjoying their new monitor? I assume those who ordered received it by now. Got mine yesterday, it's a great quality screen. The bleed issue is a non-issue for me cos I don't work in the dark, but it is there - mainly on the left top and bottom corners. The colour calibration was great off the box, didn't have to tweak anything. Except for brightness, I have it down to 35% for comfortable viewing. The adjustable neck is very smooth and easy, one of its best features. I was expecting to be wowed by the size of the screen but since I didn't have a previous monitor I had to reference point except by 50" TV so it actually looked small haha. But it's superb for having multi browsers open etc. Happy with my purchase.

Purchased mine on April 1st. Counting down the days until delivery now. Apparently 14th of April but hoping it's delivered sooner.

I did purchase the Dell P2715Q (4k IPS 27") monitor for $711 (last ozbargain deal in feburary!!), but product was constantly delayed and ultimately i canceled the order as I think this monitor is nicer. IMO will provide more real working space since 4k at 27" is prob too small PPI.

      • Maybe worth checking delivery confirmation with Dell as I had received many different delivery dates, they say they are waiting for payment and my PayPal account says paid on the 31st March and sent 6th April?? funds came out my bankacc 2nd April so just trying to sort out the mixup but glad I checked otherwise I would have been waiting till the 14th April then find out its still not despatched.

side note what graphics card are any using to run the 34"?

My MacBook Air 11" mid-2013 supports the monitor just fine. Looks brilliant.

        • I actually got the email to say it's already been shipped..
          I'm using GTX970's in SLI.

Also apparently some guys in whirlpool forum have had success in overclocking monitor to 82hz - http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2334931

        • @GuniGuGu:

Yeah, might just be a problem with my order but I also got a email from ebay Dell saying it had shipped as below…

Hi xxxx - Your order has shipped to address…xxxx.

@MMM: Follow up. Just received it :)
Now gotta somehow get this from the office to home ~ 3km's away… bit heavy to walk. Tram will be busy as all hell.

          @GuniGuGu:

The box is HUGE. I thought I could carry it home from the post office (a short walk from home), but I had to wheel it back to mine. It will be awkward to carry. Good luck! But don't worry the efforts will be rewarded when you unbox :)

If you find that no sound is coming out of your integrated monitor speakers when using DisplayPort, solution here: http://www.dell.com/Support/Article/hk/en/hkdhs1/SLN296515

Fixed the problem for me. On that note, speakers are decent, just lacks bass (bass just "thumps"). But tones across the range are very clear and has good depth (doesn't sound tinny). Volume goes loud. I think the upcoming HP z34 with side speakers will win out, purely because the sound will fire at you, not downwards (assuming quality is decent).

One interesting phenomenon with the curved edges is a sense of parallex (I think that's the right word). I have the OSX purple mountain background and the edges jump out, looking 3D. Or alternatively, it looks like the glass edge sticks out like the glass has a 3D bezel. It's just like those old school abstract images where in a certain focus, you can see the 3D image. With the same principles, it's the differences in depth creating the illusion. Because it looks 3D you almost want to reach out to the edges and feel it but of course it's just an illusion. Put your eye closer, and the illusion disappears. Wonder if anyone else experiences it.

    • Thanks, have made a shortcut to the info as it may save time trying to problem solve the issue when I get the monitor.

  • Received mine yesterday and was great for the hour it was working before it died. Replacement is on it's way and should be here tomorrow, hopefully it's not third time the charm.

    • Sorry to hear it did not start well. The good thing with Dell is that they have a new panel delivered next day, which is great service.

  • In the menu options under audio then's a setting to toggle button sounds. I have it ON but there are no sounds when I press the buttons. If anyone figures this out let me know!

    • I tried this too - no Sound, really odd.

This is from the manual - "Button Sound The monitor beeps every time a new option is selected in the menu. This feature enables or disables the sound."
      It should work.

  • I received mine yesterday - it's a beautiful but flawed monitor. Being only the third one on the market I can understand the limitations will be removed over time. I'm probably going to return it (2 week return period + Paypal will pay the costs up to $45) as in the coming months there will be better offerings on the market - for an $1100~ monitor it's hard to stomach.

The picture by picture functionality is a little rough (plugging in two pc's) - to switch keyboard's between devices you have to fiddle around with the settings each team - this often has a delay - and is not really as described. The touch buttons aren't exactly amazing either.

The firmware could also use some work - in the product description there is a "Firmware Update Utility" though I've found no reference of it or mention besides that page. Mine also occasionally completely redraws the screen - however I feel this is a GPU issue rather than the monitor.
