@Bjay: Yeah most likely overleveraged then. You could try cancelling your current credit card before applying for a new one if you are trying to churn points, aim for the cards with minimum $6k credit limit or less (rather than the ones with minimum $15k credit limit).

              • @sydonk: That’s what I thought. I had no issues before but that maybe because I only had one home loan. Will stick to lower limit cards for now. Thanks

  • +1

Hesitant to reapply for this one - freq. churn n burn here.
Applied around this time last year for this card and just got a generic email with rejection after the "reviewing 5-10 days". Didn't call to enquire further as it appeared a lot of churners got rejected too.
It was my first card rejection ever! and since then have had 3 other successful cards applied for, points earnt and card closed since.

Good luck to the churners - would be keen to here your outcomes if you could share too.

    • I applied for this card twice - first time I had the same experience. I called and operator provided no additional information. I checked my credit and saw they didn’t even make an inquiry or check. I applied again a few months later and was accepted almost instantly.

For context, I’d just closed a credit card when I applied the first time and didn’t open any new cards in between the periods.

      • how many do you churn a year?

        • +1

Only around one a year - usually close at the 11 month mark so I was pretty surprised when I was told that I was rejected. But I’ve been churning for probably 4 years now.

        • 3-5 cards depending on t&c's of 'previously held period'

          • @spikiii: yep I do 3-5 and hesitant to apply

            • @ozbargainerlife1: i'm not going to apply.

as much as 100K bonus points is becoming increasingly rare - it's just not worth the ding to credit check because they don't like that i'm a churner…

    • Yeah I think I'll pass on this for the same reason. Rejected multiple times despite no issues with any other bank or CC.

  • +1

Also be aware you can't utilise the travel credit in conjunction with the free lounge passes. It's one or the other.

Must book a QF directly through qantas to get lounge passes…!

    • Can book using FF points and pay fees with AMEX to get passes. Previously you could also pay for things like carbon offset with the card and get them as it registers as a direct Qantas booking cost.

  • I have amex explorer. Am I eligible?

    • Yes if yo identify yourself as New Amex Cardholder :)
New Amex cardholders only. You must not have held a card issued by Amex Australia in the last 18 months.

  • Wow there is no min salary mentioned

    • 2 Amex lounge passes (for Melb and Syd international)

Do these come through straight away? Are they transferable?

    • +1

Why not Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth?

      • Enjoy two complimentary entries to The Centurion® Lounge, plus two Qantas Club Lounge invitations each year after purchasing select Qantas products and services.*

There are also Qantas Lounges in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth

      • +1

because Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth do not have the Amex Centurion lounges

    • +2

I believe the Amex lounge (centurion) passes are tied to your card. You just show your physical card (not sure if the digital card will work) at the centurion lounge and they will let you in.

      Not transferable!

      • If you have a secondary card holder, they can use the pass

  • Are they still declining Churners quite a bit?

    • Yes.

  • Can the Qantas travel credit be used for hotels booked via Amex travel, or does it have to be flights?

That’s a whole lotta referral links. The referral links show different minimum spend amounts and points. Which referral link matches the posts title?

  • +8

Hi all, just beware that the Qantas AmEx Ultimate does not cover rental vehicle excesses, don't book any hire cars using this card!

    • +1

That's a big one to note. Thanks.

    • Saw this last night too, good pickup! Looks like the Amplify Qantas Signature does though?

Any others out there worth reommending?

    • That’s very surprising and a bit of a shock. Would have never checked and assumed it was, thanks for the heads up

  • Can the supplementary card be used by partner to get into Amex Centurion Lounge?

    • Read the first line. You need to apply via a referral link.

  • +1

As a retired person they won’t let you churn. It doesn’t matter what your Super pension is, your share dividends, money in the bank, etc. I suspect they want people with good incomes but likely to not pay the balance off each month.

    • I referred a retired person the other day and they got approved. They just need to see some Super details.
This person wasn't a churner and I don't believe even had a CC.

      • +1

Yeah being a churner is a bigger black mark for AMEX than having a lower/intermittent income it would seem.

LIMITED TIME OFFER | Ends 11 March 2025

  • Random question anyone have a recommendation for a good travel card with good exchange rates like 28 degrees without the fees?

And a recommendation for a good visa qff points card?

    • +1

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/860487 for 28deg alternative.. I think Bankwest or Bendigo.
      - For ATM withdrawals I use ubank, which has good forex rates and very easy to set up (<10 minutes on a mobile app).

I use Qantas Premier Platinum for places with no Amex, it's a mastercard tho.

  • Will the current standard offer of 50k points meant to expire yesterday be changed anytime soon?
That way we could probably get more base points + the referral points?
Or does the current referral offer already take into account the new base rate somehow?

  • Anyone that applied for this promo in October? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869194
Will I get the point if I apply and make first purchase before 31/1?

    • I think you can earn an extra 20K Qantas points if your first credit card point transfer to your Qantas FF account is made before January 31. Did you activate it?

      • I did activated it. T&C reads "Qantas Points earned from the member’s first purchase must be credited to their Qantas Frequent Flyer or Qantas Business Rewards account by 31 January 2025"

        • This is a good deal. Nowadays, there are no other 100K bonus point offers in the first year.

  • Is there a QF points to dollar calculator for approximation somewhere?

  • I applied and got instant approved for NAB signature yesterday but not yet spent/activated.

Will this pop up and potentially cause an instant decline?

    • +1

no, their systems usually do not update that quickly, I have applied for multiple credit cards with a day or so gap between and got approved for both.

Just don't do it with banks that share systems, eg, Virgin (citi, now NAB) and NAB branded cards, and Westpac and St George etc.

    • Unlikely because your credit report won't be updated that quickly, so it wouldn't show the NAB card yet.

      Best time to apply

      • I just got a notification from credit savvy of a change and I checked and it's on there! Shoot!

  • Are we elligible for the bonus if we already have a business rewards Amex card?

    • +1

      t&c's:

This offer is only available to new American Express Card Members. If you previously held a David Jones American Express Card and have not held any other American Express Card(s) in the past 18 months, you will be eligible for the offer. All other Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the past 18 months are ineligible for this offer

reading that as including business amex as that's a card product issued by Amex Australia…

  • +1

I have a discovery Qantas card. When I generate my referral, it takes you to a page to apply for the same discovery card. But then you can select the Qantas Ultimate card and you get the 100k bonus offer. Will I get the 40k bonus points if I refer?

  • Applied and got the will get back to you in 5-10 days email…. I'm guessing rejected?

    • +2

I did it yesterday and got same email.
Just got approved after submitting my payslips

      • +1

That's good to know, thank you! I'll stay optimistic then

    • +2

Same, email about supplying pay slips and get back in 5 to 10 days, got approved next day

  • To activate the overseas travel insurance on this card, do you need to purchase a return flight in/out of Australia?

  • Any idea if I can refer a supplementary card holder that I have on my account (wife)? They have never had an amex account

    • +1

      Yes

  • +1

It seems like amex is doing a few referral programs now. I see it available for the Explorer card as well with 100,000 MR if that interests people more, might be worth trying the explorer referral links too.

“Bonus Membership Rewards® Points when they apply online using the referral link by 8 April 2025 for the American Express Explorer® Credit Card, are approved and spend $4,000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months from Card approval date. New American Express Card Members only. T&Cs apply.“

  • +2

you dont need referral code, this promotion is on the amex website

  • It's been a while since I've done an application. If you request a very high credit limit in the application, could this be a reason to get rejected, or do they just give you the highest they are prepared to give? I vaguely remember a option like "give me the highest you can based on my application" but I'm skeptical and think it's a waste of time getting a card like this only to end up with a ~$3K limit which is what happened to a friend and it's such a PITA asking for a limit increase these days…

  • +2

They had this offer last year, and last year there was a better offer at the beginning of Feb it was up to 120,000 points. Food for thought.

  • -2

I cancelled my Amex in 2023, and using friends Add on since last 8 months. Am I eligible ?

  • -1

    Rejected, that's a first.

  • +1

Cleared through the gates. NAB QF Sig, and Amex QF Ultimate, instant approval both within 48 hours. Praise be

  • +1

I have been asked for 3 months of payslips, has anyone else had this? If so, once supplied were you approved?

    • Yes and approved.
      all sorted in 1 hour.
      Excellent process.

    • Approved in minutes. No payslips

    • yep just got approved fairly quick after submitting
had to merge some payslips as I could only upload 5 at a time (fortnightly payslips)

      • +1

awesome, thanks! I got approved not long ago too, seems if you get to this stage you're sweet…

        • stupid question but I didn't see anywhere to set a credit limit
Do they do it based on your salary?

          • +1

@shole: I had the option actually, let them set it or set it myself. I chose to let them set it

  • Referral link doesn't seem to be working for me? I get an "Sorry, there was an error in accessing the application. Please try again using the link provided in your original offer." error.

    • +1

Tested from the link in the Deal/referral section and seems to be working for me.

  • +2

got approved within 48hours, whoever's referral link I used, grats on your 40k points

  • Signed up few months ago 70k bonus not as good but got approved almost instantly, two days fully set up.

  • I recently got approved for this same card but with a worse deal! The card is here but I haven't activated it yet. Is there any way of cancelling this one to take advantage of the referral deal, or do I now count as an amex account holder for the next 18 months?

  • -5

The offer IS AVAILABLE directly form the Amex website: https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/credit-cards/qantas-ul…

I don't mind doing referrals but I don't approve the lies about the "random referral" from OP. Just say you want to cash in the referral points.

    • +1

      lies

Seems a bit melodramatic, I mean the website might have only just been updated so they were correct at the original time of posting 3 days ago? Also it's not like they deceptively linked their own referral account so what's the harm in gifting one of your random fellow ozbargainer some points anyway?

      • Thank you vawiyoci. I've updated the post now that the offer is also available on Amex's website with a different end date.

  • Does anyone know if strata payments via DEFT count as an 'eligible purchase'?

  • -1

Did anyone apply, and get an email asking to call and give Amex a selfie? How to get around this if unwilling to give a selfie? Highly inappropriate to be asked for this and am shocked.

    • Yeah a relative did, must've tripped some verification flags so just supplying your licence number wasn't enough for them.

    • How to get around this

Call them and cancel your application if you aren't willing to meet their requirements.

  • How long does it take to get cancellation notification? I'm a big churner (4-6 cards a year) and have applied for this offer earlier today with the standard email stating they'll get back to me within 5-10 working days..

    • +1

If you don't get approved or requested for income proof docs within a day then it's more than likely a rejection. They notify by snail mail so won't be any emails or texts about it.

      • Thanks mate, seems like some got rejected instantly and I didn’t. Fingers crossed I’ll be requested to send through income docs

        • you can call the number in the application confirmation number, and the rep will tell you if it's been rejected or not!

          • @Dunky: Thanks! Just called and declined lol

I havent held an Amex card for few years now but have churned a lot of cards.. annoying but I guess no surprise there

  • -2

I currently have 3 credit cards, 2k + 15K + 15k. Am i likely to get rejected for having 3 CC? No issues with income

  • Damn declined after calling up to check

Never had an Amex but have churned cards within the last 12 months with one card still active

    • Did they do a credit check? or declined before that

      • Hasn't shown up on my Experian but the AMEX person said they use Veda

Current score is 800+ in excellent range on Experian

        • Credit score doesn't mean anything. It's just an arbitary number. What the banks are looking for in a credit check is how many cards/loans you have, how many you have opened and closed and any missed repayments.

    • @Unorthodox what was the limit of your one active card?

      • $6k St George one, but recently went through 2 NAB ones within the last 8 months

Never had issues in the past with a bank issued black ($15k) + 2 lower 3-6k ones which were usually low rate/platinum offers

  • With the $450 travel voucher, can I book for myself and family? Or can it only be used for travel in cardholders name?
