  • just applied. wish good luck to me and Zachary

    • were you approved and wahts ur churn history

    • Also just applied. May the churning gods approve.

      • Did you get the email stating they will let you know in 5 - 10 days as well?

        • Oops, just realised I did get an automated email yesterday.

  • +3

Handy tip for those looking to pay council fees - I did a test and paid my council rates via Auspost bill pay in app using PayPal with my linked amex and got the full points (ie it isn’t considered gov spend)

  • Can I stack Cashrewards with a referral to earn bonus rewards?

  • Applied late Sunday, approved on Monday morning. That was quick. They called to confirm my spending.

How long does it take for the card to arrive? I have a big spend soon that will help me achieve 5k sooner.

    • How long did yours take to arrive? Got mine approved and confirmed along a similar timeline

      • +1

It arrived on Wednesday. 4 days from applying to receiving it.

I applied 2 weeks ago, received only a confirmation email, then heard nothing. Found a letter of rejection in my mailbox a few days ago.

My credit score is excellent (Equifax 950+, Experian 800+), always paid in full and never missed one. My main salary is in the 95th percentile.

I had a long history of churning though. Maybe it's game-over for me…

    • I'm in the 87th percentile, score of only 850 or so but no missed payments ever. Was rejected last year in June for this, so just let things sit for half a year, applied late Jan, and got it. There's still hope.

Also manually choosing a lower credit limit may increase chances of rejection, so I just let them set it this time and they gave me a whopping $25,000, but can lower it once you have the card thankfully.

      • hey~ can I ask whats ur churn history in last 12 months

      • and did you apply via referral link or not~ not sure if it matters

        • Applied direct not via link. Only one new card in the past 12 months besides the AMEX but was rejected twice for Westpac in June and August also (plus the AMEX rejection).

          • @GS9891: thanks.. had one amex rejection in 12 months but had 4 other cards all closed now (recent closed was January)… cant decide if to apply or not

      • +1

Also manually choosing a lower credit limit may increase chances of rejection, so I just let them set it this time and they gave me a whopping $25,000, but can lower it once you have the card thankfully.

I feel this is an important recommendation and I'll make sure to not pick a limit on my next application attempt.

      • +2

Choosing a minimum credit may trigger the rejection, that's wisdom! (I did pick $6k only on my application!)

I applied for NAB signature card at the airport while waiting to get on a plane in 2023 and and left everything at default and they instantly gave me $75k which made my heart jumped a bit. They even gave me a digital card to spend immediately which I used to buy a bottle of water.

        • I selected 4k, which is mega imbecilic facepalm in hindsight.

they instantly gave me $75k which made my heart jumped a bit

I'd guess it's probably fine to select something like 30k if you don't want to risk the possibility of them giving 75k.

Fortunately decreasing credit limit should be as simple as a few online clicks.

I'm looking to apply for the Qantas AmEx Ultimate card and noticed there are different referral links available. Can anyone recommend a referral link to use?

  • Yep automatic rejection now twice from Amex and Amex only ever. Definitely a churner filter is on their system.

  • Applied on Sunday and got auto approval, card had arrived today! Very good timing due to planning to go to Japan in march!

    • Glad to hear that some people are getting approved. Clearly my application on Sunday was not one of the lucky ones :)

Do rates, rego and ATO payments count towards the $5k spend in 3 months? The T&C doesn’t specify.

Any tips to maximise points for those transactions? Please don’t neg me - I’m new to this game lol.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure you get 0.5 points for every dollar spent on govn bodies. So yes, those payments will count.

Their T&Cs specifically don't have govern payments in the exclusion list.

      • +5

You could buy the Cole’s Mastercards which have $0 fees now to pay for rates, Revo and ATO payments, will get full 1.25 points per $ this way

        • So you buy the Coles mastercards with your Amex card to get full points, then pay the ATO with them? Where do you get the Coles mastercards?

        • Thanks for the suggestion! I have a council rates for $1.1k for City of Melbourne. Now, on their website it says they charge 0.33% card fee, what happens if i call up and pay via phone? Do you know if this card acts as a debit or credit card? thanks in advance

          • @scarh24: Does city of council allow for payment via auspost bill pay app? If so, you can get away without any fees by paying via PayPal and using your linked Amex. I did a test payment for Marion council (SA) for $50 and got the full points at 1.25 rate

            • @Crowing: Unfortunately not, but i appreciate the suggestion!

  • Just activated my card yesterday. Does anyone know when the $450 travel credit appears?

    • +1

Instantly when you navigate to Amex travel and have selected Qantas flight. In the payment screen it’ll give you the option to select the $450 credit

      • I didn't see the credit when attempting to book a Qantas flight that was over $450. I asked via online chat and they said give it 5 to 7 days.

        • Did you book it via amex travel or qantas directly? You have to use the Amex travel

          https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/travel/

          • @Slo20: I used the Amex travel link in the app, booked a Qantas flight that was over $450, during checkout no $450 credit just the full amount to be charged to the card.

        • I used the amex travel link in the app, booked a qantas flight, selected to get $450 credit during checkout. the credit appeared within 3 days.

      • +2

For those wondering, I range amex today and was told that the $450 Qantas credit will appear once the annual fee is charged to the card.

  • Just applied for the card. I wonder if I can get approved and have it arrive within 2 weeks for a trip I am taking.

    • I applied two days ago, and mine just got approved! The card should arrive within seven business days

  • Will i be eligible if I am the secondary card holder?

  • Applied on Tuesday and still no response. How long did it take for you guys to hear back?

    • Instant request to upload payslips online, then approved the next day. Unfortunately you'll probably just get the rejection letter in the mail.

      • Dammit, that's not what I was hoping for. I cancelled my ANZ card just before applying to increase my chances so guess I'll have to hunt down a different credit card. :/

    • +1

I called them up after 48 hours and they approved it live while I was on the phone

      • Have you had the card before? Will give them a ring sometime tomorrow

        • Nope, never had amex before but have had a few other cards.

    • Update: was rejected.

  • Does anyone know if paying body corporate fees with DEFT / StrataPay is counted as an eligible spend on this card?

    • I used Sniip and it was counted as eligible spending!

      • Thanks I guess better to do it that way to be 100%

But if anyone knows if you can bypass the Sniip step and pay direct let me know

        • If you use a referral link to create a new account, you can get $10.

  • Does anyone know how soon the bonus 40000 referral points reflect on your card?

Just refered a friend who got approved and was looking to use those points for a travel booking i need to make.
    Thanks

    • +1

i got mine in my amex account two days after their approval

      • Thanks for your reply. Did you get any email too? Once they got approved.

        • +1

nah. just shows up on the points to be transferred.

  • Declined :( excellent credit history, had DJs amex premium only 2 yrs ago,1 other CC. CS told me reason will be in the letter but it wasn’t. I need to book qantas to USA & return from Canada (51st state) haha can a family member apply and book for me if card approved & as a supp can I get the qantas lounge myself without the main holder

  • Submitted the application today and as I was uploading the required documents, they called my mobile to confirm a few things and gave instant approval. All done within an hr from start of the application to approval. So best to check and answer your phone (from Sydney (02)).

    • The approval team probably wanted to clear all the applications ASAP on Fri and leave early for their valentine date 😁

  • When applying for this card does it ask to list your liabilities? Ie. any other cards you have open?

    • It does ask for the combined total of opened credit cards.

      • Thanks for that

        • Every credit application will ask you for this - it's basically the most important factor in the approval.

          • @Nom: Sometimes they prefill with cards limits and you can delete the ones no longer relevant or recently closed.

The issue I have is that I had a Buy Now Pay Later account from NAB that I closed in August but is still listed as open on my credit report, also also another card I recently closed is still there.

So it’s good if you are able to manually report this information, as the information they have from the credit bodies may not entirely be up to date.

Anyone done the refund on the $450 credit as described earlier in these comments recently? Looking to get this card and want to check if it's still working first.

    • Confirmed that it still works as of about two weeks ago.

  • They don't ask for assets at all during the application? Isn't that strange?

  • That was the quickest approval I have ever had. The final page of the application hadn't even finished loading before I got the text and email saying I was approved. Never had an Amex though and only recently begun churning so probably no problems from that perspective.

  • First time rejected for a card in 18 years.. sad

  • -2

Partner and I are serious churners,no debt or defaults both rejected.Encourage posters to complain to AFCA about banks filtering churners from public offerings.
The Amex rejection letter is a very broad explanation and AFCA believes they have to identify the sole reason of rejection. We have opened a case against Amex discriminatory actions, I encourage others to do likewise.
Your first step is to ring Amex and speak with the application team manager and get a new case reference number to pass on to AFCA for them to investigate.
Or give in without a whimper…

    • They wouldn’t even budge when asking for a manual review or lower credit limit. There are a couple of accounts marked as active on my credit card even though they are closed. Basically said I need to apply again in 90 days.

    • complain to AFCA about banks filtering churners from public offerings.

What is the complaint though ? If the bank doesn't want you as a customer, then surely that's entirely up to them - why would AFCA care ?

      • I also got knock backed by NAB contacted AFCA,they were considerate about cc denial and told me to contact NAB resolution team and ask for a reference number of complaint and they would investigate.Mention that to NAB they could not help me enough and now I have a NAB card.

In the process of doing this with Amex,a bit harder as they only have a supervisor, still not made contact yet.
Stuff them I think it's discriminatory.if they don't want churners business work out a better solution.
AFCA stance is your credit rating is excellent, they must DETAIL why you have been rejected, not that broad paragraph everyone gets citing different reasons.

    • Any updates on your AFCA case?

  • Hi, not sure if this is already asked - Can you apply for both Virgin and Qantas Amex cards at the same time and get the points? or 18 months wait period applies for these 2 too?

  • Does AMEX offer instant digital card activation after approval?

Otherwise how long does it take for the card to arrive?

    • No instant digital card. It takes around 2-3 working days.

If churners want to complain there is a department AFCA to mitigate your grievances with Amex.
Twice now I have been rejected.Had the card 2 times before that and churned. They have to give you a reason. What's the use of a credit score report on defaults and bad debt.If they won't abide by it .Should work both ways.

  • Do people think this is a card worth holding onto for long term? Given Amex has a track record of rejecting even mild churners?

    • I think only you can answer. If you see you can utilise the yearly travel credit then that's a no brainer to keep it. The lounge passes & travel insurance would be icing on top.

    • This depends entirely on whether you spend >=$450 on Qantas flights every year.

If you don't, then you're going to be spending the $450 annual fee on … nothing.

  • Got rejected :(

  • got approved immediately, closed my from BOM CC last week.

Can I only login once I recieve the card and use the flight credits?

  • Can I just confirm something, please?

The new card holder offer gives you 100k points, but a referral link also states a bonus 100k points. Is this the same 100k?

For example, if I signed up via the new card holder plain offer (not referral) am I essentially missing out on an additional 100k? Or is it just 100k either way and the referral link simply benefits the referrer their 40k?

    Thanks!

    • The latter - "100k either way and the referral link simply benefits the referrer their 40k"

      • thank the heavens above, haha. I was like "you have got to be kidding me" as I just got approved for this today from the normal link. Thanks heaps, mate.

  • The American Express Explorer® Credit Card seems to be 110k bonus (personalised), and it's also 2x AMEX points for $1 every day purchases compared to 1.25x Qantas points with the Ultimate card. Can you transfer AMEX points into Qantas points though? I read you might be able to at a 1:1 ratio but not sure

    • Only the platinum AMEX card allows transfers from AMEX points to Qantas.

  • I have done the trick mention in the thread buy getting $450 credited to my card by way of booking and cancelling airfair. I plan to close the card in 4 days, can i buy gift card with this credit card ? Will that be treat as cash advance?

    • Just out of curiosity when did you get the $450credit back, haven’t receive mine yet did it last night but hasn’t come through yet.

      • +1

Did it on the 22nd and got the credit the next day 23rd. Still has the charge pending. Look like i am keeping the card for another year as it is free with this trick.

  • +1

Did anyone else get their points credited before they hit $5k spend?

Only explanation I could think of was that the annual card fee counts towards the spend (although to my knowledge that’s not usually the case…)

    • +2

Just saw my bonus points added as well. Spent only $4500 (+450 fee), total $4950 so far. Good on AMEX. No complaints.
