      • I've 'only' opened and closed 2 last year. Is that a likely reject?

        • Depends when the last opening was. Seems if you opened one within 6 months it’s likely a rejection. Longer than 6 months should be ok

          • @illusion99: So they don't look at <6 month pattern of opening/closing? I haven't had any new openings in last 6 months actually but had some card opened around 12 months ago and closed recently.

            • +1

@Purkulator: Can’t tell you certain as I don’t work for them but there’s no harm in applying and seeing what happens

        • +1

I was approved after being asked to upload payslips. I have one CC currently open (opened in Oct. 24), another CC closed in Oct (opened Apr 24) along with a home loan. So, no harm in applying.

          • @ozprash: whats ur churn history in last 12 months

            • @ozbargainerlife1: 5 cards applied.
Card 1: Applied Apr 24; Closed Oct 24
              Card 2: Applied Oct 24 - Rejected
              Card 3: Applied Oct 24 - Rejected
Card 4: Applied Nov 24 - Currently Open
Card 5: Amex Ultimate - approved

    any churners have success?

    • +3

They are still rejecting churners. Got the "we will review and get to you within 5 business days, aka rejected"

    • Yep, no hurdles

      • @retnup how many cards are you churning yearly?

        • +1

At 4 in the last 7 of 12 months

    • Was rejected for this around June last year despite never having AMEX (but a lot of other cards over the years), took a pause and approved this time (though my salary also increased a bit).

      • How long was your pause - last CC applied before this one?

        • 7 months for AMEX, though applied for a Westpac card in early Oct in between too and was knocked back for that also.

  • Can anyone that has been lucky enough to jag a referral share how long it was until received points?

    • +1

Still waiting. The individual I referred was approved on 16th, received card on 17th, met minimum spend on 20th. Amex confirmed referral, but said it would take up to 8-10 weeks to receive referral points. Previously it was next day after approval.

      • OK that's good to know. Yeah, I did a referral back in October and it was near instant. Appreciate your response.

        • Are you also waiting for referral points?

          • +1
            • @DooDah: Did you receive the referral bonus points? Could you please let us know if you received them? I just want to know how long it will take to receive the referral bonus.
My friend used my referral link, but I haven’t received any notification. Where can I find the referral confirmation message?

              • @san87: Haven’t received mine yet this time around. Last time there was no confirmation, just a dump of point into Amex account.

                • @DooDah: ohk.. Could you please let us know if you received them? thanks

What do people use amex card to reach $5K spend if you dont have big purchases planned?

    • It's $5K over 3 months - you don't need to do anything special, just put your normal recurring costs like groceries, petrol, etc on there.

      • We don’t really spend any more than $1K per month on groceries. Other spendings ($2K) occur from places that don’t accept AMEX..

  • Can anyone confirm whether zip pay accepts Amex as a payment method? I’ve seen two articles on zip pay with contradicting answers..

Can I still get bonus points if I already have Amex explorer card?

    • it's in the t&c's:

This offer is only available to new American Express Card Members. If you previously held a David Jones American Express Card and have not held any other American Express Card(s) in the past 18 months, you will be eligible for the offer. All other Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the past 18 months are ineligible for this offer

reading that I assume your Amex Explorer card was issued by Amex Australia, so no… you would be ineligible

      • Thanks. I have thought maybe this card is offered by qantas. Just has an other look and it’s also issued by Amex. So I think you are right. I’m not able to get bonus points for another Amex card.

  • Did anyone receive a referral bonus for this offer?

    • If you took this offer, the 100k is the bonus, no more.
They released 100k to everyone very soon after so it only benefits the referer in this offer

      • I was talking about a 40k referral bonus to the referrer.

        • Gotcha!

  • Does the offer exclude the current additional card member now?
T&C says "All other Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the past 18 months are ineligible for this offer."

    • +1

I think you should be fine based on this points hack article:

      https://www.pointhacks.com.au/american-express-points-offer-…

If I am an Additional Card Member on my partner’s American Express card, will I be eligible for the sign-up bonus if I apply for a card as the primary cardholder?
Yes—being an Additional Card Member is not a barrier to applying for your own card and being eligible for a bonus.

  • If I cancel my credit card now, how long do I have to wait before it will reflect on my credit profile? I guess it best to apply after this.

    • 18months per the post

      • I meant cancelling another credit card n apply for this. Do I need to wait for a while to reflect on my credit profile?

        • +1

Comments say it depends on the past 6 months of credit check and if you are a regular churner

  • -4

Can anyone confirm that the 5k in 3 months spend criteria could be completed by paying another credit card balance off?

    • pretty clear if you read the t&cs

      • Yup, good point. Just read now, thanks.

    • LOL, seriously?

  • I have this card but AMEX changed their policy regarding the $450 travel credit the last year

You must spend it on trips that are OVER the cost of the $450 amount so that is the minimum spend, secondly when you book with AMEX they significantly inflate the price of the qantas/jetstar ticket compared to booking direct or via your usual travel agent website so the $450 amount doesnt get you very far and is limiting.

    • +1

when you book with AMEX they significantly inflate the price of the qantas

This is untrue - it's perfectly possible to book a Qantas flight that's almost exactly the same price as it is on Qantas.com.au

  • From my previous comment, auto declined so I went and applied for a Citi card and got approved.

Very likely they saw it churn activity and declined me, no previous AMEX besides work issued AMEX corp cards in the past

    • Did you apply for the Citi straightaway after getting declined?

      • A few days after I called up to find out AMEX was declined and before I received the snail mail letter.

        • Thanks, looks like I’ll do the same. Does it show up on your credit check even if you’re declined?

  • +2

Applied for this card on friday. Recieved request for payslips on monday. Got approved on tuesday ( today). Have churned quite a few cards within last 12 months. So probably there are more factors than just the number of cards churned.

Also, congratulations to 'Justin' for getting the 40,000 referal points soon… 👍

    • whats ur past 12 month churn history

      • 7 cards in the past 12 months - applied, approved and closed.

  • Wow, applied last night and got the typical message "We will get back to you shortly" and based on the above comments assumed I would be rejected but this morning got email saying approval and the card is being delivered. I was rejected last year for another AMEX card which I thought was due to churning. Seems like approval/rejection is really random as I have a history of churning (1-2x cards a year) and also currently have another CC open

    • when was your last application for a card?

      • +1

My last application was for a westpac altitude which was Sep 2024 (still open). The last Amex application which was declined was mid last year

        • +2

Could be good news if they're only checking last 3 months for churners

          • +1

            @CodeXD: @sim777

that's not bad, I was considering waiting until next month, I am 5 mths since opening a card, and my last amex was rejected maybe a year ago..

            might give it a crack

  • My friend uploaded payslips, and then nothing happened. Did he get rejected?

    • Pretty likely, they can call up to confirm cos AMEX doesn't notify you electronically but by snail mail instead.

      • Ohk. I read here that they don’t ask for payslips if the application is rejected in the first place, and AMEX support called him to upload recent payslips as soon as the application was submitted.

        • They're also pretty fast, so if not approved within like a day or so after submission then yeah.

  • +1

ANZ Qantas deal is also good https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/850198 : 90000 Qantas Points + $200 cashback, $5000 spend & $425 annual fee.

  • Safe to assume it doesn't but does the spend on the qantas flights pre-credit back, count towards the 5k spend?

  • If i applied and don't here back from them after 2 business days, safe to assume the application has been denied? i churned about 6 cards last year lol

    • +1

My friend also received no response for two days after submitting his payslips, and then Amex suddenly resent an email requesting income statements again. It's a bit weird, why ask for income statements if they're going to reject the application?

      • unfortunately i called in today and was informed i was declined. i guess it was because i had churned probably 6-7 cards last year

        • His application was approved after he resubmitted his payslips.

  • Got referral bonus today.

  • Also got a bonus added to "Qantas Frequent Flyer Points Earned this Statement Period"

  • Last applied for a CC almost 6mths ago
Last AMEX application Jan 2024 (denied - prob for churning)
This time.. 'We will notify you of the outcome within 5 - 10 business days.'

    • isnt that the standard rejection message?

      • yeh, so not ideal, no card in over 5mths, still amex rejecting me..

  • Amex terms say to get the 2x qantad lounge passes, you have to book a QF flight with the card and you’ll get the lounge passes two weeks later.

I need to book some jetstar flights asap but my amex card hasnt arrived yet.
    1. If i wait for the card and then book will I get the passes even though its a jetstar flight not qantas?
    or
    2. should I just book now with a different card and go with the centurion lounge passes instead? assuming they’re similar to the qantas lounge (i’ve never been so not sure)

  • +1

Application approved straight away and used referral to support the ozb community ;). It was rejected last time (probably around an year ago). No current credit cards and no new applications in the last year, if it helps anyone.

  • how soon did everyone receive their travel credit after card activation?

I am thinking to apply, then book flight tickets (non qantas) to Europe right away with the card and travel credit, as it is not that easy in Australia to spend using Amex without surcharges. I would assume the flight booking via the amex travel portal with this card is counted towards the $5k spending criteria?

    thanks all

    • It appears immediately after activation of card. My understanding is that the credit can only be applied to Qantas flights.

      • yep I think u r right, I checked the fine prints, must be used on qantas flights unfortunately

        • You can just do the flight hack (see first page of comments) to get the travel voucher credit into your account :)

  • +2

Thank you to the 2 ozbargainers who used my referral link.. easiest 80k Qantas points i have ever obtained :)

  • So just confirming that if using a referral link, I will still qualify for the 100k sign up bonus?

    • yes

    • Do you get point on top of 100K sign up? I heard was 40K is that true? I wanted to find a referral link as well but no friend has this card

      • You'll only get 100K points. Extra 20K from Qantas if you are eligible and register for this offer.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/890946

      • You can get 20,000 extra points if you haven't earned Qantas points using credit cards in the last 12 months.

  • How long to get the bonus points?

  • If I pay ATO payments directly with this card those will be considered as spend or not?

  • -1

Just wonder does anyone happen to apply this card or already have this card that doesn't mind to send me the referral link? Please…

  • just applied. wish good luck to me and Zachary

    • were you approved and wahts ur churn history

    • Also just applied. May the churning gods approve.

      • Did you get the email stating they will let you know in 5 - 10 days as well?
