Exclusion period also 2 yrs if you had the card previously?

    • +5

      Wow 2yrs now.

      • yeh used to be rewards vs qantas IIRC - now just any rewards

        • Wait really?! I remembered it was always any rewards card. Their t&cs mirrored Westpac.

        • And used to be 1 year. Now they've really made it harder to churn.
I had my Points Club Plus plan all ready to go, only to have to switch to NAB when they threw this curve ball last minute.

          • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: Hopefully Citibank don’t change their t&cs to receiving points within 12 months.

            • @nightelves: Don't you have to be a "New Customer" ?

              • @ozzieozzieozzie: I’ve done 2 Velocity 80k Citibank cc this year and both times got the bonus points.

                • @nightelves: Have you had the exact same Citibank card before though ? And within 12 months? Or are you swapping between different Citibank card types ?

                  • @ozzieozzieozzie: There’s no 12 months exclusion clause. You can check it out yourself. Even Virgin Money doesn’t have exclusion clause.

                    • @nightelves: I asked on web chat and they said I couldn't get the bonus points twice. (On the Qantas Prestige)

                      • @ozzieozzieozzie: Best to do your own research. I’m telling you from my experience. So trust who you want.

                        • @nightelves: I'm webchatting again as we speak. Seems the terms have been updated on November 20.

                          • @ozzieozzieozzie: I think the terms has been updated. IIRC - talked to an agent a couple months ago and you would of gotten the bonus.

    • +1

      wow thats so steep lol

    • I wonder when they made this change…..

  • If you already have Qantas account, still gotta pay 75$ for program?

    • +1

Yea, it is a charge from the bank. Think it as service charge to transfer bank point to qantas point…

      • Got it, thank you

    • Is that just for Qantas rewards cards or any rewards card?

      • +1

I interpreted as any card with them. Which I have an Amplify card at the moment, I'd jump on this if someone can find out it if it's only Qantas rewards they mean.

        • yeh I reckon same - any rewards. hopeless, think they used to distinguish

  • How do you claim the 2 lounge pass from St George?

  • +6

So, my advice to everyone, is to keep a spreadsheet/notes of when you applied, got, then closed each card.

Its easy to cycle through banks inc their owners as well as some cards roll up to their master banks for exclusions.

Add in you should not be applying for cards with the current financial scrutiny more than once in 9 months (yes some smash every 6 months but thats changing already).

Then cycle through the best ones and you'll find it easy to apply, use, abuse, discard and churn every 9 months. Do the same with a partner and its easy to get 150-220k points per year per person just on cards.

The glory days are gone, but its still possible to utilise them well.

Could you please elaborate on this?

Banks are getting much tighter on lending. Basically in AUS credit card debt and unsecured debt has skyrocketed as cost of living has gone up. So, banks are now getting worried. And with all credit checks, they're done based on machine learning and pre-set risk criteria. Like insurance companies.

So, they're getting tighter on approvals, on checking financials and one flag for financial risk is people opening many cards. We think we're doing it for points and that's harmless. Banks rules flag us as its the similar pattern to those in severe financial distress. More applications getting denied (which then in itself is a massive red flag for the next card) and its getting harder.

If an habitual card churner for points, right now waiting 9-12 months between cards is far safer than say, 4 years ago where I was smashing new cards every three months.

I now score my points in places without credit checks - electricity, health, bonus on giftcards, and other hacks.

        • +1

Makes sense! I figured a few years ago 6 months works like a charm for me and my partner, 4 cards per year among two of us. Will keep doing this pace unless I notice some scrutiny. Appreciate your detailed response!

          • +1

@goodfella: Yeah, I went from three months to six. I work in the space so saw/knew what's coming, hence the advice to move to 9 months. Means you can still do 4 per 18 months. Supplement with health churning and power and other things.

        • I've opened 4 cards this year:

ANZ rewards in Jan, NAB rewards in March, then I closed off my AMEX after my international travels, and closed both those two as well.

In November, applied for ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum and CommBank (Smart Yello offer) at the same time, so I could be honest and say I didn't have any open cards at the time. Both got approved. It will take 4 months and 4x $2000 spend to hit bonus and not pay monthly fee, and $5000 within 3 months on the ANZ to hit bonus.

Then I will cancel both cards, and re-assess what I can do next.

          • +1

@zan5hin: Good luck. As I said, its tightened. Doesn't make it impossible nor unlikely. Just harder. So the risk is higher. It was inevitable.

Point churners are less than 2% of credit card applications from Jun-Oct numbers. We're a tiny market. The crackdown is less on us. Its on high debt people.

We just look like them when averaged out.

        • I applied for one in September (nab qantas) and just applied on 2nd Dec (Citi Premier) I do agree with what you're saying however I've been 2/2 after July so far.

Have previously applied last one in March and a salary package in June.

I do have a 4 digits credit score though for comparison.

          • @starburstyellow: how do you get your credit score up. my credit scores been the same for the past 2 years even though all my credit cards are paid on time

            • @poormansfriedchicken: Good question. Mine steadily went up itself. Never defaulted, apply 3-4 each year with only one rejection (because I stupidly said I was ok fixed term contact until few more months but it gets extended all the time)To be honest about 9 years ago my score was about 680+. It's never dipped below that since.

        • +1

Pretty sure electricity has credit checks. I recently got rejected from Energy Australia for their gas.

    • There is a solution better than a spreadsheet, that I use now.

An account at https://www.rwrds.com.au/account/history allows you to keep a card history. It will also tell you the exact date you can re-apply.

This is how I discovered, that I could apply for ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum, and get bonus points even though I already had ANZ Rewards Black this year.

They even have a leaderboard and I'm in the top 100 points earners who track cards on the site, lol.

      • +13

Ah yes, storing a complete list of your financial history on a random website sounds like a great idea

    • +1

I've been smashing them every three to four months since end 2019. Think you're right though, its just more stringent now and harder for us churners.

I mean we all saw this happening in the USA over a year ago but now it's finally caught up to us here in Australia. Hate it, but have to figure out other ways like you say grocery shopping or insurance to take the place of churning…

    • +1

You can apply for credit cards as much as you want if you have the cashflow, assets and low debt to support your applications. I’ve done 11 successful applications this calendar year and 3 were in November. I’ve run out of good credit card churn options.

        • +1

I was really surprised too by all three of the November applications going through without any questions. But not everyone will have the same financial situation that gets you through the door without any further probing.

What I’ve worked out is that none of the banks I’ve applied with this year have a credit decisioning model that screens out churners.

          • @Chris892: Didn’t know banks had a decision model to screen out churners. I’m looking for my next 3 in December. Will let you know how I go.

          • @Chris892: The only ones I suspect screen out churners are CBA and Bendigo group. Don't know how Amex are these days, but they've clearly curbed churning with their long exclusion period.

      • For info how many years have you been doing it at this rate?

  • +3

    ANZ offer is better

    • Are you able to link which one you are talking about please?

  • Min 15k limit by the look

  • +2

St George UI is absolutely atrocious. Also can't upload a PDF without it crashing. SHORT

    • It's better than BOQ… Silver linings.

    • Same here, took a few tries during my application

  • I applied for a bank of melbourne card a few months ago and it was instantly declined. Should I apply for one through St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA so quickly?

    • There’s every chance you’ll be instantly decline again.

  • Yeah as above the glory days are gone. I am seeing this trend to increase the waiting period. Nab is 18 months. Always check the fine print.
No government transations federal, state or local is also a bit annoying when its rates time.

The other thing I see is the waiting period to award the points. Usually 3 months but sometimes Ive had to chase the bank.

    Definetely keep a spreadsheet.

Still worth it in my mind. I calculate 80k Qantas points at $800, so if the fee is less than half that $400 still good, depending on how you spend the points.

I go in thinking I'm going to get 1/4 priced domestic and 1/2 priced international economy.

    • +1

No need for a spreadsheet. Just register with Illion which is the credit agency that banks refer to and they have upto to date your credit score and all your credit card closing date recorded on there.

      • True but it can take a few months to update accurately

  • Qantas FF trumps this

TBH though Qantas cards are pretty poor value atm, very few decent deals.

    • +1

TBH Qantas awards redemption is a shocker right now. It’s not even worth collecting Qantas points as their business award seat is literally non existent.

      • +2

*sorry shouldve clarified ANZ's QFF deal trumps this.
But completely agree. I have 600k sitting there and no flights to redeem them on. How good!

Although I did drop a whole 20k on a flight to bali. Barely made a dent in it

        • Yeah the benefits are more with domestic, last minute economy, and some partner airlines.

        • +2

          Yeah it's a farce.
With the mess Alan Joyce and the incompetent board made of Qantas, we're lucky the programme even exists at all! They treat their customers so badly. Flagship carrier turned laughing stock of corporate Australia.

      • Yea it depends on what level you are in QFF too. Gold and above is easier to snag business seats since they get a few weeks ahead of everyone else.
As always you will need to keep an eye on them and book them almost 12months in advanced.
