      • Thanks. Q: when i try to login with an old optus account (6 years) i wont work and it says i need to contact them to update. Im assuming im ok to just ask HN to create a new Optus account using a different email and ignore the old one…?

        • Not 100% sure about the account issue. I don't see why you can't make a new one with a different email.
          Best to check with them

    • +1

They should to sign you up for a new number if you request but depends on who is serving you if they are being a prick and it isn't worth wasting time arguing basically.

      • +1

Yeah, worst case scenario and they don't budge. Pop into woolies, coles, officeworks and grab a $2 sim, then pop back and and say ok, i've changed my mind and i'll port in my number, looks like a great deal :D

  • Just sharing my experience. I went to the first Harvey Norman (Auburn/Lidcombe) was told it had to be a port in number, and can't be a new number. When they tried to put my application through my credit check failed.

Thought I'd try a different HN (North Ryde) today and was offered a new number, but I decided to port my number anyway. This salesperson asked a few more questions during the credit check and it passed.

So not sure why it was such a hassle for my first attempt. I was told that I would get the phone in 2-3 weeks due to low stock.

    • +1

Considering it's already a long drive to my nearest Harvey Norman, if they don't let me get a new number I'll just be transferring my PAYG Amaysim plan. I can do that, I imagine. Then port straight back over.

      • yeah, port-in to get the deal, then can port back out

    • I did it there too! Did U ask about the stock availability and volume?

      • North Ryde? nah I didn't, guess we'll find out tomorrow if we get the call.
When did you sign up for the plan?

        • Yeah, I did it on Saturday. The salesperson said might be Friday for Bay

          • @eminemkh: yea also went for the 128GB Bay today (Wednesday)
I tried to sign up on Saturday at Lidcombe and failed.
Let us know if you do get yours by Friday.

            • @lukits01: Called them twice, finally confirmed ready tomorrow

              • @eminemkh: How did you go? I called was told mine still 2 weeks away.

I am a current Optus customer on $49, 40GB M2M. Here is my experience.

    • Went into HN Aspley store yesterday (Brisbane)
    • Applied for the deal with a new phone number
    • In and out in 15mins max
    • Received confirmation email (approx. 3hrs later)
    • Engaged Optus chat
    • Told them I wanted my current number changed onto the new plan
    • Optus said that can't be done, so I cancelled the new number/service
    • Optus said I will need to pay the cancellation fee (no problems!)
    • Optus then offered a $10 discount on my current $49/m M2M for 12 months
    • I agreed, now on $39/m 40GB with a P8P for the next 12 months

    This is the way.

    • Lol nice job!

What are you going to do with your old number?

      • +2

The discount is on the old number.

        New one got cancelled.

        • They confirmed you don't have to pay the ~800 cancellation fee for the new number?

          • @Duff5000: I think you were meant to reply to @Joe Armstrong comment instead of mine.

            • @CodeXD: I guess the confusion is becuase you answered for the other person ;)

          • @Duff5000: Still have to pay the cancellation fee. New P8P on a reduced monthly plan, happy days.

            • -1

@Joe Armstrong: So pay the 830 to cancel and get the phone. Keep paying $39 a month for 40gb?

How is that a good deal?

You might as well just keep the $69 p/m.
35 of that pays off your 830 over 2 years. The other 35 covers the plan with more data than you swapped to.

It sounds like you have just made it more expensive up front, more in total and lowered your data.

              • @Duff5000: They said they tried to move their existing phone number to the new plan but the Optus rep said it can't be done.

              • @Duff5000: Not really. I wanted the phone not the plan.

Selling my P7P for $600 to go towards the cancellation fee. ($828 - $600 = $228 out of pocket)

Got an additional $10 off my bill for the next 12 months.

Actually came away better than expected.

        • And they did not charge you 828? Amazing!

  • I noticed this on one of my receipts yesterday at HN.
    GOOGLE PIXEL 8 PRO 256GB Qty 1 Price -$1,481.00

Wonder if that's their buy price ?

    • +1

Could be what Optus pay them for the contract as part of the deal.seems more likely than cost.

Fun fact: the cost price used to be written directly on the price label at harvies. You just had to read a string of numbers backwards to see it.

      • I wonder why they dont have any clause to payback for the device if people terminate early. 828 is not 1481.

      • If so, then HN would use that to cover their cost giving away the handset I guess.

    • +1

Sounds right. My salesperson's manager said something about manually reducing the price by $11x.xx.

      $1599 - $1481 = $118.

It wouldn't all be funded by Optus. They're offering a $350 HN gift card if you buy the phone without the plan, so there's likely some kickbacks direct from Google too.

  • -7

Scammy question. If I get the phone in my hand and then "discover" that Optus doesn't work where I live (which it doesn't, but their coverage map shows it as outdoors and patchy), would I stand any chance of getting early termination fees waived if I brought up the ombudsman or something? Happy to go all out here

    • I can't imagine you'll get away with that. You can try, but that's not really how this works.

    • +4

So you pretty much want a free phone? Bit greedy I think. Why not be happy to pay the early termination fee which is already a pretty good price for a brand new pixel 8 pro…

      • -5

More than happy to pay the $800 or whatever, also more than happy to push a few boundaries if I can, it's OzBargain. Every single person taking up this deal with the intention to cancel is greedy by your definition because $828 is well below cost for Optus/HN and they're losing money. Guess people should just be happy to buy some discounted gift cards or even pay RRP for a brand new pixel 8 pro or whatever

    • Not sure if they have changed this in the recent years but scammer answer is yes but you'll be wasting alot of time and most likely won't be waived.

Need to have extremely poor coverage, show that the telco isn't willing to address it and that the telco was not showing their coverage accurately when you signed up. (If the telco has maintenance or whatever it's already considered trying to address the issue)

Source: mate moved to a rural area had piss poor reception took going back and forth for ages before anything happened. Had to prove he had no reception for a majority of the time.

  • +1

Anybody know if we can call up HN and ask them to hold a phone? I believe they have a 7 day hold period but not sure if that will work for pre-orders.

    • Yes you can definitely call them and ask. Worst case they'll say no.

      • +1

Yeah, called em up, all good. They held it for me. They told me about the Optus deal over the phone too, so at least I know my store is aware of it.

  • Has anyone received any email or text for collection tomorrow ? I was anticipating to receive the notification today , so far nothing . The sales rep told me the phone will be ready on 12th. Now I am doubtful that HN will be able to allocate one for tomorrow. :( I ordered mine on Monday morning , P8Pro 256G Porcelin

    • Nothing here yet.

    • I did mine on Saturday, nothing yet

    • My store reckons they'll be arriving this afternoon, so perhaps worth calling them up and asking in a few hours?

      • I just called mine, they said it's either not arrived or has arrived but hasn't been added into the system yet. He seemed to think it will be there tomorrow though.

        • It'll be there tomorrow then

    • Ordered my partner and I one yesterday. I got Obsidian and she got Bay, the rep reckons I won't get the Obsidian until early/mid next week and the Bay could be another 2-3 weeks!

    • Ordered Saturday white 128Gb, HN called today 4:50pm saying it'll be ready to pick up tomorrow morning.

      This is HN Gordon (NSW).

  • -1

Any idea if you have to have the pre-order in today, or can you still get the deal tomorrow/on the weekend?

    • Offer available in store only until 19th October 2023.

      • yeah, i saw that. Just seems odd that you can pre-order something when its available…

        • +1

          The deal doesn't mention preordering.

  • -3

So I'm just wondering why the number of upvotes for this isn't higher. Pixel 8 Pro the best phone of 2023 sorry Apple and Samsung fanboys beaten and it's $828???

You should rename this buy the pixel 8 pro and get $871 in cash!

    • Many may not even realise this is happening. The title of the deal is understandably for the plan itself; not the cancellation option.
Also, far too many people have the "ermahgerd green bubbles" mindset.

    • +2

It probably isnt the best phone of the year…..

Half price brand new release may well be one of the best deals of the year though. The title doesn't to the deal justice really hence the low number of votes.

      • +1

Personally I love a good OzB hidden gem. This is one of those deals that most OG OzB lurkers will get their eyes on. Sometimes less visible deals remain active the longest.

  • +2

Howdy all, long-time lurker first time posting. Created an account to give everyone a heads-up about stock in my experience.

I went to sign up for this deal today at Harvey Norman Alexandria and was turned away. The sales rep claimed they have over-exhausted their stock and won't be selling any more plans at this store. I then went to Moore Park which was the other store closest to me and thankfully I was able to get the plan there. The sales reps claimed they had about 10 people come from Alexandria today as they were turned away there. They also think they won't be taking any more orders after tomorrow at that store.

However, the sales reps at Moore Park were very patient and helpful. I had some ancient account and they couldn't sign me up so we had to do it manually over the phone with an Optus rep. I was able to get a new number without any sort of pushback which was great. Unfortunately, they couldn't confirm if mine would be available tomorrow.

Waiting for my phone in hand before I cancel.

    • questions re your account issue - did they find your old account due to your email being the same, or based on your name/id number etc? Just wondering if its best to lead with a new email to avoid this, or if it wont matter and they base your "account" on other means…

      • I had issues still as the drivers licence came up as already on 2 accounts.

      • Initially, they asked if I had a previous account with them at any point and I said I did, most likely almost 10 years ago now. They checked my current email and mobile and nothing came up as an active account with them. Once we filled out all the forms, it failed due to the details existing already so that's when we did it manually over the phone with the Optus rep.

        • Yup I checked an old accnt yesterday, whilst I've not had anything to do with Optus for over a decade I was able to log in to my old accnt, wasn't to happy to find that.

  • +1

Signed up at Mt Gravatt in Brisbane. Was very easy to do, took maybe 15mins max from walking into the store and walking out, paying the extra $100 for the 256gb version. Sales person didn't even mention plan cancellations or deals. Got a new number and SIM. Cashier on check out commented that LOTS of people have signed up already. Waiting for the call (hopefully tomorrow) to pick up the phone.

  • Any way to trade in my Galaxy S23 to reduce the price further?

    • +1

Just sell it to one of those refurb mobs. Mobile monster iirc?

  • +12

    Hi all,

Just thought I'd let people know how it went for me. Walked in and went straight to the phone section where I approached one of the staff and told them I wanted to get the Pixel 8 Pro Optus deal for $69/month.

He asked me straight away whether I wanted to port a number across or if I wanted a new number. I told him I wanted a new number and he said "okay come and have a seat" in a resigned sort of way, as if he knew exactly what was going on. I think this question gave away that I was going to cancel.

He was nice though, gave me no troubles and got me all set up in about 10 minutes. He knew exactly why I was there but neither of us said anything about the cancellation etc. He just did his job, got me set up, I paid the $100 to upgrade to 256GB and off I went.

At one point in the process, he gave me a list of phone numbers and asked which I wanted to choose as my new number and I took a few seconds to pretend to choose between them and then said "yeah doesn't matter give me whatever" and I saw a faint smile from him for a second as if to say "ofcourse you don't care, you're gonna cancel this as soon as you walk out".

I did try to ask him if the phones came in already and try to sneak my way into getting it today but he told me they weren't here yet and I would likely be able to pick up tomorrow. He also said mentioned that many people have been getting this deal. Seems like the employees all know about the cancellation trick but as long as you don't get a store or employee who just want to be a pain in the backside it should be very straightforward, because there's nothing they can do about it.

      excellent write-up.

      • +2

That was my thought too. I'm writing a book at the moment, this guy would be a natural.

    • This mirrors my experience exactly! Was the store the one at Booval by any chance?

  • I signed up this morning, also had to do it over the phone due to some old account with Optus. Rep said all 256GB regardless of colour now are on backorder 2-3week wait. Store I went to Harvey Norman @ Domayne Nth Ryde.

    • +1

Probably a tactic to keep you holding on the account with Optus.

  • +1

Preordered this deal last week Thursday (HN in WA). Just got a call that my 256GB Bay is ready for collection tomorrow:)

    • Saturday order here waiting…

    • Sunday pre-order here and no call so far. I rang this morning and their stock allocation hadn't arrived. Expected tomorrow morning at the latest but wouldn't say anything more.

    • +1

      Same here

  • A couple of Qs from someone who went thru the process today

    1. I processed my Optus cancellation this arvo and received a ref no. The Optus app does not have an outstanding $828 liability - could anyone advise if this is normal and when I should expect a liability raised?

    2. As I have cancelled the phone number with Optus, do I need to advise HN of an alternative contact number or will they normally advise customers of the stock by email?

Thanks in advance for your advice OzB

    • +1
      1. From what I've heard, you can cancel straight away and should get the bill within a day.

      2. If you provided them an email I imagine they'll contract you via the email. I doubt they'd use your new number anyway considering numbers take a period of time to activate, so there would be no way for them to contact you.

      • +1

Any idea when the bill is payable? Is it $828 to be paid within a few weeks?

        • +1

Depends on the billing cycle. I cancelled on Monday and have yet to receive a final bill

        • I'd say within the first month, but I've got no idea. Won't be doing this til the 16th.

    • +2

      Thing to note here

      1. There is a different account section on their homepage and it's Optus my account not my optus app. You can see the cancelled sim here.

      2. During sign up they would've asked for your best contact number.

    • +2

I called HN today to update my number as I noticed the new number was on my receipt.

  • I'm at Harvey Norman. They are saying phones won't be available for a minimum of 2 - 4 weeks. Probably more. Stock is sold out.

  • +7

Review on Youtube hasn't got me convinced to get the phone and the Google Photos AI features doesn't really appeal to me and there are some cons to relying on Google Photos uploads to improve photos and videos (upload/download time & storage cost). Camera and battery life are the two most important things for me and it doesn't seem like it's any better than a Samsung or Apple due to lackluster hardware. Will wait for the Samsung s24.

    • its competitors are pixel 7 pro and pixel 8, not apple and Samsung.

      • +2

I get there are people out there that stay within the Pixel range but at the end of the day it's still an android phone and to the mass market it certainly does compete with Samsung at the very least considering the retail price it's now in.

        • Will add for the price of this phone through this deal it's certainly a great choice still :)

          • +1

@happyadventurer: I'm buying this phone for the price, not for anything else. This is how the late nexus and early pixel used to be. Mid range price for high-mid range hardware with a fantastic camera.

    • I don't understand why reviewers compare it to the last gen phone. Not relatable for most people. Surely most people would be upgrading every 3 years.

      • +5

Agree, gone are the days where each new year was a huge step up but in this case the Pixel 8 Pro has had a price jump to the same price as the latest Apple/Samsung. I've got a s21 at the moment and doesn't look like I'm missing out on much compared to the Pixel 8 Pro. The big Youtube reviewers will be able to upload their reviews soon when the phone is officially released so we'll see what they say.

My partner has an iPhone 13 Pro and everytime I watch a recorded video on her phone I'm honestly blown away by how much better iPhone does video. Not to mention they have a much easier time uploading high quality to social media. I think Samsung is getting really close with matching Apple on video recording so fingers crossed for the s24. Otherwise I'll probably grab the next cheap deal on a s23.
