I signed up yesterday and this morning the 1st bill was already raised this morning so the effective cancellation cost is $862.50 ($793.50 pro-rata cancellation cost + $69 first bill). You can however chose to cancel just before the end of the first month and it will be the same cost as you have already paid for the first month.

    • Same here. Got my first bill today following yesterday's signup. Due in 14 days.

    • +1

Isn't the max bill $828 and not $862.50 per contract terms? Couldn't you raise it with the Optus rep?

      • +2

No, the max cancellation fee is $828. In this case, the first month is $69 and the cancellation fee is $793.50, which is less than the max.

        • Yep just trying to make sure old mate doesn't get stung by Optus for the extra.

          • @xdigger: Cheers guys! Can confirm the cancellation fee is $793.50

Via Optus chat I got the plan reduced to $52.10 for 12 months. (10% off per month and $10 discount)

Can't find a better deal out there for the same cost.

            • +1

@Bond-007WA: Does that mean you need to pay the $793.50 cancellation fee and continue with optus for $52.10 per month for 12 months?

              • +1

@CodeXD: Sorry I wasn't clear. I didn't need to pay any cancelation or change fees.

The $52.10 could only be applied from the next month/cycle. So, I'm up for $69 in 14 days and then down to $52.10.

Keen to hear if anyone has done any better!

                • @Bond-007WA: Not bad. Did you use the financial situation as a reason?

                  • @Whatisthatvelvet: Yep I did. Didn't need to apply any pressure at all. Was just polite and asked for the best offer they could give. After a chat with their supervisor that's what they came back with.

                • +1

                  @Bond-007WA: So you need to pay $69 + $52.10x23 in total ?

                  • @yht: The discounted price is for 12 months, so more like:

                    1 x $69
                    12 x 52.10
                    11 x $69

                • +1

@Bond-007WA: I think I made the mistake of trying so late at night. I'll try again at some point

            • @Bond-007WA: just want to know if you only received the plan reduction / discount after you wanted to go through with the cancellation?

              • +1

                @crazian: That's correct @CodeXD.

Received the discount after speaking with Optus chat. Why not try and get the best deal possible?

Queried why the discount starts from the 2nd cycle tonight. Apparently a billing issue. The person apologised and gave me $15 off the first bill. Score!

                Now it's:
                1 X $54
                12 X $52.10
                11 X $69

    • Are you buying to sell?

    • Nice so you just need to know your billing cycle and cancel just before cycle finishes….

I think I will do that.

But how easy is it to cancel the contract? Heard long wait on phone call

      • Port the number out to a cheap SIM. Should be heaps quicker

  • Just got this deal and ported number across. Rep brought up and mentioned how it's a good deal even though you can only cancel after 3 months. Is this the case or he's said to keep comission or something?

    • +8

3 months is only if you want the rep to get commission. You can walk out of the store and cancel in the parking lot.

      • Thanks mate

      • +8

3 months is only if you want the rep to get commission

After lying like that to the customer, what customer is going to give a rats about the reps commission.

        • My thoughts too, though no matter how nice they are I'm not keen to pay an extra $207 just so they get a few bucks.

        • +3

          this is OzBargain not OzRepCommission

      • +3

Gotta show them who's boss by getting the Optus chat to cancel whilst the Harvery Norman salesperson is putting the deal through lol

  • Auburn HN at 10:30am already had a dude signing up. the sales person didnt allow me to get a new number and I was fine with that. He just straight up asked if im there for the pixel deal and got right into business. no explanation whatsoever, just got my details and pushed it into the computer.
Got the black one. paid $100. hopefully getting it on Thursday.

on another note, Optus 5G is pretty good for where i live. 5G in underground car park.
Will try for a month to see if reception is good or not then decide if port out or stay and ask for more discount from chat with the 'financial difficulty' excuse.

  • Cancelled. Had to pay the additional $69 for one month

    • Did you cancel same day or the following?

      • About an hour later. Same day

    • I think any cancellation after 24 hours get slugged a full month of bill.

      • In my case I cancelled it on next day but within 24 hrs but 1st month bill was already generated on the first night itself before the cancellation

    • Have you received your phone though? I thought it's not yet available

    • What's the total cost for you?

  • For those who did not cancelled contract on the first day but cancelled it on next day or after - have you been successful in getting 1st month bill waived or able to get refund based on pro-rata basis? If yes, how you achieved it? TIA

    • +1

Yes, with hours of wasted time and effort

  • +1

I'm curious how I even pay my $828 bill since Optus has terminated my account. 🤷‍♂️

    • +1

bill via email with payment options/link to pay

      • Ah thanks for clearing that up. Have you received yours yet or do that come after collection of phone?

        • +2

Optus told me id get it at the end of the first billing period

  • My Receipt says balance owing $1,700. Bit weird, hopefully it's all good as I'm going to cancel right now.

    • That is odd for sure.

    • Sounds like the sales guy selected the wrong Pixel in their sales portal. There was the optus offer pixel $0 and regular pre-order $1699. But i'm sure it'll all work out

      • +2

My guy let me see the screen the entire transaction. There was no special one to select on his sales computer. He just selected plan, put the new plan's type, mobile and SIM numbers in, selected Pixel 8 Pro 256GB OBS, overrode the full retail price to $100 (256GB model upgrade fee) with a manager's authorisation code which he knew without asking anyone.

I walked out with a tax invoice for $100 fully paid though, but like universe stated, I'm sure it'll be fine once you mention the deal. Might just take a sec to fix.

        • Mine had a manager help him because he was new, but they definitely selected a special entry for the Pixel. It came to something like $117.xx and he had to manually discount to $0.

They also told Optus it was the "gift card plan"; nothing specific to it being a Pixel. I note in store they had a $69 plan advertised with a $500 gift card, so I suspect it's the same thing in the backend with HN getting say $800 from Optus to cover the gift card and some profit, but in this case they apply the whole $800 to the phone that they are getting at a very low cost from Google.

    • What store did you go to?

    • Is your plan the $69 gift card plan? Or normal $69 plan?

  • Which stores have people pre-ordered from already in Melbournes East (Im trying to avoid stores where countless Ozb members have been flocking to to try and avoid not getting one on launch day). Assuming Chadstone has been hammered - how about Nunawading?

    Thanks

    • +1

Does it matter though? They move the devices where they need them. They wont allocate 20 pixels to a store that has 1 pre-order.

      • +1

This is HN we are talking about…….From my experience with them they are reluctant to move stock between stores and the quantities of stock ordered was sorted before the pre-orders….

        • Yeah i used to work there lol i doubt they have enough to fill the bay preorders anyway so its anyone's guess at this point

    • I have been told the stock level is plenty enough for the launch day today.

    • Looks like you're right… someone from whirlpool

Just got a call from Harvey Norman (Alexandria) this morning advising that I missed out on the first batch of 256gb pixel 8 pros and will need to wait an additional 3 to 4 weeks.
I also called the next closest Harvey Norman at Broadway and same thing.

I also see your post a few comments down in there too lol

  • Does anyone know when I'll get the invoice to pay the $828 from Optus? I got my plan started yesterday and cancelled yesterday itself. Just wondering when I'll get the invoice so I can be ready for it. Thank you

    • +3

It has been said many times, end of the first billing period.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14391703/redir

      • Oh yea thank you but do you know when the exact day will be? That's what I was trying to get lol

        • +2

No, depends on whether Optus has multiple defined billing periods within a calendar month (other telcos do/used to do this) and the date you signed up.

If you really want to know and it doesn't mention anything in your online account, then just ask optus. Otherwise keep an eye out on your email.

  • What date are the phones arriving?

    • 12th. Got mine a day earlier last year though so who know

      • Thanks

  • Bloody optus, tried to cancel my account, and they use the delay tactic and in the end, told me go to the shop to get it cancelled, wtf lol.

    • +2

Rep has probably already done a hundred plus cancellations today and is over it, lol.

      • +2

Imma just go get cheapy prepaid sim and churn over, lol.

    • Buy a $2 Telstra SIM and port out?

    • +2

Get a $2 SIM from a non-Optus provider and port out. They send you the final bill and don't even ring you about it. Easiest way.

      • Yup, definitely worth more than 1hr on the webchat thats for sure.

      • Isn't there a $8 or so port out fee? last time I checked with Vodafone, there was $8 fee, is it zero with Optus?

        • +1

Never paid one myself. Only ever been on Optus and Telstra postpaid though.

    • The shop? An Optus shop? HN shop?
The rep is being lazy after being forced by 1000 OzB's over the weekend to cancel contracts. Either restart the process with a new rep or buy a cheap sim and port out as others have mentioned.

      • +1

The rep thought I got it from Optus shop, so told me go back to Optus shop… anyway, going to get a cheapie $2 sim to churn over and be done with it lol.

    Can you try again??

  • +4

In and out in 10 minutes. Dude looked like he'd processed alot of them as he was lightning fast, and did it correctly as I walked out with the invoice stating no balance owing.

He went a little weird when I said new number please, but didn't try and stop the sale. Also asked how I heard about the deal. I said 'I hadn't until I walked into the store and saw the sign'. All smooth sailing.

    • +1

My transaction this morning took about the same time. Asked if I was porting in or wanted a new number. Then asked where I heard about the deal and said online. Paid the extra for the 256gb and done

    • Strange, my guy was actually relieved when I said new number. He said that's less work for him.

  • +7

For anyone who's getting offers of cheaper plans with Optus when they try to cancel, don't waste your time.

Spent over an hour with an agent who kept throwing more offers at me. Got the monthly cost down to $29 a month for 12 months.

When I was about to agree to keep my service, they drop the "you'll still need to pay your early termination fee".

So yeah, if they make any changes to your plan from $69 it will require them to cancel and recontract.

    • +1

You aren't seriously expecting optus to give you a cancellation fee of less than $828 ?
If you are you're absolutely delirious with that thinking

      • +4

        What's with the hostility?

I'm just pointing out that for the people who are getting slight discounts, it's not even worth the time. You're effectively paying more upfront for a lower data plan long term.

Pretty much always better off cancelling and buying any prepaid plan under $35 a month if your data usage allows.

      • +2

I agree, no need for that kind of talk.

If I go on the Optus chat and say I want to cancel the plan and they offer an incentive to stay, then why do I still need to pay out the cancellation fee if I accept their offer to stay?

      • I think they understood that they were altering their current plan rather than paying $828 and then starting a new 12-month plan.

      • It was my understanding (could be a mistaken understanding) that the discounted offer was to persuade customers from leaving. So slapping them with a cancellation fee and forcing into a new contract makes no sense. If that's what is happening then good luck to them, I can't see many people being persuaded with that.

        • -1

I was going to write a long reply but I'm just going to sum it up…… You're all nuts with some of the bull**** that you come up with or whinge about.

    • I am going to woolies/ coles get a $2 Telstra Sim and churn over, they just wasting your time.

      • When you get a $2 telstra sim, don't you have to buy a plan or something when you activate it?

    • Did the same thing, should've looked up your comments.

Got thrown around finance department and back, the guy was nice to offer $49 plan discounted to $35/mo and early termination fee split into 3 monthly payments and this is where I said, just cancel the service.

      • Yeah including the cancellation kills it. I get it, from their point of view it's no longer the original contract but yeah, nah!

        • +2

Funny thing was, the loyalty guy kept saying "thank you for being a loyal customer of Optus" … yup, for 4 hours!

    • I got a $10 discount added to my plan for 6 months. That shouldn't affect the contract

      • +1

Yes, to clarify, I think they can offer $10-15 a month discount to your $69 plan and it won't cause any kind of cancellation. So this is great for those who were planning to stay with Optus anyway.

What I'm saying only applies to those who were intending to cancel and may have believed that Optus could convince them to stay by offering a plan under $35 a month, but the only way they can do this is to offer a discount on a $49 plan which means they need to re-contract you (hence the cancellation fee).

        • Yeah, I'm just spewing I only got $10 off for 6 months :D

  • Can I just get a new number instead of porting my current one over? Or they don't do it anymore?

    • I did it with a new number yesterday at HN Dandenong South. So It should be fine to just get a new number.

      • +2

1pm today with new number all fine. He definitely changed his vibe when I said new number though but still sold it to me.

    • I don't think there's anything to say you can't, it's just some HN reps don't want to because they assume you'll cancel before three months and they won't get a commission. I had no problem getting a new number.

  • Bold of you to cancel your plan even before you got your phone in hands lol.
Shady Optus gonna reroute all the cancelled plan Pixel 8 to its headquarters lol

    • +2

I'm sure the last thing Optus want is bad press by screwing their customers over again. They're just trying to recoup the 10-15% of them that left last year.
