Probably worth mentioning the monthly fee is $35 per month if you don't spend that $2500 (or $4000) per month from August.

I had this card and it was really good but aside from the above:

    1. There are better bonus points offers in terms of # of QFF Points

    2. $6000 is a fair bit to spend to get the bonus points vs a lot of other cards people cycle like the ANZ frequent flyer black or NAB Qantas signature.

    • +11

Have they advised existing customers of the increase from $2500 to $4000 per month to avoid the monthly fee? I have this card and had no idea. Probably will need to cancel it if the monthly spend increases to $4000

      • +2

I have this card and have not been advised. I'll be cancelling it if the minimum spend applies to existing accounts.

        • No monthly fee* if you spend at least $2,500 on your Ultimate Awards credit card in your statement period (From 25 August 2023, you’ll need to spend at least $4,000 in your statement period to qualify for no monthly fee for that month)

          • @broomy: Just spoke to CBA - this is gonig to increase for all existing card holders!

Supposedly been advised in our online statements!

            • @broomy: That's freaking messed up. Would have never applied for this last month if it was 4k. Hopefully I can get the points around the time of the increase.

            • @broomy: They definitely haven't advised it in any statement that I've seen. Best to keep a close eye out on over the next few months…

      • Same, i'm only on my first month still. Surely if we signed up for the original terms we'd stay on $2500 spend.

Would they even be allowed to change the terms we signed on for?

      • Nothing in the fine print of my last statement, just some stuff about Dragonpass.
Was really counting on this card for some travel insurance for upcoming (quite long) trips so will be pretty pissed if they pull this on existing

      • +2

They’ve just added a new credit card, Smart Awards, with a $2k spend per month. If existing customers aren’t grandfathered in, I’m switching to this.

        • Only 0.6 QFF per $ on that one.
If existing customers aren’t grandfathered in, I’m going back to Amex.

    • So it is not being grandfathered in and the new min monthly spend will apply to everyone, not just new signups?

      • I’d also like to know!

I suppose if we aren’t notified it will mean existing accounts are grandfathered?

If not, surely they need to notify us if the minimum spend increases?

    • $6k on par with Westpac black, but with like 20k less points.

Only good if you're seriously churning and have exhausted other banks in a 1 year period.

      • After nab acquired Citi, my churn option get quite limited. You get the big 4 + amex.

        • I believe Citi offers are separate from NAB. I’ve managed to churn both without problems.

Same for Westpac and St George/BankSA. (But St George and BankSA are treated as the same bank.)

        • +1

City and Nab are 2 different companies as far as churning goes. I've done both and gotten points in the last year.

          • @jaygee: Not for much longer. NAB proposing to discontinue the Citi brand in Australia & eliminate their products.

  • How to avoid paying or is it worth paying $60/ month for Qantas points?

Because 2000 Woolworths points are worth $10 but 2000 Qantas points won't buy you gift card worth $10 for Woolworths or any other brand… ! So why pay fees to convert to Qantas points?

    • is it worth paying $60/ month for Qantas points?

It is $60 a year, not per month.

    • Per year, not per month.

      • Thanks for correcting but still is it worth paying that when point not as much worth as Woolworths?

        • +1

Qantas points are always best if you fly with them. Buying stuff is a waste.

          • +1

@Mitch889: Just good luck finding flights to redeem, international classic reward seats suck at the moment :/

            • @buckster: that's the point that they will only give out or allow use of point at time when it is off season and traffic is low otherwise they won't so what's the point to ay them that $60 / year …. at-least at costco you can find cheap product around the year anytime you go or if you pay that to amazon then you can find free delivery and deals every now and then … but with Qantas … the point has absolutely low value when you compare that to Woolworths or Coles who provides $10 for 2000 points but you can't get that same for Qantas points.

i had flybuy with NAB where nab reward points (1 point per $1 spend) get converted to 1 flybuy points but i am not now moved to CBA and also (dumb enough) to sing-up with Qantas points at $30 for first year and now realising that i won't get even 1 qantas point for every $1 spend .. lol so they are screwing you on the points and also then charge you to convert the points .. !

in real sense Qantas point has low value then Woolworths or flybuy points .. !

            • @buckster: I managed to book 3x First Class Reward seats for Qantas SIN - SYD the other day for 30th July

  • +3

I got this because it's is one of the only rewards/points cards that have no fees for international transactions. And 4K a month is like whatever; my bills, insurance, food, and booze alone will cover that easily

      • +9

Can confirm @rosebank is correct, i have this card and there's no international transaction fee

        • -2

Oh wow didn’t realise that, that’s cool but I’m still expecting the exchange rate to be lower than if you used either 28 degrees or Citibank?

          • +2

@prankster: The usual Mastercard daily exchange rate

          • @prankster: Standard MC rate

            • +1

@prankster: Complaining about negs just get you more negs, and +/- internet points are meaningless.

lol bring on the negs i don’t care geez lol

              This is the right attitude.

      • Citibank has a 3.4% int'l transaction fee

        • Is that new for Citibank now?

          • @prankster: I dunno, you mentioned Citibank so I looked it up.

        • Um what? I shouldn't use this anymore for overseas purchase?

          • @selphie: Was it zero fee previously? I read the PDS for their CCs and it says 3.4%

            • @rosebank: It was free with Citibank before when I traveled with my mate overseas and used his Citibank, let me check with him too

            • @rosebank: so i checked with friend and can see online but for the citibank transaction everyday debit card, it has free ATM international withdrawals and no international fees but can't apply for this anymore after NAB bought citibank.

              • @prankster: Cool, thanks for the update.

              • +1

                @prankster: Debit <> Credit

Citibank credit cards (then and now under NAB) are always charge fees when used overseas.
Citibank debit card (not available to apply anymore) has not charge foreign transaction fee since day 1.

      • Username checks out.

    • +4

Coles Reward Mastercard has 0 int transactional fee. Annual fee is $99 and you earn 2 flybuy points per $1 up to $3k per month. If you purchase from Coles, it is 3 points per $1.

      Here is the link:
      https://www.coles.com.au/credit-cards/rewards#offer

      • +1

Thanks for the link, never even considered a "non-bank" card. Gonna apply just for the bonus FB points, and use it for shopping at coles.

    • +1

I have the coles mc that earns FB points and has minimal yearly fee and no fx fees. ($99 or nearish that annual fee).
The cba card is good, but my regular spend earns me much more points with other cards, and coles will often halve or waive the annual fee on their card, meaning I don’t need to use it all the time, just when buying from/travelling to overseas.

Another low fee card option is Bankwest QF, some of them are relatively cheap and have no FX fee and still earn points

      • Thanks, I shop at coles and like collecting flybuys pts

  • It may have no international transaction fees but whats the Forex conversion rate like with Commbank ? Bet it's not as good as Wise

    • +14

It is the normal bank/MasterCard rate.

    • It’s generally the same or better than wise. The conversion fees are set by the scheme- visa or MC.

      • Yep. Just paid this morning with this card on AliExpress in USD and the amount charged to account in AUD is exactly same as the above link.

  • Quick question: does the 100k bonus point qualify Qantas Points Club? That should earn 2/3 of the 150k if it does.

    • +2

It's only 70k QFF points, and yes, credit card bonus points count towards PC.

      • Cheers mate

    • +1

      Yes! It does.

    • How can you tell which points count towards it? My last 10k points from green tier didn’t count!!

      • I might be wrong but any bonus points that is not personal credit card related will not qualify. I had a Amex Qantas Biz Card and none of the point counts.
Another way to earn is by flying, there might be other partners tho.

        • Points club points are from everything EXCEPT flying unfortunately.

I think there's now a cap on how much you can get from CC sign ups? I forget what the T&C's changed to

    • +3

Don't you run out of cards to churn? It seems reasonable if you cancel as soon as you get the bonus points.

    • +6

If you spend $2.5k/month (some of which on Intl purchases and the rest at Supermarkets) and like easy to use travel insurance it's a pretty bloody good card that in the 16 months I've had it has cost me absolutely nothing. Not to mention that I've saved $135 this year through their offers.

      And transferred 115k Velocity points.

      • How do you transfer to Velocity? Were you referring Qantas points instead?

    • What card would you recommend with no international transaction fees? Because I buy a lot of shit online and spend a lot when I travel.

      • Yours is about the only use case that makes some sense (lots of international spend). I would recommend Coles Rewards but saw that someone already mentioned that and that you've applied :)

My points remains though that for anyone spending $2500+ every month, there are hundreds of thousands of points for the taking, every year. I target at least 600k per year for net zero fees or close to. I'm not stuffing around ensuring to spend $2500 each month to avoid fees and for a paltry 70k QFF points.

        • I'm not using this card for QFF points, but the Awards Progam where I get 3 points for online shopping which makes up for the majority of my spending, and 2 points for groceries, food, petrol etc. I recently redeemed points for gift cards to buy my mum a Miele dishwasher because her's broke down, and I couldn't fix it myself because it's impossible to source Miele parts. But there was a promotion that ended last month which included 10 year warranty on Miele dishwashers

I have plenty of QFF points that I only use for domestic travel because I prefer Singapore for international, who are not a Qantas partner.

Also, CBA Awards is unlimited points that don't expire, and a max of $10k per statement period before they reduce the points. I don't need to stuff around to hit $4k a month, and I'm too lazy to churn. I don't even have a points target for awards or QFF, i think the amount I'm getting is more than enough. And with my new Coles MC, I can get 2x flybuys pts, but I have yet to compare it with CBA awards because I think I'm getting 2 points already. If the dollar value of the FB points is worse than the awards points, I'll just take the bonus flybuys points and peace out after a year. The main reason I applied for the Coles card is zero int'l fees,

      • Revolut for both.

      • I've had the basic coles mastercard with no annual fee. It has no foreign transaction fees and has saved me buckets overseas over the years.

    • +1

I agree. Though I’ve stopped churning qff as they are so hard to use lately.

  • would they waive the fee if you have a home loan with them?

    • Keen to know too!

      • Save your time. I called and waited for 50 minutes on the call, and they rejected in a minute. Reasons are the applicant must be a brand new customer, and the card is not in the wealth package so the fee won't be waived.

  • +1

    Rejected :(

    • same result.

    • +1

Got rejected straight up last month. Just realised that my credit score is currently locked. Either that or my complicated income/expense (renting but have only one investment property). Dunno

  • +2

I got this card just for my European holiday.

    1. I like CommBank banking, even after I've paid it tells me the amount basically live.
    2. I got a bonus 20k QFF for not holding a QFF card for previous 12 months.
    3. I've spent $6000-9000 while overseas, gaining 1.2 QFF per dollar.(Still OS)
    4. Free travel insurance saved me money

I will probably cancel in a month, doubt I hit the minimum spend every month as I'm trying to save later this year… but if you travel often and/or buy international it's a great card.

Altogether I should earn 70k + 20k + 10-15k points for 3 months. It worked out well for me.

There's a lot of good cards atm tho, NAB has a Velocity with 1k spend, $95 annual fee and 60k points.

Very easy to hit the spends, without stressing.

    • What's the int'l transaction fee for NAB cards?

    • -1

Check your points, says it’s up to 1.2 points per $. Not all transactions give 1.2 points.

      • +2

This card pays 1.2 points for international transactions and he said he used it while overseas, so his calcs are correct. I did the same 2 months ago, got the card, used during a trip overseas, got the bonus points plus 1.2 points per dollar spent plus free travel insurance, then cancelled it when got back home. This card is one of the worse in Australia unless you travel a lot or spend a lot of money internationally.

        • +1

Yep this is a card that is worth picking up ahead of an overseas trip and then cancelling imo. Particularly now with the increased threshold coming of $4,000 spend per month to avoid monthly fee.

          • @Nuggets: Pick up the card 3 weeks ago for a trip. Absolutely loved the no transactions fee. Rate are good. And probably like you said. Cancelled it when I get home. 4k a month is not do-able. Only if they let me pay mortgages with it but sadly no.

  • Worth noting that these guys are clowns to deal with. I did my ID check on the last deal and they told me all was fine. I then waited for them to send the card. Nothing after 2 weeks so I recontacted them and was told the application had timed out and I would need to reapply. They tried to reverse the credit check but that failed. I didn't bother reapplying.

  • +1

This time, this card has 2 complimentary lounge passes (DragonPass). Previously, it was paid access (LoungeKey)- you have to pay out of your pocket.

    • Just noticed this, I assume it’s a once off not annual ?

      • +1

        It's annual in the T&C.

To gain access to participating airport lounges, you must register your Ultimate card on the Mastercard Travel Pass app or mastercardtravelpass.dragonpass.com, generate a membership QR code and present this along with your boarding pass for validation. You will have two complimentary lounge visits every year, each visit can be used by either the primary cardholder or guest. Guest must always be accompanied by the primary cardholder and cannot use the access on their own.

  • +13

no hard feeling to OP, but negging this deal to bring to the attention of everyone that the minimum spend to waive monthly fees will increase in August 2023 so this is actually a reduction in benefits, depending on how you value the points vs the spending commitment, this deal is not worth the credit check:

From 25 August 2023, you’ll need to spend at least $4,000 in your statement period to qualify for no monthly fee for that month)

this is significant as I have this card for a while now and only ever spend more than 4k when i have major unexpected purchases despite the only credit card i own (paid all my bills through it).

airport lounge is not that great of an option as I never use it… at some point the available airport lounges in Sydney were actually closed/under renovation…

surely if CBA knows people are struggling they wouldn't really increase the minimum spending as everyone is trying to cut cost due to their mortgage repayments!

    • -2

Yes $4k per month is prohibitive, but it’s also worth noting that if your landlord allows you to pay rent through DEFT BPAY you can do that fee free with this card through Beem, and will earn points on the payment. That should go a long way towards hitting the $4k per month, or even just hitting the $6k spend if you plan on churning.

      • +2

is this Beem thing still on? i thought it expired… would have been nice to pay my body corporate without any fees

        • +1

Far out looks like it stopped working a week ago. I take it back :(

          • @recession1: I commented on one of the existing forum posts about this that mine is working again, but somehow it's not for others. Paid rent with DEFT Bpay via cc, tried both the day before yesterday and yesterday and both payments were successful
(is that essentially any different from a body corp payment or other bill payment though? or does using a deft code make it ok?)

            • @sakurakiks: I tried today and yesterday to pay rent through DEFT and it hasn’t worked

    • But why do you have to negative this, it's in the CBR conditions, so no surprises?

indeed if people are struggling, they shouldn't get this card.

Personally, I think this is a shitty deal, but probably works for high-spenders.

      • -1

like i mentioned above, just negging to bring the attention to everyone here…

this post does meet the criteria of a deal…

        • -1

That's not how you use neg.

    • What are the better cards to churn at the moment? Im looking for a card to start my churning journey on and this one looks like the best sign up bonus and cheap fee, I cant find one better than this. Im inexperienced though so I might be looking in the wrong places.

edit: wouldnt this be a good churn card since I can save up a few expenses and get the $4k spend for 1 month and then cancel it? So I'd get my 70k points for $30?
