Hi All,

Just came back from Tesla in Chadstone. The Model Y has a $3000+. price drop. Just started today at lunch time.
Went for a test driver and when I came back, the sales guy said he just received an email confirming a price drop on the Model Y.
Being a true OZBARGAIN guy, I bought one. Took all of 5 mins to order. 2 - 4 month deliver time.
If anyone thinking of getting one, now is a good time before they have massive back orders I guess.

NT $73570

More expensive, lower range, less efficient, less features.

    • Who makes their battery? LG Chen? CATL?

What is the battery chemistry? NMC? LFP?

These are the questions people should be asking when purchasing an EV

  • thanks op, was looking at ev's and this one in particular, due to fed's new fbt exemption

    • damn, still can't get (in nsw) a model y +20" wheel upgrade +enhanced autopilot without exceeding the stamp duty threshold grr

      • +2

        get autopilot after delivery

      • +1

Enhanced autopilot is useless but you can add it after you purchase so don't include it in the original purchase

        • enhanced autopilot is still $5K, even as a post purchase addon?
awesome to know thanks guys people :)

  • +1

Can confirm they are doing this on existing orders too. Just got the email

  • +1

    price in title

    OW price matched!!!! got 10

  • Are these Tesla cars any good? Meaning are there a lot of common issues with them since they are made in china I was a little concerned.

I hate a car that has rattles

    • +9

The ones we get in AU (made in china) has the same quality as good Korean cars. All of the "Teslas quality is baaaad" are US issue and not related to Chinese-built ones.

      • +1

Yer well American cars are not that great either with it comes to quality

So nothing like a German made car

        • +2

No these are probably better than most German cars of similar price. I mean even Ford Focus is made in Germany now and yet has loads of QC issues. Doesn't mean what it did a decade ago.

          • @onlinepred: Ahh ok so buying a Benz, BMW or Aldi petrol is not what it use to be?

Sorry just trying to figure it all out. I use to own a Holden Craptiva so I’m very concerned when buying cars now hahaha

            • +2

@Twisty: Haha, yea no definitely not. Entry Benz, Audi and BMW are far worse than they ever used to be. And VAGs aren't the same either. Still great, but not the pride labor of detail they used to be.

              • @onlinepred: Ahh ok I was always thinking they were all made the same across the board just price difference on engines, suspension and features etc but when it came to the quality of the cars build it was all the same

          • @onlinepred: ford focus isn't $70k, let's compare apples

        • Bull$hit but its about the fool and his money which part ways sooner or later

We have loved our model Y. Have done almost 8000kms on it already.

Tech is fantastic. Build quality was perfect for ours.

There is a minor rattle above the headliner that i discovered on a really rough road, But haven't heard it since.

    • +7

In this case, you WANT the Chinese built one. The quality of the Chinese built cars is much improved over the prior US built cars.

My 2021 Model 3 (Chinese built) is solid. Way better built than my Subaru.

      • -1

I was curious whether all the reliability and build quality comments were just the internet's current hate-boner for Elon or not.

      • I think a lot of the American Tesla problems are from the Fremont factory in California, which Tesla has outgrown. I think the Texas factory will be better.

    • +6

Lol where have you been, China is now the Japan of the 1990s. Chinese built Teslas have better build quality than their American counterparts.

My friend picked up a Tesla Y from Tasmania about a month ago and saved quite a bit due to stamp duty exemption to eligible EVs over there. He said there appeared to be adequate stock levels as well as there was no waiting time. Flew over there and took it back on the ferry to Melbourne.

    • +1

Your friend is right. There was pretty much no waiting list when I purchased mine.

    • +2

i thought you'll need a Tasmania drivers license to buy a Tesla Y to qualify for the stamp duty exemption.

      • His gf lived in Tasmania. But she's been in Melb now for the last year or so… Will have to ask him how that all works

        • +1

Then the car would have to be in her name. Again you'll need to have a Tassy driver license to qualify.

        • +1

What if you have a friend in tas and have your driver license address transferred over to his address? Would it be classified as changing your license to that state? OR you would need to do rigorous test all over again with the authority of the local state?
          Thanks

Update: seems do-able providing you provide utilities bill (like phone) under your name with the different address

  • Y

  • +7

Sharing for context. We ordered our Y last Aug for $72K inc of all fees in NSW. So it's hard to see this as a bargain.

    • standard range + standard 19" + without additional autopilot/fsd?

      • +2

Yes, with a view to wrap, upgrade rims aftermarket.

        • What rims are nicer than the extra $2900 20-inch option?

          • @xdigger: Meant to receive around March, so I guess we'll look after that. Also not a car/rims expert. Will be looking to improve the look at a reasonable price.

            • @KingUltra: I thought about doing aftermarket wheels but I think you will struggle to do it cheaper than the $2500 20" upgrade - even aftermarket 19" wheels with good quality tyres is gong to run you more than $2900. If you can salary package and pay pre-tax the real cost could be closer to $1,000.

  • Can I use my 1000x $100 gift cards I picked up from coles to pay for this beast. I will humbly give the staff member the remaining $2 on the last card as my tip.

    • You can probably try, and then get a visit from AFP to assist them with money-laundering enquiries ^_^

      • +3

Rocks to tesla dealership with a wheelbarrow full of $100 coles gift cards

  • Is it as good an investment as a BMW?

  • I also just received a text message regarding my upcoming model Y order. Still on the fence about committing to it though

  • How much is a super charger for home use?

    • +1

Tesla Gen 3 wall charger $750 + installation.

It charges at 11kw. Superchargers go up to 150kw

      • Do you need 3-phase in the house too to install wall charger? Thanks

  • NSW shows $71,757 drive away on the website. Is this after the discount?

    • Is that after the savings of petrol for 5 years too?

  • Does anyone else think the resale value of a Tesla is going to drop the longer it is associated with Musk? I just can't why anyone would want to be seen dead in a car brand associated with him.

    • +3

it's a car, not twitter thread. As far is it goes, resale value haven't dropped at all - bought M3 a year ago for 60k, cheapest one with same mileage on carsales is ~68k now.

      • +2

2019 M3's are dipping into the <$55k now. So they are getting cheaper that's for sure.

        • +2

Sure, there are no miracles - it would get cheaper over time, just don't expect some drastic differences with ICE car depreciation in first 8 years at least.

    • +1

It makes no difference at all, woke.

    • Most people don't get caught up in stupid internet drama. It's like Keeping up with the Kardashians for nerds.

    • if the company goes bankrupt getting parts will kinda suck…..

  • +7

walks into tesla dealership & hears a fellow ozbargainer trying to haggle it down by price matching officeworks

  • +2

Going to drop further once Dolphin, Seal and other quality EVs hit Aussie market later this year. About time to wake up Tesla

    • +1

I want the Rivian EV. They need to introduce it here

  • Model S is quite pretty. What happened to the rest of the range🤮

  • QQ so is finance also via Tesla or can I get a personal loan and then go with it?

    • Hop on the site and go through the order process yourself to sus it out.

It can all be done directly in the order process via Tesla, but is/was handled by Macquarie/Pepper last time I checked.

  • -6

Good luck waiting in line for hours to charge.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Bought 1 from TGG Commercial.

  • +4

    Anyone tried Officeworks price beat

    • Yep works ordered 10. Stack cashrewards to for that juicy cashback aswell.

      • +1

        Cashback capped at $10

        • $0 cashback because he used a code not listed on their website.

    • yeah., @cxy0614 got 10

  • +1

    Delivered + On Road Costs

Not really "delivered" price if on roads are extra.

  • +2

Does anyone know if you can extend the manufacturer's warranty? It looks like it's 4 years or 80000kms which is pretty garbage nowadays… This is what would make me head for an EV6 instead

    • If you can get an ev6

      • +1

I'm sure by the time I can afford either of these cars, Kia will have stock :-)

  • Can they refund the difference if have ordered 1 week ago? If yes, please, not as Tesla credits or Tesla stock…

    • +1

Yes it's automatic if yours still on order.

  • Damn, that's yield is high.

  • +2

Novated leasing is better value for EVs than buying outright due to the FBT exemptions
    https://www.leaselab.com.au/novated-lease/electric-vehicles

    • +4

I couldn't get novated lease to work for me. Couldn't package the electricity (but you can with petrol for ICE cars), vertually no services, Brakes last a long time with 1 pedel driving. There just isn't much to claim pretax. You save the GST but you pay interest on the loan for the term of the lease.

Ended up just adding it to the home loan (that was around 3% at the time).

      PS - I love it!!! :D

      • +2

Agreed, most of the tax savings seem to go to the novated lease companies instead!

      • +4

Suggest a look at the EV Discount Bill that's now law with Zero FBT.

        ATO has published guidance now:
        https://www.ato.gov.au/General/Fringe-benefits-tax-(FBT)/FBT-exemptions-and-concessions/Electric-cars-exemption/

    • +1

Using the same FBT exemption could a sole trader claim 100% of the cost/depreciation of an EV?

  • +1

Has the appalling build quality been fixed yet?

    • +6

The build quality in Australia has been excellent

    • +2

Yep, we get our Tesla’s from Shanghai now and they are really good. My 2021 M3 is as good as our 2021 RAV4 Hybrid.

      • Thanks so the build quality around the world differs?

        • +1

Absolutely, the USA ones have a reputation for patchy quality. They are improving, but there are still issues that the Shanghai ones don't have. Australian Model 3/Y come from Shanghai, Model S/X still come from USA.

  • +2

Back to the launch price back in June 2022 - Good on them to honour the new price for existing orders.

  • +8

Put it on a novated lease, with the recent changes to FBT you basically get a 5 year interest free loan on it (probably get it cheaper than outright depending on your lease provider and individual tax rate). Plus all running expenses are discounted by your tax rate.

    • Can you elaborate?

      • You pay using pre-tax salary and not take home pay.

Eg if your lease + expenses is 10k a year and you're on 47% individual rate.

Novated lease - lose $10k in pre tax a year, save having to pay $4700 tax on 10k

Non novated lease - earn $19000 pre-tax, pay $9000 tax, pay $10000 car expenses

    • +2

how you get interest free when the novated lease company charge you that for the term of your car.

      • +2

Interest free in the sense that the repayments+residual is the same price or less than the outright price.

  • First Post Wonder, congratulations!

  • -2

A Hyundai for the price of a BMW

    • -1

The Chinese made ones are better than the Hyundai's I've owned/been in.

  • +2

How long until all the other car makers are making EVs that are cooler and cheaper than Teslas? Can't be long now with a lot of markets wanting to transition to EVs being the defacto car.

    • +2

There seems to be loads of really average cheapo EVs heading our way this year. Hopefully will get enough of them to move more people to EVs. I'm waiting for second hand Tesla model 3's to get cheaper, more EV's on the market will hopefully bring them down more.

    • +1

Cooler? Doubt it. Tesla is a tech company. Their software is basically best in the market. Design choice though…

      • Once CarPlay and more advanced versions of Android Auto are put into cars people will think those cars are advanced tech too.

  • Anyone knows when 4WD prices will drop?

  • Can you have EV novated lease and still get the 3000 NSW rebate?
