Hi All,

Just came back from Tesla in Chadstone. The Model Y has a $3000+. price drop. Just started today at lunch time.
Went for a test driver and when I came back, the sales guy said he just received an email confirming a price drop on the Model Y.
Being a true OZBARGAIN guy, I bought one. Took all of 5 mins to order. 2 - 4 month deliver time.
If anyone thinking of getting one, now is a good time before they have massive back orders I guess.

NSW $71757
ACT $71337
NT $73570
QLD $72856

My car came with EAP for free, the uplift to FSD was what I paid for. Whilst I always knew it wouldn't be ready for Dec 2019 as promoted, it is now Jan 2023 and there is almost no chance Australia will see a city driving FSD in the next 2 years. Tesla also values the FSD option as zero when/if you trade the car, so basically, I was misdirected into funding the development of FSD for future buyers whilst getting nothing back. Love the car, but not a fanboy of the company nor CEO.

          • @sockpuppy: Wow thanks for sharing. I did some googling and it seems full FSD is only available in certain cities in USA and China and Europe.

  • is there an easy way to determine whether you're entitled to the discounted delivery fee (corporate plan) ?

  • +19

Congrats on your new car OP! And everyone else who has one on order. Getting a new car is so exciting

    • +13

Man we need more positive people like you on the internet.

  • Thanks bought 5. Will be a nice gift for friends

    • May I be one of your friends? Thx op.

    • Hey it's me, your friend.

  • Has this expired? Not showing that kind of price on their site.

    • +1

It's $70,700, plus on road costs (since it differs from state to state)
Eg, in the ACT it's $71,337 driveaway, NSW is $71,757, WA is $76,337

      • +1

Ah right Ta. $71,303 drive away in Tas.

this seems to be a brag "Look at me I bought a Tesla" thread
70k for a piece of junk, Id rather get a petrol Kia for 30k….now thats a oz bargain thread

    • -3

And increase your chances of lung associated health problems later in life with the petrol fumes. Or lose your legs in a horrific car accident while you could have survived with no body part loss inside a tesla.

Sometimes, saving money can't buy health and safety later in life.

      • you sound like you should just stay at home

        • And you sound like i killed your dog when i haven't. Buying a ev is better for everyone post production. Wouldn't be buying a kia when byd will bring their small hatch this year for abit more coins.

          • @ChickenAdobo: I wouldn't buy a Kia now but I def wouldn't buy this hunk of junk for 70k.

    • Kia is now less embarrassing to drive than a Tesla (and I drive a Kia which I love).

Too much baggage, if it was a Kia EV6 would be a quiet thread.

      • If it was an EV6 post, it would likely be marked Unobtainable deal (not available to order). 😉

      • You must have really low self esteem

        • /looks at Musk simps in this thread

          Irony…

  • +1

    Should be $70

  • are there any government rebates on these?

    • Yeah, novated lease and state incentives

  • Model Y Performance has only dropped $1800, but VIC drive away price has only dropped by $309

    • Not. Close to 2k

    • Apologies - I was looking at the wrong amount (I'd recorded them but just looked at the wrong one) - actual drop is $2,335 on the performance model without extras.

Muh electric car will save the planet. Muh Lithium battery / car will be unusable in 7 years.

    • Heard of lfp battery?

    • Muh debunked talking points

  • I don't understand the EV with FBT Exempt and Novated Leased is costly management fee plus higher interest rate etc and how can this work for us? Unless sole trader can claim 100% business use with full GST claim back?

    • If a novated lease made sense or at least break even with fbt, there will be a substantial saving with no FBT.

    • +1

My company is with smart leasing and their interest rates are like 10%-11%. A 5 year loan + residual for an atto 3 basically costs the same as the outright price ($48500 at the time I got the quote).

The fun starts when you add all your running expenses over 5 years Eg. Electricity, rego, insurance - they all get paid pre-tax.

      • +1

10-11% is a lot for a car loan.. Macquarie offer comparison 7.8%.

        • +2

It is alot, it's a shame since the 32-47% you're saving on tax is just going to the leasing company. But it still ends up being cheaper than a typical loan.

          I believe cba has a "green" loan for ev/phevs. It's 4%

      • The leasing company I spoke to said they couldn't include the electricity costs pre-tax, but to (sorta) compensate you could package the installation of a charging point at home.

  • +1

Fuel consumption savings of traditional ICE car vs Tesla model Y.

Tesla model Y standard range (RWD) consumes 13.4kWh per 100km.
    Assume energy is 30c per kW x 13.4 = $4.02 per 100km.

Most ICE cars today use about 10L per 100km.
    $2/Ltire for 95/98 Fuel x 10 = $20 per 100km.

Tesla is nearly 5x cheaper to run.

*30c energy price assumes you're charging at home and not at SuperCharger site.

    • +6

My Forester is doing 8.5/100km. That's $17 per 100km. I do around 15,000km a year. I would have saved $1950 a year, meaning that it would take me 10 years to break even

      • +2

meaning that it would take me 10 years to break even

What's the maths if you include servicing costs (which are clearly higher on the Forester than the Tesla) on the break even period?

        • +4

Tesla's insurance is 60% more expensive. That more than makes up for the savings in servicing

          • @Terencey: How can you definitively say that the Tesla has dearer insurance? Insurance costs a different amount for everyone, and depends on many thousands of variables.

            • +1

@WhatWouldBiggieDo: I can't speak for everyone, but it's logical to think that a more expensive car (and a higher risk one) would command a higher insurance premium for most people

    • +3

Not comparing apples to apples but Telsa model Y is $40K more expensive than the traditional Toyota Camry. At a fuel economy of 6L/100 KM, assuming you drive 25000 Km/year at a fuel price of $2 per litre ($3000/annum), it will be 13+ years for the additional cost to break even.

      • +1

My mum owns a 2019 Camry, it get's nowhere near 6l/100km, more like 8-9l/100km. And why compare to a base model Camry price to a Tesla?

        • +2

I compared the mileage and the price of the new Camry and even the base model Tesla 3 is $70k in Australia.

          Vehicle Subtotal (including GST) $65,700
Includes delivery fee of $1,400 and order fee of $400
          Local Stamp Duty $4,271
          Local Registration Costs $516
          Local CTP $469
          Local Plate Fee $31
          On Road Fees Subtotal $5,287

          Drive Away Price $70,987

          • @mkh1991: The Camry and Model Y aren't at all comparable. A better comparison would be a Rav4($40k+), but even still Tesla is a premium brand while Toyota is a value brand.

    • +2

This comparison very bias towards evs. Most of the hybrid ICE run less than 6l per km real world and tesla never ever can do 13.4kWh real wirld. And, non of the hybrids need 95/98 petrol.

      • Not to mention the energy price for people in NSW/QLD/SA is unrealistic unless charging offpeak. Vic does have power prices less than that though.

    • +4

mate you lost your marbles if you think your saving - you pay $40k more for a car - how long will that take to save
not to mention your insurance is higher

even if your electricity is free - say solar - you still wont save enough if you only do 7k-10k a year in kms which you would be on that junk
no way you can take a Tesla for a decent trip

      • People comparing the model Y to a 25k car. Lol

    • 30c is pretty high. Some of the slower chargers only charge 20c, I think our home rate is around 10-12c

    • Plus 7 cents per km in some greedy states

  • +9

    Ozbargain.
It used to be a site for finding bargain.
Now it’s a site where people rant about their political views instead.

    • +5

Yep, with majority of replies thinking they are funny.
Having an opinion is fine, but having an opinion without ever trying a product nor ever intending to make use of the product is ignorance.

    • -3

its not even that - its a status
somehow these Tesla clowns think they are better - bit like teal voters

  • -1

Still much more expensive than the price in China and USA…

    • +6

Hmm, who would've thought that the countries that have factories building the actual car would be cheaper than countries where they don't build the car?

Literally like complaining on a deal for a Nissan by saying it's cheaper to buy them in Japan.

  • +1

    Don't forget cashrewards and shopback

  • Does it stack with cash rewards or shopback + gift cards + edu discount ?

    • Log in through UniDays - will be cheaper

  • +3

i saw a tesla on road recently, i think the 'fresh' look is starting to wear off,

just plain ugly shaping huge toy car

    • +1

only so much you can do with car shapes, no lack of a grill removes some areas you can bling ….. just leaves lights and indicators ……used to be the same with mobile phones ….now they all look the same when turned off ……

    • +3

Looks like a big toe imo

  • The price of Tesla in Australia is far higher than that in other regions, and the price of Model Y is $1W+ higher. The current electric cars are updated very quickly, and this price can only be sought after in Australia.

    • +2

Which regions have Tesla 3/Y cheaper than AU?
At least a year ago AU had cheapest Model 3 in the world, has something changed?

      • -1

Australia is not the only one that has lowered prices at the time today.
in China today, the starting price of Tesla Y is ¥259900=$54166

      • +2

        Tesla Y price reduction ¥30000-50000=$6250-10416
        Tesla 3 price reduction ¥20000-36000=$4166-7500
Here's Tesla's official price cut in China today

  • -2

Too much hassle and inconvenience to charge.

    • +7

I charge at home 99% of the time. It takes a good 15 seconds to plug it it, maybe 5 seconds more that my iphone.

    • +8

About the same hassle as charging your phone at home.

      • Not when you are driving to regional areas. There are times when you are low on charge and have to wait long time to charge or even wait in the queue. There are not as many charging stations.

        • Just avoid regional areas, like 70% of the population?

          • @Miso: But 98% of Australia landmass is regional?

        • +3

So, do you live in rural Australia then?

You're correct, there are not enough chargers in rural areas.
But you've cherry picked a very specific use case.

It also doesn't help that a lot of EV owners insist on fully charging at some of these chargers when they may only need to charge for 20-30 minutes (rather than 60+).
Over time, people's habits will hopefully adapt along with better infrastructure.

          • @Deviner: That works if you are not going to another city. Australia is a large continent. The nearest city to city is at least 8 hours drive.

            • +1

@alphaoasis: Most interstate routes, ie between ADL , MEL, CNB, SYD, BNE are well covered with charging. The only time you need a plan is remote rural

            • +1

@alphaoasis: Wrong. Brisbane to Gold Coast is only 5 hours with normal traffic.

  • +5

    Personally would hold off..
Tesla is in huge trouble in China - their sales have dropped off a cliff.
A lot of lefties are also turned off by Musk.
There is also a very high chance of recession this coming year.
Tesla is also one of the most "profitable" cars - earning 8x more per car than say Toyota.
There's still plenty of fat that will get cut this year I think!

    • +2

Think you have been fooled by the click-bait headlines.
When compared to BYD numbers which is a combination of Hybrid + Pure EV, media is just bashing Tesla and making the stats look worst of Tesla.
As you highlighted the margins for Tesla is way way way higher, BYD margins in 2022 was like 2%…. whereas Tesla was 15%.

Tesla are selling and selling very well.

      • +1

I always drop my prices when demand increases. I'm a Musk like genius

        • +3

As highlighted in this very thread, Tesla is bringing prices back inline to what it was before.
For 18-months from start of 2021 Tesla was increasing prices and the cars were still selling - somehow people ignore this very important point.
It is a profitable business and it is up to them to adjust prices based on the market.

      • +3

Tesla was always a gimmick - I'll wait a cheaper Kia or Hyundai - would rather buy them over Tesla junk - and hopefully by that time EV might actual be a thing

        • +4

          Good luck waiting.
Go walk into the Kia/Hyundai dealer and see if they have stock.
The waitlist is like end of 2024 (2-yrs).

Other manufactures can't build pure EV as fast as Tesla.
Also in 2-yrs time Tesla might come out with even better and cheaper version given they do constant updates.

        • +1

There is already 1 for you. Niro or the Kona EV. Go ahead.

        • I was thinking about getting the new KIA EV. Have you seen the pricing? It’s a joke

          • @sauce2k: yes, thats why you dont buy this junk right now , wait for EVs to be more massively produced and cheaper - no point paying double now - you just wont save and you are limited with what you can do with the car, for families that like to travel this is a joke

            • @botchie: Have you driven the car or own one to call this car a junk? That’s a pretty big claim.

For someone in a market for a car you either wait 12-18+ months for a hybrid vs a few months wait for this Tesla.

      • +1

no other car manufacturer is dropping thier prices, theyre literally increasing them instead. and. their share price is 75% down from a year ago and made a new all time yearly low yesterday. you might be the one getting fooled if you dont see any problems md with that

        • +2

For 18-months from start of 2021 Tesla was increasing prices and the cars were still selling - somehow people ignore this very important point.
Share price has nothing to do with how Tesla runs the business, share price is based on investor sentiment.
Tesla share price is way overprice anyway, but that does not change any factual information the business itself is highly profitable and will continue to grow.

    • +1

Hmm… Are you buying a car or shares?

    • +1

The worst thing is that the quality of these cars is very poor and well documented. Better off spending your money on a quality car maker like Toyota

  • +7

    Still too much.

From my experience, people drive Teslas so they can tell you, they drive a Tesla.

Any they don't just tell you they drive a Tesla; it's typically the exact specifics e.g. "mine is the Performance Model Y with dual motors and all-wheel drive in metallic red. I opted for the enhanced autopilot and conduction wheels. It can do 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h. I don't like the attention but it really is a head turner…".

    • +2

      I drive a Tesla. I don’t tell people I drive a Tesla.
To me it’s just a car.

      • +14

        The irony of your comment.

        • Lol

        • +2

          Got me there

      • +1

        I love a bargain.
        I don't tell people I love a bargain.
To them I'm just a tight arse.

    • +3

I can do it in 3.7 seconds but the look on her face afterwards stops me from being so quick

      • +1

well at least yours is controllable, unlike some… (giggity)
