    mini tiny… tautology?

  • +1

Is there wifi card on this

    • ETA NO, AS PER BELOW COMMENT

Can't say for sure, but appears it does based on a review from Lenovo website

"After trying everyone get a WiFi connection including deleting drivers and software and a complete windows ten re install. Still no WiFi. Opened up the case and the gray wire to the WiFi card was off. Not the antenna wire. The power wire. Plugged it in and now it works."

    • +2

      Nope.

      • +1

do you have any recommended wifi cards?

        • +9

For something like this you just grab a $15 USB WiFI dongle.

        • I bought a wifi card for a similar unit (the Lenovo M72e) from China for a few bucks, but you also need antennas and cables, and unless you can source the Lenovo internal antenna, you'll need to drill a hole in the case for the second antenna. A USB dongle is not as elegant, but much easier and quicker to get.

        • +1

Add an AX200 or AX210 (the CNVi models like AX201/AX211 may work as well as they're "half" of the card and can be cheaper, but no guarantee) to the machine. There should be an empty slot on the mainboard already. Antenna is an issue but there are kits specifically for your chassis model.

USB dongles are usually suck but really depends on the use case. The common USB 2.0 models are slow, but they're dirt cheap. Price matters for accessories for a cheap machine.

  • Intel Core i5-6400T @ 2.20GHz Average CPU Mark = 4321
    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-6400T…

  • Do these come with Intel vPro?

    • No it doesn't.

  • Can it accept mini Pci wifi card? 3rd party card?

    • M.2 according to https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1174715/Lenovo-Thinkcentre…

Or could use USB wifi dongle.

      • +1

In similar Lenovo I had to reflash Bios with entering “INVALID” for serial and model. It beeps but proceeds to boot OK. Before that it did not boot with non-lenovo wifi card.

        • Its a good point.you raise. I have met a bunch of laptops that insist on the original chipset card and wont play with alternates. Dont know about this box specifically in that regard. Some research might be merited before buying.

This page suggests there are some additional parts required and a white list:

    • I used an AC wifi card out of a HP laptop and it worked straight away. I believe it can be picky though.

  • +1

You might want to update the listing as Item Specifics says “ Storage Type: SSD (Solid State Drive)”

    • +1

      Thanks done!

  • Do these come with a single 8GB SODIMM or 2x4gb?

    • +1

      Single 8GB

  • +1

Does it have 2 RAM slots to add another 8GB?

    • +1

      Yes.

  • +1

Can these play 4K Youtube if I use this as a HTPC?

    • +4

No. These make good backend servers, e.g. Plex.
For front-end, get something fanless and modern like Android or Apple TV.
I don't think these even do HDMI-2, and I doubt your TV has DP for 4K.

      • 3 independent displays;
        Max resolution: 4096x2304 (DP)@60Hz; 4096x2160

I think displayport to hdmi would work

        • You'd need an active converter for 4K, no?

      • +3

Wrong. These can decode 4k h265. Also, they can drive a HDMI 2.0 display using a DP to HDMI 2.0 adapter, which aren't too expensive ($15 or so).

If you want you can absolutely run Jellyfin or Plex on it using the desktop app, but you are probably better off with an android TV device

  • +2

Does this CPU have QuickSync? (Seems like it does?)
Any experiences from anyone using this or similar as a Plex or Docker host?

  • Suitable for Plex transcoding?

    • yes but with limitations. google for plex cpu recommendations. there is a matrix comparing the newer models with the older in terms of the different capacities.

  • -8

Would this product or any of the ones listed be able to fit an RTX-3060Ti (zorac) dGPU for a cheap gaming rig?

    • +4

      no

    • +14

Are you kidding? This is barely the size of a graphics card itself.

  • -5

It's almost impossible to find non vmme m.2

    • +32

Well if you're gonna handicap yourself by not using the internet, then yes, impossible. Otherwise it took me a whole 10 seconds.

      • +6

Hahaha love the passive aggresive tone! Upvoted!

        • +2

Thanks for noticing. I've been working on my accuracy and timing of my delivery and trying to transition away from the spray and pray approach.

    • +2

Just search on ebay for WD Green M2 sata. New options from $37 posted for 240GB (from Melb via Scorptec).

  • +1

    Rookie question.

Anyway i could get this to power and read 3 SATA HDD's for a NAS server?

    • Also interested. I think you'll need a multi hdd usb enclosure for that but it seems like it'll work

      • +7
        • The duct tape and foam was a nice touch haha. Did not know there was an m.2 to sata splitter.

Where did you manage to find the 5 Bay hdd enclosure for so cheap?

          • +1

@mit: hahah thats my exact same thought!!! $50!@!

          • @mit: Just kept an eye on eBay for a used one.

If you're not concerned about looks (evidently if you're considering this setup, you're not) - you can easily get a 5x bay HDD cage off ebay for around $30. These are intended to be used inside a desktop but will work fine.

The duct tape/foam was a temporary measure, I've since dremel'd the bottom of the case for the SATA cables, and used a decent velcro to stick them together.

            • @Unleash3896: It seems like for a nas just getting an old pc in a full size atx case will be a bit less mucking around with power and sata ports at the cost of more power consumption and noise. Might just save this mini pc for home assistant etc

              • +2

@mit: Yes 100%. Part of the reason for this project was building something as cheaply as possible, and also the challenge of making it workable. A used full-size enterprise rig would require less problem solving, but I still doubt you could do it much cheaper unless you bought another case that had 5+ HDD bays.

            • @Unleash3896: Thank you for the link to the cage.

This is really sparked my interest!

        • That is an awesome use of one of these systems. Thank you for details.

    • Yes, external HDD docking!

    • +1

Not internally and power supply would be an issue. Externally via USB enclosures but useful as storage for your NAS is doubtful and certainly not RAIDable.

Better option is the next form factor up "small" that can also handle 3.5 drives.

      • +1

run a hp g2 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/744420) using proxmox and zfs (raidz) quite reliably using external 2.5 USB disks…

Not business critical, but so far so good!

        • Just diving into the world of random things to do on home networks. Is proxmox the way to go? Seems like I can create a bunch of containers for other services too.

Did you just plug the 2.5 drives in through their own enclosures? It seems getting a multiple hdd enclosure is so expensive you may as well just get a 2nd hand prebuilt nas.

          • @mit:

Is proxmox the way to go?

I tried it and switched to Portainer on Rocky Linux. Pure Docker. Proxmox is VM focused.

          • @mit: Hey it's me again. Yes Proxmox is absolutely the way to go for homelabbing. Thoroughly recommend it. That jerry-rigged duct-taped monstrosity is running 4x VMs and 20x containers. It barely even blinks, everything is super lightweight. Only spinning up Windows VMs starts to tax it.

            • @Unleash3896: I guess this is another rabbit hole I'll be finding time for. Pretty cool project btw.

      • +1

        certainly not RAIDable.

Im pretty sure you can make software raid, which is what everyone is doing today. HW raids are in the past.

    • +4

      Absolutely. $40 JMB585 m.2 to 5x SATA adapter.

It's not pretty, but it positively flogs a synology for a seventh of the price.

      See my build below

      https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/xfh8p9/the_janklab…

      • Dude! That's amazing and got me thinking I need go down this route.

        Thank you!

      • Did you put heatsink on jmb585? I had to after i started getting IO errors.

  • Thanks, bought one! Just what i was looking for plex, print server and torrenting linux ISOs

  • Bought one, might have a crack at using PFSense on it with VLANs as there's only one NIC

    • +3

OPNsense.org, not PFsense. And I added second NIC, its small card with header, got it on Ali.

      • For this model? Mind sharing a link?

      • Didn't know about opnsense.
Thanks for mentioning that as it looks like pfsense is the pits with Netgate at the wheel

        • Its overall better, better licence, more secure code.

  • Description still has SSD by the way:

Lenovo ThinkCentre M700 Tiny PC Intel i5-6400T SSD W10 PRO

  • Hi Op, just wondering if you know any cheap SSDs for sale?

  • +11

I bought one of these just over a month ago (from an OB deal) and paid around $160 for 16gb RAM and a 120 drive installed. Needed a small PC for my music room. I'm extremely impressed. Unit is in excellent condition and runs beautifully. Had to do the workaround to get Win 11 installed as this CPU isn't officially supported by the upgrade program (from my experience and what MS website states). Works well and is a quick little box. As far as wifi goes, I bought a $15 AC adaptor and had a BT dongle floating around, but everything plays nice together. I would have preferred this buy as I've got lots of spare SSDs and spinners around (thanks to more O.B. bargains). I added a 250gb SSD as an additional drive, but if you're not installing heaps, you don't need to go overboard with boot drives. 6 USB 3 ports give you plenty of room to plug in an external, and, for anyone needing a DVD, you can pick up matching units (refurbs) for around $25 on eBay, as well as genuine Lenovo WiFi kits if you don't want another dongle sticking out.

  • Bought same model before by $150. It was working perfectly as TV media box. Now grabbed another for another TV.

  • +7

Does anyone know what sort of power draw at idle?

  • +2

Or for $50 more, get a newer processor, SSD, windows and wifi.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/749044

  • My code didn't apply and got charged $129. Should I cancel the order and reorder?

    • +3

Why not, just shoot me a message on ebay.

      • Message sent on ebay. Cheers.

  • Anything in this small factor but either with dual NIC or with an expansion card option?

    • Adding one more USB to ethernet dongle will give you another NIC.

  • +8

Not impressed with this seller. Ordered one in November, after a month package never arrived. Raised a ticket and no response from them. Had to ask eBay to step in and get refund.

Funny thing is they never responded but once the refund was made by eBay they quickly were able to redirect the parcel back to them next day? Dont bet on their customer service.
