How would this go as a Plex server? Is there something better for a similar price?

    • +6

For $129 I think this would be a great price for a Plex server. Would Handle Plex fine.

      • Thanks

        • Would these ruin better than say the nvidia shield to play movies from an ssd?

          • +2

@chinaman: It might be able to do 4K but I doubt this thing could handle stff like HDR if you're thinking of using it as a media player.. Shield would have more usage.

      • +3

What would be the best approach to storage for this usage? Internal/external drive?

        • +1

          External only for these

          • +1

@grillba: 6 usb3 ports is about as good as you'll get for something this size though.

      • can play x265 ? say up to FHD?

        • +4

CPU has Quick Sync so should be good for that

    • +11

this would be quite good but do consider 7500t-specced machines as they have a better iGPU for faster transcoding for not much more money* compared to the price gap between the 7500t and the 8500t.

*when you catch a deal on one.

    • +1

Would work great. Install resilio sync for an excellent file sync between pcs

    • +2

I have this same model running plex server on arch Linux. It handle plex very well and been running flawlessly.

    • +2

I use this as a Plex server with a WD 18TB external hard drive and it's been very good thus far

    • Could someone share with me how you use this or something like this as a plex server?

I currently just stream the things from my laptop, but having a standalone hardware might be better for me.

        1. Install an operating system
        2. Download and install on the server
        3. ???
        4. Profit (opportunistically by not purchasing overpriced streaming services - I don't know)

(The devil is in the details. I.e. using a linux based operating system will heavily reduce base demand freeing up resources for your server applications, or a hypervisor layer will enable you to host multiple "servers" simultaneously. Do the above however you feel comfortable)

  • +6

This should be a good Rpi alternative for home assistant.

    • wouldn't power consumption be way more for this?

      • be surprised how efficient some of these are. My HP G4 SFF (not mini) with NVME, 48GB ram and and bunch of usb disks uses around 15w cruising along with i7-8700 running HA, heaps of docker containers and a windows VM…

Under load the spikes can be 4x higher, but can use powersave modes to temper.

        • I think your i7-8700 will help that a lot, I had a Dell Optiplex SFF i5-3570 and being an older gen it drank a lot more juice than my rpi HA install… I've ended up moving HA to my Synology (which is on 24x7) just to try and limit power consumption these days. Reprovisioned my rpi as a zigbee2mqtt box so I didn't have to rely on any USB passthrough

          • +1

@bdl: 8700 is the same architecture as this, just more cores of the same.

these chips are 35w tdp, eat about ~8w idle and ~40w full tilt

        • What you running on heaps of dockers, I can’t think of anything other than HA which I am running, hence the PC is bit under utilised for me tbh. Similar specs.

      • +1

No. 35w max and its literally 4 times more powerful than a Pi.

        • that's only the CPU

    • +1

Yeah might not be bad for that. For something like HA I prefer to use an SSD since SD cards aren’t especially long lasting for heavier loads. Once you factor in the difficulty in obtaining PIs right now, current cost for one plus adding a case, SSD etc then this probably comes out ahead by a chunk.

  • How would this go for blue iris?

  • Thanks for the great deal OP, I'd like to order one with Win11 Pro.
Can I get the one with 1x HDMI 1 Display Port by any chance?

  • +2

fyi, can chose windows 11 model with no ssd saving $10 :)

    • +12

I have no idea why you would do that!

      • +2

I already have spare ssds that are bigger

      • +43

        because username checks out

        • +3

I spat out my coffee :)

    • How?

  • These or similar mini PCs will probably be great alternative to Nvidia Shield as a TV box. If they can handle 4K videos well…

    • I’m interested in using the base 8gb version for this - a 4k htpc. Is there a native hdmi port for this? I can see in the description but cannot see in the photo?

      • +2

Are you sure it is powerful enough for 4k?

        • Would like to know too

          • @chinaman: The processor itself is a little more powerful than Nvidia's Tegra x1. But the GPU part of Tegra is a lot more powerful… So maybe need a bit of a faster processor with a bit more powerful GPU part…

            • @Musiclover: Also the intel 530 iGPU can’t do 10 bit hdr HEVC decoding I believe? So a lot of 4k content would struggle as it’d fall back to the CPU a good chunk.

Intel quicksync is fantastic, but really need the intel 6xx series iGPU for the minimum imo.

    • -1

The problem is apps not designed for a TV experience. Need to get a remote etc.

    • It's not ideal for 4k. Look for a 7 series or above.

  • no free shipping on the Windows 10 Version. Can you change this please OP

    • +1

It's working on our end. Please reach out to us on the website and I can check for you

      • oh well, was only $18 total for four so not fussed(id rather not miss out)

  • can these be torn apart for parts??

  • X264 10bit playback this anit it ?

  • hmm tempted. very tempted.

BUT do i really need it if I have a Synology NAS (the DS920+)

    • same here. what can we do with this alongside syno ?

    • Buy now. Think later

      • haha. close.

for context: it is a 2016 CPU, but a good one at that.

        • 2015 actually and only downside is no hyperthreading (i.e. 4 core 4 threads). Still good for the price though, if you really need one.

    • +1

No you don't DS920+ has Q19 processor which handle 4k better than this Q15 processor. (Q19 has Intel UHD Graphics 600 and Q15 has Intel HD Graphics 530)

      • How about mine, ds1511+ with Intel Atom D525 Dual Core. It cant do x265.
If i get this for plex, how do i connect this to the nas? (All my media are in there)

        • Install plex media server to this pc, Map network drive. Then select this mapped drives to new plex server. Plenty tutorials in you tube. https://youtu.be/ipZl_iRiYCc ( Map network Drive)
          https://youtu.be/GEK6OCQj9Xg ( Plex Setup )
Make sure you select that network drive as source of Movies/Tv Show.

    • no, add some nvme for your storage pool on ds920 instead :) I've just done this and moved docker/vm's to it

      https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/pwrch3/how_to_cre…

https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B082BWY2C2 - I used two of these in raid 1, but you can use a single one if you don't want/need the redundancy

  • Go more Ram.. lookup Proxmox with docker containers.

  • also, has anyone made these headless/IP KVM without breaking the bank? After a one off setup with a monitor of course.

    • +1

I did it with a Lenovo mini one just running at my home with Debian, upgraded the RAM, HDD and CPU and that runs great

      • where would I start on how to do that?

    • +1

Havent seen that? I see it has VPRO to remote into your remote though…

      • If they have vPro then they have inbuilt ip kvm

  • +2

Has these machines got a spare slot for an additional SDD or M2?

    • It has a single 2.5" bay and a single M.2 NVMe slot.

  • Does this have USB-C Display Port?

  • finally one that looks decent aesthetically

    • We have a stack of these around the workplace and they’re certainly not too bad looking. Much prefer the G2 to the G3 we have from a looks perspective.

  • +2

Would this be any good for some light gaming? Roblox, minecraft etc

  • Is the RAM one or two sticks in either configuration?

  • Are these the "35W" versions or is that all the G2's?
Not sure because this review says it comes with a 65w adapter? https://www.servethehome.com/hp-elitedesk-800-g2-mini-projec…

    • Ok looks like 35W doesn't mean the power usage anyway… :(

    • +1

its 6500T so its 35w (doesnt correlate to exact power draw and even if it did - theres the rest of the system as well)

      • Thanks yeah just saw that the 6500T is 35w, should've looked into it more before posting!

Decided to get one - need to replace my piece of poo Celeron G530 HTPC

  • +1

Not going to be good for 4k content, for sure. Buy it only for office works and lite media consumption or torrenting, lite file sharing, don’t recommend for plex if you want to do transcoding ( weak Processor Graphics)

  • helloo.. if I am going to use this for netflix, nba, (streaming website/app) facebook, ms office, is it a good pc? thankss everyone.

    • yes

  • Is the wifi dual band built-in?

    • No wifi built in

      • Are you sure? I thought.I saw wifi in the connectivity part of the description. Most of the Mini Dell's like this (competing in the same space) that I have bought have had wifi built in.

Can't comment as to dual band.

        • +3

It comes with a crappy Realtek N300 dongle. You can add Wi-Fi with an M.2 card, but you will have to either source the original HP Wi-Fi antenna and cover, or alternatively there are two punch holes on the back where you can screw on generic SMA antennae like these.

          • @Void: Okay. That lessens the attraction a bit.

Search for the Dell micro's via BNEACTTRADER who often do deals here to get an idea for comparison with wifi already in and mostly a later processor than this.

  • Does windows 11 even support the 6500t?

    • not officially. it was installed using a hack. works now but who knows what will happen after a few updates

  • Damn, just missed it :(

  • Can this handle 2 UHD monitors? And is there any chance of upgrading SSD and RAM?

  • Thoughts on this for pfsense anyone?

    • Better off getting something with duel nics builtin.

You want something that is fanless with duel Intel nics.

      • Recommendations ?

    • qotom instead

    • +1

Fine if you won't use over 1Gbps of inter-VLAN and WAN bandwidth combined. Otherwise I recommend getting either a Qotom (or similar) which is fanless with more built in NICs, or getting the SFF version of this so that you can install PCIe NICs. I have the SFF and it's pretty quiet.

    • When I get mine I'm gonna try proxmox + pfSense with a UE300 for the WAN - the completely unrecommended approach of using a USB NIC but some people have had success virtualizing it like this, as opposed to having it directly connected to the FreeBSD based OS which seems to where most of the issues stem from.

Can let you know how it goes if you're interested! Worth a shot, if it doesn't work it'll replace my Celeron G530 HTPC as mentioned above anyway…

Something like a Qotom would be great but pretty expensive in comparison (~$300-400) for something I'm going to mostly have for fun and learnings.

  • dang I missed out D:

  • +2

Edit: We only have 2 x Display ports and 1 x VGA variants available in HP 800 G2 mini PCs. All orders will be sent out with this config. There are no HDMI ports available in these units.

  • Still waiting for it to be posted…….

    • +1

      Just posted
