Original Post

In last year's birthday celebrations, our community has organised 14 events across Australia cities with 204 OzBargainers participating, and we are hoping for more to this year. Like in previous years, we are looking for volunteers to organise the events, and OzBargain will pay for meals, venue and hopefully some new T-shirts (if they get manufactured in time for November).

Here are what the organisers need to do:

  • Organise a birthday party for OzBargain in your city, on any day in November 2022.
  • Post a thread in Site Discussions to get started, titled it "[OzBargain 16th Birthday] <City> Meetup on <Date> at <Venue>". Add a poll with "Yes" and "No" as options, to get an idea who will be able to come.
  • Once the event gets enough traction, for example 15+ people that are confirmed coming, PM me so I can send the organisers some T-shirts to be given away.
  • Use the event QR code feature to record participants on the day of the event.
  • Organisers would need to pay for the food & venue first, keep the receipt and OzBargain will reimburse the cost (unless you can get the venue can invoice us directly). Basically we would like to keep the events free for the OzBargainers.

In light of past experience,

  • 8 out of 14 events last year were in Sydney, and some people went to as many as 5 different events. I know where there's free food you can find OzBargainers, but as some events have cap in number of participants I would like to ask those with lots of Not a Bot badge to let other people to have a go.

  • Please, we need more Melburnians to organise smaller events. neil has been organising Melbourne meetups in the past years — those got too large and too much work logistically. Don't complain that you only get one meetup in a 5 million people city — pull your hand up & organise one! We might provide bonus funding if you can get jv to come.

  • Due to inflation, we will increase the budget to $35pp. Half of last year's meetups blown over budget anyway, but that does not mean there's no hard limit — please be moderate :) Also note that we cannot pay for alcohol. Some people might choose to order drinks in the meetup events. Sorry they'll have to pay themselves if it's an alcoholic drink.

  • As these are free events, a lot of people indicated they will come in the polls but did not turn up — that turned out to be quite an issue for us & the organisers. For example last year's Chatswood meetup — 73 OzBargainers voted that they'll attend, but less than 40 turned up — when we have already booked the tables & paid for the meals. For organisers — maybe smaller meetup that people can order on the spot is preferred. Alternatively we can also sell tickets. $5 in our Melbourne event last year, but fully-refundable if you show up at the meetup.

I'll continue to update this post for the next 2 months. Hopefully I'll be able to meet some of you in these events.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I bring my SO to the meetup? What about kids?

Depending on the venues, some might not be kids friendly. Moreover, some venues can only fit a fixed number of guests so bringing more people on the day that were not previously registered to come might cause issues to the venue. As of bringing extra people to come to the meetup event:

  • You can bring an extra person, provided that he/she has an OzBargain account and has registered for the event (by voting Yes on the poll).

  • You can bring young kids who don't have an OzBargain account.

Q: I am an organiser and I have made a forum post. What else do I need to do?

If you have finalised the date, time & venue of the event, and have set up a poll for the meetup, you can then

  • Request for your poll to be set up as an "Event". PM @scotty for that. You'll see an extra "event" tab next to view & edit tab under the post title.
  • Add users who have voted "Yes" to the list of participants. These are the ozbargainers you will be expecting on the day! You (+ some co-organisers) will be checking these users in to mark them as attended.

For more information about the event checkin system, please see this help page. On the day of the event:

  • Be sure to be there!
  • Check in the users. If it's a large event (i.e. 15+ people), some kind of name tags would be helpful. Blank address labels are fine.
  • Enjoy the food and chat with other ozbargainers!
  • Pay for the event, keep the receipt(s) and email them to me ([email protected]), together with your PayID or BSB/Acc# so I can reimburse you.

Comments

  • Just a note — @Varunn's 1 Dec Penrith event has been cancelled. There's however a new event at Penrith, organised by I Smell Pennies at Okami Japanese Restaurant on the 26th Nov in the evening.

Ooh it’s that time of the year again - happy birthday ozbargain 🥳🥳🥳. I’d love to organise some events outside of NSW but am currently recovering from a motorcycle accident. I can help others organise events for the other states if they need a hand or some advice.

@scotty lmk if you need me to delivering merch again - happy to help as always :)

  • Hi can I have posting permission on discussion forum would like to organise meetup for Sydney CBD or eastern beaches area. Current ones are all Northern / Western Sydney.

    • or smell pennies can plan one instead for CBD :D

      • pm me your ideas. maybe we can work together :)

  • +4

    Nothing in Perth?

    • +8

      Organise it yourself.

      • Is this a recording :)

    • was planning to organise something but accommodation and flights are exxy heading there

      • if someone covers half the cost of the flights and gives me a place to stay ill organise 2 events there

        • If someone covers all the flight and accommodation costs I will happily attend!

    • Wheres Perth?

      • +1

        I just posted one :).

  • I'd be really keen to attend a more local (Melbourne) event if it were in my area (eastern suburbs). Surely i'm not the only one out here that doesn't want to go to the CBD/Fitzroy/Brunswick/Footascray (GRAND SALE, GRAND SALE!)

Sorry, channeled my inner Franco Cozzo.

I'm 3155, anyone else in the area keen?

    • +1

Surely i'm not the only one out here that doesn't want to go to the CBD/Fitzroy/Brunswick/Footascray (GRAND SALE, GRAND SALE!)

Bad Shepherd Brewing Co is willing to host one. Just need to firm some details.

I'm 3155, anyone else in the area keen?

      Any suggestions of venue?

EDIT: What about The Bavarian at Knox Ozone?

      • are they both CBD? I was looking at venures to host in the west and east

      • +4

I’d check for fees at Bavarian. They charge 5% on top just for eating there on a weekday.

        • And a credit card surcharge on top.

      • I'd for sure come to bad shepherd if I'm around

  • Currently there are 8 events lining up in NSW — I think that should be enough for NSW and I'll need to leave some budget for other states.

Now for VIC, SA, WA, NT & TAS — we just need someone to start a forum post to gather interest and then work out a suitable date & venue for those who are interested.

    • +1

DIdn't see this until I'd already put my event up, should I delete or just leave it? I'm somewhat doubtful about Camden and Coffs Harbour tbh.

      • Coffs Harbour — 8 people are showing interest so there's a possibility that it will happen. Might need to check with @twilsoncrow to confirm the venue.

Camden — not much interest at the moment.

I do think there will be a lot more interest if there's an event at Parramatta. I'll check with twilsoncrow on her events.

    • Is more than half of ozbargain members from NSW?

    • Just saw this after I posted an event for NSW South Coast - should I delete: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/733439

      • Let's see whether you can get enough ozbargainers in the south coast to come…

        • Sure sounds great I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks @scotty!

  • For those interested in Sydney CBD, here you go: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/731148

  • How does one obtain an Ozbargain shirt without going to an event? :)

    • +2

      Black market.

  • +3

I've just made one for South-eastern suburbs for VIC if anyone's interested:

Would rather meet up my school enemies then any one here, it's been stated many times the type of people who would show up.

    • +3

Went to last years do, meet some great people and had a really good time.
Give it a shot you won't Reget it.

        • Ha Ha - so stay in your cave.

    • +2

Feel free to deactivate your account too while you’re at it

    • There was a pro vaxxer show up to one event promoting vaccines to a bunch of fully vaccinated people suffering long term symptoms

  • What goes into organising these events etc? Are there any certain requirements to be met? Any tips for planning and stuff?

    • +2

Usually you create a thread for your desired location to gauge interest. It has to be held sometime in November. Read the dot points underneath the table in the OP.

      • Not sure why you're downvoted, you're not wrong

        • +1

          Just my haters ;)

    • +1

The hardest thing about organising an event (IMO) is getting an accurate view of the numbers and coordinating with the restaurant.

      • That's true. So I think it's probably best to aim for 15-20 people at most so there's no need to book an entire venue, and people can just order when they arrive. People might have too much an expectation on what a "birthday celebration" should look like — it's just an excuse for ozbargainers to get together & chat :) We can go with multiple smaller events rather than a few larger ones.

        • +4

From previous years, even with a booking of 15-20 people some restaurants would prefer you to pre-order food so they can anticipate the demand, so having a refundable deposit is a good idea to get a more accurate view of numbers.

  • -1

What's with the bonus in getting jv to come ?

    • It's jv……

      Need I say more?

    • +2

JV shows up to all of them as one of their alts.

  • +1

I'll be keenly looking out for any ladies wearing Skechers.

    • +1

I don't think screensaver would have the guts to show up after the comments they've made about the community

    • I think the shoulder/arm cast would be more of a giveaway ;)

    • Fortress Melbourne is locked in for Nov 24, 6pm. I've got them to up the max capacity to 75 from 50 last year. It will be the same setup as last year however I think Scotty didn't want to go the route of refunding manually again as it took a lot of manual work. Might have to think about maybe giving it as a value add for Fortress (tab or something) or perhaps I'll carry a suitcase of unmarked $5 bills with me. I'm also going to attempt to offer the first slots to those who missed out from last year, if possible. Need to check the Eventbrite software.

    • Bad Shephard in Cheltenham is onboard and I'm just confirming the date but tentatively Nov 17. This one is a free event.

    • +1

Fortress?! Shut up and take my money!

    • How does one lock themselves in for the Fortress Melbourne meetup?
      Missed the last one unfortunately

      • +3

Will post as a deal but will ping here before doing so.

    • I think Scotty didn't want to go the route of refunding manually again as it took a lot of manual work

I'm taking $5 deposits via Beemit and will be refunding with $5 notes (or could do it through Beemit too). Shouldn't be too difficult with the numbers we're expecting.

    • Missed out last year, I'd be happy for you to keep my $5

    • The LAN centre?

  • +2

Sounds like a really good idea. I'll check for interest in a regional vic one (ballarat)

    • Good idea!

    • Organised anything yet?

  • +3

Whats up with VIC? Melbournians ASSEMBLE! We can do one for N/NE/E/NW suburbs combined.

    • +1

Hopefully you get flooded with responses. Good luck

  • Will there be a south australia meetup from the one n only nathan hunter?

  • +4

OP: People never value anything thats free, hence the no shows. If you even made them pay at least $5, that way their committed and guaranteed to show.

    • Not a guarantee generally in life, but definitely with OzBargainers.

    • This. Make it ticketed, and then add the value onto the "per-head" budget.

  • Any chance it could be organised before 16 Nov anywhere in Sydney, as going overseas on 16th. Would really wish to attend this…

    • change your flight?

      • They are too expensive
        True ozbargainer won’t do it

  • +3

Thanks Scotty. Nice of you guys to sponsor this each year

  • Everybody in their best Tarocash black suit and square-toed shoes. I don't want to see any RM Williams boots.

  • +1

Will the Not a bot badge help in selling my Qantas points?

  • jv scotty clear
could be interesting meeting these celebs

    • Same here

    • I just want to meet Pam.

    • +1

ive met them all. I want to meet dowwey, kerfuffle and the totoro dp lady. theyre my favourite people

    • I will be going to the Sydney one if anyone wants to bask in my greatness.

  • -2

Howcome Sydney has 10 and we get only 3? SYDNEY BIAS!

    • Not to mention @cerealsmok3r, who is going to organise 2 events in Melbourne, actually comes from Sydney.

neil will organise a Melbourne CBD event for late November. Maybe you want to organise one as well somewhere else in Melbourne?

      • -1

It was just a cheeky jibe, I could barely organise a bath at the moment, honestly. But the CBD one sounds good.

        • Need a Melbourne CBD for sure. I am in for Melbourne.

    • Why don't you host your own event like we do, rather than complaining?

  • +1

Sydney City CBD is now finalised

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/731148

  • Q : Non alcoholic drinks are allowed?

    • Yes, if we can stick to the budget mentioned in the OP.

  • Victoria events that I have organised have had their time dates and plate finalised. Will set the poll to expire a week before the events

  • Will there be free movie tickets???

  • PSA

Spots for the Sydney CBD (Chinatown) birthday lunch meetup is filling up fast! I need to confirm approx attendance numbers with Butchers Buffet by mid next week.

If you want to attend, please follow the instructions on the post, vote on the poll and send me the deposit ASAP (pm me if you prefer PayID/PayPal). I will provide another update as we get closer to the cap

    2nd Sydney CBD meetup here

  • I struggle to read this really long threads. I came to one of these ozbargain events 5 years ago, was great fun and social interaction. I am happy to organise one in Melbourne, wherever that maybe… hopefully not too far away from me, I am based in the city and Kensington. I just need some assistance and guidance and I’ll get it up and running. Thanks 🙏

    • There are currently 5 Melbourne events listed — maybe considering attending one of them?

      • I will go to one of them, just putting my hang up if you need any assistance with them. I can also entertain if you need 😊

  • OzB's finally legal age 😏

    • 18 is the legal drinking age.

  • -4

How about Arab food for once so I can attend.
