Change from FTTN or FTTC to FTTP by Upgrading to a Faster Speed Plan (Select Locations) @ nbn co via Participating ISPs

3950

Note: The FTTP upgrade has not expired. A new deal page has been created here.

Starting from today about 50,000 properties out of about 2 million properties can request to change their nbn FTTN to FTTP from a participating ISP.

More FTTN to FTTP network upgrades will happen until the end of 2025.

List of FTTN to FTTP locations by state and territory. More FTTN to FTTP locations to be announced.

Approx 1 million FTTC to FTTP locations will be ready by the end of 2022 and the remaining 500k locations will be ready in 2023.

Register here for FTTP updates via email.

Manually check your address here every month.

If your property is ready to go you will see this message halfway down the page;

Good news! You may be able to upgrade to nbn™ FTTP.

Contact a participating ISP to organize the FTTN to FTTP or FTTC to FTTP changeover.

Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply – please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria includes among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises (e.g. standalone premises or Single Dwelling Unit (SDU)) and placing an order for an nbn® powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.

What is the minimum speed plan you can order from a participating ISP to get FTTP?

FTTN to FTTP: Home Fast (100/20).

FTTC to FTTP: Home Superfast (250/25) Home Fast (100/20).

Can I order a faster speed plan?

Faster speeds can be ordered.

FTTN to FTTP: 100/40, Home Superfast (250/25) and Home Ultrafast (1000/50) | 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400.

FTTC to FTTP: 100/40, Home Superfast (250/25) and Home Ultrafast (1000/50) | 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400.

Are there any fees?

There are no fees for the installation of FTTP.

There is a $200 nbn downgrade fee if you change to a slower speed plan before 12 months ends. It is up to the ISP if they pass the $200 nbn downgrade fee onto you or not. If you change to a slower speed after 12 months there are no nbn downgrade fees.

Participating ISPs

2it Technology, Activ8me, AGL Communications, Atomic Systems, Aussie Broadband, Buroserv, Commander, Dodo, Exetel, FibreMax, Field Solutions Group, Flip, Harbour, ICTHUB, iiNet, iPrimus, Kinetix Networks, Launtel, Leaptel, Lightning IP, MATE, Mint Telecom, Moose Mobile, More, Nehos Communications, NewSprout, NodeOne, Occom, OntheNet, Optus, Plesi, Rummage Connect, Southern Phone, SpinTel, Superloop, Swoop, Tangerine, Telstra, Uniti and VeeTel. More ISPs to be announced.

Participating ISPs.

Is nbn FTTP installed automatically?

No you have to order nbn FTTP with a minimum speed plan from a participating ISP.

What is the nbn NTD?

The nbn NTD is a Network Termination Device that gets wall mounted inside your home and plugs into the WAN port on your router.

Do I need a new router?

It is unlikely that you need to purchase a new router for 100/20 and 250/25.

To get the best results for 1000/50 you most likely need to purchase a new router. A router with a Gigabit WAN port alone is not enough to max out 1000/50. Ethernet cabling gives you the most consistent speeds. For the best Wi-Fi speeds you want the router, computer, mobile phone and so on to have Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Dong Knows Tech has many router reviews with Gigabit speedtest graphs.

What happens if I want to stay on nbn FTTN or FTTC?

Nothing changes and you continue to use FTTN or FTTC as normal.

      • My ISP is with Superloop and so they are one of the participating ISPs listed. I asked them about this a couple of days ago and they told me that I'll just need to wait until my suburb gets the upgrade but they couldn't give me a date. My suburb has been listed as one of the suburbs that will be eligible but it isn't in the initial list of suburbs that they announced today as part of the '50,000' resident club.

    • No. As per Whirlpool you need to put through a new order.

  • I get crap speed with 1Gbps over HFC, I am wondering if there is any possibility to upgrade to FTTP?

    • Get a $0 HFC to FTTP instant quote.. There are installation fees.

Slow HFC speeds can be ISP related. Who are you with? Is your router capable of Gigabit?

      • I have tried both Superloop and ABB, I am currently with Tangerine and moving to ABB again on their 1Gbps plan in a few days time. I have tried both of these ISPs previously and max was 250Mbps on 1Gbps connection. I have got a gigabit router using wifi 6 and also wired connection.

        • @nadan, would that be ABB's $149/month plan?

        • Some routers need the settings tweaked. What is the model of the router?

          • @Twix: It is an Asus RT-AX88

            • @nadan:

              1. Go to adaptive QoS in the RT-AX88U settings.
              2. QoS sub menu.
              3. Toggle on enable QoS.
              4. For the QoS type choose adaptive QoS.
              5. Choose manual setting.
              6. Set the upload bandwidth to 48.
              7. Set the download bandwidth to 1000.
              8. Click on media streaming.
              9. Apply.
              • @Twix: Thanks, but what will QoS do in this case? QoS is for giving preferential treatment to certain types of traffic and we are talking about the overall bandwidth here.

                • @nadan: It helps you not hit the nbn upload policier and can get a better download speed.

The other possibility is that the ISPs keep putting you on the 250 speed profile instead of 1000. Get the ISPs to double check the speed profile is fine on their end.

                  • @Twix: Yes, I will try both of those. I believe it is an ISP related issue.

I wonder what the figure would be if someone worked out how much money was wasted on the "MTM" and then the remedial works required and then the overbuilding and eventual replacement of all those sub par connections.

    • +1

You would think the opposition should work this out and use it against the coalition at the election campaign. No idea if they've done it.

      • +1

They've thrown values around before, but of course LNP just go back and say FTTP back then was a waste, and that the MTM was best option followed by fttp upgrade and the media and people will believe it's true. ALP could point out that all the money spent on MTM part is wasted as it can't be reused and LNP will just lie and say it's all part of the upgrade and that it was better to have the rollout done quicker and cheaper than waiting for 2030 or whatever fake year they had for FTTP build.

  • Not sure when they are going to complete Complete Caroline Springs, Vic area. It was announced last year, beginning not sure when is the implementation.

  • Definitely jumping on this as soon as possible.

Edit: Just saw it's for select areas. It's telling that NSW has a longer list than VIC and QLD combined.

  • I’m with superloop FTTC on 100/40 $80pm unlimited

Either need to go 250/25 (lower Upload speed), unlim for $100

Or 500/50 3TB download limit $120 pm. Is there a better isp out there or better to just stick with superloop for simplicity ?

    • that's only for the first 6 months, right? then it goes up to $100pm

  • Where has this info come from? Nothing showing on NBNCo or any ISP site that it's starting from today. AussieBroadband had no info and said NBNCo need to notify residents first.

Latest news article about this I could find:
    https://www.itnews.com.au/news/nbn-co-reveals-just-20-fttn-p…

    • +1

nbn posted this today and the participating ISPs.

      • +1

ABB are saying NBNCo only notified them this morning about this but require the end users to wait till NBNCo arrange the lead in at their address before they can sign people up to the faster tier plans… But no way to contact NBNco and my understanding is no lead in will be done without first ordering the service so… Seems like a bit of a cluster atm.

  • WA. Had a chat with ABB, they said info is still fresh with no clear date yet. They'll be in touch through email when more info is available, or was told to feel free to touch base in a week or so. Just used online chat, was very quick and cbs calling.

  • +1

Paying $100/m for 100/40 on FTTC atm, honestly feels like being ripped off.

  • +1

The NBN site says "Good news! You may be able to upgrade to nbn™ FTTP soon". I am on FTTC atm.
TPG don't seem to know anything about this upgrade path, despite asking three techs. I suspect they have been told to say nothing and they are not on the list anyway.
Maybe they will in a couple of months.
The NBN guy walking past, looking for a pit by chance last week, told me I will get FTTP "next year". Hope he's correct.
My quote to upgrade was $3000, rather not pay that.

    • where do you see that? At check address? I don't.

It just says "You are connected to the nbn™ network"

      Technology used in your connection

nbn™ Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) has been used in your connection to the broadband access network.

      • I see it further down the page from "You are connected……" after "Technology used…."

    • That's interesting as you're not FTTN and still seeing that message! Are you in one of the suburbs listed?

      • No - Sydney Northern Beaches. So it's a puzzlement.
        We get nuthin.
The NBN guy walking past gave me the heads up though?

        • Cool. My guess would be northern beaches will be in the first group of suburbs for FTTC to FTTP upgrade in May/June.

I'm in upper north shore and I don't see that message. I think this means they're not gonna allow all FTTCs to upgrade in May/June. There'll be a staggered launch.

          • @Sharp: I'm excited.
            Do you mean May/June 2022 or 2023?

            • @wetwork: 2022

              • @Sharp: Yeah - just checked parent's house on FTTC, that address doesn't get the "upgrade available soon" message.

                • +1

@wetwork: Looks like we were right. Mona vale - Narrabeen area can apply FTTP upgrade from today.

                  • @Sharp: Thanks. I checked on TPG website and it says high speed NBN not available at my address.
Also the NBN website does not list them as a "Particpating provider" for the upgrade, which is part of the issue.
May take some time for them to catch up. Generally does.
Superloop as an example: their website says they can do it from 12th June.
Have approached TPG. Wonder if they know anything about it.

                    • @wetwork: I would just put the application in with superloop to get in line. Are you under a contract with TPG? if you're worried about the breakout fee, the upgrade may take months to complete and you may be out of the contract by then?

                      • @Sharp: Good idea @Sharp.
However TPG got back to me quickly and say they are getting a system in place to do this changeover and will advise me "soon".

                      • @Sharp: Looks like TPG are pushing back - saying that my suburb is not listed despite NBN clearly listing my suburb.
Time to go elsewhere now after 12 years.

Most of the time it’s only 5000 down.

Also would like to know ISP has better uploads.

    • -1

On 1000/50 with AussieBroadband already. Most of the time it’s only 5000 down.

      1000/50 with 5000 down 😏

Also would like to know ISP has better uploads.

Faster upload have to go for NBN enterprise, quite expensive, I was told NBN charge a lot for upload.

      • yeah but if they only provide 500 DL for 1G don't call it a 1G connection.

maybe provide an option like 500/100 for same price, and reflects the real DL speed so don't get charged for 1G while getting 500 only

    • Aussie BB sell 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400 on FTTP starting at $209/month. Nothing greater than 1000/50 on HFC.

      • nbn™ 1000/400Mbps
        Typical evening speed:
        600Mbps

        $429 only get's 600 DL..

        • The 600Mbps typical evening speed refers to Aussie BB's average speed from 7pm to 11pm. Download speeds closer to Gigabit on FTTP does happen inside and outside those hours. You are not guaranteed Gigabit 24/7 on a best effort product.

For a 1:1 connection there is enterprise products.

  • NBN is a joke. After going from NBN to 5g, there's no going back.

Tip: If you do know you have 5g coverage (5g on my phone), you can apply for 5g. If you fall out of the '5g coverage', you could apply the 5g at an address that is available and change the mailing address to your own home.

Did it for my place and it works.

Edit: Getting speeds of 300mpbs for the same price of nbn50

    • +5

NBN is a joke. After going from NBN to 5g, there's no going back.

If you have FTTP it is better than 5G at least low ping, for me only 2ms.

      • FTTN was only available in my case.

        • +2

FTTN was only available in my case.

In that case 5G is better , if you don't need static IP.

      • If you have FTTP it is better than 5G at least low ping, for me only 2ms

        at what cost?

compare the cost of NBN FTTP to 5G home internet, aka at least a 200 Mbps download connection cost (ideally 250Mbps download Fttp cost) vs a 5G home internet cost.

    • The closest 5G tower which my pixel picks up and gets 800mbs but this tower doesnt have 5G internet wavelength.

How far away was your fake address vs real address? Im about 2km as the crow flies from the nearest address that is eligible for tower with 5G internet wavelength.

  • its very frustrating that NBN is not upgrading connection technology type upgrading from fttn/fttc to fttp even https://tinyurl.com/tv3nb95v (Australian postcodes leading demand for faster broadband)

  • How do I find out if my suburb is eligible? If I look at the announcements, my suburb was in the August 2021 list

    • How do I find out if my suburb is eligible?

Is your suburb listed on this deal? Also check your street on NBN site.

I wonder how many people voted LNP in 2013 on the basis of their NBN policy offering being cheaper than Labor.
    Old staid people. Simpletons. Ugh.

    • -2

My guess is very few, because the NBN simply doesn't rate as a key election issue with the majority.
Remember that only connection rates are ~70% and that of these 80% won't pay for speeds faster than 50Mbps.
Due to speed tiers customers who don't require unlimited data may find that a 5G connection is cheaper and faster.

  • +2

I just want faster UPLOAD speeds.

  • If I'm on FTTC with Superloop 100/40, can I order Fast Pro (100/40) to convert to FTTP for free??

    • +1

First you have to order 250/25 or 1000/50 to change from FTTC to FTTP for free. To get 100/40 cancel after 1 month and maybe pay a $200 nbn downgrade fee.

  • can I order Fast Pro (100/40) to convert to FTTP for free??

If available it is free, check your address.

  • I have FTTP and not on NBN so I am happy thanks to opticom its privatly owned an managed fiber o yeah I have a 250mbps download and 100mbps uploads :D

  • If my suburb is announced on August 2021, I am not eligible to apply ?

    • +1

If you are in the table I posted you can apply. If not you have to wait to apply.

  • Let the price war begin, as with many of you, am on Superloop in my 4th month @ $80 for 100/40 but happy to upgrade to 250/25, the upload speed doesnt phase me all that much, looking forward to see what deals come out.

  • I am in Belfield NSW with FTTN, I dont see my suburb anyway does that mean it will never get an upgrade? Or just that possibly may get one after 2023? My folks have FTTC, so I cant wait to at least upgrade that connection to FTTP.

    • +1

It remains to be seen what nbn do after 2023. Nothing else was announced.

      • +1

Weird, I got an email saying my place is ready now to be upgraded, and i have already started the process with AussieBB. I dont get it, when i checked the website just a month or 2 ago, my area was not even in the talks of being upgraded at all…I am happy it is (FTTN belfield), I thought initially it would be my Folks FTTC upgrade that the email referred to but it was referring to my FTTN connection.

        • I can't find Belfield on nbn's rollout list. It must come under something else. Great news for you regardless!

No updates in regards to FTTC to FTTP.

          • @Twix: Yeah I find it odd right. I can't find that suburb anywhere in the list. But I got an email from NBN and now aussiebb have already started the process. and I have been given both dates of the NBN preliminary check and the actual installation date. I am close to the border of the suburb. I wonder if I come under a different exchange or something. Does nbn still do things by exchange like how adsl used to be?

Still hoping my folks fttc can be upgraded soon to fttp.

            • @lonewolf: It either comes under another area or nbn haven't announced your area but are taking FTTP orders. Some exchanges have been repurposed as an nbn Point of Interconnect. What is a POI? How and where your provider connects to the nbn™ network.

              • +1

@Twix: NBN guy came yesterday to do the preliminary check. And my appointment for the full installation is 1.5 weeks away.

                • @lonewolf: Sweet. What speed are you starting off with?

                  • +1

@Twix: Always been wanting the 1000 or the 250/100 but the 250/100 has gone up in price (alot from what i remember it being at, I could be wrong but i thought when it first came out it was a similar price to the 1000).

Anyway went with the 1000/50. Not a great up as the 250/100 but considerably cheaper

  • +2

Awesome! technician is booked for the 5th of April. Can't wait for faster speeds.

    • +1

Sweet! Who did you go with and what speed?

      • +2

Superloop and i'll mostly go on their 1000/50 plan which cost $139.95

        • +1

Superloop cut the 1000/50 down to 500/50 for new signups.

          • +1

@Twix: The person on chat said once my FTTP was active i could go on the 1000/50 plan. We'll have to wait and see i guess.

            • +1

@LuI3: Maybe they have reversed their decision. Superloop nbn page still shows 500/50 when it used to say 1000/50.

    • which provider?

  • 50000 out of 2 million ? 😂

  • Guessing even if my suburb is listed, no garauntee my property is eligible, and tpg isn't in the providers list either. I'd sign up straight away to get fibre into my place…

    • no garauntee my property is eligible,

Just check your address on NBN site, they will tell you.

    • if you're not in a lock in contract with TPG it's easy to change ISP providers that is currently eligible.
