Change from FTTN or FTTC to FTTP by Upgrading to a Faster Speed Plan (Select Locations) @ nbn co via Participating ISPs

3950

Note: The FTTP upgrade has not expired. A new deal page has been created here.

Starting from today about 50,000 properties out of about 2 million properties can request to change their nbn FTTN to FTTP from a participating ISP.

More FTTN to FTTP network upgrades will happen until the end of 2025.

List of FTTN to FTTP locations by state and territory. More FTTN to FTTP locations to be announced.

Approx 1 million FTTC to FTTP locations will be ready by the end of 2022 and the remaining 500k locations will be ready in 2023.

Register here for FTTP updates via email.

Manually check your address here every month.

If your property is ready to go you will see this message halfway down the page;

Good news! You may be able to upgrade to nbn™ FTTP.

Contact a participating ISP to organize the FTTN to FTTP or FTTC to FTTP changeover.

Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply – please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria includes among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises (e.g. standalone premises or Single Dwelling Unit (SDU)) and placing an order for an nbn® powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.

What is the minimum speed plan you can order from a participating ISP to get FTTP?

FTTN to FTTP: Home Fast (100/20).

FTTC to FTTP: Home Superfast (250/25) Home Fast (100/20).

Can I order a faster speed plan?

Faster speeds can be ordered.

FTTN to FTTP: 100/40, Home Superfast (250/25) and Home Ultrafast (1000/50) | 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400.

FTTC to FTTP: 100/40, Home Superfast (250/25) and Home Ultrafast (1000/50) | 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400.

Are there any fees?

There are no fees for the installation of FTTP.

There is a $200 nbn downgrade fee if you change to a slower speed plan before 12 months ends. It is up to the ISP if they pass the $200 nbn downgrade fee onto you or not. If you change to a slower speed after 12 months there are no nbn downgrade fees.

Participating ISPs

2it Technology, Activ8me, AGL Communications, Atomic Systems, Aussie Broadband, Buroserv, Commander, Dodo, Exetel, FibreMax, Field Solutions Group, Flip, Harbour, ICTHUB, iiNet, iPrimus, Kinetix Networks, Launtel, Leaptel, Lightning IP, MATE, Mint Telecom, Moose Mobile, More, Nehos Communications, NewSprout, NodeOne, Occom, OntheNet, Optus, Plesi, Rummage Connect, Southern Phone, SpinTel, Superloop, Swoop, Tangerine, Telstra, Uniti and VeeTel. More ISPs to be announced.

Participating ISPs.

Is nbn FTTP installed automatically?

No you have to order nbn FTTP with a minimum speed plan from a participating ISP.

What is the nbn NTD?

The nbn NTD is a Network Termination Device that gets wall mounted inside your home and plugs into the WAN port on your router.

Do I need a new router?

It is unlikely that you need to purchase a new router for 100/20 and 250/25.

To get the best results for 1000/50 you most likely need to purchase a new router. A router with a Gigabit WAN port alone is not enough to max out 1000/50. Ethernet cabling gives you the most consistent speeds. For the best Wi-Fi speeds you want the router, computer, mobile phone and so on to have Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Dong Knows Tech has many router reviews with Gigabit speedtest graphs.

What happens if I want to stay on nbn FTTN or FTTC?

Nothing changes and you continue to use FTTN or FTTC as normal.

I'm in Thornlie WA, have already been contacted by ABB 3 weeks ago, they call this free upgrade a trial and I wasn't given any info by email except I'm told it's free
NBN came and fed the fiber line to outside of my house last week and another technician is coming this Friday to get the connection box inside the house
I was told that I'll need to upgrade my plan from 50/20 ($79) to 100/40 ($109) but they didn't mention about the 12 month period.
Paying $360 for a free fiber upgrade is a steal and I hope more people will get this upgrade as well

    • Aussie BB 12 month details are in the T&Cs. and the FTTN to FTTP minimum plan is 100/20. Question Aussie BB about it and save yourself $120 if you don't need 100/40.

The minimum service that is eligible for an upgrade is 100Mbps/20Mbps (Homefast) plan.

  • Can someone who is currently on fttc show me a screenshot of where it is supposed to say
“ Good news! You may be able to upgrade to nbn™ FTTP."”

Is this not starting until May 2022 and rolling out progressively after that ? (For fttc to fttp)?

    • FTTC to FTTP starts in May. nbn haven't said if the rollout is progressive or all goes live at once.

  • +1

"Starting from today about 50,000 properties out of about 2 million properties can request to change their nbn FTTN to FTTP from a participating ISP."

Or, ya know, 2.5%. What marketing drivel. Call a spade a spade, the LNP completely trashed the rollout of the NBN.

    Ok
    Singleton Heights, NSW 2330
    Spoke to few different ISPs
SOUTHERN PHONE my current ISP don't even have an idea about this, wasted time talking to them,
Spoke to superloop they know this and they don't have the process yet established in their systems , but the website address checker shows as FTTP, they will ring me back in few days
Aussie broadband they have confirmed that they can connect it is a 4 to 8 weeks process but their plans are expensive

    Process.
    1. Order a minimum of 100/20 plan with ABB

    1. Abb will provision with current line capacity

    2. NBN will contact you directly to do an inspection of your property , they will check the conduit that comes inside your home . If it is not suitable then you will have to change it (NBN) won't pay for it

    3. ABB will contact you to schedule an installation appointment

    4. On the day NBN will install NTD and ABB will switch you over to fiber

    Additional info

*Your existing copper line will be active during the transition and for approx 12months so you won't have a down time during transition
    * There is 12 month minimum contract period on this.
If you downgrade the plan or move to another provider ABB can charge you $200
    * Even if you churn to another provider on the top tier plans still ABB can charge you this
    * So before churn go to the less expensive providers like superloop or southernphone for this FTTP upgrdae

    • move to another provider ABB can charge you $200

That's a bit harsh, as if you stay at the required minimum speed, NBN won't be issuing a downgrade penalty

      • Yes this is what I couldn't understand as per NBN if you change the provider and still stay on top tier plan NBN won't issue penalty of 200$ so then how ABB can charge ?

    • Southern Phone knew nothing about FTTP since they are not apart of nbn participating ISPs.

The $200 downgrade fee comes from nbn, applies to all ISPs and not only Aussie BB.

      • +1

        Thats not correct
Southern phone is part of the participating isps
But AGL Is also part of roll out
AGL and Southern phone are the same

        • You are right. I was thinking of another ISP.

    • Wow this is stupid - My FTTN is absolute garbage (constant dropouts) - I purposely use 4g to avoid it (Haven't had an active NBN service at the particular address in 2 years). As if I want to pay NBN/Aussie for an unusable FTTN service while I wait some undetermined amount of time while they upgrade me.

  • Weird, I checked my eligibility a couple of days ago with Aussie Broadband and it said I wasn't. I check again just then and it says I am.

  • Has anyone managed to sign up on superloop? I tried calling to ask but was on hold forever.

    • I didn't have any luck with Superloop. Their support lady said their systems weren't ready to process applications yet even though they are enrolled in the upgrade program. Massive own goal there unfortunately (Have been a customer for 3 years).
Churned over to Aussie Broadband and applied for the upgrade within 15 mins. Installation tech booked in for Wednesday next week!

      • did NBN rang you for scheduling the first site inspection appointment ?

        • +1

Just a TXT from NBN saying they will visit 'in the next few days' for the first inspection and that I don't need to be home.

          • @simm01: if you don't mind can share your suburb name pls

    • I confirmed with someone on live chat that I can sign up but I have to ring them…. After 57mins on hold "our call centre is now closed <hang up>" 😂

      ….will try tomorrow

    • Just phone Superloop and got through. They cannot / will not setup the upgrade to FTTP without setting up an FTTN service in the mean time.

  • Just got knocked back even though I live on one of the defined areas in SA!! Not real happy at the moment.

    • Go through a different ISP?

  • +1

i have churned from AGL to Superloop and got connected in less than 2 minutes through FTTN . and they have forwarded my details to NBN for organising the first visit

  • Aussi BB rang me and said they can put through the request but didnt bother as their plan pricing is high compared to everyone else

  • +1

Signed up for the FTTP upgrade with Aussie today. NBN Appointment booked for Tuesday 12th of April between 8am and 12pm.

  • +1

    Optus also added as provider

  • Also signed up with ABB today. Yes, they are more expensive but seems to be the most knowledgeable about the FTTP upgrade.

Exetel, who I'm with currently said they are still working through the process and added me to a waiting list to call me back once they work out their own internal processes. They weren't much cheaper in terms of pricing compared to AAB.

They also said something around never signing up too many customers to their network so that they don't exceed 80% of their max bandwidth they purchased.

I'm probably not explaining it right but I assume it means there will be less issue with speed when all their customer uses internet during peak hours.

You can use the below link to check if your address is eligible for FTTP upgrade,

    https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/lp/fibre-connect/

    • +1

I did some research using that link.

Only green title blocks are entitled to the free upgrade.

If you are a survey strata you are not entitled to the free upgrade. For example, my neighbour is 1 out 4 units and there not entitled to free upgrade.

Exetel is cheaper if you can get this on promotion. $80 for NBN 100 for 12 months with regular price of $95.

      Aussie NBN 100 is $99.00.

Your actually better off going to Superloop. $69.95 for 6 months with a regular price of $89.95. Over the 12 months the cost would be 79.95 per month.

Note you must retain an NBN 100 plan and you can not transfer provider for the first 12 months. At least that is the Aussie TOS which I suspect is the same as everyone else.

      • Thanks mate for the recommendation! A lot cheaper with superloop. Hopefully they also know the process

        • +1

For this make sure you give the NBN Provider a call to sign up. It's not recommended to use the online system since I believe this is currently a manual system to register for the upgrade. Also there has been mixed feedback on Superloop but it appears this is mostly existing customers.

My understanding is you must place a new order in order to upgrade to NBN 100. There a few lucky people with NBN 100 on FTTN and they do not get upgraded unless they sign up for a new plan.

Note Superloop also owns Exetel. However, I believe the sales teams are differnet right now.

          • @pandadude: Thanks again for the additional info, yep they're apart of Exetel alright. I just spoke to their Sales Team and got the same spill that Exetel told me. "They're still working on the process flow internally hopefully in the next few weeks"

To be honest, it feels good knowing that ABB employs staff in Australia and the money is staying onshore. Happy to pay more from that perspective. I know it's a savings of $240 for the first year and $120 for every year after that.

ABB was very quick to organise everything. NBN is coming out on the 13th April to do first inspection.

You get what you pay for in life I suppose.

            • @duckieboy: No worries. To bad you missed out on the 2 months free on Origin. By the time the rest of us are ready to move to FTTP hopeful this will all be sorted out.

  • Anyone had any luck with superloop and upgrading to fttp? It’s been two weeks and still no progress for me from fttn.

    • +1

Just go with abb, mine will be installed this Friday, 2 weeks after I asked them.

      • +1

Installation done today, 4ms ping.. Very nice… Cheers again Op

        • Is it a constant 4ms or it keeps on jumping up and down?

          • +1

            @BuyOrNot: it's jumping from 3ms to 4ms,..it's very good :)

  • Has anyone used anyone other than Aussie?

I noticed More NBN does offer this too?

  • +1

Ordered on weekend they installed the box outside on Monday. Should be complete installed is another 2 weeks. FTTN to FTTP

  • I spoke to More NBN. They have told me there currently in discussion with NBN Co and will make an annoucement soon.

Considering they actually are listed as a provider its very poor form for any provider to not actually support this.

If you can't wait go ABB. If you can wait like me your options in terms of pricing is More or Superloop or Exetel. Exetel does support IPv6. Note Superloop service seems to have dropped off the planet once they took over Exetel.

    • I’ve been checking in with More regularly since this was posted. Checked my address this week and was finally eligible for the fttp upgrade. Bought using commbank deal 30% off, switched provider and connected by the next day, still using belong modem for now, will switch to google nest once fttp ready. nbn guys are here the following day to install the fibre. Internal work booked for 5th may so all in all a good process so far.

      • I check More and it says the follow.

Great news! By ordering a XXL Speed Tier (nbn100) or above, nbnTM will install fibre to the premises for you at no cost! (please allow 1-3 weeks for an installation appointment)

        • Yeah it didn’t say that before, just eligible for fttn nbn

          • +1

@Bargearse: Let us know the upgrade process.

Will the unit be back to back. As in outdoor unit on the outdoor wall and the indoor unit on the same wall but inside. Or will they put the indoor unit anywhere in the house.

            • +1

@pandadude: Nbn guy installed today. Drilled through the wall from the external box to install another box inside same wall. I set it up with google nest wifi router and point, working really well, solid 100mb download. FTTN was maxing out at 56mb

              • +1

@Bargearse: I might stick with my FTTN which also max 50/10 for a while. I worked out the nbn comes the bedroom. So if l wanted to relocate it to the living room might end up costing a bit.

Also on going from Origin 2 free months to Telstra 2 months for 2 dollars.

  • I checked on nbn website that my suburb is eligible in VIC. Although when I check on AB website, it says my location is not eligible.
I also noticed that More is a participating provider, however I don't see anything on their website regarding the upgrade to FTTP. I'm currently on FTTN.

    • If you live in Bayswater, Bayswater North, Braybrook, Cranborne North, Hampton Park, Lynbrook, Narre Warren, Rowville, Sunshine, Sunshine North you can order FTTP now. If you live somewhere else you need to wait.

  • Has anyone had any luck with telstra doing this yet I rang 3 weeks ago and still no updates

  • It appears Exetel is now providing services to new customers for FTTN to FTTP orders.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/3n1jwznw?p=4

  • Nearly 30 days and Exetel is still working out a process so you can upgrade to FTTP. While ABB already had a process from the get go!

They told me they should be able to finalise a process in the next few days and give me a call back. Not holding my breath.

    • It looks like super loop now has a framework in place for this and is booking technician visits

      • Good to know, funny that they also own Exetel.

  • +1

I followed up super loop since the beginning and looks like the framework was only finalised recently so hopefully Exetel isn’t too far off

  • The additional fibre extensions include parts of the following suburbs and towns3: Annandale, Arana Hills, Arundel, Ashmore, Bargara, Beachmere, Beaudesert, Bellmere, Benowa, Berrinba, Bethania, Bohle Plains, Bokarina, Bowen Hills, Bracken.

My suburb is included. When can I actually upgrade? wait for an email after registering with NBNCO for updates or does that mean now?

    • +1

There are no specific dates apart from sometime in 2022-2023. Wait for an email from nbn and manually check when your premises is ready on here.

      • Thanks! currently on 100/40 Optus, wonder if I have to pay to upgrade..

  • My suburb was listed on the March 2022 announcement and was told that we would be eligible by end of 2023. Been diligently checking every other week and this week I got a message that we I can place my order to upgrade. I've set up my churn to Exetel yesterday evening as they need my FTTN service to be active with them before I can request for free upgrade to FTTP. Pretty impressed with their service that I've got my modem shipped out today.

I used the link below and just check address at the RSP site for eligibility.
    https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/upgrades/fttp-upgrade-w…

    • Hey, my address at Sunshine West Vic also is just eligible, not sure which company I should gonwith this time, I had good experience with AussieBB before.

      • AussieBB is definitely gold standard when it comes to customer service. For me I'm going with Exetel as I get to save $30 a month for 6 months and after that it's $10/mo.

        • Thats nice discount you got there, is that available to everyone? Im thinking going with Superloop however poor customer service from many review sources. I will decide tomorrow, AussieBBs first month free is not too bad either but monthly cost is about $10 more than other providers.

          • @linhlink: Yes it's available to everyone. Exetel offers 100/40 for $79.95 for 1st 6 months and then revert to $98.95 after that. Aussie BB price for 100/40 is $109 and they didn't even offer me 1st month free.

  • Noob question: for us plebs on lower speeds, will this upgrade make any difference? I’m on 50/20 currently, so will need to upgrade to 100/20 to get it. I’ll probably revert back to 50/20 eventually, as it’s fine for me. So does it make any diff having fttp? More reliable etc?

    • +1

Yes, you will need to upgrade to trigger the free upgrade from FTTN to FTTP. In terms of speed and reliability, FTTP potentially provides more reliability compared to the aging FTTN copper that may drop out when flooded. If you need low latency connection, FTTP will definitely make a difference.

I'm putting in my upgrade as I needed higher speed for my work from home arrangements. My current FTTN connection is not good enough.

Do note that you cannot downgrade for 12 months after upgrade otherwise there will be exit fee. Check with your ISP/RSP on the T&C.

      • Thanks mate. I’ve been trying to figure out whether this ties me up to Exetel for another 12 months, or whether I can switch to another isp as long as I stay on a 100/20 plan. I’m on a discounted plan for 6 months and would want to move once that is up.

        • That's a good question. In my opinion, I think I cannot downgrade to slower speed package so I don't see how they can charge me if I leave after 6 months but I'll check the fine prints or contact their sales to be sure.

        • I'm interested in the answer to this as well. The list of participating providers seem limited. See if anybody who knows better come up with good answer.

          • @mredwardli: I just put in my upgrade with Exetel from FTTN to FTTP this morning and I can confirm in my order form that there is no contract on my new plan. To my surprise, an NBN technician was available in my area. I got a call telling me that the technician will be at my place after 2 hours of placing the order. The technician had to spent some time digging up the conduit to run the fibre from the pit to my property. All external work was completed within 1.5 hours. The next part is for the indoor NTD installation which is already scheduled in a fortnight. Very happy with Exetel and NBN on the speedy processing of my upgrade.

        • There's nothing in their terms and conditions that mentions anything about these fees for leaving.

          • @rooboy316: I haven't gotten the answer for the fees yet but this was reported back in 2021 about NBN potentiallg charging RSP if user downgrade within 12 months of upgrade to FTTP.

            https://www.itnews.com.au/news/nbn-co-to-charge-free-fibre-r…

            • @jimkhoo: Thanks for the update. I posted about in on Whirpool and the Exetel rep said as much… ie there’s nothing in the terms and conditions about it. Unfortunately for me, I’m currently fttc so I have to upgrade to the much more exp 250/25 to qualify.

FTTC to FTTP is ready to go in parts of VIC, NSW and SA with more to come.

This is the first in a series of tranches that will extend eligibility to approximately 115,000 additional premises per month in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia, to make almost 1 million premises currently served by FTTC able to access nbn™ Home Ultrafast by the end of this year. By the end of next year, approximately 1.5 million customers currently able to access the nbn network via FTTC will be able to upgrade to FTTP and enjoy access to the highest speeds available on the network.

I have fttc, booked to come on 24th June. NBN guy came yesterday to scope the premises. Honestly can't wait :)

    • Hey mate can I ask which provider? I'd tried to have it done thru Optus but they seem to have no idea.

      • I did it with Exetel, churned from AussBB. Search flip to fibre, superloop has it as well as AusBB.

        • Thanks! I checked my suburb is on the list above. but checked my address on Exetel flip to fibre it says

"Your address is currently connected via nbn™ FTTC.
Unfortunately NBN Co have not yet scheduled a date when your address will be
          Fibre-to-the-home upgrade ready."

did you get it all done online or have to call? maybe i call them tmrw otherwise just have to keep waiting i suppose.

          • @mredwardli: Just did everything online, no phone calls from me. Try calling see what they say

@shernjr: Called them, took forever to pick up and got thrown around like a ball. Still they can't explain why my suburb on list but upgrade not yet possible. Just have to wait I suppose. Thanks for the help and congratulations on FTTP!

  • I think it's great that they're doing some FTTC locations but it woulda been nice to get some more FTTN done first, as someone who can barely get 51 on FTTN after moving interstate from FTTC surely the node is the weakest link

  • Tried to find out why 2 houses down can upgrade from fttc to fftp and I could not.

NBN Responded. "Not all premises within the suburbs listed are eligible for the upgrade at this time."

    I just lost all hope.
    my street looks like.

My suburb Sydenham 3037 was not on the list when I checked couple of months back but today I got an email from NBN that my address is eligible. Entered my address in Superloop site and they say I can upgrade from 12 June.

Not sure what to do, I have sort of happy with Superloop 100/40 plan.

Does the nbn installer go up the roof and follow the phone (fttc) cable, the phone cable ends in my living room where I have my modem/router or can I ask them to put the fiber box in a different room?

    • It's a matter of negotiation so there's some risk they put it in a place you don't like.

For fttp there's a utility box outside and a connection box and power supply unit inside which are both wall mounted.

      • Actually it's one box outside and one inside

      • That is what I am worried about, I am pretty happy with FTTC dont want to risk it havinf FTTP in a different room in the house where I dont want it.

Will need to do some research or will ask Superloop.

  • My suburb is taylors hill, vic, i applied with superloop already but from the look of it, its going to take forever unless im going with ABB

    • Are you on fttn or fttc
