Better off going to the referral wiki and helping out fellow internet friends for the same number of points.

Please do favours when you can.

Can a moderator amend the OP to include the referral links suggestion?

      • what kind of referral bonus if I use the link?
Do you know how long until I could get my own referral link? Is it when the credit card opened or activated then I can then use my own referral link?

I'm thinking of opening for me and my wife.

        • Yes, you should be able to refer as soon as your card is activate.

        • +1

Once you activate your card, you can generate your link. If your wife uses your link, you'll get bonus points (the number will depend on which card you have - the more expensive the card you have, the higher the bonus. Should be 10,000-20,000 points). I'm quite certain you can't get points by applying for another card your own referral link.

    • Definitely this!
P.S to anyone, the "Velocity Platinum Credit Card" is the other 0$ fee card which gets Amex rewards, costs you nothing thgroughout the year etc.
I "made" about $80 a few months ago just for shopping around a little, very happy with that card.

      • +1

how do you get the velocity platinum card for $0 fee?
        it's showing me $349/year fee?

        • Man don't tell me I got it wrong or put my name in the wrong column!
          Let me check hang on.

        • Sorry, either wiki columns renamed or I messed up
The correct card is "Velocity Escape Credit Card"
OzB members really should use the referral system to be honest, you both get 7,000 points! and 9,000 points = about $50 voucher at coles, which is damn near as good as cash ♥

I fixed it up, also member "tlam" has messed his up. I'll message him.

      • This is WRONG, duh, I had mine in the wrong column, (or someone edited the columns?)
"Velocity Escape Credit Card" <- that's the other 0$ fee card.

    • Also, I'm pretty sure (not 100%) anyone with a "Qantas" Amex can refer anyone getting another "Qantas" Amex - i.e. you don't have to sign up for the exact same card, it could be a Qantas Discover, Ultimate, or Premium.

      • Correct. I just generated links for all 3 cards from my Premium one.

    • This one doesn't have an annual fee…

      • It's never had an annual fee though - it's just that this offer is exactly the same offer through the referral system.

        • Okay cool, thanks.

  • +1

I didn't even know about the referrals wiki!! thanks prisonerzero

  • Isn't the ANZ Black CC better?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/230094

    • not everyone can re-apply the ANZ black and the $2500 minimum spend is also significantly higher than $300 min spend for this card.
but in an ideal world, yes ANZ black definitely is a better deal

      • The basic ANZ QFF card and Plat QFF cards are also better in terms of free points if you can't make Black.

    • +4

why not get both ANZ CC and this one

  • To clarify the quantas points earned are different to the velocity points, I'm earning on my other card, or no?
    https://shop.velocityfrequentflyer.com/Award?KeyWords=&PointsOptions=PointsRange&MinimumPoints=0&MaximumPoints=10000&cm_re=Home--AUSB2--Fantastic%20Rewards
    (Not a referral link!)

I was thinking about getting this card, because 0$ fee, but potential to exploit more of the Amex rewards promotions (nearly 65$ "free" Myki money was pretty nice, 2 months back)

    • +2

Qantas points are usable only on Qantas' loyalty program where as Velocity is for Virgin Australia's loyalty program.

      • Thanks dude, I take it they only have flights?
The velocity rewards do actually have some regular stuff like those gift cards and what have you, do you know the URL for the Quantas spending page?

        • +1

Qantas do have "regular stuff" like gift cards too, just like Velocity

      • +1

Almost correct.. well pretty much correct.
But Qantas you could technically also use on Emirates, Fiji Airways, Cathay, Malaysia Airlines, BA, Finnair.. oneWorld basically.
Velocity you can use on Singapore Airlines (you can even convert to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Miles), Etihad, Air NZ and a bunch of others too.

        • I almost never fly, I kept the points for redeeming for stuff of cash value, plus these Amex cards are amazing once or twice a year with some crazy deals. One dude on this site has 9 of them. If you've got the money and want to buy stuff cheap, can be great to pay for an expensive item, with 9 cards, each one saving 10,20% off of a hundred dollars or something (for example)

Surprisingly good cards if you got a keen eye on ozbargain and an Amex alert configured

        • @hamwhisperer: If you're after cash value stuff, you're better off selling the points on here.

People will readily pay up to 1c per point in cash, as opposed to 0.6/0.65c per point with gift voucher redemptions.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Oh…………. how do I send them the points? I got about 8700 in my account I think.

        • @hamwhisperer: Maybe accumulate some more before selling, but you can do 'family' transfers… in this day and age, sharing a surname is no requirement (brother in law etc).
If you can find somebody in your location willing to buy, meet up with a laptop, they can show you the cash, you can transfer the points.

        • @hamwhisperer: Haha don't worry I know all about it ;)
I've got 15 AMEX cards available to me to use. It's a handful to manage though.

But yes, what ex-prime minster's eyebrows said.
Sell your points for 1c/pt. Better value than GCs.

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:
9 of them? How does he get around the "This offer excludes existing Card Members or previous Card Members who have held any American Express Card in the last 12 months" clause?

Does Amex not check that well?

I have the Velocity version of this card, and it would be good to have the QANTAS version and score the points too!

        • +1

@Orqq: I didn't realise that, maybe we should ask @illumination if he has the Quantas and the regular Velocity? I know some people are using ANZ / CBA "Amex" cards to get around it

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:

Firstly, bank issued Amex cards are never counted as Amex cards for the purposes of being a 'card member.'

Secondly, Amex just seem to either have very poor policing of the rule for existing card members, or just don't care about doling out the points to existing members. But some people have reported receiving phone calls stating they are not eligible, so it's not a 100% thing. Having said that, the phone call should give you the opportunity to decline the card offer before spending, meaning you won't cop the annual fee, though you will take the credit file hit.

There are risks involved, but the rewards are well worth it.

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: To be fair I won't be considering the card in this bargain anyhow, I specifically only use feeless cards (I have like 4 or 5 now)

  • +5

Note: since its directly with AMEX this card also works with apple pay.

  • What if you already have an AMEX issued card ? can you still get the 12000 points?

"The 15,000 Qantas Points offer is only available to new Qantas American Express Card members who apply via the online application form by 15 March 2016, are approved and make the required eligible Card spend(s). Card members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product offered by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 12 month period are ineligible for this offer. Points are awarded as follows: "

    • I got called earlier today after applying, they told me I wont get the bonus point because I have david jones amex

      • some people at http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/american… forum had success in the past in getting bonus points even though they already have an AMEX, while others didn't

up to you if you want to try it or not

        • Yeah, I got the bonus when I applied for david jones platinum edge, but for this qantas somehow I received a call said that you cant get it because you are existing customer of amex.

Probably thats her tactic for people who only loves point like me

  • Which is the good card to get ? I just want the point, not intend to use the card … if I can avoid it.

    • +4

Assuming you are willing to pay to increase your points balance, the best deals would be:

      • ANZ Qantas Black. 75k points for 2.5k spend and annual fee waived first year. They’ll also send you two Qantas lounge passes if you ask for them. Note minimum income $75k and more difficult to get than Amex.
      • Amex Velocity Platinum. 80k points for $1k spend with $349 fee, plus free return domestic flight and two Virgin lounge passes. Highly recommended.
      • Amex Qantas Premium. 80k points for $3k spend with $249 fee. Additional 2.5k points and two Qantas lounge passes available if spend is made with Qantas.

To get the Amex cards, use the below referral link (the Velocity card you have to use the link; the Qantas card is just a nice gesture to give a fellow Ozbargainer bonus points at no cost to you).

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

      • I have some QFF. Can I convert my QFF to Velocity or vice versa ?

        • Nope…but you can probably find somebody here to swap them.

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: Do people around here do that? Once my account gets credited from the recent ANZ black qantas card I will have around 100,000 qantas points. Would be interested in swapping them to virgin points if someone was keen? I'm sure I'm related to someone on here. ;)

        • @dwhes: Just post in classifieds. See who bites.

      • I noticed that the Amex Velocity Platinum has 50k points now :(

        • Nope…that's the Amex link you must be looking at. You need to click on a referral link (see the link in my post above), then select the link of an Ozbargain username (the person will get 20,000 points), and you will get 80k points.

        • +1

          @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

Well, you just earned yourself 20k of bonus points.

        • @j4ck: Kind of you. :) :) :)

      • +1

thank you very much!! I have been waiting for the 100k to comeback but this offer will do just fine.

        ty ty ty

      • Own the referral page:

“If your friend holds or has previously held any other Card product offered by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 12 month period you and your friend are ineligible for this offer.”

I recently got approved for the ANZ AMEX card. Does it mean that wont applies to me?

      • Why would ANZ give you free Qantas lounge pass?

        • I have no idea

        • Lounge access is a common feature of prestige cards. Most cards in the $400+ annual fee range offer either priority pass or Qantas lounge passes. I guess they figure it makes you think you're getting value (unless you have some big ticket items to spend on, or the card includes a free flight, you probably aren't).

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Diners club at $135 p.a. is a cheap way to get access to most Priority Pass lounges too.

  • Can I stack this on top of the Premium Qantas Amex with this card?

  • +2

Am I correct in thinking that this is a chance to get an AMEX card for free with no annual fee or usage charges? So then I can take up the Ozbargain deals which only are available to AMEX card holders?

  • Would this work with Apple Pay?

  • Can you merge this one with your ANZ QFF points you've earned?

    • +1

You don't have a choice. It'll get merged even if you don't want it to lol

  • I signed up for this card on Monday but haven't received it in the mail yet. Can I take advantage of this offer?

    • By default probably not, but might be worth a call to ask

  • Awesome! Have been waiting for a promotion re: this card for a while ^^

  • +1

Does anyone know the best Qantas required spend to get the extra 2500 points? like cheapest thing to use it on?

    • +1
      1. Selected Qantas products and services are Qantas passenger flights with a QF flight number purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. with Qantas direct or some travel agents and Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays, and Qantas branded non-airfare products. Subject to the Qantas American Express Card Points Terms and Conditions.
    • So I guess the cheapest Qantas ticket you could find? Maybe something like a Hobart to Melbourne, or Sydney to Canberra? I doubt you could get a flight for like $20 though, so it's probably not worth it just for the points.

      • It's a tricky one. If you can do a points topup ($20 for 500 points), you should get it.

The way to get around it - and this is complicated - is to buy a fully refundable business class fare (over $600 minimum). If you refund it to your Amex card, you may lose the 2,500 points, but you will get to keep the lounge passes (just don't cancel till you receive them).

        • what about buying stuff from qantas shop - will that count as Selected Qantas products and services?

          http://www.qantasshop.com.au/shopby-2-Under_$20#

        • @jabroni: You can give it a go, no idea. Technically doesn't count.

  • I went with no fee in 1St year, 10000 points + a free return flight (used in 1St week) + complimentary travel insurance.

    www.partnersamericanexpress.com.au/cpa/cpaplatedgecreditcard…

    • Same here.
You know how there's an option to pay 8000 points instead of the annual fee, do you do that before the annual fee is due or after you're charged for it? Thinking of doing that for next year, redeem my flight then cancel..

    • Hmm.. haven't done much calculation.. but can u let me in on why did u choose the CPA one instead of this?
This 1 has no annual fee but CPA one need 149 pa?

      • 3 points / $ on grocery shopping, 2 points / $ fuel, free return flight each year.

        • Well, in a roundabout way, a $149 flight in the second year. I'll give it a crack for 11 months and see how it goes. Practicalities like paying bills via Bpay etc don't work with AMEX, and many retailers have an AMEX surcharge. So it's not an all in one credit card solution. If I call and cancel in 11 months then it hasn't cost me anything and if I use it enough they will likely waive the second year annual fee upon making that call. Will need a replacement for my Citi Signature soon as that will no longer accrue points for paying bills.

        • @tunzafun001:
tf, can you tell me why you think it's only a flight in the second year? I thought you would get one in the first year before paying the second year's annual fee, am I missing something?

Also, what changed so the citi signature no longer accrues points for "bills"?

          Thanks

        • @mckennal:

I meant there is no fee on the first year (so free flight). The second year attracts a $149 fee (so I'm effectively saying the flight is $149). So you do get 2 flights in 2 years if you pay the $149.

As for Citi, they just sent an email stating the changes to the Signature product effective March 16.

        • @tunzafun001: I didn't bother reading them, as I haven't used my Signature for a while…did it in fact say no more points for utilities?

        • @tunzafun001:
          Got it, thanks.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

"The changes will take effect from 18 March 2016 unless otherwise indicated and will affect you in the following ways:

          1. We are introducing a cap on the maximum number of reward Points you can earn on domestic spend and changing the rate at which you earn reward Points for international spend.

          2. BPAY transactions will no longer be eligible to earn reward Points.

          3. The rate at which you can transfer Citi reward Points for Velocity Points or Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Miles will change, as will the minimum transfer amount.

          4. From 18 January 2016, you will be charged an International Transaction Fee on transactions made with an overseas merchant in AUD. We currently charge this fee only on transactions made with overseas merchants in their local currency.

          5. We will also be increasing this International Transaction Fee from 3.3% to 3.4% for Visa cardholders.

          6. We have changed the way we can vary your Rewards Terms and Conditions moving forward. "

  • Pity I have already got platinum edge from Amex :(

    • My personal experience is that they'll often just give you the points anyway. YMMV.

      • +2

        Thanks mr PM.

  • Thanks OP. I've been looking for a freebie Amex since I cancelled my ANZ black once the free 12months ran out. This is perfect.

  • Used Austinz's referral link!

  • +2

Just a reminder that this Amex deal expires in 6 days.

    • First year fee waived
    • Claim a free return domestic flight straight away
    • All the other Amex extras (eg. purchase and refund protection, travel insurance, reward points).

I plug this deal quite often but for me this has been the best bargain on OzB. Got most of the family on board who have all booked their flights already - not a cent paid - each one saved around $500 being from Perth. I was originally going to cancel the card after a year but after CS reminded me that my next complimentary flight starts again in June, I think I'll keep it.

My savings/freebies within the last 7 months of casual use:
    * $100 from points by using it for grocery purchases
    * $50 back from Harvey Norman purchase promo
    * $100 back from small shop promo
    * Free Perth - Sydney ret flight (saved ~$500)
    * Extra year warranty applied to washing machine purchase

    • +1

      Couldn't agree more with you.
      Really really good card.

      • Did you end up getting one?

        • Yep I got it through the exact same promo.
I also found out that the Priceline 10pts/$ thing is actually permanent through this promo which is actually really bloody good.

And yes - even with annual fee this card is well worth it.

    • Hi OldBugger, but your 'next complimentary flight' requires an annual fee of $195 is that correct?

      • Correct. Although I'll try my luck at getting that waived like some others have done ☺
